Graphic: violence around Pakistan
Graphic: the assassination of Benazir Bhutto
The Pakistan Government tonight claimed that Benazir Bhutto did not die from bullet wounds, as previously thought, but from hitting the sunroof of her campaign vehicle.
The dramatic statement came as the murdered political leader's funeral drew to a close and the violence that has convulsed the country since her death intensified.
The interior ministry said at a press conference that video of Ms Bhutto's last moments and an examination by doctors had shown that Ms Bhutto died apparently accidentally, as a suicide bomb blast went off at her political rally in Rawalpindi last night, killing around 20 people. No full post mortem examination had been carried out at the request of Ms Bhutto's husband, it was reported.
Brigadier Javed Cheema, a ministry spokesman, said Ms Bhutto had died from a head wound after smashing against the sunroof’s lever as she tried to shelter inside her car. "There is no evidence of any foreign element in her body," Brigadier Cheema said. "No bullet hit her, nor any splinters hit her. Unfortunately, it was to be that way.
"I wish she had not come out of the roof top of her vehicle."
But Ms Bhutto's lawyer and a senior official in the PPP, Farooq Naik, rejected the Government's claim as "baseless".
"It is a pack of lies," he said.
"Two bullets hit her, one in the abdomen and one in the head.
"It was a serious security lapse."
At the press conference, Brigadier Cheema insisted the Government had done everything in its power to protect Ms Bhutto. He said everybody at the rally in Rawalpindi had been searched, Ms Bhutto's rostrum had been bulletproof, and "all possible security arrangements were made within the resources of the Government of Pakistan".

First , their is evidence that Bhutto has had corruption issues. Please don't deny that because of your emotions for her. That does not mean she is bad. You have to be corrupt to be in that kind of power position. Her level of corruption is low considered to others. Second I have seen a handful of interviews with her were she states that she does not want bodyguards all around her keeping her from her supporters. Sorry but no level of security will keep you safe with that idea. She was wanted by alot of groups. Also in the video the shooter looks like he was on the left side of the vehicle and the wound on her head is on the right side. Could be why first they said a gun shot because of the gun shots then the hospital said shrapnel and now a bummped head. You would not now the source of an injury until the head is operated on and you find what is inside. I wish her aide would stop the contradictions because this is no time to play politics. It is very sad that Ms. Bhutto is dead.
paul, miltown, US
3 shots heard on the video tape. Two shots fired from a handgun, and a third shot, it appears from another gun. A bomb, and the Pakistan govt. want us to believe she died from a bang on the head? Now that does sound like a preposterous attempt at an 'explanation' for the headwound in an assassination cover-up. She was a real heroine. God rest her soul.

Rather convenient cause of death - hitting her own head so doing herself in.

Not a great leader I'm afraid. Though America and the UK might want you to think so she has never done anything to justify that claim. Neither, despite the claims being made, would she have been the answer to Pakistans problems - she even admitted that she had no answer at all to the extremism (of all hues) in the country. The answer can only come from within the people's hearts and minds.
Dominic, Teddington,
It would have been interesting to see if she could have done anything to help Pakistan (with so many crazies there blowing stuff up), but it wasn't surprising this happened. Musharref himself would be dead by now if he paraded in an open car, and he has the whole army to protect him.

What's the difference, we either live in a dictatorship or an elected dictatorship. All run by a selected few. Either by election and decite or by visible force.

The Pakistani government is making it own cover-up story. Sources of those in her car said she had two bullet wounds, one in the neck and one in the chest, before the bomb went off...and that she slumped to the floor of the vehicle.... A bump to the head against the handle of the roof window is a FAR stretch to cause that much physical impact. Makes one wonder how much the Pakistan government is in bed with Al Quaida, since they have not kept their promises to the west and to Ms Bhutto. They will be held accountable some day.
Henry, Logan, USA
Stephen Colbert should be the head of the Pakistani government.... As well as every other government.
Mohamad, Toledo, Ohio, United States
no evidance she was corrupt? Thats quote of the day. The current president is a great man if the poor people of pakistan all voted they would al vote for the current president. I live in england and enjoy the best democracy in the world but you cannot expect that the same values and ideoligy is going to work in the other part of the world. Having visited pakistan on numerous occasions during the past 15 years i can honeslty say more Infrastructure and less corrupation has only been during Musharaff has been in power and like it or not normal working class people dont want elections with these corrupt leaders.

We absolutely have to "educate our illiterate masses, and provide them with some sort of economic independence". Then, and only then, will there be any stability in a functioning democracy. The West seems intent on thrusting democracy upon these very illiterate masses, who are told to vote for whoever they are told to, by their "landlord" - in the truest sense of the word.
I've said it before, democracy is desired by all, desirable for none.
I'm still quite surprised to read comments left by educated people suggesting under Bhutto's rule, there was no corruption. Musharraf sahib may have dropped all allegations against her, but even the Swiss authorities have not. Are you telling me, she amassed a $1.5 Billion dollar fortune via legitimate methods? She was no Heseltine - and his publishing house only turned over £15 million. As sure as she was a mother, she was corrupt. Only after Musharraf sahib has taken control of the country, has Pakistan been able to stand on it's own feet.
Hassan Azam, Banbury , Oxfordshire, England
I know nothing about the corruption thing around her I only know the rumors about it. She might have been a complex person but then anyone who can rise as high as her despite the dynasty and her education backing her up would be a complex person. She was one great woman perhaps one of the greatest woman force of the past 20 years thats my opinion. It's a sad day for freedom. I pray Aung Sang Su Ky will be preserved from such lunatics as fanatics and perhaps rise as the phoenix, that would be one great happening that would place the temple back where it's supposed to be at.

"Whether they survive the slings and arrows of their competitors is of no consequence to the vast majority who cannot be bothered to vote. "
Evan, please do explain what you mean by this... or someone explain please. I'm a bit of a dullard and need help understanding, please don't criticise me..thank you!
Tim, USA,
If Pakistan is to survive, we have to get rid of all the remnants of the British Raj and by that I mean the feudal lords who have their own private armies. They are by no means champions of democracy. The West can say whatever it wants to its own gullible people but most of the people of Pakistan know that in order to become a functioning democracy, we have to educate our illiterate masses, and provide them with some sort of economic independence.
Gulmina, Montreal, Canada
She was marred by both political and corruption controversy, the latter being more truthful.
Kalyan Deb, New Delhi, India
Corruption is in the eye of the beholder, are our 'political pygmies' any better that those in any other God forsaken country? I don't think so.
Politics as we know it is not fit for purpose, there is no social benefit for the populace, only fame and fortune for those elected by default. Whether they survive the slings and arrows of their competitors is of no consequence to the vast majority who cannot be bothered to vote.
It's quite sad really.
Evan Owen, Harlech, Wales
I find the initial comments vacuous, ignorant, and rather inhuman - I applaud the response of F of G/shire and Austin of LA, they are 'spot on'.
There is no evidence of serious corruption, and if there was some, it is part of the landscape in the sub-continent -a kind of realpolitik.
Phil of M/side - hard- nosed and at a distance, in your armchair. By the way, on a purely human level, have you ever lost a mother at a young age ?? I suppose you'd say 'tough'.
David, Poole, UK
How would the citizens of this Island feel if the same befell Gordon Brown our Prime Minister which sealed the fate of Benazir Bhutto?
Answers please.
Robert Parker, Royal Leamington Spa., English
She gave hope. But it was hollow. The only thing that wasn't, was her bank balance. During her time in power, she contributed nothing to the development of Pakistan, apart from an asset stripping exercise, and during her time in exile, simple, hollow, useless rhetoric. She defined corruption.
Bhutto is dead and buried. But Pakistan's underlying institutions will ensure Pakistan is not. This can be Pakistan's rebirth.
Hassan Azam, Banbury , Oxfordshire, England
She left a husband and 3 children, its very sad.
Suicide bombers and their leaders are pathetic wimps who are too stupid to discuss rationally and come to a consensus of opinion. Brains will outdo brawn at the end of the day, so suicide bombers are fighting a losing battle.
They may think they can wipe out the spirit of democracy by killing one or even a thousand people, they are wrong, the spirit of democracy will go on regardless!
They are too ignorant to understand that however and will no doubt go on trying to kill people to remove something that will never die, no matter what they do.
Clare, St Ives, UK
The area is so full of corruption that it must be impossible for any leader to negotiate only with honest people. Leaders will have to work within corruption somehow. It is a sad reality. It is not enough to call leaders corrupt. You must find a way to make it work. Democracy leads to freedom and freedom is the ONLY antidote to Terrorism. ---- I believe that Musharraf's approach is to control Terrorism. He succeeds but the country cannot move forward. Others would try to move forward but lack of control would lead to more bombings. It is a horribly difficult problem.

Bhutto 'died after hitting head on car roof'
I am simply amazed that your group prinited this story.

There is plenty of evidence of corruption against Benazir. The Swiss government had outstanding warrants for her arrest for reasons relating to money laundering. One of her properties in the UK (actually in her husbands name) was liquidated with the proceeds being returned to the government of Pakistan. She and her husband amassed about $1.5 billion during her second term as prime minister. This occurred when she appointed her husband to be in charge of all investments entering and leaving the country. High members in her second government are also highly suspected in causing the death of her brother Murtaza. Anyone who says that there is no evidence of corruption against her or her family is wrong. She was a most dishonest woman who was completely incapable of leadership and should not have been allowed anywhere near government. I did not wish death on her, regardless of my lack of admiration for Benazir her death is very tragic and will remain a black mark on Pakistan's history.
Hamzah, London, UK
For any "authority" to claim "she died accidently" is the most pompous and callous remark imaginable. She did not die accidently, it was most intended.

And Pakistan is an aspiring first world country? Yeah, right!
Ed Dirben, Jackson, Tennessee
Corruption has nothing to do with it. She may have been, but the hope she gave to millions in helping create a progressive, democratic nation is what people supported her for. Unfortunately, most of the greats are killed before they really have a chance to provide much needed aid to this world.
Austin, Los Angeles, California
Sorry Phil, there never was any evidence of corruption just gossip mongering. No different to the Madeleine Mccann case mere supposition by evil people with nothing better to do.
Pakistan will be a poorer place for the loss of a great leader. The fact that she was a woman in a male dominated country was also another factor against her. The present government is bad for the world not just Pakistan. What way forward now?
F, Gloucestershire,
She may have been portrayed as corrupt but there was no conclusive evidence to support this.
She was a great leader and will be sadly missed.
Phil, If you think she was corrupt, what about the current president of pakistan?
Mohammed, London, UK
I agree with Phill. Rather then looking at her past, the concerned parties were looking at their own interests and gains. She did nothing but destroyed her country. The fanatic elements prospered at the time when she was in government. As you sow, so shall you reap. Although a gruesome act but its true for every human being.
Shiraz, Karlskrona,
Why such fanatical support for such a corrupt politician?
I dont get it
