Tibet activists around the world urged China last night to show restraint, saying they feared a repeat of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
They fell short of calling for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics but urged public figures to reconsider their attendance and threatened a boycott if China used excessive force.
“Restraint, restraint, restraint,” said Anne Holmes, acting director of the London-based Free Tibet Campaign, which claims 10,000 full members and another 10,000 supporters.
She said their message to Beijing was: “The world is watching. You will be condemned if blood is shed.”
She said that her group had written to Gordon Brown yesterday to ask him to back calls from the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, for UN observers to be sent to Lhasa, the Tibetan capital. It also asked the Prime Minister to send a representative from the British Embassy in Beijing to ensure that Chinese authorities did not use excessive force in the absence of foreign reporters and tourists.
“There’s every possibility of something as bloody as Tiananmen Square in Tibet tomorrow,” she said. “The Chinese authorities are doing everything in their power to get all foreigners out. We have deep concerns that the reaction is going to be bloody.”
Similar fears were voiced by activists across Europe, Asia and the United States, highlighting the global following that the Dalai Lama has attracted to his cause since fleeing his homeland in 1959.
Among his most vocal supporters are celebrities who have embraced Tibetan Buddhism, including the Hollywood actors Harrison Ford, Uma Thurman and Richard Gere. “I have not been pro-boycott but I think if this is not handled correctly, yes we should boycott, everyone should boycott,” said Gere, who has followed Tibetan Buddhism for 25 years.
“As educated, as sensitive as the Chinese are, why they’ve misread the Tibetan situation from the very beginning is beyond me. It’s just so foolish and short-sighted. Everything that they want is destroyed in moments like this.”
Other prominent figures believed to support the Dalai Lama include the Prince of Wales and Stephen Spielberg. .
Gere said that his comments reflected his personal views rather than that of the New York-based International Campaign for Tibet, of which he is chairman. The ICT does not support an Olympic boycott but is urging the international community to press the Chinese Government to show restraint.
Meanwhile, the International Tibet Support Network has written to the International Olympic Committee demanding that it remove Tibet from the Beijing Olympic Torch Relay route.

How much do you know about China? Stop your foolish sayings! Chairman Mao said no investigation is no right to comment on it. As a Chinese, I firmly support Beijing Olympics and our country. So do 1.3 billion Chinese!
I Love China, Guilin,
Did the rioters really kill innocent people or just burn some buildings? I have a feeling that the anti rioter crowd here is being fooled by the Chinese propaganda machine. Do some searches about the restrictions they are putting on journalists and the media. If the rioters are so bad would the Chinese government be censoring so much??
Even if the innocent people were killed by the rioters I say it is a case of evil begetting evil. Brutal Chinese repression = death of innocents in riots. I am not trying to absolve the killers of blame, just spreading it to where it is also deserved.
Max, Calgary, Canada
Anyone who has been around Buddhist monks or know their principles would fathom how badly they must have been repressed to have gone onto violent protests. Lets not forget who the victims have been for the past 6 decades - You can't dismiss sixty years of repression and brand the Tibetians as villains for standing up for their own rights. I don't approve of violence at all. But for a meaningful dialogue, it takes two parties.
Pradeep, Stanford, USA
First: Regarding a post above about the conflict betwixt the U.S. and the Indians, dismiss it. That kind of thinking is the modern form of self-flagellation as practiced in Europe during the fourteenth-century. That past cannot be changed, the future is speculative, only the present can be directly addressed. The act of excusing sins that are happening now because of perceived sins of the past is, in itself, sinfull.
Second: To stand with the Tibetans, people worldwide should immediately announce that they will boycott the Olympics if repression by the Communist Chinese is not stopped immediately. The communists expect to showcase China (and communism) with the Olympics and gain much as a result; only war (which I do not recommend) would be a greater disaster for the Chinese communists.
Third: We should demand that the IOC relocate the Olympics to another country; itâs not too late. The previously used facilities in Athens and Sydney are there, and could be used now. This could have an even greater impact than a simple boycott.

History is history, it's not fair, true, but there's no much you can do about it, now so many Han and Hui people live in Tibet, let Tibet free?? That would be a disaster too, we've already seen how Tibetans treat these non-Tibetan people in these riots, They should protest Chinese government not killing innocent ordinal Han or Hui people.
Terry, Markham, Canada
Gasoline bombs are not restraint. This is not a peaceful protest in Tibet. The Chinese government has the right to use force if necessary to protect innocent bystanders. The protesters in Tibet lost my support when I heard of the methods they were employing.
Richard Welsh, Winona, USA/MN
And the 'rioters' have the right to fight back if their country is being annexed.
Putrayasa, Denpasar, Indonesia
I find that the Tibetan People have shown remarkable restraint so far. They've shown restraint and tolerance since the moment the Chinese Army invaded their homeland. They have had their homes taken from them, their way of life utterly decimated, and their cultural identity almost wiped from history.
We need to talk to our governments, get them to understand what is going on with the situation in Tibet. China needs to be shown that this is not acceptable. Have them put pressure on China to stop their madness before it does become another Tiananmen Square incident.
All these people wanted was to be left in peace. To go on with their lives as it has done for centuries. They've done nothing to warrant the savage and mindless brutality that has been running rampant since the 1950's
Diane Taylor, Houston, Texas, USA
re david, you mean you have the right to fight if you had been invaded, occupied, disrespected, abused, had a gestapo-like apparatus put over you, had your culture smashed in so-called cultural revolutions, purges and crackdowns, suffered killings and torture, etc?
matt , Sydney, Australia
Would you show restraint is they invaded your house rape your females, kill all your males, kick your sons out of their religious school, destroy your way of life. your traditional and said that your land belong to the Han's people. Pls don't show your ignorances about world's problem here. Why you condem Iraq when they invaded Kuwait but nobody dare to said anything when Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950's. Would American not fight back the English in the American Revolution War (show restraint)? go back to school pls.
DumethangTau, Houston, US
Yes, show your restraint when Han Chinese are burnt alive by Tibetan mobs. No matter how righteous you are you simply cannot justify killing innocent people. Both CCP and Tibetan movement supporters need to show restraint.
Angus Young, San Francisco, USA
"....maybe the rioters should show restraint themselves. we have the right to fight back if we are struck...."
Maybe the Chinese government should stop brutally oppressing their people. Basic human rights aren't that much to ask for. The Chinese government deserves no sympathy and no support. The day they fall will be a day of celebration.
These "rioters" are the direct result of an utter lack of basic freedoms throughout the Chinese empire.
Ken, Niagara Falls, New York, United States
The world does not care about Tibet because there is no MONEY to be made.
Boycott chinese products...Don't buy anything that made in CHINA.
Communist ideal is a lost cause and eventually will die out.
Michael, Diamond Bar, California
The world must courageously expose the Chinese grab of Tibet for what it is â the egotistic economic colonization of Tibet, & the geopolitical bullying of the world by a future superpower. The powerful Chinese communists have shown themselves repeatedly to be more ruthless than European colonizers, even against their own people, let alone Vietnam, Taiwan, or Tibet.
When the European superpowers did the same to Hong Kong or South Africa, the world did not relent in its moral outrage, shaming the colonizers into finally relinquishing their power. Of course China will play the âvictimâ of encirclement, but it will not receive world sympathy while it brutally crushes Tibet.
Remy P, Portland, USA
David, if you study modern history for a while, you will come across Chicago, 1968. The chant was "The Whole World's Watching". And it was. It brought about the end of the American policy on Vietnam. World attention is more focussed now than it ever was in 68. This will become THE story of the summer games if China reacts wrongly in the eyes of the watching world. Rights and wrongs of history or individuals will not come into it.
George Edwards, Doncaster, England
