The hardline leader of Tibet has branded the Dalai Lama a “monster” as it emerged that Tibetan students in Beijing have been ordered to effectively renounce any allegiance to their god-king.
Zhang Qingli, the Communist Party Secretary in Tibet, said that the struggle to crush the unrest in the deeply Buddhist Himalayan region involved nothing less than the stability of the entire country.
That battle by China to reassert control over its restive Tibetan population has now drawn in students attending schools and universities in Beijing.
They are required to provide four answers, Tibetan sources told The Times. First, they must write a reply to the question “What position does the Dalai Lama occupy in your heart?” Second, they must provide the address and place of work of their parents. Third, they must give details of their own identity card. Finally, they must guarantee not to take part in any political activities.
Many of Tibet’s most promising students are sent to Chinese schools and universities outside the Himalayan region by parents eager to ensure they receive an education in Mandarin Chinese – the official language of China and an important tool to a good career.
One parent said: “How can they ask children of 17 or 18 to write such a political document. These children can barely even speak Tibetan. Does the government have so little trust in Tibetans that it even requires children to make such an allegiance?”
The demand that students effectively denounce the Dalai Lama, declared only on Tuesday by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao as an enemy of China, highlights the nervousness among Communist Party authorities at the continued influence the 14th reincarnation of the Ocean of Wisdom still wields among Tibetans.
Mr Zhang, addressing a meeting in Lhasa, issued a blistering tirade against the 72-year-old monk, who has lived in exile in India since he fled Lhasa in a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.
“We are in the midst of a fierce struggle involving blood and fire, a life and death struggle with the Dalai clique."
The hardline party boss, launching a campaign to restore Chinese authority in Lhasa after a deadly riot last Friday in which Tibetan mobs stabbed, hacked and burnt to death several ethnic Han Chinese, is presiding over house-to-house searches for those involved.
He said: “As long as we... remain of one heart, turn the masses into a walled city and work together to attack the enemy, then we can safeguard social stability and achieve a full victory in this intense battle against separatism."
The leader who, since taking up his post two years ago, has imposed a series of new restrictions banning all government servants from attending religious ceremonies, said the Dalai Lama clique was bent on separating the Tibetan region from Chinese rule and was seeking to use the period before the Beijing Olympic Games in August to foment unrest.
"The Dalai Lama is a wolf wrapped in a habit, a monster with human face and animal's heart."

The only thing I can't really understand is how PRC hopes to improve relationships with Tibet, if they violently brought in their new Communist laws under the slogan of " Tibet and China are separated brothers and sisters, who at last will unite in their struggle against imperialistic world states
Inga, Riga, Latvia
This is stupid, because only weak and cowardly people would so easily obey and forget their culture and their tradition and so easily switch to a new one.
There are two wonderful proverbs in Russian, which fully describe why the occupation of Tibet lead to such consequences.
Inga, Riga, Latvia
First- "you got what you fought for"
and second " you don't go to a another's temple with your own regulations"
If you want to collaborate and unite with people and a nation you firstly should Respect their tradition and way of life and then try to persuade them why changes will do them better.
Inga, Riga, Latvia
Wang Yan, Shanghai, China
From young, I have always mistrusted the West. In the past they feared a Communist China. To day they fear a rising China. They are all out to disrupt Chinaâs rise. They feel that China is the only big power capable of challenging their hegemony and imperialist agenda. Today they use the Beijing Olympic as a pressure point. Tomorrow they have something else. Thus China must always be on its toes.
I am sure the rest of the world knows that China is not a threat. China wants to prosper and live in harmony with the world especially its neighbors and Asia. Its overtures to India and Japan are sure signs of its good intention. I hope all nations can see through the west true motives and not be a party to their ventures. Tibetans too must remain calm and true to the country. Those who took part in the riot can be described as â the dog that bit the hand that feeds itâ Maybe they have forgotten the old SERF days and they are easily misled.

Ms. Amanda China is not a Superpower. USA is. Do you dare say that the US or Britain do not commit human right abuses. If you are a Christian, we human beings are all sinners. So is it right that you have the right to say that China is a sinner. You howl that China suppressed the Tibetans. Please reveal to the world how China suppress the Tibetans. Give a correct and true account, not the method your media had used to project China as brutal. Would anyone who commits crime invite witnesses. China had prior to the unrest allowed foreign visitors to Tibet.
Can't you West allow the Tibetans and Chinese to live and grow together? Can't China crack down on a rebellion? Why meddle? Is it because the West is never wrong and always right? The West had its glory days. It is time the others Asian and African countries rise up. God is fair. You had your turn now it is others turn. Maybe you like to join China's One World one dream. Live and let live OK

You are a victiim of Western media distortion of the truth in Tibet. The Western superpowers know that they are not speaking the whole truth about Tibet. You just have to visit News checker blog to know who is lying about the recent events in Tibet. You kn ow also that it is useless to boycott the Games. Your not switching on the TV to view the games is not going to work too. The majority of the world population is in Asia and Asians will switch on their TVs and support the Games. You know, we do not mix sports with politics.
Do you know that before the unrest, visitors are welcomed to visit Tibet? If China has caused all those things you Western propoganda is trying to protray then would China allow visits.
You have Chinese staying in UK and you know how hard working they are. Most Chinese are like this and can you blame them for moving ahead? I believe the Tibetans are too religious to catch up.Billions are spent to uplift Tibet. The unrest will not help the Tibetan
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
The recent violence in Tibet certainly brings Chinaâs human rights abuses under world scrutiny before the Olympic Games in Beijing.
How could the International Olympic Committee expect Chinaâs Communist Party dictatorship to honour itâs charterâs principles - ââ¦encouraging the establishment of a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignityâ¦â - while so many of its citizensâ fundamental rights still remain vehemently denied?
If we as a nation cannot find the courage to condemn Chinaâs regime for ALL of its ongoing violations against Tibetans, Christians, Falun Gong practitioners, democracy activists, etc, donât we then become complicit to its crimes?
Many may not favour a boycott, but should any sporting event - even the Olympics - take precedence over the sanctity of life and such a brutal disregard for human dignity? History will surely hold us responsible in the future for any complacency - where our âgold and gloryâ may become all but tarnished.
Jana, Denmark , West Australia
Mr. Zhang Qingli,
You have said that "We are in the midst of a fierce struggle involving blood and fire, a life and death struggle with the Dalai clique." IF that is the case, we Tibetans are ready for the struggle. But ours won't be with blood and fire, but with love and compassion. You are a frog in the pond. Come out of the pond and face the ocean - the international community - who has great respect to His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
Dundub Lama, Sydney, Australia
Some video clips submitted onto YouTube from China about this riot have been deleted, why?????
Because Western media is full of hypocrisy about China and fear to face the truth!
Wang Yan, Shanghai, China
im a chinese who live in China now.my uncle's family lives in tibet.hope they are safe.Im so shcoked by thoese monks wrongdoing, they are bringing shame to Buddism.
i know CCP were evil to tibetians and other chinese, but Mao has died many years ago.CCP has changed a lot.as a buddist i dont think we have no religon freedom.as a chinese i dont think we should lose any land.tibet became a part of China long time ago.we cant lose our land!!!
iris, guangzhou, china
The Dalai Lama, is a holy man and peacemaker, who's kindness and compassion has so moved the world that he is the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the US Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian award it may bestow.
Mr Zhang's tirade reveals the state of his own mind. It is difficult to see how a person projecting such intense negativity could hope to sanely resolve the issues facing Tibet. Mr Zhang's harsh attitude suggests that he may be part of the problem.
Pat Ferre, Payson, Arizona, USA
Itâs good to know that Major Block of European Union is taking front line position against the brutality committed by ruthless communist China on innocent Tibetans. Free Tibet like Taiwan.
satburn, Canada,
Either China is totally ignorant of what bad public relations can do to the country, or the it is trully evil, in calling Dalai a monster.
I am not in Tibet myself so I can't really tell what is going on.
I saw on TV scenes of Han Chinese crying for the death of their family to the riot. I doubt if it is right that the Chinese government moves so many Han Chinese into Tibet in the first place.
Hooi Luan, Penang, Malaysia
A lot of the criticism about China stems from its totalitarian form of government. But this only further demonstrates our deeply entrenched western arrogance in our belief that a democratic state is always the best form of government. But what if it isn't? Right now we have the chance to witness the rise of a country without the same institutions and political beliefs as us, a country more economically vibrant and productive than ours. I feel there is a certain amount of resentment of this from the west, a resentment that such a system can succeed, a resentment accumulated over decades of western propaganda against "Communist" states such as China since the Cold War.
Pete, London, UK
It is blatent ignorance to suggest that the Dalai Lama would condone acts of violence by or towards anyone.

if china was as bad as evryone said it is then the government would be long gone.
i think everyone is determined to see the worse of china and its government. what about the good things they done in the past?
for example didn't the government improve the life of woman in China? didn't the government improve the living standard of the chinese people? And weren't they the ones who pressurised the north koreans to stop building nuclear bombs?

China cannot ever hope to be fully accepted into civilised society while the present authoritarian regime is in charge. It would be wonderful if the Chinese people were able to directly elect their own democratic government for the very first time. It is time for a radical change.
Colin, Carmarthen, UK
Humm, interesting MIKE, so in your mind development trumps human rights and the rights of indigenous people to maintain their own culture and religious beliefs. Sounds like you've been reading Chinese propaganda.
China can invest heavily in Tibet all it wants to, but as long at the state policy includes forcing ethnic Tibetans to renounce their culture and religious beliefs and flooding the region with Han Chinese migrants who further dilute traditional Tibetan culture there will continue to be strong feelings of resentment among ethnic Tibetans.
Heidi, Victoria, Canada
A point to consider, Mike of Sacramento. Yes, the Chinese have brought modern schools, health clinics and economics to Tibet-- but how much of the benefits of such things have the Tibetans themselves seen? How many of the jobs, school slots, etc go to Tibetans and how many go to Han immigrants?
Once you've answered that question, look at the demands the Chinese government makes of the Tibetans and ask yourself how fair a deal this really is?
Michael, Pueblo, Colorado, US
We should perhaps let the tibetan monks know that when they repeat the mantra " The Dalai Lama is responsible and China is helping us...!...
That we know that the Chinese are using torture and that it is one big lie....... then hopefully they would not have to suffer so much pain.
I am amazed that Gordon brown is going to meet the Dalai lama!
It is the first action that he has taken since sliding into the position of PM ... that I admire!
Trish Niblock, Edinburgh, Scotland
We visited the Shaolin temples in 2006, hoping to see the real China. Instead we found a tourist trap, built over the ruins of the real place, and instead of warrior monks we found acrobats performing like circus monkees, all for a fee. The red army used the outer temples for target practice during the cultural revolution, and our guides were angry when we asked questions. The "monks" (performers) today are controlled in every way, the whole thing was as cheap and tawdry as the goods China sells at Wal-Mart. They love to trumpet how ancient their civilization is, but how come Mao had all traces of it wiped out and bulldozed? A dictatorship built on lies can only survive with guns. Look to Taiwan and Singapore to see the real Chinese spirit, when given liberty and a free press.
Wilbur Varela, los Angeles, california, usa
yes HEIDI, look beyond western media propaganda and discover the truth.
Whenever China has an issue, western media will produce an intense focus on it. YES, if you focus a small black dot on a white piece of paper, you will find that black dot become bigger and bigger.
Lots of people simply ignore the fact that China has invested heavily in the region, built up secular schools, hospitals, roads etc, even Dalai Lama admit Tibet can't develop without the help of China. Bhuddism monastaries in Tibet DON"T TEACH MATH!! No one wants a bunch of poeple that can only ready bhuddist script. China want them to become more secular and productive for society like engineers, writers, even politicians. Maybe the way they did it is not appropriate but the intention is good.
MIKE, SACRAMENTO,
@Rob Alcock:
Do you realize that the Dalai Lama has been doing just that all along?? He's been praising China for all it has done but the Chinese govt doesnt really care, all they care about is pointing a finger at him.
Everything is counter-productive when tibetan activists deal with the chinese, be it peaceful protest, violent riots, whatever.
The only thing China understands is the language of money. We have to boycott all chinese goods and boycott the olympics for the chinese govt to even show signs of progress in the talks between the Dalai Lama and China.
Jack Johnson, Miami,
The games are a show, to make China look good. they could care less about brotherhood. I love reading the comments from China, where their own government blacks out the news. There is no free speech, or a free press, and the links to youtube have been shut. Defending China when your own government doesn't trust you enough to make up your own mind shows the kind of robot future we can look forward to as China rises. Thought police will make you admit the "error" of your ways, propaganda while smiling is the order of the day. The quasi-communist hybrid that is the politburo is the enemy of free people everywhere, and the tyranny of the future. BOYCOTT
Wilbur Varela, los Angeles, california, usa
In response to Ying's comment referring to the riots in LA in 1992: it is ridiculous to even compare the situation in LA with the current actions of the Chinese government in Tibet. The US did not violently annex the city of LA in the 1950's. People in LA are free to practice what ever religion they chose, people in Tibet are forced to into "re-education" programs where they must denounce their deeply held Buddhist faith and the Dalai Lama as their spiritual leader. What China is doing in Tibet is cultural genocide and displays their complete lack of regard for basic human rights. I would encourage Ying to look beyond Chinese propaganda and discover the truth.
Heidi, Victoria, Canada

I find it difficult to believe that although western governments are ready to go to war with a middle eastern country or two over 'democracy'. They will stand idly by and watch the chinese commit out and out attrocities in full public view.
Sorry Tibet but you ain't got no oil!
Ian, Exeter,
There is a saying: "the more you tell your neighbour that they are your enemy - the more they will become truely so." (do you expect your brother to love you if you keep telling them you hate them?)
Free tibet activists started it this time. Beijings retaliation is finishing it. Both are doing it to each other.
Time for both sides to start saying: "the more I tell you you are my brother and my friend, the more we will understand each other, live in peace and help each other prosper."
I suggest stop shouting critism at china, it is VERY counter productive for the tibetan people.
If I were the dalai lama, I'd start trying to find ways of telling china they have done a few good things (e.g. provided schools). Then china might respond in kind.
Great leadership is to step back and know that blatant critism isnt constructive. Giving someone face first, working together, is.
Rob Alcock, Swansea, UK
The chinese have one of the worst human rights records of a so called civilised society. When will the west stop supporting the regime by only seeing the size of the market place instead of seeing the size of the problem both now and in the future?
Graham, Billericay,
Human rights is something in short supply here in China, and in short demand as well due to the propaganda warfare carried out. Yet the actions of Tibetans towards Hans in the first place is simply outrageous, and military oppression seems to be the only effective solution in maintaining stability in such a chaotic region. Do not expect China to give up its sovereignty over Tibet, as this would mean possible independence for many other provinces of the country, and this is unacceptable for any other nation in China's position. You Americans and Englishmen deem yourselves the guardians of human rights, well, under such circumstances as now, we have to take into account the human rights of everyone.
Chongyu Ren, Shanghai, China
Western media and people, please do not look at same kind of things from different perspectives. When US treat mobs in Los Angeles without restraint (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riots), did any other country say it is not proper? No, because when police take legally allowed actions against mobs, who are threatening ordinary people's lives, it is just right.
So why do western media only care about China government supressing violence as other countries will also do, but not renounce the mobs who burn shops, attack police office and kill people? This is definitely unfair.
Ying, London, UK
Has a certain cultural revolution twang to it.
What position in your heart does someone have? oh and by the way where do your parents live.

If the people of the world desire personal freedom: freedom to express their beliefs on the meaning of our existence on earth; freedom to practice rituals that provide comfort and reassurance that their existence has a more profound purpose than procreation and physical survival; freedom to possess a self-identity that is not thrust upon them; freedom to hold within their minds unique ideas about the social structure they participate in daily and the freedom to communicate these ideas to others without fear of retribution; and the freedom to feel emotions that come with the expression of their personal identities without fear of condemnation from those who have not attained it for themselves, then those same people are predestined to strive to assist others less free then themselves to achieve the same enlightenment.
From the beginning of human social evolution this activity has been recorded in drawings, symbols, and storytelling. Freedom is human, endemic to our existence. Be free!
Rick Karbon, Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Why do the other superpowers of the world feel its ok to let the Chinese atrocities in Tibet continue without lifting a finger to help, or a voice to criticise the Chinese?! It seems none of the countries taking part in the Beijing Olympics are going to withdraw so perhaps the only thing we can do is withdraw our support by not watching any of the games, either live or broadcast on tv. I for one won't be and feel that anybody who supports the Tibetans and is apalled by the Chinese human rights offenses should do the same.
Kathy, London,
you guys should come to china and get to know the truth because you express any resentment to chinese government.
shirley, guangzhou , China
Be careful...The Communists may not be entirely wrong. Up until last year, I was an active member of Students for a Free Tibet at my university. Reading this article made me rethink my position: "Behind Dalai Lama's Cloak" / http://www.theage.com.au/news/business/behind-dalai-lamas-holy-cloak/2007/05/22/1179601410290.html / It's a shocking how little we know about this man. One thing is obvious though: he has a world-class PR department. I convinced my parents to donate $3500 to their campaign a couple years ago. Oh well...at least it was tax deductible.
Dan Johnson, Cambridge, Massachusetts
If you have never been to Tibet or China, please think twice before making any judgment about Tibet or China. Thank you.
Dory, nn, china
i wish i knew how to help. I have so little faith in government .. i dont think it's worth lobbying. The dalai lama is the epitome of peaceful protest .. he cant fight for himsel or his people .. others have to back them up. A unified response from europe would offend and inflame the chinese .. but we cant just be cowards for the sake of peace. The only way non-violent protest works is if huge numbers of influential people all stand together. If the chinese think the dalai lama is a 'monster' when he is the most soft spoken and intelligent diplomat .. what hope for negotiation?
jay, edinburgh, scotland
Its time for the nations with guts to begin announcing their withdrawal from the Beijing Olympics...
Bill Burrell, Toowoomba, Australia
I am led to believe by his extraordinary declarations that Mr Zhang is not a spiritual person , but then who am I , just a firm believer in orange clad monsters .
Andrew, Paris , France
Amazing point of view, how could we treat like this a nobel peace prize ?
It is all mankind who is touched here.
I hope chinese will one day understand something about tibet and his unique culture.
Mike O'nel, Paris, France
All countries should boycott the games in protest.
Peter, Lymington, uk
There is a striking similarity between the Tibetan struggle for independence and the Independence struggles of Europe's colonies against their European masters.
I wish those artists who did so much to dismantle apartheid in Africa would now use their considerable media power to shine a glaring light on the brutal Chinese masters of Tibet.
Bjork was the first - thank you Bjork for your courage, for giving voice to a people who cannot speak for themselves.
Remy P, Portland, USA
Whilst I agree with the sentiment it is shows complete disregard of reality "they stood up against South Africa...". Boycotting 1/6 of the human population is rather more difficult. We're too deep in financial debt to them for starters. Meanwhile why not do what WE (not THEY) can- stand up against fanatical Jewish colonists AND Hamas, not just Hamas, Let's all denounce Mugabe, the Sudanese government, Iran, and yes, let's stand up against white Christian fanatics and the US gun lobby while we're at it. For now making a stand against powerful nations of like China and Russia is beyond our governments. WE can follow the Dalai Lama's example of passive resistance by not buying their products (no toys kids, sorry).
Nick, London, UK
It it only me or does anyone else feel that some of the events feel staged?
Having heard Dalai Lama talk on numerous occasions if sounds nowhere like his followers attacking Chinese and beating them to death. Regardless of the probably endless frustration that comes from the Chinese occupation and suppression of Tibet.
KM, Antibes, France
My hope is that the world will start to realize what a brutally repressive regime China is. I'm angered that the Summer Olympics will be held in Bejing, and I would love to see large-scale, worldwide boycotts of the games.
Unfortunately, all the world sees is how much profit can be made from trading with China (including leaders here in the US, I'm sad to say). Even hundreds of toxic Chinese products aren't enough to overcome the overwhelming love of money.
Ralph, Mebane, NC
People should boycott the Olympic games as China shows what a tyrant it really is.
Matt, Napoli, Italy
China - one billion people, world superpower, human rights abuse specialist. Tibet, 2 million and under occupation by China since 1951. Life and death struggle for China indeed.
Zhang Qingli could learn from Angela Merkel in Jerusalem.. Go to Llasa and apologize.
Amanda Holden , London ,
The last death throes of a backward, forceful and despicable ideology. Anyone with even the basic level of intelligence understands that buddism, epitomised in the Dalai Lama, has nothing to do with force, China and it's puppets are in fear, and real power always conquers force.
Jason, Woking, Surrey
I do not know what kind animal he is.
but although he knew the communist government could be cruel, he still inspired the young guys to protest in a violent way. Please prove to me that he doesn't utillize young men's enthusiasm to effectuate his goal.
Ziyao GAO, ulm, Germany
Unbelievable! Any one who has read or seen documentaries on the Dalai Lama knows that he is against violence and blood shed. I believe that Zhang is the wolf wrapped in a habit etc.
Nate, Sydney, Australia
It has always been possible for authority, surrounded with instruments of power to force people to parrot the official line. China has done this enough during Chairman Mao's regime. It is a pity the cycle begins again in Tibet, asking children to declare allegiance to the state or face the consequences. The big difference is that this happening today under the WTO regime of shameful silence, the silence of mighty economies that dare not anger the chinese government by pointing to Human rights abuses, lest they miss the market opportunities. I wish the peaceful struggle of the Tibetans to be acknoledged and supported peacefully by people around the world who see the difference between fair and unfair, between just and unjust and between money and truth..
G.Gautama Chennai India
G.Gautama, chennai,
The majority of Tibetan advocate the unification of the whole China which is the home of multiple nations, including Tibetan, Muslism, Han, Mongolian....
Even western media has reported that when Han people was threaten by riots, their Tibetan neighours would help to save their lives. Those who killed or burned on streets are the minority who had received very little education and just looking for a chance to do violence--these kind of people you can also find in the states or Paris where a riot occured just last year.
So please be justice and without bias, as a Tibetan I know what the majority Tibetan are thinking--we enjoyed our peaceful life and, like what Dalai Lama had said himself, enjoyed to live with ethic Han Chinese hand in hand like brothers and sisters.
Please don't blind yourself with some thing which you are acturally not fully understand..thank you. God bless you.
Zaxi Dela, Oxford, UK
its time the UK ,other EU member states and the US withdraw from the Beijing Olympics in protest.

We have to realise that this is still the same administration that slaughtered its own students in Tianenman Square. They haven't changed & they won't change.
Whatever happended to the United Nations Charter & the right of a people to self determination?
S.J.Morris, Lichfield, UK
It has been going on for many years. At last the younger people of TIibet have the courage to stand up against the bullish chinese. The Tibetans need to know that there are many people that support them in there right to reclaim there home land.
Rose in Dorset, UK
Rose, Bourmouth, Dorset
I really believe we need to boycott the olympic games to show China that this extreme bullying is unacceptable in a modern world that it so wants to be part of. It is Chinese leadrship rather than the Dalai Llama who is the wolf monster.
Let us set up alternative Games and leave China to their ruin
milliken, Southampton, Hampshire
So what are we going to do about the Olympic games in regard to China's human rights record?
Max, London,
The Chinese are as obcene as they are stupid with regard to this position. I have been to Lhasa and seen the level of underlying resentment against the Chinese. In may ways I felt sorry for some of the Chinese who had been migrated there as they looked uncomfortabke in their surroundings. Providing greater rather than more restriced religeous freedom and respecting the alligance to the Dalai Lama who probably do China far more long term good than this denial and attempt to own the hearts and minds of his people.
Martin Gandar, London, UK
qingli is the monster of tibet and so is wen of china
richard, pittsburgh, pa
This is sickening to hear of reprogramming of students. The Chinese leaders have little room to call other people Monsters. At what point will the leaders around the world demand Chinese government to stop their violence against Tibetans. They stood up against South Africa's apartheid system and it finally crumbled. Tibet needs our help and they need it now.
