POKHARAN Indian Army soldiers take up positions in an exercise codenamed Brazen Chariots at the Pokharan firing ranges in Western Rajasthan. Military observers from 60 countries watched the joint army and air force war games in the Thar desert area.
The exercise in the region, where India conducted a series of underground nuclear tests in 1998, was meant to show that the country has become a significant military power. The mobilisation was staged 60 miles from Pakistan, but officials said it was not directed at their neighbour. The nuclear-armed rivals have fought three wars since independence in 1947.
India’s 1.3 million-strong army is one of the world’s largest, but is hampered by outdated equipment. It is now emerging as one of the world’s biggest buyers of military hardware and has been holding exercises with several countries including America and China, which India fought in a brief but bloody border war in 1962. I dont think India receives "aid". As an "Indian popping up.".. I think you are partially correct. Mr Payman, but we are trying to overcome all the problems cited by you. China does it differently....under the military boot./clout. Not clear as what great civilisation is referred to. yes, we are aping the west......we cant survive on sanke charming you know and we have got enemis all around us and many within as well....
Ravinder Jain, Mumbai, India
I know some indian is going to pop up and ferociously oppose me. but I am going to have my dime here.
India might someday sort of a power. but I don't see it become a great civilization like it once was.
it is pursuing the same capitalistic tendencies. insatiable greed. utter disregard for poor which india has many and utter disregard for infrastructure is rampant.
class caste system, is going to pull it back for decades to come and miserable infrastructure is not going to be helpful.
China on the other hand is paying attention to its infrastructure and its poor population, it is also paying attention to independent development rather than foreigners coming in and opening shops inside.
the other problem is oil and resources. By the time India and China work out their problems, the earth's resources will be depleted and it is likely that we enter a global repression-like trend which is going to result in wars and more problems.

China must keep up? China's defense budget is 4 times that of India. Of course..Tony already knew that.
Andy, Chicago, USA
India has got loads of Billionaires and spends obscene amounts on its military. While courted by Russia, Europe, Israel and America! Yet it receives aid for being a third World country.
China must keep up. Japan must keep up. Pakistan must keep up. Iran tries to keep up.
This can only lead to someplace bad.....
Tony Passarelli, Nottingham, uk
India is a great military power. This is natural in view of her size and fast growing economic strength. However,India also has perhaps the largest number of the world's poor.It has many serious problems such as caste, religious intolerance and regional hostilities. These are extremely complex and difficult problems the solution of which will require all the economic, social and political resources which India can muster.Of course,if as a result of ideological commitment and competent leadership solutions are found to these,India may become a great civilization with tremendous influence over the course of history of the world. That may be the realization of Mahatma Gandhi's vision of India.
It may sound naive, but India may be in danger of losing the chance of becoming a great society and a great civilization as the cost of becoming a leading global military power.

Since the peace flows out from the barrel of the gun, India perhaps needs such a strong army inherited and patterned on the British military. However it needs to be modernised. Shouldn't an emerging democratic power possess a strong defence force to ensure regional stability.
