A powerful US politician added her voice yesterday to the worldwide chorus condemning China’s crackdown in Tibet and demanded an international investigation.
“The situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world,” Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, said as she strolled arm-in-arm with the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the restive Himalayan region.
“If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China’s oppression in China and Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world,” Ms Pelosi told thousands of cheering Tibetans in Dharamsala, the seat of Tibet’s government in exile.
Undeterred by international criticism of the clampdown, Chinese officials issued a new wanted list. They also said that security forces had opened fire on a demonstration in the neighbouring Sichuan province, injuring four people.
The Number Five wanted list was broadcast by Lhasa Television, which showed more grainy photographs taken from video footage and stills of those taking part in what Beijing has dubbed the “March 14 Incident”. A total of 29 people are wanted in connection with the violence.
A teenage boy, listed as fourth on the list, has already turned himself in and has told reporters he deeply regretted his actions and had not understood their consequences, state media said. Most Wanted Three on the list had been caught, but no details of his identity were available.
Officials of the Tibet Autonomous Region have imposed a news blackout, authorising only the state Xinhua news agency, China Central Television and Phoenix television to operate in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Local media must follow central government orders.
State-run Tibet Television continued to show footage of last week’s riots, including scenes of maroon-robed monks throwing rocks at police, protesters kicking in shop fronts and plumes of black smoke from burnt cars. Newsreaders echoed the central government’s insistence that the violence was orchestrated by the “Dalai clique”.
Across Lhasa, people were being required to denounce the Dalai Lama. From government officials to children, all had to stand in public and attack their exiled god-king.
Tibet Television showed a teenage girl taking part in a patriotic education session. She said: “We should distinguish right from wrong and protect national unity. We must expose the ugly face of the Dalai clique.”
Tibetans disputed the government report that four people were wounded and none killed when police opened fire to disperse anti-Chinese riots in southwestern Sichuan province. One ethnic Tibetan resident of Aba prefecture said he believed that several died when police fired on protesters attacking officials and state buildings.

Mrs Pelosi, the US lost its moral ground with Guantanamo Bay. As long as prisoners are still held there, you have no moral grounds to address the Chinese on Tibet or human rights.
The US is the biggest practioner of double standards. Get your house in order first.
V Tan, London,
If Tibet has allways been a part of China then why did they need to invade it and control it
Simon M, Oxford, UK
wrong china has killed a million people in tibet since it invaded that is a lot more people than have been killed in iraq. you people in china need to read some non censored information
Max Rollins, nashville,
The government of the US is a challenge to the conscience of the world. More have and will die in Iraq than in Tibet. Iraq is about American greed. Tibet about China security.
Nancy Pelosi is a hypocrite politician . She will do better as a buddhist nun if she wants to bring peace.
Obviously her target is China. She sows discord and approves of hooliganism.
The english language is funny. Violence by Muslim is terrorism. Violence by Tibetans is uprising. US should declare if CIA has a role in Tibet protests. Further acts to undermine the host of Olympics will show the true colors of Western powers. (ie, to bully China). She should be ashame of herself. I am no fan of China but Nancy does no justice by naked support of the Dalai Lama (another agent of western powers).
Basil, singapore,
Ms Pelosi should first go to Iraq and Guantanamo and demand an international investigation into the atrocities commited by her democractic government.
Her action only serve to demonstrate the double standards and duplicity that America practices in its dealings with China.
Hung, kuala lumpur,
Chinese government is definitely not afraid of Dalai, because when it comes to the union of our country, 99% of the people in China are standing by the government, including Tibetan civilians, no matter whether they support the CCP.Check the comments on Sina.com or Sohu.com written by people from different places of different nations. With the support of people, China has nothing to fear.
The reason of China's toleration to Dalai is that China has his own plan of dealing with him.China want a peaceful environment to develop his economy,to improve the living standard of his people,so China's diplomatic strategy must serve it. China will not give up what he is pursuing just because of Dalai. That's not a wise decision, because that's what Dalai wants of China.

Tibet has been a part of China since about three thousand years ago.The cental government of the new China took over Tibet in 1950s, when slavery was still conducting there. Slaves were set free, and enslavers lost their privilege.
Afterwards, those who lost his privilege tried to get slavery back, but they failed and were exiled from China.Dalai is one of them, being the lead of them.
Please learn the modern history of Tibet before you comment on this issue.
US government is very happy to do something that hurt China. I can't understand them.
Wendy, Shandong, China
I don't know why the western media always seems to criticize the Chinese government, regardless of the truth.
They used to blame that our government tried to fool the public by controling the media and public opinion. However, this is what they are doing to their people now, it is sad and bad.
I want to say to western people, to better know about Tibet and what Tibetans think, try not to only listen to Dalai Lama and their group or ally. Because it is just they that plan and carry out the riots and tragedies in Tibet. If they want to claim "human rights" or "freedom" for the Tibetans, they should first ask the Tibet public, I think the public will in no way welcome the way they are proceeding in the name of so-called "human rights or freedom. "

Chin colonized tibet in very begining of 1960s, while india went
on with it's democracies, as always for hundereds years, what
China is doing to all it's neighbour is not smething new!
I am one UK -citizen certainly will thank Nancy Pelosi from
my heart for taking interest in Tibetan community ! Ken Tiwari

Ladies and gentleman,
Let's forget about all those political jargons for a moment and regain our reason and consconscience. Stop fingerpointing when you yourself have been kept blind by whatever you may call it :the media, government cesnorship, or what! Facts tell more than fanfare. One such fact and the strange thing is that during my stay in the US, hardly did i manage to watch on TV a single piece of news that is postive about China. Ever since then, my outlook on US media had taken a U-turn. Now i am consoling myself with the words, "You can fool some people some time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time." I am fooling or being fooled ? Anyone can tell me but the media, be it CNN or VOA!

There is no way for a country to survive without a common language. Even India, with its diverse languges that are mutually unintelligible, uses English to communicate with each other. Here in the United States people are talking about making English the official language for the same reason. Look at the Okinawans of Japan, the fact that they speak Japanese today does not keep them from having their own heritage. You must understand how complex a country China is, how it inherited its territories of Sinkiang, Manchuria, Tibet, and Taiwan, how it lost Mongolia to the Russians, which was a puppet state until only a few years ago, how it almost lost Manchuria to the Japanese, which also set up a puppet state there, and how it is in a Tug of war with the USA in the Taiwan situation, which is in essense a puppet state of the USA (please research if you don't believe me). At this time, stability is still the number one concern of most Chinese people. It is unfortunate, but it is true.
Mike, St. Louis, USA
Tibet incident is typical of splitting the country acts of terrorism, but the Chinese government has not suppressed patience. I hope that Western countries do not always create inconsistent with the facts of speech, distorted view. The United States has always advocated human rights, but in fact the United States is the issue of human rights around the world the worst.
China advised the United States, or the United States to manage its own affairs it. Always thought that he is not the world police. If unconvinced, and then a war between China and Vietnam look at the campaign and the Korean campaign! ! ! Not a lesson?

Does Chinas rule in Tibet stop the Tibetans from doing anything harmless?
I really want to know more about what Tibet is claiming to have suffered over the years, as to why they are so angry, as currently I cant find anything about their complaint.
All I hear is "chinese opression", but what exactly has been oppressive and harmful to Tibetans, or is it just some kind of territorial thing where the monks are peeved that they no longer make the rules?
I am not on either side, just tryin to understand.
Clare, cambridge, UK
In 1860, when the South decided to secede from the Union, did
President Lincoln allow it?? Seccession was intolerable because the South is a part of US and like what one had said,
South and the Union is one and inseperable. Tibet is a part of China, one and inseperable, now and forever. We should not interfer because this is China's internal affair.Never should we impose our thoughts on the others. The future of Tibet should be determined by Tibetans and Chinese people.
jackie, xi'an, China
People are aware that the innocent have suffered and died in the riots. The Dalai Lama has said he would resign if violence continues. How much more committed can you get?
The world remembers Tiannamen Square (1989) and is deeply concerned over how China deals with dissenters, let alone rioters.
News in the west is bite-sized, it helps to glean information from many quality sources to get an idea of the full picture. The Chinese media (that we receive) has an unfortunate habit of telling people vehemently what to think which leads few to think that truth is on the agenda. Young people mindlessly repeating propaganda horrifes.

Tibetans need to learn Chinese to progress and be employed. InUS people are learning Mandarin to effectively do business in China. Chinese people are learning English because English is important. The English did not force the Chinese who think it is in their best interest The Chinese also need not force the Tibetans. Thus If the Tibetans refuse to adapt they would be left behind and only have themselves to blame. Not the Chinese and definitely not the Govt.who is trying their best to develop Tibet.
What do you mean Govt greedy? Millions if not billions have been spent on development in Tibet. Great potentials are in store. However, the Tibetans are so blinded by the heaps of Western distortion fed to the Dalai Lama. If China neglects Tibet West will claim marginalisation anddiscrimination. Now they say it is human rights and genocide. What else can I say with the West bent on disrupting China's progress and harmony.

Does Nacy Pelosi understand that the western moral high ground is built on the support of the majority of the people in the world? The west lost most of its moral authority by invading Iraq a few years ago. You are making the same mistake again here. How can you claim your moral high ground by attempting to install an ancient slavery ruller inside China?
Kevpgh, Exeter, England
I'm sorry but not surprised at all what has happened in Tibet. It's only a matter of when it happens. What I wanted to say is that the western countries, especially US and some leading countries in EU should be condemned as well, since they have no guts to offend the Chinese government in order to maintain their economic interests in China. The more powerful China becomes, the less likely the western countries can have influence in the so-called 'internal affairs' by Chinese government. It's ironic that the major western countries have been blasting human-rights suppression in some developing countries and can almost do nothing to deal with China, which has one of the worst human-rights record in the world. China is still a communist country with one-party dictatorship. Just take a look at some comments from China in this column, which are 'unanimously' favour China whatever their government has done. Han Chinese people have been taught not to criticise their government!!
Wen, London,
I do not quite understand what led the Tibetans to start killing Chinese people. I understand that pre 1950s the monks ruled Tibet, but what opression have the people of Tibet faced from the Chinese in recent years? Have they been being mistreated, I am unclear as to why these monks started killing people last week?
Clare, cambridge, UK
Tibet is and always been part of China for many thousands of years. It was invaded by Britain as a colony and then China took it back.
Asking China to let go of Tibet is like asking American white to let go of USA and let the Red Indians take over the country. American white has less history in USA than China has on Tibet.
I wouldn't even mention about Iraq. Shame on American hyprocicy.
James, Fremont, California
After Dalai Lama said there was nothing he could to to stop the violence, he also lost his claim to high moral ground. He talked so much about peace for years but said nothing about people being hit and burnt by the tibetans while shouting his name.
Chris , Vancouver, Canada
it is a long time that i focus on western news media and ignore chinese official report. however,it upsets me this time on Tibet issue. a photo partly clipped was released on the media: the clipped part was the mob attacking the police car with block. why they did this? in order to show the "crackdown".....and today, China released lots of photos about this riot....to my surprise, some news media in west like AFP, select the ones in which the paramilitary policemen were patrolling to release, but the majority of photos about the detail of riot are all ignored....to lie has two types: one is "saying black is white" ,the other is "only saying the black"...western news media, how can i belive you? ...i am not saying the politics but the true thing...
Lee, Beijing, China
The truth is Chinese fears true. Chinese communist regime "STUTTING OFF" Tibetans from the world. Chinese are forcing Tibetans to learn Chinese, speak as Chinese, eat as Chinese, talk as Chinese and think as Chinese. Tibetan people in their territory have no right to say to "NO" against Chinese greedy government policy, that is why Tibetans are angry, frasterated and hangry for freedom, seeking they human rights. Tibetan plateau belongs to Tibetan people, not Chinese. Chinese must to respect the Tibetan people's dignity and soil. Shame on China.
Jack, HCMC, Vietnam
It is bizzare how people can claim moral high grounds while turning their eyes away from those innocent people stabbed or burned to death in the riot.
The real issue is what a government should do to protect civilians, and deal with extremists of all kinds or terrorists in modern terms. Chinese government certainly isn't doing enough on both ends. It ought to act together with Dalai Lama instead of accusing him.
Tom Clark, Chicago, IL
Friends in China: Your government will not allow any outside observers or reporters to witness what is happening inside Tibet. If your government is telling you the truth, why do they refuse to let anyone witness their actions? You are absolutely wrong when you say the Western media is only telling one side of this story: Absurdly, ironically wrong! A free press presents all sides, so the reader -- not the government -- can decide the truth. There are descriptions of horrors committed by BOTH sides in this conflict in every newspaper and TV station in the West. While only ONE side is represented in the Chinese media, because of government censorship.China is a totalitarian regime! It rules by brute force, and by oppression. It has committed cultural genocide and murder in Tibet for decades. If you are unaware of this is it because you live in a country where freedom of speech does not exist. If you are unaware of this, it is because your government is lying to you.

I don't believe how one eyed the American views are on this issue; as with a lot of issues. You are all so brainwashed and against any country not bowing down to your supposed rights,( of which if you look at your-selves, you are the most governed nanny country in the world). with a leadership very immature;
I have worked alongside and fort alongside Americans and only find them to be easily led and perswaded to believe anything;
We have the whole coverage of these riots in China and also I can get outside news through the Internet; The Tibetan reports are no more or less than if in Washington or Sydney or London. Only the fact remains is the Americans are so anti Chinese; If you pull your heads (American) out of the sand or out of your doorways, you will see that you are more disliked by the world. Wake up and have a good look at the governments you Free people are electing.
J.G.Taylor, Perth, West. Australia
China is afraid because they are guilty and the world is catching more glimpse of the regime behind it's communist mask .It's a matter of united nation and all the member nation to take a humane action leaving behind diplomacy. We are dealing with a communist nation and diplomacy to them means more death during those time.Every minute counts...save tibet /peace
tenzin, new york city, united state
It's really a pity that so called democratic west world read the truth like that. what i know it totally different! Dalai Lama arranged all of this. He is by no means a simple monk. I just don't understand, remember what hanpped in Paris several years ago, why it is a legal action in Paris, but illegl in China? We're expecting a fair report! remember, thousand of chinese people in tibet is suffering from Dalai Lama!
gaojunjun, BeJing, PRC
I have become more and more incensed over the one sided reporting of the Tibetian situation, we constantly hear about the innocent Tibetians who have lost their lives in this uprising. But there has been no mention of the innocent ethnic Chinese who have been killed by the rioters!!! Why are these peoples deaths not being reported? Why is Nancy Pelosi not denouncing the rioters for these murders??
I think its about time the World heard the otherside of the story!!
Mark Jones, Chendgu,, Sichuan, China
Now most Chinese people realizse US politician's words are always based on benefits of US, not based on objectiveness.
Welch, Chongqing, China
China is losing any moral authority it might possibly have had on the issue. The international community should not condone this crackdown by sending athletes to the Olympics.
Gonzalo R. Diaz, Atlanta, Goergia
Why is China so afraid of the Dalai Lama, a simple monk with no country ? China with all their weapons, power and money couldn't destroy the man of peace. If the Chinese have any common sense or civilized mind, they should learn a lesson from the Dalai Lama and let the Tibetans practice their religious culture freely and make a peace with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people.
sonam zoksang, kingston, new york, usa
I wouldn't believe anything coming from the Beijing government on Tibet. It's time for a free Tibet, and they need to revert all land back pre-1950 to the ethnic Tibetans, so they can restore their land and culture before it's to late. Why would the Olympic committee give the honor of the Olympic's to a communist government that commit cultural genocide.
Tedd, San Diego, California
Why you suggest the children were forced to do that? Just like China calls the overseas Tibetans brainwashed by western media, that girl and other children could have just been influenced by Chinese media and willingly followed with the government line. Do you have evidence that they were being forced? Or, let me say, it is just your guess?
Tony, New Haven, USA
Is it up to the Goverments of the free world to put pressure on Beijing to stop the oppression in Tibet. Inside China only one message is conveyed and it is not one of freedom and independance for Tibet and it's people.
Tobes, Guangzhou, China
