The monks of Kirti monastery in Aba, Sichuan, western China, are said to have found a 16-year-old schoolgirl among up to 23 Tibetan protesters killed when Chinese police opened fire last Sunday.
Lhundup Tso, the youngest reported victim of the Chinese crackdown, still had her school satchel strapped to her back. Her body was taken to the monastery with the other dead to document what Tibetan officials claim was a massacre.
They fear it may be one of several carried out by Chinese armed police in an attempt to put down the largest Tibetan uprising in almost 20 years.
Tso is said to have been among 2,500 Tibetans, led by monks, who marched towards the local government headquarters chanting, “Long live the Dalai Lama,” and other independence slogans. They set off at 11.30am and were confronted by about 200 members of the People’s Armed Police, in combat kit and carrying machineguns.
According to the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, which said last week that it had confirmed 23 deaths, the police opened fire to disperse the crowd.
The centre’s director, Urgen Tenzin, said the shooting had caused panic and a stampede. Tso was found lying face up on the ground, but monks who took her body to the monastery said she had been shot in the back of the head.
Lying nearby was her fellow pupil at Aba Tibetan middle school, a 17-year-old named Norbu, who had been taken to the monastery and photographed along with five other victims. His thin torso was smeared with blood and there was a bullet hole in his chest.
The only available picture of Tso shows her very much alive. She is posing for the camera, with her black shoulder-length hair tucked behind her ears and a smile joining the ruddy cheeks that identify the Tibetans of this exposed farming region high on the Tibetan plateau.
Her father Jigshe and mother Sherab are believed to be semi-nomadic farmers who move to higher pastures in the summer months. They were said to be especially proud of their daughter, who was described as one of the brightest students in her year and top of the class in maths and Tibetan language.
Chinese government reports claim there were no deaths in Aba on Sunday, but Xinhua, its official news agency, reported that police had opened fire at protesters “in self-defence”.
Demonstrators, many of them Tso’s fellow pupils, had attacked schools, hospitals and the government headquarters with petrol bombs and rocks, the agency reported. They had set fire to cars and Chinese-owned shops and attacked local Chinese with knives. The rioters had even burnt down a police station and tried to seize weapons from its officers, Xinhua claimed.
Tibetan campaigners dismiss the claims as “propaganda”.

Olympics in Paris? Maybe we all should read up on Operation Unicorn and Operation Turquoise.
Maybe award the Olympics to Britain--now where shall we start ? Look up Lieutenant Colonel Sir Francis Edward Younghusband . Or maybe the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in India .
Where else? Canada...where the US does it killings, you can be sure Canada will be right there with her big brother.

I agree with the views that violence is not the way to protest. But let's look at the circumstances: Your country is taken over by a military regime and for 50 years you try, peacefully, to get the world to understand what you are going through, that your people are being tortured and killed, that you have lost your jobs, your religious symbols of compassion are considered a threat to a regime of fear and your history is burned and looted. Then you attempt to simply voice your opinion and you are met with yet more repression. The irony of it all is that in an attempt to keep the Dalai Lama away from the Tibetans the Chinese government has brought this upon itself. What kept the Tibetans peaceful for 50 years was exactly his message of tolerance and peaceful means of solving conflicts. The generation that caused the trouble is a generation that was never allowed to listen to that message, but that has learned from the guards to solve conflict by force. They are learning the lessons.

China is China and that's why this is happenning... most of the time the Chinesse government want to be above others... this is not a media war like somebody said, this is real problems caused by China to Tibet... Let's be clear Mister Bob from U K, China = peaceful, when??? I don't think you had read the news lately...
Jefferson Jimenez, West Haven, Connecticut, USA
If China is such a great place for minorities to live in, why were 6,000 Tibetan monastries destroyed and why do the Chinese communist party oversee all Tibetan religous affairs.
I also must point out the overwhelming replies on this site are from China as never seen before.
Is it the slient majority or those privilaged few who have access to the internet.
Why also are 98% of Chinese in support of action against the Tibetans, is this the same 98% with no access to the internet, live on 3rd world wages and probaly wouldnt vote for the unelected ruling communist party, if there were ever free elections.
Philip, Oxford, England
How on earth can you possibly prove any of this?
A schoolchild of 16 years old was definitly killed? in a province of china most of you will know nothing about?
Sichuan by the way is spelt Szechuan on your takeaway menu - probably the only place any of you have seen it.
Lets be clear, the war here is being fought buy the Media only, China appears largely peaceful and prosperous against a backdrop of severe and harsh political scrutiny by sandal wearing lefties who need to find alternative employment.
Bob, Sheffield, UK
Cindy the reason for the bias is that two normally opposite sides of the political spectrum (and media) are united in their opinion against the China. The "left" are just supporting the underdog like they did in South Africa, and are doing in Palestine: "The victims against oppression". The "right" have a problem, with not the fact China are agressive and firm but they are not the standard western European players and they threathen European power of Geopolitics and would love to it it being broken up. I don't think they give two hoots about the Tibetans. I am very happy at least the Times is reporting from both viewpoints
Raymond, the norf, UK

Cindy, in my view, it was not due to "the huge cultural gap", rather, it was mainly due to the cultural egoism. The countries in much closer cultural ties, for instance, the British Isles, France and Germany, were in two vital conflicts in the last century due to cultual egoism - these two conflcts were the gravest in human history. Today, these three counrtires are still trying hard to prevent their own cultural egoism.

Sometimes, I ask myself why the west would rather believe hearsays spread by some Free Tibetan organisations and not believe what the Chinese media is reporting, why they sympathise with Tibetans but not innocent Chinese who were murdered, some even burned to death including children by Tibetans? I asked myself again and again, thought about it for a long time. I know Chinese government doesn't have a shining record in terms of human rights, but does the western governments don't as well, why western people would hold such a bias against Chinese government and people, whatever it has done is treated with such suspicion. To be honest, Chinese government has done tremendous good to develop Tibet, why none mentioned this, why none mentioned the death and destruction caused by those Tibetan violence? Why why why!!! Why the west media is so biased? I think the only answer is misunderstanding, despite all those efforts, there is still a huge gap between the west and the east.
Cindy, London,
The huge cultural gap between the west and the east is just like the huge cultural gap between the west and the Islamic world. I guess the western governments are asking themselves why they were so hated in the Muslim world? We Chinese are asking ourselves as well why we were so mis-portrayed by the western media? Chinese communist party is not an angel but not a monster as well. Its aim is not just to stay in power, it wants to do good to Chinese people, and Tibetan people as well, and sadly the message just does not get across to the world. I think the west should make more efforts to understand China, Chinese people and our culture. And we Chinese should let the rest of the world know that we are a peace loving nation, and the Chinese government is not like what it's portrayed by the western media. If those misunderstanding were not solved, it would be like a time bomb.
Cindy, London,
Its really sickening to see these reports. It is also amazing to realize who insecure the chinese "communist" leadership is when they relate to religious people. They must know in their hearts that their communist ideoogy is dead. They must fear losing their wealth and priviledge to a new revolution. Perhaps Mao was correct when he wrote "REVOLUTION IS NOT A TEA PARTY" This may be the begining of a new leadership in China. At least I hope so.
Troy Aiken, Boston, MA
Tibet is a part of China. Any goverment couldn't allow the country's a part independence. Considering Tibetain is much different from ethnic Han, the government sould give them more autonomy than they have had. The balance may be difficult but have to do.
Deepsea, Beijing, China
I wish that all involved would just stop. The whole problem here is that people are pushing their beliefs on others.
How many schoolchildren have to die before someone says enough? I'm getting the gist that people are fighting over who is the lesser of two evils, just like America and Iraq a the moment.
The irony here is that all these things are fought for freedom but will result in the exact opposite for more people than now.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't fight for their right, but that I would have hoped the human race to be a little more developed by now.
Here's to the ignorant planet! (with the exception of a few of course).

It is WRONG to protest by killing others, setting fires.
Rich person has been brainwashed by the american propaganda. They just think that we Chinese are all poor and illiteracy.
I hope that you respect us as human too. We have the right to protect ourselves. If someone killed your family, setting fire at your home while the police say that "let the killer to do what he wants,he should have freedom",is it really what you want?
Do you guys really believe that it is a peaceful protest in Lhasha?
Andre, Hong Kong, China
@Taty
Yes, and it is also wrong to stone old men on bicycles for their race, or burn businesses and properties of those who have made the effort to settle down and "try" to improve trade with the locals.
Or would it be "right" if the chinese residents burnt McDonalds and Starbucks branches in their towns?

China will do whatever it likes within it's own borders.
The rest of the World do not have to legitimise their repressive regime by supporting the Olympics though.
Let's have an alternative Olympics - in Paris.
I would have suggested Britain but even 2012 seems a bit over optomistic.
Paris has all the sporting facilities already - why not use them?
GJB, Slough, Berkshire
Steven, well maybe if your wonderful government would allow us access to Tibet maybe we could visit and see how those terrible Tibetans are prospering under your lenient rule. Even when I visited years ago, my travels were well restricted to strictly tourist areas. If the Tibetans are so fortunate to be lead by your wonderful grip what you got to hide?? Why couldn't I travel without being restricted or followed? Nothing to hide huh? Whatever.
John, Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Taty Sena,
Have u ever seen the footage shot by western countries' tourists?
In these footage, some Tibetan attacked or even killed innocent passers-by and employees of the nearby shops, and set fire to the shops.
So, can these people called PROTESTERs? I do think RIOTERs or MOB are better words to describe them!
Don't turn a blind eye to these rioters' horrible crime!
Roy, Shanghai, China
I'm sure that the Chinese Communist Party's "repudiations" of this report will be charming. "Tibetan teenage girls are the world's worst terrorists!" I haven't read so much propaganda since the weapons of mass distraction.
Lyndon Birch, Toronto, Canada
Dalai Lama is a dictator. So your guys human right and democracy, it means dictatorship.
Joe, London, England
I hope people in the western countries could learn something about Chinese history. Tibet has been part of China for a long time.If they want to know what is going on in China, they should visit China and see what is happening here with their own eyes. I wonder what British government will do if some Scotish protest in Londong streets and want to be independent of U.K
Steven Sun, 丽æ±, Yuen Nan, China
peaceful protest is basic human right, but protesting by ways of setting fire, assauting and killing innocent people is crime behavior. addionally, why western press only showed the voice from these alleged monks, protesters, but not the chinese or chinese government. I don't think western press are unprejudiced. there are evidnces that some of them forge or misused the photos which they think the chinese police are abusing tibetans. and I want to say, there is no common tibetans against the government, it is organized gang. it is different, do y understand.
yuansong, cardiff,
It is not wrong to voice an opinon but it is WRONG to loot, burn, kill and commit crimes doing it. No civilized world allows illegal and unlawful protest. It is NOT wrong to enforece Law and Order. So please look at both sides of the story before making accusations.
Gloucho, Los Angeles , USA CA
This poor person has been brainwashed by the chinese propaganda, though we know a lot of the people who post in these articles are part of the chinese machine. Let's clarify things.. It is NOT wrong to protest, it is Wrong to SHOOT at the protesters like the chinese guards have done and it is WRONG to prevent people from having a voice and an opinion when their country gets occupied by invading chinese forces.
Taty Sena, NYC, USA
