Far from heeding international calls for dialogue with the Dalai Lama, China has accused Tibet’s exiled god-king of colluding with Muslim terrorists to destabilise the country before the Olympic Games.
State-run newspapers have issued prominent leading articles that are part of a campaign to portray the Dalai Lama as the mastermind of the deadly riots that have rippled through Tibet and ethnic Tibetan communities.
In Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, yesterday local TV issued the No 7 list of those most wanted in connection with the riots on March 10 in which Chinese officials say 22 people were killed, including a baby boy burnt to death in a garage and one paramilitary police officer.
The latest list included six women and one monk and brought to 45 the number of people the security forces were seeking. The police sent out text messages to all mobile phone users in Lhasa urging those involved to surrender and exhorting others to turn in rioters in return for a reward.
The Dalai Lama’s government-in-exile in the Indian town of Dharamsala has put the death toll at 99, comprising 80 in Lhasa and 19 shot dead as the violence spilt over into neighbouring provinces with a large Tibetan population.
China’s Communist rulers have presented the violence as a plot supported by only a minority of Tibetans. The People’s Daily said that the Dalai Lama had never abandoned violence after fleeing China in 1959 after a failed revolt against Beijing. “The Dalai Lama is scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage to force the Chinese Government to make concessions to Tibetan independence.”
It also accused Tibet’s spiritual leader of planning attacks with the aid of violent Uighur separatist groups seeking an independent East Turkestan for their largely Muslim people in the northwestern Xinjiang region of China. It said: “The Dalai clique has also strengthened collusion with East Turkestan terror organisations and planned terror activities in Tibet.”
The Dalai Lama described the accusations by China as baseless. He said yesterday: “I always support the Olympics should . . . take place in Beijing . . . so that more than one billion human beings, that means Chinese, they feel proud of it.”
— Ma Ying-jeou, President-elect of Taiwan, said that he was ready to accept two pandas offered by China three years ago as a gesture of friendship to an island it sees as a renegade province. He also has vowed to work for peace between the two countries (Sophie Yu in Taipei writes). He said, however, that any talks must be on an equal footing and would depend on China removing missiles aimed at Taiwan.

Dear Philip, you are all over the place from one article to another.
The majority of critics are Western like you. There are some neutral and some west who support the Chinese. Among the Asians, there are many who are pro Chinese like me and some who are influenced by your West.
Try to understand, majority does not mean you win or you are right. There are many who supports China but cannot write in English so their absence. Just imagine if all the 1.3 billion Chinese post their comments on this site you will be drown in it. Times on line of course would love it Wow 1.3 billion more viewers.
Philip, you get the picture. China worry? Please elaborate.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
I didn't realize there were so many comedians in China ? It makes sense though, after all the have nothing to laugh at !
Wait until they see the financial results after the Olympics !
Wade Arnold, Oberdachstetten, Germany
I agree with Jerry Yang. Ten years ago, when internet was not that popular, you can hardly hear the true vioce from normal chinese people. All the information you got about China was given by your journalists, no matter how true or fake it was. Now days, thanking to internet , you guys at least can hear our voice, no matter you tend or not to. It is progress.
I hope more communication and more understanding between East and West. For britons, maybe take a superior attitude toward others is one of your conventions, comprehensible though, it'd better to change a little.
Seba, Tai'an, China
"I think this time the chinese are really worried, and rightly so."
Maybe this is a sign that China is finally opening up to the world, and many Chinese (whether living in the West or within China) dare and, more importantly, have the means, to express their opinions (in this case, the majority tend to hold the same view as the Chinese government). I am for one a Chinese who live in the West, and I don't always agree with the Chinese government -- in fact, I used to be more against than now, and in the case of Tibet, I think that the government should let the Western media in, instead of banning it.
This is not a sign of Chinese being worried, it is a sign of progress. Remember, there are 1.3 billions Chinese, so be prepared to hear more opinions of Chinese that may be very different opinions from what you are used to in the West, in particular, in matters of Chinese national interest and security.
Unlike "embedded journalists" in Iraq, we are not all
"agents of China", LOL.
Jerry Yang, NYC, NY, USA
Wow!!
How many of these comments are pro-chinese?????
I think this time the chinese are really worried, and rightly so.

How could the soldiers be killed by the rioters if they have guns and allowed to kill? And how could that be if the riots were governed by the police?
Sergey, Kiev, Ukraine
My friend who married a tibetan woman said there were many innocent people, including Han and Tibetan, were hurt even burn to death by the crazy rioters. 98% tibetans were stunned by the riot too. As to "much of them were set to trucks(60 people in each), taken out of city and shot to death.", my friend's tibetan wife said that must be rumor cause her relatives and friends living in Lsasa had never heard of this. On the contrary some policemen and military soliders were killed by rioters very brutally.
Wolvisiky, Jinan, Shandong China
From this event, I know what is the standard of western Media!!! Even I don't believe Chinese newspapers, but I also don't belive western media too from now. The western medias are so arrogant when they face Chinese issues. They should get away, You have no qualification to make indiscreet remarks or criticisms on China. Please go home to ask your history teachers which countries had sett so many colonies on the world and destried many cultures. Whatever I believe China will become a peaceful superpower regardless you like or dislike in next furture.
David, Hangzhou,
In pro-chinese propaganda they don't mention that first it was a peaceful demonstration that had been cracked down by police.
Then, several sources claim that the riots were beginned by chinese provocators working in police(http://www.epochtimes.com/gb/8/3/21/n2053838.htm - chinece version only). In a few words, people saw in police station that some of arrested rioters were freed and changed their wear to police form.
And third(of cource I can't prove it here), my friend who married tibetan man said that in Lhasa 14-16 March police were arresting tibetans without exception. Then, in the night, much of them were set to trucks(60 people in each), taken out of city and shot to death. Bodies were put then to communal graves.
In the villages, they claim, people get shot without any arrests and courts. China promised to make a "total cleaning" after the Olympics and it doesn't seem like joke.
Sergey, Kiev, Ukraine
The site is available to access from Mainland China.
I see people talking about human rights for Tibetan people all over the places, but what about the rights of the innocent Han Chinese being attacked? Just because the Tibetans want more autonomy does not justify the attack of innocent civilians. In case you have not noticed, the Tibetans started the whole riot by attacking civilians, should the government sit back and wait for a dialogue while lives are threatened by rioters? The government is not stupid, they know what image their response would portray to the world, unless they have to, they would not do anything out of bound.
Rosie, Hong Kong,
lol FRANK FROM CHINA..
I thought Dalai Lama has always upset Chinese as per PRC`s report. So this is nothing new. And Chinese are raging? haha.. they need to show the rage directed to the same govt..which instigated this riot. A peaceful protest turned riot is the result of China`s strategic and premeditated plan to denounce Dalai Lama. China says they have evidence and everything to prove that this is organized and premeditated crime...if that is the truth..why didn' t they stop before it happened unless they themselves are the one who started the riot by sending Chinese policeman dressed as tibetans to start the violent riot.

I have worked with the Dalai Lama in the US when he does his teachings here. He is an amazing non-violent person whose very presence exudes peace and love. It is totally ridiculous to think that he is masterminding these protests and their violence. He has always been for a "Middle Way" and a resolution with China, not a revolution. This amazing spiritual leader and his Tibetan people will go down in history as the victim of this brutality from China and the Chinese government will hopefully be seen as the bullies they are as they continue to perpetrate cultural genocide against one of the world's most peace-loving and spiritual cultures.

To Cliff Clifford. Don't worry, this website is available to all Chinese whose computers connected with Internet. And we can see how "FAIR" and hypocritical you are through this website.

now , Dalai Lama has offended all chinese ,his goal for Tobet's independence will be go away far and far .
FRANK, shanghai,
Dalai Lama made a great mistake to lead Tibetan to defy chinses goverment .he should known the sinifigance of 2008 to chinese people .the riots have a only result :Tibet will never be independent .chinese are raging now.
FRANK, shanghai,
The Chinese will soon have their hands full with their own internal rebellion. As the information age gradually permeates their own under served and destitute interior provinces the disparity in wealth will provoke increasing unrest. Hopefully, they will be so distracted bu their own internal troubles that they will leave their plans to destroy Tibetan culture on the back burner until they collapse under the oppressive weight of their own regime.

Human rights? It's so funny to hear the West complain about China's "human rights record".
The "record" that's kept by the West on every non-white country on earth. Now what about your own record?
How many muslims have died directly and indirectly in the hands of the US/UK coalition so far this century? 1 million? 2 million?
Back to the last century, how many people had died in the hands of the ""liberal democracies" all over the world? Have you lost count?
Body count wise, China is a much more responsible global citizen than the Western democrazies, I'm afraid.
As for Tibet, Colonel Francis Younghusband has more dead Tibetans on his hands than the Chinese authority can ever dream of.
And cultural genocide? I wonder how are all the American Indians, Australian Aboriginese and Nerw Zealand Maoris faring today.
Still care to compare "human rights record"?
Marcus, Sydney, Australia
"I'm impressed by the number of Chinese contributors to these comments. Is this site available to everyone in China I wonder? Or just those people who will say the right thing?"
Your post just showed that you easily fall for what the Western press says about China and Chinese. Even in the press, it's only used to words "severely restricted" regarding Time On-Line. Incidentally, did you ask yourself what did they mean "severely restricted" and how did they measure what's "severely restricted"? Did the Chinese only block certain articles?
You'll be surprised to find how much China has changed in the past 25 years. (I did when I visited China for the 1st after 12 years in 2001!) My old parents used to not dare say a bad word about the government behind locked doors at home, and now they complained to me over the phone.
For misleading media coverage, on this site you'll

Jerry Yang, NYC, NY, USA
I have lived in Chengdu, China and had 6 girls of Tibetan origin living in the apartment upstairs. I fear for how the Chinese people will treat Tibetans in the future.
Scary is the way I view Chinese Education. The majority of 1.2. Chinese people belive what Beijing wants them to. For anyone Chinese posting here how can you say you know what is true about anything - your media is controlled by politicians - your education system is controlled by politicians - your internet access is screened by politicians. The politicians being your unelected party in Beijing.
Yes China has done o.k. recently but if you never have freedom on press, voting and education you will always be less informed.
That said I think the Tibetans are mistaken in rioting, the Chinese government will crack down and have no choice but to do so. Tibet will never be free, it is geographically part of China, it has no power and no 'real' allies. Lets hope the Chinese and Tibetan people can make peace.
Paul , Chiang Mai , Thailand
The Chinese government just do not like to unable to control. They force respect on people and therefore do not get much ( only through fear). If only they could adopt a more friendly attitude the worlds perception might be different. In my view they are just trying to keep the lid on the inevitable. They will probably keep Tibet in line for a while but as everyday passes and their population gets more money and independence just watch the upheaval it will cause sometime in the future. By slandering the Dalai Lhama just proves that they do not have a handle of what is really happening. As a Nation they are too aggressive, too unhappy, Gamble too much and have a long way to go on Human Rights. It can only implode.
billy, Bangkok, THailand
The Dalai Lama practices Hollywood diplomacy.
He has spent years living luxuriously on funds from the Indian Government and the international community.
No political strategist, but merely a publicity hungry celebrity, he is the darling of the tree hugging, cappuchino drinking class in the West. He is has allowed himself to become a passive political weapon of the Indians, who support him to embarrass their traditional enemies, the Chinese.
Now, the average Tibetan in the street suffers for the Dalai LamaÅ complaceny.
Alan Grenway, Birmingham,
Given the report in this very newspaper about access to western media sites on the subject of Tibet:

I'm impressed by the number of Chinese contributors to these comments. Is this site available to everyone in China I wonder? Or just those people who will say the right thing?
Cliff Clifford, Leeds,
because of there are no liberty to publish Dalai Lhama's works and the real biography here, and also state controlled academic dare not to tell the truth, many people just don't know the reality, but only second and third realities.
Daniel, Shanghai, China
Go Dalai Lama! He has the power to make change happen whether they like it or not. Power to the people.
Kelsey, Palm Harbor, FL
Have you ever been to Tibet? If not, how can you give any comments on it? It's ridiculous for you to say anything about China's internal affairs. What the government has done is to give Tibet a brighter future. However, What you've done? Nothing but to make trouble again and again. Stop saying anything subjective!!
Boreas, Tianjin, China
To those Chinese reading this message board:
While it is possible that "western bias" has distorted the Tibetan incident, it seems much more likely that the sensationalized reports are a product of your repressive, totalitarian government as a way of maintaining its influence against growing social consciousness in China.
Certainly, we in the West do not get the "entire story" and must evaluate the facts with our own preconceptions, but in this case it seems that the lady doth protest too much.
Stop trying to make the West out to be a unequivocal enemy and take your own advice and be "objective" in your analysis of your country's policy choices and how they relate to needless human suffering.
David, NY, NY
What did the International Olympic Committee think was going to happen... when you give the priviledge of hosting the Olympics to a COMMUNIST country such as China.
If it looks and sounds like a lion... it's a lion! A lion cannot change who he is anymore than China can change who they really are.
China is an oppressive, communistic country! And the IOC is ignorant for allowing China to host the games!
mike, Orange County, CA
Nice to see the PR tentacle of the Chinese government have been busy again masquerading as all and sundry in the comments section of various western press publications. If it is all about nasty Tibetans targeting ethnic Hans, and the terrorist actions of an exiled leader who has hitherto preached peace to the world then the simple solution for the Chinese government is to let the international media in. That should clear things up quickly. But I think we all know the chances of that happening.
Cliff Clifford, Leeds,
The US has its faults, but God help us when China becomes the world superpower.
tim, london,
Conan, based on how your government censors everything, controls the media, and executes dissidents, I'm going to guess that many foreigners know more about the true nature of the Chinesses Government then many people in China.
Sam, Baton Rouge, LA
because it is so a complicated situation that many chinese just keep in silence. a government full of those without spirit are blind to the spiritual.
Daniel, Shanghai, China
It was the west who designed the term "terrorist" so it was only to be used by independence movements and non state armed forces and not directed to states in the killing of civilians. How often have you heard of Hiroshima being called a terrorist attack? That was an attack on civilians by an invading force? Wheras an attack against American TROOPS in Iraq (which they invaded) would lead them being braned as terrorists. China may be in the wrong but it is usuing EXACTLY the same methods as the west uses to maintain power.
Raymond, the norf, UK
After Tibet riot happened several days ago, those rioters were called terrorists on internet by Chinese people, because they committed crime, looted and burned shops and vehicles, killed innocent Han Chinese. And they also prepare to kill athletes during Beijing Olympic Games, so they are absolutely terrorists. And Tibetan Dalai lama are their spiritual leader.
Welch, Chongqing, China
I feel funny about what u said above. As a chinese man, I think u foreigners do know nothing about China. If u try to judge something, please check it and think about it, never make rumour.
conan, nanjing, China
I'm a Chinese living in the US for the last 14 years. I am being in Tianmen square in 1989 and witnessed many unpopular move by the Chinese government. I appreciate the different perspective that western media lend me in those times. But this time most western portrait of this event is wrong, very biased!! At least from all the information I have gethered through internet, the event in Tibet was no peaceful protest, it is a riot against non Tibetans to say the least, or premeditated, well organized ethnic cleansing against ethnic Chinese and Muslim. The Chinese govenment was slow to respond to the riot which high lighted the inherent problem with its highly centralized political structure, but it was right to forcefully restore civil peace.
As to Dali Lamar, though I have been long time admirer of his teaching and philosophy, this event in Tibet and his response total broke my trust in him. What would Gandi have done?
alison, Phoenix, AZ
Because the US and the UK pressed India to do so in 1950's...
To be fair, there are more than 5 million Tibetan Chinese in China and only hundreds participated in the riots...statistically that is less than 0.01% of the Tibetan population...
Historically, China has been a nation with different Ethnical groups...all the cultures melt together and form the modern Chinese culture( like the Chinese lady's dress actually originated from the ethnic group of Manchus), Chinese also have positive policies towards minorities , such as no one-child policy for ethnical minorities( to encourage their population growth), lower score for ethnical Chinese to go to University etc...it is a shame a small percentage of Tibetans wanted to destroy the harmony and peaceful life of Chinese people, and provoke hatred among different ethnic groups in China.
Lucia Lee, London/Hong Kong,
China accuses the Dalai Lama of being a terrorist. As a Tibetan I have only the Dalai Lama tell us not only to have compassion to other humans but also to animals.
Maybe China should post a $100 MM reward for any teaching where the Dalai Lama instigated violence?
China is trying to prop up their regime by playing up nationalism. If Chinese people get fooled they will be the biggest losers.
Tsenam, New York City,
If all this killing, burning, and rioting had occured in any western country by any ethnic group, you can bet your bottom dollar that those prople and their leaders will be branded terrorists. In fact, since a particular ethnic group, the Han Chinese, is targeted, it can also be called hate crime. In my mind as a buddhist, there is absolutely no justification to kill, period.
Cliff, Toronto, Ont, Canada
Well of course he's a terrorist! Trust the commies to come up with a yawning platitude. All messages of freedom are terror to totalitarian regimes.
Eugene, heidelberg, germany
I totally agree with Isabel, when your westerns said Chinese people be brainwashed, why no think maybe you was brainwashed by western media which full of prejudice and even fake photos!
Just be objective!

"when I go to the store I check the label. if it says made in china I won't buy it. of all the people to accuse of terrorism, the Dalai Lama."
Oh, did you forget to check the PC you were using to post to this forum? You need to take it apart and I am sure you'll find something made in China, and don't forget to check your DSL/cable/wireless modem too! I am sure it's made in China.
Dalai Lama is treated like a living god in the West, but the Islam Alah is a terrorist. How funny! (Why is it so indignant of you to think the Chinese would not think Dalai Lama is a terrorist, some of his followers killed innocent Chinese people in the riot while chanting his name!)
Again and again postings like these show how narrow-minded and biased some of the Westerners are, always so self-righteous and always trying to claim moral high ground.
Has the West freed itself of all the injustices it has inflicted on many of the world in past 200-300 years? If not, then set an example first!

That the Chinese authorities could actually think that the world community would believe their ridiculous assertions that a peaceful man like the Dalai Lama was a terrorist is, almost, unfathomable.
I expect to watch little, if any, of the Beijing Olympics and I don't ever expect to visit the country. Mind you, I had determined that many years ago.

Why india is harboring a terrorist since 1950 ? No action from China side ?

What will happen between now and the Olympics will be a shoot down of domestic protesters Just like in 1989 in Beijing, in Mexico City in 1968, in Saint Petersberg in 1905 (non-Olympic related). It will be interesting to see how the world will react.

Though I have long been a dedicated and knowledgeable practitioner of Buddhism and lived in Aisa for over twenty years, I have long felt that the activities of all Buddhist teachers and practitioners in Asia have been corrupted by cultural considerations.
Sadly and perhaps surpingly to some, this feeling of doubt extends to the Dalai Lama also. I certainly do not think that he is a terrorist but I do not think that he is not the shining example of Buddhism and Buddhist teachings that many westerners, especially fellow Americans seem to think of him as being.
In looking for a hero as we Americans frequently seem to want or need to do overlook other things that may be troubling regarding Tibet, its history and the overall practice of Buddhism in Asia.
Jennifer Franklin, Bangkok, Thailand
The Chinese Gov., is horrible. I have been their 3 times in the last 5 years. There is only the very rich and the very poor. The poor families put there little babies on the street corners with a cup for spare change. Some families break the bones of the small children and then let them beg on the streets with their deformed bodies. Its a sick culture

German provided major support behind Tibet riot. The reason was that German losed the contract to build the high speed railway between Beijing and Shanghai last year. Japan won the contract last year. You can see Japan is very quiet so far. German also accused China stealing high speed railway technology from German. The German are using Dalai Lama to retaliate China for their business loss. Right before March 8 German had 3000 towns held supporting activities for Dalai Lama. China will boycott German made cars in China. UK should keep themselves away from German, next Olympic games will be in London.
Chirs, NY, USA
you already did something elly... we must boycott chinese stuff, it has lead, etc. in it anyway. when I go to the store I check the label. if it says made in china I won't buy it. of all the people to accuse of terrorism, the Dalai Lama. the chinese people will get these communist parasites off their backs soon , they are not stupid...

This is the man who have won the Nobel peace prize and advocates what is probably one of the most peacefull, inclusive religions in the history of man. The Chinese are getting very desperate...
Ken, London, UK
How can you label person as a terrorist because you think he is trying to disrupt the Olympic but in fact he has been stressing for the last few months that the world should not boycott the Olympic because he thinks it may bring some sense to your stubborn thinking. May I add that he has been patiently waiting for your respose on on his willingness for a formal dialogue. Please do the world a favor and quit hitting around the bush.
Andrew, NY, USA
No Olympics. Free Tibet.
Ian, Edmonton, Canada
To Elly,
Yes. The Chinese media is controlled by their government. And No, Chinese people are not brainwashed. There's the internet where many seek different perspective on political issues with an objective standpoint, and from that, derive to their own opinions. In a nutshell, Chinese people still have opinions.
Is Dalai Lama a terrorist? I think the use of the label 'terrorist' is subjective! In this case however, if Dalai Lama is in fact behind the organization of those riots, surely to the Chinese government, he is a terrorist! Also, you have to bare in mind that the timing of the riots is pretty sensitive...with the Olympics on its way.
Isabel, Surrey, UK
It is so easy for a government to accuse ANYONE as terrorist. Every country play the same trick, I mean every country does the same.
Be honest, you can elect not to buy products that are made in china (can you?), donât watch Olympic game this year, but you cannot tell people not to buy and to boycott the Olympic game. You hear a Director and actor tell on the media to boycott the game. Why I never hear them say âI am not gonna let my movie go to Chinaâ. Say something more responsible â¦
Joe, NY, NY
Why would China do such a thing.
Crystal, new York City, USA
The 'terrorist' here is the Chinese Government. The Dalai Lama has never asked for Tibetan independence, only the recognition and liberty of the Tibetan culture and the freedom to practice Buddism! Does China believe its own propoganda or think the rest of the world will? Absolutely abhorent behavior...
Julie, Austin, TX
Does that imply that India is harboring a terrorist? Thats an insult.
Nadeem, Irving, Texas
This made me laugh why shouldn't China accuse people of terrorism? Its the fashionable thing to do. Anyone who doesn't agree with a point of view of a government is a "terrorist".
John, London, UK
I think that is the saddest thing I have heard all year. China must be out of its collective mind. I will not buy any more Chinese products until China is out of Tibet.
Heather, Brooklyn, NY
yeah right china,, the Dalai Lama is a terriost now I've heard everything, excuse me, who's the terrorist?? ?what else will they think off? god we haven't done any killing, or brutally beat anyone. we believe in human rights, how can anyone say things against china, we brain wash our people, we tell them when they can speak, we tell them what we want them to know, we are such a loving country, will china if you loose this one I certanily hope so, we are just watching and listening to all the lies your throwing out,,boycott the games, stay out of china, quit buying junk off them, free trade in china i don't think so.god bless the tibetan people ,, wish i could do something.
