Muslim separatists demanding independence for China’s westernmost region have massed in a southern Silk Road oasis to protest against Beijing rule, stirred up by recent riots in Tibet.
Officials in Khotan said that about 100 people had been detained after several hundred members of the Uighur Muslim minority staged a demonstration in a marketplace in the city on March 23. The local government gave no reason why the unrest had not been revealed for so many days, but it is not unusual for the Chinese authorities to try to prevent news of disruptions entering the public domain.
Muslim extremists trying to start a rebellion were to blame, the authorities said. “A small number of elements tried to incite splittism, create disturbances . . . and even trick the masses into an uprising.” There are 8 million Uighur Muslims among a population of 19 million in Xinjiang province. The latest sign of pro-independence unrest among ethnic minorities in China comes only weeks after Beijing revealed that it was facing a serious threat to the Olympics from terrorists among the Uighurs.
Radio Free Asia, funded by the US Government, said that several hundred Uighurs had staged a demonstration in Khotan to protest against limits on the wearing of headscarves by local women and demanding the release of political prisoners and an end to the torture of Uighurs. Fu Chao, an official with the Hotan Regional Administrative Office, said that the protest involved people who wanted to establish an Islamic nation and to separate Xinjiang from China. He said that the Government discouraged Uighur women from wearing scarves while they worked because it was inconvenient, but that the practice was accepted otherwise.
Mr Fu said that the demonstration had been incited apparently by unrest in Tibet, where anti-Chinese rioters rampaged through the capital, Lhasa, on March 14, leaving at least 18 people dead. Sources in Lhasa said yesterday that the Government had issued 11 most-wanted lists, broadcasting photographs on state television, for 69 people.
The Khotan government said that the Uighurs involved in demonstrations adhered to the “three evil forces”, a Chinese expression that refers to separatism, religious extremism and terrorism. “Our police immediately intervened to prevent this and are dealing with it in accordance with the law,” it said. Another local official said that several of those taken into custody had been released after being “educated”.

Lim Johor Bahru Malaysia,
Perhaps you should consider emigrating to China given that Tibet and The UIghurs are tearing it apart. Its funny the flag of PRC resembles a huge Chinese new year Ang Pow packet. Or are you conveniently working in Singapore, patiently waiting for a Singapore passport?

You are a sour grape. No one has ever claimed China is perfect and you do not have to be so sarcastic. As all human beings are sinners, no nation is perfect. Only God almighty is perfect.
We are only responding to your biased, inaccurate and often malicious attacks. Some of your western medias have already been exposed as having made bias and wrongful presentations to mislead viewers over the Tibetan unrest. Shameful is it not?
The truth hurts you does it not?.
If you are thinking of emigrating to China, forget it. They do not want a sour grape. They already have enough people.
Sorry I also do not know which other country is good for you. Why, are you saying you are not happy with your home country?
Good day, Philip have a jolly good time..
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
I`m emigrating to China, its sounds so good, free health care, free speech, uncensored press, equality for all, freedom of movement, no human rights abuses, no political prisoners, a peaceful and harmonised society, it sounds too good to be true ..................

I'd fully support it.
Unlike Tibet, the Scots will get a vote on it.
Please do keep up.....
Phil, Preston,

"Government discouraged Uighur women from wearing scarves while they worked because it was inconvenient, but that the practice was accepted otherwise. "
Did you read this, and then open your mouth !
BTW,The "Eastern Turkistan" organization has long been reconized by UN as one the terrorist organizations, which have close relations with Al Qaed (Bin Laden). Be careful ! This is not a good excuse to attack China.

You are probably a western expat working in Singapore.
The Chinese did not fight for themselves. They fought for China and if they have to again, they will fight for China.
All Governments are only temporary but China is forever. It does not matter if the Government is communist or otherwise. So long as it brings progress and development to improve its peoples lives, it is a good government. Late Leader Deng had said "It does not matter whether the cat is black or white, so long as it catches the mice, it is a good cat."
Is China not rising? The Chinese are now proud and stands out in the world. The West can critize their own governments it is their style but must the Chinese follow the West? That is what you want to preach, is it not?. No.Chinese are different. They stand by China. Without China there will be no Chinese. Get it.

China has opened its doors very wide. It had built a new rail to allow visitors to travel easily and comfortably around to Tibet. Maybe it was not a good idea after all because this allows saboteurs easy access into the country to cause trouble like inciting Tibetans to rebel.
The questions you asked show you really are biased or prejudiced. Do not only see Western media, go also to China's media. Their TV coverage will answer your questions.
If not, wait for China to allow foreign visitors into Tibet again. Make a trip there and see for yourself. Then and only then can you satisfy your quests to seek the truth. Believe you not what the West nor what I say.

If one has not been to Tibet, one would not know. It would be better if one had stayed in Tibet for a period of time to know even better. You posted essentially 2 Qs.
The 2 lac Tibetans in the various countries is not a present cause. A large number of Tibetans followed the Dalai Lama when he exited Tibet in 1950. What about population growth since then. Alarming. No. They are still staying as exiles because the Dalai Lama preferred to listen to Western influence rather than negotiating with China.
You did not state the frequency or number of Tibetans still coming out of Tibet. It is not surprising if there are still people who wants to venture to "greener" pastures. That is the human spirit is it not? Don't Indians moved out of India otherwise we would not have a large Indian community in Britain. Just do not always think negatively of China. Did you try to find out whether there are many happy Tibetans still in Tibet.
Peace to you brother.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
It is an uphill battle to convince ordinary Chinese that their government is oppressing the natives in Tibet and Xinjiang. Westerners need to realise that Chinese are not as individualistic, and do not criticise their own government as much as the West. Chinese tend to put the state before self. So even though Westerners are only criticising the Chinese government, the Chinese people tend to take it personally as an attack on themselves as well, and will rally and close ranks with their government. Remember the Germans supporting Hitler during WWII?
Ernest, Changi, Singapore
Do mess up the issues of Xinjiang and Tibet. These are completely different. If the Chinese are ruling Tibet for their good, then why more than 2 lac Tibetans are living as refugees in the various countries, mostly in India ???? Why still Tibetans cross the dangerous Himalayas on foot, risking their lives and enter India, Nepal and Bhutan for shelter ???? What is the reason that makes them to leave their home, land and everything and move to other countries though China is developing fast ???? Have anybody tried to find the reasons behind this ???
To Johnson, London, UK
It's fine to say that their standard of living has improved. But iis it OK if you are forcibly asked to educate in French though u wish to have it English ??? Is it right that the government should decide that what and how u should worship ????

If someone support Scotland to seperate from UK, what will you do?

Some foreign media fabricated lots of reports on severe riots that took place in early March in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Netizens on domestic websites also strongly chided the distorted reports. Traffic of the website of www.anti-cnn.com exceeded 200,000 five days after it was set up, with more than 2,000 netizens providing various proof.
Sandra, Beijing,
Chinese living abroad are so angry to see full-pages coverage about Tibet riots with many fake pictures from Western newspapers. I am also furious.
The distorted reports triggered protests of netizens both at home and abroad. Netizens even established a website named anti-cnn.com that is aimed at opposing distorted reports from CNN, a well-known US news network.

Muslim women are banned from wearing headscarfs in France. point?
David, Weymouth, Dorset
Aejaz, the separatists in xinjiang call it "East Turkestan". The interesting thing about their lack of foreign support is how little they get from their fellow Muslims. Being muslim does not disqualify people from support from westerners. Think of the Kurds, or the Kosovars. Or even pro-Palestine campaigners in the West.
Tibet has a colourful and unique culture, which has attracted some celebrity interest, but not a great deal of substantive support. Xinjiang has a lower profile in the West than Tibet, for sure. But why shouldn't it be obscure? It's an underdeveloped area run by a government adept at controlling news. The west has no economic or historical interest there.
Muslims (in the West and elsewhere) at least have religious solidarity as a reason take an interest in Xinjiang, but very few do. I've heard it said that China's alliance with Pakistan helps to guarantee Pakistani acceptance of the status quo. Any other ideas?
Wensleydale, Leeds, Uk
The Tibet issue is being manipulated by the West to distabilize the fast emerging China. It's a smoke screen typical of U.S and British operations. History is full of examples.
Tony C., toronto, canada
There is one big difference between Tibet and sinkiang. Tibet cause is supported by big celebrety figures in west where as sinkiang struggle for independence is very conviniently labled as 'islamic terrorism'.
It is fashionable and civilised to support tibetan freedom but taboo to mention sinkiang.
if we are supporting freedom of small nations from big neighbours... let's not forget 'sinkiang'. i have even no idea what the people of sinkiang wish to call their mother land? xinjiang ? uighur? does it matter as long as they get their freedom !
aejaz, salford,
Last year, I am full of sympathy for Tibet monks. So I have been there this February , It is a nice place. Tibetians get a lot of temples and Han chinese help them to repaired old temples. They enjoy human rights and religional freedom. China government even changed some rules to attract people who live in other provinces to visit Tibet. No armies broke human rights. It is amazing, so I enjoyed 6 days.
What we read influences our thinking. So I believed China's human rights records become more and more worse. To be the truth , they did well. We should see the truth with our own eyes. If you do not trust what I said , go to China, seek for your answers.
By the way do not trust what CNN says, they always lie. They told us Iraq have nuclear weapon.
Johnson, London, UK
How many did they arrest..
How many did they beat..
How many did they shoot..
When will China open it's doors for the world to see..
Les, Los Angeles, USA,
In that you all seem to be parroting only what the official Chinese reports claim has happened, the substance of your report cannot possibly be believed. there is no disclaimer in your reporting that your information is being spoon fed to your agency. WF Posey.
William Posey, Pantelleria, Italy
WOW. if it was the us government, they would have allowed the attack to happen, and used it as an excuse to invade another muslim country for oil
David, Weymouth, Dorset
Muslims in Serbia want to detach a part of Serbia (Kosovo). Muslims in Russia want to detach parts of it (Abkhazia, Ossetia). Muslims in Lebanon have already made most cristians leave. Extremist muslims in Irak have just started. Muslims in India are a well known problem. Muslims in Africa are cleaning-up the Darfur after having pushed the christian Copts to Egypt and to south Sudan. Now they want a chunk of China... what else is new?
