A suspected Tamil Tiger suicide bomber struck the starting ceremony of a marathon in Sri Lanka yesterday, killing a government minister, a former Olympic runner and at least ten other people.
The bomber attacked as Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, the Highways Minister, was about to wave a flag to start the marathon in Weliweriya, 12 miles from Colombo, the capital.
“Ready, on your marks, steady . . .” Mr Fernandopulle, 55, said over a public address system just seconds before he was engulfed by a fireball. He was the second minister to die this year in attacks blamed on Tamil Tiger rebels who have been fighting for an independent homeland in Sri Lanka’s north and northeast since 1983.
The Government ended a six-year ceasefire with the Tigers in January and has since launched an offensive in their heartland, vowing to crush them by the end of the year. Most observers say that this is unlikely and the attack proved that the Tigers, who are listed as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union, can still strike at high-level targets deep within government-held territory.
Lakshman Hulugalle, a government spokesman, blamed the Tigers for the attack on Mr Fernandopulle, who was one of the most heavily guarded Cabinet members because of his outspoken criticism of the rebel group. Mr Fernandopulle, who was seen as a future Prime Minister, was a member of the negotiating team during failed peace talks with the Tigers in 2006.
The bombing killed 11 others, including K.A. Karunaratne, a former Sri Lankan Olympic marathon runner, and Lakshman de Alwis, a national athletics coach, and injured at least 100 others. Karunaratne competed in the 1992 Olympic marathon and the 1993 World Championships. He won gold in the marathon and 10,000m at the 1991 South Asian Games, defending his title in 1993. Yesterday’s race was part of festivities marking the Sinhalese new year. Local TV showed scores of terrified runners and onlookers fleeing along the street in Weliweriya after the blast, which left the area covered in blood and body parts.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Sri Lankan President, condemned the bombing as an act of savagery and cowardice. “This dastardly act will not weaken our resolve to eradicate terrorism from our midst and bring peace and democracy to our people,” he said.
Sri Lanka’s war is estimated to have killed more than 70,000 people, 5,000 of whom have lost their lives since the Norwegian-brokered truce began to unravel in late 2005.

To Sunil,
There are fundamental differences between Al-Queida and Tamils. Tamils wanted to live in thier homeland without fear of Sri Lankan forces. Al-Queida is another story everybody knows about it. Be neutral. Innocent Tamils life no less than any government minister who normally support the government action.
Dennis, London, UK
This is all due to the distrust between the Tamil rebels and SL government. Both accuse each other that they used the time of cease-fire to rebuild themselves and they did. It's only through negotiations that these two parties sit and have a solution. India and Norway tried to help but in vain ... India paid the price loosing a national leader and a thousand peace-keeping soldiers. Now, it is upto these two parties to think what they are going to inherit to their future generation. Whether hatred or peace and prosperity. AS PER MY VIEW, only autonomy to Tamil majority states within Sri Lanka (not MILITARY) can help ..... But, this too not going to help in the coming years due to great distrust between the two.
SUPPORT FOR PEACE and not HATRED ...

Look who's talking about "amicable solutions" for problems.
How did you deal with the Sikh uprising? You crushed their holiest of places, the Golden Temple with Tanks. How did you deal with other separatists movements (including Tamils in Tamil Nadu)? By sheer brute force which breaking the backs of such groups defying the might Indian Union. Yet for us you preach "peaceful political solutions". Hypocrisy? You bet. Whats good for you is not good for us. Oh and least we forget how in the 70s India created armed, trained & funded all the Tamil groups to fight the Sinhalese, including the LTTE. Then in 1987 when we were about to defeat the LTTE during the Vadarmachichi Operation, India made their famous rice and parippu air-drop saving the LTTE & bombing SL Army positions. You created and prolonged our conflict, dumping the Tamil nationalism issue which belongs in India, on us. Not to mention destroying Lanka as an economic rival so you could be number 1
Sunil, Kandy,
Anti-government Tamil politicians from the TNA and the UNP were gunned down on holy of holy occasion, Christmas Mass, Hindu New Year. We then have government investigation that last for months if not years and no word since. Whats there to cover up ? Who does it protect ??
The Sri Lankan government according to Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International is the perpetrator of state terrorism. Its ministers have been involved in abduction for money rackets and people smuggling of war criminals to places like the UK.
There is no sunday times coverage of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians getting abducted and butchered by night by presumably the Sri Lankan government forces!!
Alan Weiss, Toronto, , Canada
It is sad to note that even after so much blood shed the Srilankans and the Tamil Tigers haven't been able to come up with a amicable solution to their problems.
With the world facing crises such as power shortage, Fuel shortage, GLOBAL WARMING etc. It is high time that all the nations in the world unite so that they ensure Humanity live on.
All this hatred will only lead to more hatred. It is upto us to decide if we want to kill ourselves or if we want to die naturally.
Today's second largest nation was freed from the British in a non violent manner. So why not a small nation very close to this second largest nation be freed by non violence.
People need to think!

sunil:"The usual mantra coming out of Western hypocrites bathed in high amounts of anti-Sinhala racism is for us to "talk peace" whenever Sinhalese get killed, but when Tamils get killed.... "
The tamil tigers are blowing up civilians, not only that but they lie about it. There is no way that they can be trusted, so it makes them enslaved to the 'mantra' of violence.
Even if their cause is just there is no hope for them.
Greg Lorriman, Leatherhead, UK
Sri Lankana are urged by the ignorant and clueless Westerners qand other supposed do gooders to make peace with these terrorist murderers.
They equal LTTE terrorists with Tamils ( most of whom in fact do not support LTTE) due to false propaganda of Tigers. This equivalence of a race with a terrorist group responsible for all sorts of atrocities has a undertow of racism.
By urging peace before LTTE disarms they in fact ensure that LTTE's existence so that it can continue to murder and deny right of life , and human rights and democracy to all Sri Lankans.
I hope that next people call for peace they find out what the real implication of that call are .
some times peace at all cost is appeasement and that is no more of a blessing than war ( in fact it can be worse as in this case )
fernando, Colombo, Sri Lanka
Ironic that the West is screaming over Tibet coupled with the Olympics with the usual crocodile tears for "human rights"
The usual mantra coming out of Western hypocrites bathed in high amounts of anti-Sinhala racism is for us to "talk peace" whenever Sinhalese get killed, but when Tamils get killed the West tells us "to bring the perpetrators to justice".
Fernandopulle and Kadirgamar are Tamils, but have been branded "traitors"/"non-Tamils" because they love their country more than their race, so their deaths don't get a "bring the perpetrators to justice" from the West, since everyone knows who the perpetrators are and the West wants us to "talk peace" with them.
Imagine if Al-Queida killed any minister of some Western government, would you "talk peace" too?
Truth and reality is the Tamils and their terrorist wing is a tool the West uses to beat and control us with, along with "human rights", which we all also know the West only cares about when it servers their interests.
