Ten people were wounded when Chinese paramilitary police opened fire on a crowd of Tibetans protesting against limits on a prayer ceremony and demanding the return of the Dalai Lama, witnesses said.
The violence was in a remote town in western Sichuan province on Saturday, where monks at the Lingque temple had been joined by several hundred pilgrims for an annual ceremony, the Torgya, which is meant to exorcise evil elements from society.
One witness said that the police appeared to grow anxious about the size of the crowd in a region of China where there have been demonstrations since protesters stabbed and stoned ethnic Han Chinese in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, on March 14.
At about midday security forces ordered a halt to the ceremony but the demonstrators, including about 400 nomads, refused to leave. The crowd included monks, residents, students and even civil servants, who wore dust masks over their mouths as a rudimentary means to conceal their identity, one witness said.
The stand-off lasted for several hours. At one point the police opened fire to try to disperse the protesters and about ten people were wounded.
One resident told The Times: “The police opened fire. We could hear it. But I haven’t heard about any of the people throwing stones at the security forces.”
The US-sponsored Radio Free Asia reported that the wounded were taken into custody by the security forces. It quoted a witness as saying: “The monks called the head of Daofu county and warned that if those detained weren’t released all the monks would continue protesting, even if it meant they would be killed. So the county chief released those who were injured and detained.”
The Chinese authorities have been trying to end almost a month of protests and the depth of anti-Chinese sentiment among a Buddhist minority loyal to the exiled Dalai Lama. Last week in Donggu, which is also in the Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, paramilitary forces opened fire on protesters after a government official was seriously wounded. Eight people were killed, witnesses said.
In a statement from his home in exile in Dharamsala, India, the Dalai Lama said that the demonstrations were “outbursts of long pent-up physical and mental anguish” that proved most Tibetans want freedom from Chinese rule. But he said that Tibetans should not try to disrupt the Olympics. “It will be futile and not helpful to anyone if we do something that will create hatred in the minds of the Chinese people,” he added.
The Communist party boss of Tibet said that the region was now stable but called for vigilance to prevent possible plots to sabotage the Olympic torch relay when it arrives in the Himalayan region.

You know what? When the terrorists attack again the West countries, they wont focus any more on Tibet or China. Because they have their own business to deal with. At least, western media wont be interested to what happen at Tibet.
Luis, paris, france
Why don't Chinese let Tibetans 'solve it'? It is their country and you have a very large area of China in which to practice your situation.
Ruth, Dublin, Ireland
'As the Tibetant rebellion, it is just some less people's mirage. We China can solve it. If we can't, is it called a county?'
The problem is the world knows how the Chinese state 'solves' it problems, that's why there is so much sympathy in the West for the Tibetan cause, we have seen the material destruction of a 1000 year old culture by the Chinese in the cultural revolution and the continuing heavy handed goverment today, we have seen the recent repression, we hear the shrill ludicrous properganda of the Chinese state and we recoil from it.
The demonstrations at the torch relay in London & Paris show the depth of feeling this issue has evoked here.
And yes we know that countries in the west have behaved badly in the past, many of us here where and still are against the American/British war in Iraq and have protested against it
We at least are free to protest without fear of arrest or worse.
Mike, Nottingham, UK
The thing i found it funny is... u ppl... are debating thngs happened in China, and are not listening to Chinese..... haha.....
Xenia, Hong Kong,
Thoes people who are always alleging Chinese policy, saying that China deprive citizens' rights, please calm down. Have you been to China? Do you understand the situation of China clearly? If not, please shut your mouth. We, Chinese people never allow others to destroy our country's Chinese solidarity. As the Tibetant rebellion, it is just some less people's mirage. We China can solve it. If we can't, is it called a county?
Melissa, Beijing, China

I dun reali get what u mean by.. China invading other countries? And I dun rememeber tibet as a country???? When its flag is GIVEN by a chinese emperor and its part of China since 13TH CENTURY.... u r like saying NY is not part of the states.
mike, Hong Kong,
Can I ask people to leave China, including Tibet, alone pls??
Like it or not, Tibet is part of China and Chinese people dislike any sort of seperationists. We would love a bit more human right but we don't want it to be forced upon us.
The reality is, anytime if a human right protest in China is supported/funded by foreign organisations, the protest always failed; when a protest is away from foreign supports/attention, it often suceeds.
So if you freedom-lovers really care about Chinese people, pls leave us alone.
tina, Dublin,
I would say that Minnie from Birmingham is even a greater philistine than Mao Tse Tung for believing that culture is worthless. Mao swept away thousands of years' culture with his personality cult which he labelled 'the Cultural Revolution, and some of this culture, buildings is now lost forever. These monks and temples are an integral part of Tibetan culture, and without these, there will be nothing left of Tibet save for the Himalayas.
Matt Johnson, Shanghai,
Democracy has many faults but it is still the best system of government. The freedoms it allows make it a beacon of human rights for the world. The recent events with Tibetans has brought to light the dirty underbelly of the Maoist inspired Chinese government. In this new age of communications and media throughout the world, governments like China's are exposed and cannot hide their abuses of human rights. The heavy-handed methods the Chinese government uses to beat dissenters into submission are no longer acceptable.

John,
American Indians have special rights and their own land which are called reservations in the US. The reservations also have special rights and can have Casinos that make them millions of dollars. They have special schlolarships just for having American Indian blood, no matter how little.
Americans are constantly being watched and scrutinized all over the world....get over yourself. This country is full of great people who have deep pockets and big hearts.

Freedom of China sound like new falling Berlin Wall. interesting...
Jim, Flushing,
I hope that Chinese people will see through the lies and get rid of their corrupt, dishonest, callous, greedy, violent and manipulative "Hu clique" before the games. Then all of China's people, including Tibet, Xinjiang, and even Taiwan, can celebrate the games in the spirit that ennobles them all. This social convention of kowtowing to the CPC is beginning to make me sick.
Rob, Vancouver, Canada
It's funny how white people want to Free Tibet. they should give their land back to the American Indians first, otherwise regardless of how sincere they may be, they're still just a bunch of hipocrites.
john, ny, ny
China is getting to be a superpower and it would be a good example of China to be a super one in democracy too, which China lacks badly...
ebrahim khodadoost, Ardebil, Iran
I think that most of you will agree with me that Chinese goverment is so greedy. They just want to invase other country to make them more power. Stop doing that! Leave Tibet people alone. Give them their homeland back! Has the chinese goverment think that what happend to them when other country claim their land as other country's property? Their people were killed because they don't accept the rule. Chinese people please stop saying that how well your current goverment treat tibet people. Taking people property is totally wrong and killing people will deserved the death sentence. Now look at the Chinese goverment, they take tibet property and recently they also claim two Vietnam island as their land. I am warning eastern asia country such as Vietnam watch out for China. Now they claim your two island as their land, if your goverment didn't take any action, your contry will become second Tibet.
Free Tibet, Free Tibet, Free Tibet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

True, human rights are not the best in China. However, we will need to really consider two key factors:
1. Are things getting better or worse?
To most Chinese people, they are getting much better. Both Chinese government and Chinese people are very frustrated at the fact that West does not recognize this progress. Encouragement rather than criticism will be more receptive and effective.
2. Is Tibet issue unique to Tibet or same for all other Chinese?
Joe's article explains this pretty well: http://blog.joegringo.com/2008/04/01/free-tibet-chinese-sayfree-china.aspx?referer=sphere_related_content?results=1#SurveyResultsChart
Jason, Atlanta, USA
As a Chinese, can I say something different here? Tibetans started violence first this time, they have to learn to get themselves under control. Otherwise they will continue to alienate themselves from non-Tibetans in China (the riot also hurt Chinese Muslims in Lhasa). Tibetans are not unique in Chinese eyes. Remember China has a history of converting its last emperor as an ordinary citizen, although the country has 2000 years of dynasty history. By the way the Dalai Lama was not democratically elected either.
China is controversial and will continue to be for a long time to come, no matter whether you don't care about it, hate it or love it! The world is not perfect and never going to be. Some people say they understand it, but they don't truly appreciate what that means.
Allan, Sydney,
I totally agree with Eugene, San Jose, CA, USA. Too much Chines tax payers' money has been spent on those temples and monks in Tibet. How on earth people in real life (any part of the world) have the luxtury to practise religions as a full time job to be paid by those who are not even believers. Money should be invested to support the real poor Chinese peole who are working hard to try for a living.
Minnie, Birmingham , UK
I seriously hope the Tibetan unrest will result in a paradigm shift in the leadership's thinking. I would agree that the propaganda onslaught, media blackouts and the labelling of His Holiness as 'Public Enemy #1' tarring him undeservingly with the same brush as Li Hongzhi (the leader of Falun Gong) - completely the wrong approach, IMHO. The right one must be to stop thinking that Mao is alive and the cold war is still continuing; believe that people, and people's lives, are worth something rather than by indoctrination and forcing denunciations. It's relatively easy to obtain acquiescence by force, but it takes a humanitarian approach to change hearts and minds.
lawrence, hong kong,
China is a dominant force. The leaders want only power They think , if they tell a lie, many times over, then eventualy people will believe them. Please , watch-listen-remember all the things the Chinese leaders do and say. The truth will come out. The Dalai Lama is trying to be civil with a Communist Dictatorship that does not understand that people deserve to live Free. May Peace return Tibet!
Jeff Edwards, Prior Lake , Minnesota, USA
China could save face and turn the whole thing around in one clever move, by inviting the Dalai Lama to the games, and have him speak on Chinese television about how Tibet is part of China, and how the two sides could work together for the much desired "Harmony" that China craves. But totalitarian dictatorships rarely care about such things, so we will continue to hear speeches right out of the cold war, about "wolves" and "running dogs". Forget Tibet, who will free China?
ingo baker, los angeles, california, usa
It is not fair to be so biased, of course we have heard bad things about China, them being communist.... we being democracy... we support freedom and they support ruthless dictatorship and what not. BUT LOOK AT OURSELVES, our mistakes that we have made in our own history, we have to look from China's perspective of things. With the Olympics coming up, China is in a very tense situation right now, they can't have riots going on in another province while they host the Olympics, and I have to admit, this riot came at a rather opportune time, too much of a coincidence if you ask me. also violence is going on at both ways, not just chinese police beating the citizens, but citizens are beating other citizens, and violence must be stopped, and apparently, Chinese government has realized that negotiating is really not an option for them. I really doubt the chinese governments wakes up every morning counting how many Tibetans they killed today..(running our of space, i will continue on)
billy, calgary, canada
BOYCOTTING chinese goods? wow, unless you want to pay 3 times the price for everything for 30 days, I'm in
and i wouldn't call burning people alive as "peaceful"
thing is, we're all the same, greedy, selfish and constantly wanting more. if you were the chairman of china, you would've done the same
John, calgary,
The wild dragon is devouring more and more innocent blood in Shangri-La while the indifferent world fattens the animal with dollars, pounds and euros by importing spurious goods churned out by it. Will the nations having conscience please wake up and take action.
NK Pant, Dehhra Dun, India
I have read more articles about this issue.
I think that the Chinese people should start listening to the Tibetians before they ruin the games and not assault people for speaking against them. They should give a good reason why they should be tortured and oppressed and "'cuz we need some new territory and we need some people to torture" is not an answer. I beleive that the there should be peace. I think that the Chinese people can conquer the Tibetians to protect them and still allow them to do what they used to do before they were conquered. That is a good reason.
I think that the protestors should protest in peace and the Chinese should listen and reason out and give 'em a good reason to be conquered after all, they are smart people.
Beau, Fresno, California, U.S.A
China's human rights abuses are "staggering": the detention of hundreds of thousands of people, including political activists, for "reeducation" programs, and forced labor camps; and the liberal use of the death penalty in China -- including for political prisoners -- which makes China the site of 8 of every 10 government administered executions carried out in the world!
It is clear that the Communists can't be trusted at all and they have a bag full of tricks to fool not only Tibetans but the people of China with a state-controlled press. The solution is a free Tibet. There is no doubt that a sovereign Tibet would be a savior state not only for Tibetans but for all ethnic groups of China who have nowhere to go if they disagree with the CPC. A free Tibet would be such a free democratic heaven and haven.
Rick, NY, US
continueing from the previous post ( i apologize if its out of order)
so Tibet is getting in the way of China having a successful Olympic game right now, something has to be done to stop them. this is what China is think/doing right this moment.
and thats my view of the things right now
billy, calgary,
If everyone STOPS their consumption of Chinese products for 30 days - the people of Tibet will be free. Imagine if all people simply do not buy "Made in China" for only 1 month.... this is the only message China will understand. What is more important - your cheap products or the religious freedom of Tibet? It's time to stop talking and start action.
MikeO, Austin, Texas
This is really ridiculous for the west. These people are another version of terrorists. The bottom line is that the Chinese would not sacrifice their national interest for the Olympic.
John, Texas, America
China has made repression and brutality their business for too long. If China doesn't talk with the Dalai Lama I fear violence will continue on both sides. His Holiness has been consistently peace-loving, supportive of the Olympic Games going ahead this year and does not demand independence for his country. Don't boycott the games, use them as we did in London today!
Freedom for all the peoples of China!
Jamie, Edinburgh, UK
To those who knows at least something about Buddhism and it major idea of nonviolence and acceptance of suffering in this life, became obvious that so call "spontaneous" demonstrations and riots against Olympics were carefully orchestrated by those who afraid or jealous of rising China and it influence in the world. Those who knows something about the history of Olympics should know that in ancient Greece even military actions where postpone during the games. The majority of comments here are just full of the bad informed or manipulated logic from the time of the cold war.
At the time when each day Iraqi people losing up to 50 people per day, 4 millions displaced and 2 millions of orphan children you are crying about
some hudlans who burned alive innocent chinese girls and now made ridiculous scenes around the world around Olympic torch. They are not buddhists they just paid agents of former colonial powers who want return of the past!
Adik, Allamuchy, USA
As one person has stated already to the global press, about the Olympic Games and of reason why it was created: To those who would argue that politics has no place in the Olympics, they need only look back at a reason that the Olympics were created in 1896, which was to âto show a common purpose of humanity. You canât say that the Olympics are not political, when they were created for a political purpose.â
The proud peoples of Tibet, the nuns, monks have every reason to be alarmed, voice their opposition against these Chinese Communists domination extinguishing free speech, religion, everyday lives. The harsh, inhumane torture, harvesting of organs and tissues, surgeries, and the Communist Chinese 'banking on their victims very organs' shows how low they are on the scale of 'human rights'. They are a leadership without conscience. Those who support such atrocities names, persons will be marked for history as enablers of the most evil form of leadership and government on the globe.
Tatiana A Kostanian, San Francisco, San Francisco/CA
The world community should out right boycott the china olympics for thier killing of innocent civilians and there true showing of violations of human rights,if they dont then the world approves of thier brutality
Mike, pensacola, fl
Please report the Dalai Lama's words. The full statement he made recently, if possible. People world wide need to hear this message of non-violence and will view your site if you continue to cover the Dalai Lama's own words..
Lesley Grant, San Anselmo, USA
Chinese government needs to review their Tibetan policies after all the mess surronding the Olympics are over. It does not make sense to pay people to become monks and financially support the monks while their loyalty aligns with the Tibetans-in-exile, who are ex slave onwers and their off springs. These Tibetans-in-exile have been bitter for 50 years since their slave ownerhip was destroyed by Communists, and are now utilizing the Olympics to cause trouble in Tibetan regions.
Eugene, San Jose, CA, USA
China is not free either!
xao, singapore, malasia
Chinese (as a political/Military force) out of Tibet. Give the proud people of Tibet the ability to enjoy a life they previously lived in the comfort of the Dali Lama. These peoples are mostly peace loving by religion and culture, and deserve the lives they chose to live.
Derek Arnoldi, Victoria,
