A Tibetan singer well known as a feminist activist has been taken by Chinese authorities and her family has received no word of her fate.
Jamyang Kyi was detained on April 1, friends said. The US government-supporting Radio Free Asia quoted unidentified sources as saying that she had been formally arrested in the western city of Xining. However police made no comment.
Kyi, a longtime producer in the Tibetan-language section of Qinghai Television, the state-run channel for western Qinghai province bordering Tibet, has not been seen since April 7. That was when her husband was last allowed contact with her, friends said.
Laomao Jia, who also works at Qinghai Television, said that he did not know who had taken his wife into custody. He told the Associated Press: “Everything is a mess right now.”
Beijing maintains strict controls over culture and education among Tibetans, and authorities could be investigating any contact Kyi had while overseas with members of the exiled Tibetan community — especially those linked to the Dalai Lama.
There was no word as to whether the singer had been linked to anti-Chinese protests in Tibet and neighbouring regions with large ethnic Tibetan populations since monks first staged a demonstration on March 10 in the capital, Lhasa. The protests turned violent on March 14. The authorities in Lhasa have issued 25 wanted lists, taking the total number of those sought in connection with the riots to 169. More than 1,000 people have been detained in Lhasa, including more than 400 who have been formally arrested and charged.

Wow.. I see our chinese nationalist friends are out in force. and, not surprisingly enough, the common response is, "oh i'm sure she deserved it". Indeed, let's all hold hands and sing the cheers of an overbearing government. By the way, isn't this site blocked in China? Careful, don't get in trouble. ;P
Bruno, NYC,
China is governed by a fascist dictatorship. It has planted stoolies and apologists all around the world to defend its abuse of human rights. Some them can be found here.

Jim, my contention is that no one actually knows who has taken Ms Kyi. Even her husband did not know. Whatever the writer knows is from unidentified sources. How then can you arrive at her being kidnapped? Is this not jumping to conclusion?
When I said Ms Kyi must face the appropriate music I mean to say that if Ms.Kyi is convicted of being quilty to inciting or taken part in the violent unrest, then she must be dealt with and punished according to the laws of the country. Is there anything wrong with this?
Every country wants peace and order. Even the US. Do not tell me that if some one is guilty of a crime, justice should not be meted out?
I am not English. Hope you understand what I am trying to tell & explain. Thank you.

If the woman had anything to do with the riots (and connections with the exiled Dalai Lama government), then she definitely should be detained and questioned by the authorities. This is not barbaric, it's equivalent to the US Patriot Act.
Bo Yang, Vancouver, Canada
Lim says "she must face the appropriate music. Nothing wrong with that"; but no open society should condone kidnapping people by state sanction regardless of suspicions against them? This is barbaric, and the ways of a totalarian society.

Ms. Jane (China's most hated woman), can you please explain why you are hitting below the belt? Your opening line is the singer was taken by Chinese authorities when you had nothing concrete and your source of information were from what friends said,& unidentified sources. Furthermore, the husband did not know who had taken his wife into custody"
Anyway If Ms.Kyi was involved with anti-China protests and had connections with the violent unrest, yes, she must face the appropriate music. Nothing wrong with that.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Maybe she is innocent and maybe she is a suspect as one of the hundreds of riots.don't make it magnify and politicalize factitiously.
Jack , Beijing, China
What crime did she commit then Tony?
Russssch, Shenyang , China
every one is equal before the law no matter how famous he/she is.. pop music star (michael jackson) was arrested by US authority too. any body commits crime deserves a punishment!

You want to make a fuss over that? Don't use your imagination to make up news!!! Stick to the truth, if you don't know anything, don't talk nonsense!
