From civil servants to yak herders, barley farmers and street traders, the residents of the Tibetan capital and surrounding countryside are being subjected to a two-month re-education campaign to combat anti-Chinese sentiment.
Under the latest drive to instil a sense of patriotism — titled “Oppose splittism, protect stability, encourage development” — those involved in the anti-Chinese Lhasa riots of March 14 will be asked to denounce their actions and condemn others who took part.
China says that 22 people died when Tibetans rampaged through Lhasa, stabbing and stoning ethnic Han Chinese and burning shops and offices.
For thousands of monks across the restive Himalayan region and in adjacent provinces, such campaigns have become part of life in the monasteries.
Reminiscent in tone and rhetoric of the Cultural Revolution, patriotic lessons attack the “wrongs” of taking part in anti-Chinese protests or demonstrations in support of the Dalai Lama as China tries to persuade Tibetans to renounce their exiled spiritual leader.
Political education, an occasional if unwelcome interruption into monastic life, has become a daily ritual for monks such as Wangchuk — not his real name — who no longer have the freedom to watch the latest DVD, surf the internet or chat with friends on their mobile phones.
Wangchuk's monastery has been his home since he was a child. He gets up at dawn, offers holy water and lights a yak butter lamp to honour the Buddha protector of his temple and the Dalai Lama — in all his 14 reincarnations.
Under more peaceable circumstances Wangchuk's afternoon would have comprised an array of different activities, from saying prayers for the dead “to help their soul reach Heaven” to debates with his fellow monks or time spent with his teacher.
Now, the monasteries have been closed to the public and a very different study session forms part of his timetable: patriotic education:
“This is compulsory. There's no excuse for not attending — unless you're ill and then you have to have a note from doctor.”
The sessions used to be called for a week once every two or three months. They now take place almost daily. “We gather in the main hall and Communist Party officials deliver a speech telling us to be patriotic and they give each monk a paper to read.”
This session takes place in the morning; in the afternoon the monks are summoned to answer questions. “Usually it's pretty relaxed. If I can't remember my answers then I just repeat the same as the monk in front of me.
“Sometimes it turns more serious. That is when the police arrive. They stand beside each monk listening carefully to make sure each answer is correct. If the police come we have to lie. We have to say, ‘I love the Motherland. I don't love him'. They don't require you to explain who ‘him' is, because we all know.”
Beijing has blamed the recent violence on the Dalai Lama and his followers. “We learn from the patriotic education that many things are banned. For example, we can't have pictures of the Dalai Lama and we mustn't listen to what people outside China tell us.”
In the past few weeks groups of Tibetan monks have staged highly publicised protests, including hijacking official tours of the region put on for foreign journalists.
The latest re-education campaign, which will include films and television programmes, suggests that China fears the spread of the discontent.

Whether the Dalai Lama is right or wrong, his followers have no choice. The Tibetan monks only know one vow i.e." Never abandon his teachings and never turn their backs on him."
Thus for Tibet to move forward and progress, re education is very necessary to change this mindset. China is right.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Before leaving the world, Buddha said to his disciple and cousin Ananda: "betake yourselves to external refuge." In a way, to tell the Gelug monks not to worship Dalai Lama's pictures is to restore the historical spirit of Buddhism.
Pete, Philadlephia,
ONE CHINA principle: "THERE IS ONLY ONE CHINA ON EARTH WHICH CONSISTS OF TIBET, TAIWAN, PRC [if not vanish like USSR] & OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS."
PRC represents CCP only instead of the entire China. i.e. PRC is not equal to China. It is only a major & important part of China, that's all!!!
Ken, Taipei, Taiwan
John from Wales:
This doesn't explain why Chinese who have been brought up or work/educated abroad, who have exposure to both Chinese and Western media, in majority, also agree with each other.
Pls remember that we have brains too. This is called "difference in opinion"
Jade, London,
Of course the posters from China all agree with eachother. the Media in China is state controlled & is subject to rigorous censorship & propaganda is rife. Across China & Tibet it is taught by the Chinese that Tibet has always been an integral part of China.
Hedd Wyn John, Penybont, Cymru (Wales)
Is there anyone who really read through all the comments wrote by the netizens all over the world?
The biggest problem we have is the lack of understanding,it is meaningless just type a few words about your own view but get nothing back,do not say anything if you know little about this country.
Jack, Chongqing, China
China is waging a 2nd Cultural Revolution in Tibet. Not only monks but even lay Tibetans, including ethnic Tibetans in the govt, are required to denounce the Dalai Lama & say they love China, even if they don't want to.
Wangchuk, New York, USA
1 Sounds like brainwashing to me,political reorientation blah.
2 What about Taiwan ? Sounds the same doesent it,
Think about it
Dave R, Durban, S.A.
I am laughing, but perhaps I will be crying... These Chinese 'patriots' have the same kind of mind as those they oppose the most - the Japanese nationalists!

Hi Brijit,
If you truly believe in what you have said, I suggest you find out what happened to New Caledonia when they tried to gain independence.
casey, singapore,
Does no one realise that 'real' Tibettans are a diverse bunch of people not represented by one 'religious' leader? Many support the CCP whole heartedly: either for setting them free from serfdom 50yrs ago, or now because of increasing alleviation from poverty via development of schools, roads, etc.
Rob, Swansea, UK
we should probably discount (or moderate) the views of the wus and the hoos who have been educated by the chinese government.
re-education is unlikely to work. rather, it will simply cause resentment.
whether this can be seen as an "internal" chinese affair depends very much on how one defines china. clearly, if you see this as an invasion of a separate nation, your views will be coloured accordingly.
of course, china is more than happy to give support to despicable regimes in sudan and zimbabwe without getting too concerned by their internal affairs. all well and good, except that even providing such support without question and with condition (unlike western governments) is itself a kind of interference. and all the worse because it is based purely on self-interest and closing your eyes.
my view is that there is no such thing as internal affairs. there is only freedom and oppression and we sh9ould fight for all and not limit rights according to accidents of birth.
jem, london, uk
Thanks for your article. World needs to be informed of what is going on behind the iron curtain. If China is SO GREAT as many of the Chinese agents, who uses western sounding names like Andy and Tony etc. write, then OPEN UP Tibet to the world media. Truth is a very powerful weapon.
Lobsang Yeshi, Falls Church, USA
When reading Chinese posters comments on this and other threads, it is clear that virtually all Chinese agree with each other.
This is highly disturbing as in other countries you get to read a spectrum of opinion. The problem begins in education where debating is not encouraged.
Stuart Griffin, Leeds, England
The comments from the Chinese are laughable seeing as the Chinese media is known to be all controlling and only select websites are approved.
I was told by a Chinese colleague that Tianamen Square was made up by the Americans using Jurassic Park technology to make the Chinese government look bad
Rachel Berry, hatfield,
Luo Sang Ren Qin, Cheng Du:
Whatever your true ancestry is, you are indeed the first correspondent in China calling oneself We Tibetans as well as we normal Chinese with a Romanized Hanyu Pinyin pseudonym and swearing to another commentary writer. Dont think many Tibetans are proud of you!
CCP would not welcome foreign visitors to Tibet without vetting. How can those in favour of the Dalai Lama travel to Tibet to find out what the locals want politically.
Our Hong Kong friend Henry: it is a fact that there are many ethic groups under the PRC regime. All the ethic groups might look similar to the Westerners if they were all compelled to dress up like Peoples Liberation Army and throw away their traditional costumes. If you look carefully at a Renminbi banknote, there are 5 languages printed on it besides English, depicting the 5 major ethic groups.
Gene Asia, Singapore,
It is the Chinese who should be "educated" on human rights, Tibetans right to run their own country etc. This won't be easy, we dealing with people whose primary concern is making money. Everything else is secondary, including God, if he exists.
Sacha. S, Paris,
China has existed for 5,000 years. The Chinese Communist Party has existed for 50 years. There is a difference here. No right-thinking person in the world hates China, but many have a problem with the antics of the Communist Party -- North Korea, Somalia & guns to Zimbabwe -- for heavens sake! Look around the world and wherever you can find a nasty little government you can be sure the CCCP is propping them up. 5000 years for that? Surely China deserves better of its leaders.
John, Shanghai,
To Nur from Urumuqi:
You should know that China is now a country open to the world. Why so many overseas Chinese demonstrate in whatever country they are staying now? You think they have never seen the world outside of China and do this because they are fooled by the Chinese government? Do you know how many Chinese back from overseas are supporting the government for this Tibet issue?
You think you are calling for justice, equality and democracy; but you are standing on a false ground that you yourself is not being just and fair at all! A fair and just people should do investigations for all aspects before opening his mouth.
Be aware that Chinese people is open - we know we have problems, human rights, environmental protection, lack of democracy ... we welcome your opinions which help us to improve; but NOT ANY ATTEMPT TO SPLIT CHINA, NEITHER TIBET NOR TAIWAN! NEVER!
Lin, Beijing, China
This is all very predictable. Sounds like the same old time worn method. The Chinese Communist Party are still on the same railway track they started off on over fifty years ago. There is nothing new here. Compulsory so called re-education has been going on in China ever since the regime came to power. The population must be so used to such stuff I guess it becomes just water off a ducks back. Tibet has far deeper and more meaningful values within it's own culture that the Communist Party with all it's banal and boring rhetoric are ever able to comprehend. Chinese Communism is intellectualy inferior to Tibetan Culture. That is a basic fact and they cannot do anything about it.
Colin, Carmarthen, UK
I guess the Tibetans and other minorities, as well as I am sure some Chinese, who are brutalised by the current, so-called 'communist regime' should just forget about the promise of freedom that wafts in on occasion, from the west. The western powers, the US and their industrial complexes want China's cheap labour and so will not do anything to upset the delicate balance that everyone has achieved while avowedly sounding right about their ideologies- communist or capitalist. So while the west will make the right noises about the Tibetans and the Dalai Lama and issue warnings and sound suitably stern, they will not encourage 'splittism' lest a furious China blocks the low cost goodies that helps their economies. So Tibetans, it is your choice what you want to do with your future. Depend on the west and you will find your freedom traded for a Mars bar!
Sachemetier, Hyderabad, India
I'm sorry, but Korea and India have done a much better job of that. More democracy, more rights, and less senseless killing. When it comes to setting an example, China is somewhere in the middle. Good job, but could be better.
John, Philadelphia, PA
this is what the chinese government has been doing to thier own people for years...lying about history and trying to get people to not listen to the truth about their past. they are making women sterilised in tibet which is genocide...william wu you are a sad attempt for a human being.
everyone should have the right to say what they believe, you chinese protest in western countries across the world but you cant do it in your own country..you say our media is biased but your own media is a total disgrace who lies and lies and lies still today and has done about your history since 1949.
i feel sorry for you to not be able provide an objective view on anything.
william gibbons, chengdu, china
why many Chinese backing gov'e views on Tibet despite the fact that there is obivious human rights abuse in China ?
if you read text book of pupils in China you can understand why
they grow up with teaching :
(1)Chinese comminist party forever right ,therefore the part must rule China untell end of the world
(2) Loving China imposible without showing loyality to party
(3)foreigners are evil ,they want destory China
So before speaking free Tibet one must speak Free Chinese
Chinese can't immediately accepet the reality that gose againist their believe However it will lead serious questioning of other matters that commist made people believe over half century .
Last i want say China wake up ! If you want earn respect from others ,first establish a governing system that guarantee the basic rights of your own citizen Like freedom of speach and media .The bigest potential and wealth of a countery is their fellow citizens. It is time to educate cmmunist not Tibets
Nur, Urumiqi , China
You Chinese- Despite being a big country with a large population- why are you so insecure that you go about capturing a peaceful, small and totally helpless country like Tibet and have the audacity to go about claiming it to be a part of your country. A day will come when all your plastic smiles will freeze and you will recieve the same treatment that you have metted out to these innocents. You cannot stop the thirst for freedom with such silly stunts and actions. The Tibetans are free people and they will never accept you at any cost.
Leena, Chennai, India
It' is "brainwashing". It's barbaric. It's against international law. It should be stopped. NOW.
Mao murdered millions in his obscene cultural revolution. Pol Pot similarly, slaughtered half a nation in the name of a corrupt idea.
China's rulers are trying to turn back a Chinese tide driven by a booming economy that, in the end, will win. Enlightened self interest /capitalism always does. And should.
Meantime, this murderous gang are yet again disgracing the
name of China.
How many more must die before these waxwork dummies learn that history will not be denied?
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
It's not because the government fears the spread of discontent, all we fear of is instability within the country, in turn it harms the economy. Whoever support the Dalai Lama is jealous of the fast and steady development of China's economy. Isn't it time for them to think how to compete with China economically instead of working out the silly political excuses to cause rage among Chinese?
Helen Ho, Beijing, China
To Paul, Hong Kong
Do you think Chinese people are fools or something? They don't just listen to the government. They have their own minds, ears and eyes. They know what is right and what is wrong. I have not seen people for a few months because I have been ill in the UK. When I watch TV, read newspapers and serf the net, I can tell that they are biased. This makes me so angry. I would go to protest for China if I were well! Nobody have ever influenced me on the issue and I speak from the bottom of my heart that it is not our government or anybody else, but it is when western media manipulates their people and tells lies that make the Chinese feel unfair and arouse the Chinese to protest back to support the Chinese government. Your so-called free media takes side on this issue and some others as well. I used to use it a lot, but I don't trust it any more. I would rather use Chinese media for more accurate information.
Lily, Leeds,

If the monks went to the street to stone the shops, kill poeple are not political involvement?? How silly this article is! The place they should stay is at the monasteries. the activities they should do are praying and teach people to be kind.

u know what the real chinese govt is? (noting abt the common man of china) , these r same CCP folks who backstabbed india in past. if u CCP realy wanted tibet to improve then u could hace done it by providing help in all respect, invasion and occupation is not at all neccessary for tht. in what way u justify the occupation of tibet? no moral rights to do so with u CCP.
Abhijeet, Pune, India,
Based on the comments above, these patriotic lessons must be really working, since the some of the China citizens seem to stand on one extreme end (presumely after years of such lessons), whilst the rest of the world on the other.
Take the poorest country in the world; let its 'richer' nieghbour occupy in to liberate them from poverty, and suddenly, the poor country become just a state of a rich country. How can this be logical, especially in this modern world?
Comparing with Europe and Australia to this situation is not appropriate. Surely international treaty and sovernity must have been established by now on this countries. But not Tibet.
Tibetans deserve equal rights and justice. No more, no less.. and this forced lessons certainly show no rights and no justice.
robin33, Singapore, Singapore
@Henry in Hong Kong
So if the minorities in China have better rights than the Han Chinese can you tell me whether a Tibetan or a Uighur could ever become president of China or head of the Chinese Communist Party (in the same way that Gordon Brown - Scottish - can be British prime minister)? If they are all Chinese as you say.
Minorities may be able to have more children than some Han Chinese (but not all), but some would argue that is a fundamental human right anyway. And it is well known that minorities in China tend to be much poorer than Han Chinese and they are exploited and oppressed by the Han system of government. The Han Chinese have deeply racist attitudes to minorities with darker skin eg the Tibetans.
Emma Hilton, London, UK
Agree to your comments!
In the early of last century, Tibet people summed up to be about 30k, but including 10k begger and slaves. We civilization society could not imagine the situation and the hard long progress to the modern era. So please shut up your big mouth to criticise China and its government. Just imagine if Tibet is your country part, if you can do better?

Well the invasion and occupation of Tibet came around the same time Europeans gave up their colonies which they obtained using the same means in Asia. And it is was no altruistic act. A lot off these places have democracy but a lot of interethnic tensions, terrorism and mass poverty. Of course the west answer to this is that the people are stupid and can't handle democracy. I bet many advocate recolonisation (as reading the Zimbabwe articles many think would solve Africa's problems). China on the other hand has united its billion odd people, lifted many other poverty. I'm sure if China wasn't as powerful the USA would give "freedom" in the same way they did Iraq and we would see all the violent power struggles and ethnic conflict happening there. Real freedom for the Tibetans and Chinese is being able to stick two fingers up to western opnion.
raymond, the norf, uk
This just goes to show that China still has a long way to go before it can be counted as a modern country with modern thought processes. It is still under development and the world should treat it as so. It is not the powerful threat that it is made out to be in the West and politically and economically it is still naive. It will take a few more generations of engagement with the West before China can take its' place in the world. Before then, we have to be careful how we treat her. Right now she is like a child. She is learning and how she grows up will be according to how she is brought up by the developed countries. Friendship, engagement and encouragement is the key - use the rod with too firm a hand as is starting to happen now and she'll turn against you
Jonno, Dudley, UK

This same 'Ministry of Truth' is alive and kicking in your bankrupt, murderous country, (WMD, Axis of Evil, not to mention the vested interests of the western media) you clearly don't have the wit to realise it.
You talk about 'hate week against the French' how long did the hate go on against the French in your country after they refused to support your murder and pillage of Iraq. The term 'cheese eating surrender monkeys' was born in the U.S.
''Thugs and Goons' is too mild a label for Bush and his henchmen.
Richard, Manchester,
A lot has been discussed about the Good and Bad happening in Tibet, but the only way it can be evaluated and known to outside world is through Freedom of expression, even if you give sweets to eat and no mouth to express the taste whether it is good or bad, then it is a poison. Allow Human Right activists and Social workers too to live in China and express their feelings, give freedom to Journalism, China will be appreciated and supported in its Works. I see the way how Chinese are trying to corrupt the Democracy in India through the Communist parties in INdia who hijacked Indian governement. Chinese gov. should stop being scary of their neighbours and give a fully extended friendship hand towards India. Improve your record in Africa and stop supplying arms to Sudan and Zimbabe--another Sudan in waiting.
Most of my quotes above seem to many of u ignorant of things, but really there is no good media to give me facts from China.
Raghuram, Chennai, India
It seems to me funny that some western guys quote the content of Chinese textbook as evidence that our Chinese are "brainwashed".
The truth is that, most of Chinese students including me don't believe doctrines in these books. In fact, our Chinese have heard enough false propaganda and fraudulent doctrines in old days like the age of âcultural revolutionâ. So, now, we are not so easy to believe newspaper of TV program. We only believe our own judgment based on reliable (firsthand) evidence. So, WE ARE NOT BRAINWASHED.
After Mar.14, I checked on the internet for any firsthand evidence about what happened in Tibet. I found many videos and pictures taken by western tourists. Iâve even read some (officially prohibited) books about the history and current situation in Tibet. And that makes me feel the Dalai Lama was lying when he talked about âcultural genocideâ, âpeaceful protestâ and âbloody crackdownâ.
So, the fact is, we Chinese people think by ourselves, express our own opinions (just like what Iâm doingâ¦Do you still believe most of foreign website are blocked by CN government?). And we are against Tibet separatists and any of their supporters.
Evanstle, Hefei, China
U cannot find a person who is loved by all, and the same, there is and will be never a Party supported by all.
People can hold different religious and views.
But separatist and media distortion are definitely hostile for all.
Adah, Shenzhen, China
I agree 100% with Michael Tomlinson of Melbourne, Australia who writes below that political dialogue is needed within China to resolve this.
It is a shame that pro-Tibetian independance protesters are automatically seen as anti-China. This is not a useful message.
If the Chinese people are happy with living how they do, so be it. However if a portion of that country (what we call Tibet) wants to be free, the most gracious thing that the Chinese government can do is to ensure that they are able to sustain themselves economically, then move out of the region politically.
However it is also true that we do not really know what is going on in such a distant region with such restricted press access.
Brijit , Paris, France
I am very pride that i am a Chinese! I love my motheland. There are many misunderstanding between the East and the West, so it is rude to interrupt others internal affairs.
liutong, shijiazhuang, china
I think China can benefit a lot from thos anti-China guys or groups' acts. If you West wants to play so called political games with China, please read the oldest books called Sunzi Tactics, and Thirty Six strategy first. Chinese people knew how to battle well with enemies many centuries ago.
ProChina, Weinan City, Shannxi,CHINA
for the tibet issue: complex and simple. at the moment, i suggest the cn government do 3 simple things: 1) stop suppling any food to the monk temple and let whoever want to donate to feed them up. the monks are spoiled; 2) build more schools and welfare facilities for the ordinary tibetans as usually done, 3) lock up the monks whoever cause riot. chinese government should not be scared of those who complains as only the lazy monks there are not happy and again stop spoiling them!

Tibet is Tibet. Tibet is not China. China is a country that persecutes the freedom of the individual and, of course, religion. Why? It is for the sake of power and self wealth. China has done this for so long to its people and surrounding countries, that I suspect the communists are terrified at the moment. Educated and informed people of this world are well aware of China's follies. It is only a matter of time before its archaic thinking is exposed and disappears. As His Holiness, the Dalai Lama has often said, non-violence takes a long time. No matter how long it takes, it is worth it. Tibet, its people and Buddhism have my complete support, and I am not alone. The right will win. The wrong will lose.
James Moore, Vancouver, Canada
We, including western media, and western friends, should be objective and rational to treat Tibet issue. As a Chinese, I feel proud, for a stable social, political and economic situation enables us to have a peaceful and happy life and make it possible for us to enjoy what we have, to dream what we dream. I think our Tebetan people will have the same feeling as what I have. Although Tibet is still an infertile area, we should see what we have done to improve the life of Tibetan, to strength the area's economic development. Pls do not distort the real situation and pls respect Chinese internal affair.
Wang Minghua, Nanjing, China
why have not any defferent veiws aboat Chinese people?you will find you were wrong if you think that the Chinese will be against their government in front of the foriegners. They may be two separat ones, when there no whestern unbelivable voices .No one can say I am against chinese govenment or some party but not chinese people, becauce it`s all abaut national interest in the intenational world.and the history have so many lessons for chinese .Listenning more to the commen people of china but not just what you want to hear ,and then you will get it.

when will european invaders get give america back to native americans and australians to the indigenous tribes? can the west stop being so hypocritical and sort out their own house before being so critical of china?
Howard, London, UK
In all this event, the western world 's leaders and some media are the directors, while the Dalai Lama is only an actor. The western world are very happy to see that there are intensive protests and violence in Tibet because it gives them a very good opportunity to criticize, condemn and attack China or even boycot Beijing Games. Their aims are to split and weaken China. If China is splitted into several small countries like the European countries they would be extremely happy. If China return to a very weak country like 1oo years ago (Tsing Dynasty) they would be very happy since no other country would threaten their superpowers nation status. So we Chinese should join ourselves together to oppose these anti-China operation and protect our country from foreign invasion like 150 years ago.
jhkdsj, China, China
It will be very difficult for the Chinese authorities to "re-educate" in 2 months people who have lived in monasteries since childhood. Monks who have spent much their lives praying for the souls of the dead to reach heaven are not likely to change their views in such a short time.
Law abiding ethnic Han Chinese were attacked and killed during the recent protests. There is compelling evidence that monks were involved in the orchestration of these protests. Honest and hard-working ethnic Han Chinese living in Tibet must be protected from the excesses of religious fanatics.
Des, Edinburgh,
I want to say something which seems not relating to this topic.
When we normal Chinese don't express our views, you westerns will say that we don't have the freedom to express. When we start to say something, you westerns will say that we are brainwashed. Why? The only one reason is, what we said was not what you guys want us to say.
Luo Sang Ren Qin, Cheng Du,
To be honest, what happened in Tibet has appeared in the past and will appear in the future. I think it is caused by human beings' nature.
Aggie, shenzhen,
So many comments, so much knowledge! And yet it is clear we don't know what's going on in Tibet. It has been closed to "outsiders" to, apparently, make sure we do not. This is the real problem for Westerners used to freedom of information. China has very likely done much to improve the material lives of many Tibetans, but it has also apparently done much to oppress their spiritual lives, as with the Falung Gong. The CCP is God! Thou shalt hold no other god before me! seems to be the CCP policy. They have also appropriated the Olympics for their political goals, succeeding in intimidating many countries, especially in Asia, into accepting the Beijing line to the point of accepting those torch guards while holding the locals at bay. The Olympics now has nothing to do with freedom and peace.
Jack, Fairfield,
Neville,
stop sayng Han chinese, Mongolian Chinese, Tibet chinese... they r all Chinese... and i bet they look all the same to u, u cant even tell the differences between japs and koreans by looking at them.. so stop saying HAN chinese when u dont even know what are they.....
And the thing is all minor groups in China hv better rights over "han" chinese, so "han" chinese are actually second class.. correct me if i am wrong...
Henry, HK,
For those who think themselves are fighting for the benefit of Tibetans, Have you ever been to Tibet? Have you ever talked with the normal Tibetans in Tibet? What you hear is only the cliches from those monks who follow the Dalai Lama. Do you know that most of our Tibetans are not seeking independence of Tibet?
"The Han Chinese have moved in and made the Tibetans second class citizens in their own land. "... Hey Neville, what the fu*k you think you know? You think you know the 'truth'?
We Tibetans do want a free-expression, we do want to have the freedom to practise our religion. But the point is, we have already had it. Who tell you that we don't have the freedom? Who? Not our normal Tibetans, but the Dalai Lama.
We Tibetans also want to live a better life, a modern life. Now our lives have been much much better than 50 years before. We don't need the Dalai Lama. Thanks.
Luo Sang Ren Qin, Cheng Du,
This is a dialogue of the deaf. The Chinese contributors are saying they have brought all sorts of material benefits to Tibet, the supporters of Tibet are saying the Chinese have taken Tibet's freedom away. There is in fact no dialogue here, only accusations. The problem is that the Chinese government does not know how to engage in dialogue, only how to try and impose their will on others by force. Throughout history this has always led to resentment and bitterness on the part of those oppressed. Until the general political debate evolves in China there seems no hope for any kind of settlement. The Chinese leaders should have nothing to fear from letting the Tibetans decide for themselves, but we don't seem to have any way of getting this point across as we have no common political language or frame of reference
Michael Tomlinson, Melbourne, Australia
I am just flabergasted at the hypocricy. When is politic from the pulpit is condone or tolerated in the west. Those buddhist monk should stick to their buddhist scripture and not involve in the politic I thought the searation of Church and State is the crowning achievement of the western culture Yet they want to deny China the same right.
Even the Christian church accept this separation of Church and State with the parabel of Jesus holding the Roman Coin.Theocracy doesn't mix with democracy!
And don't tell me that Dalai Lama now embraced the concept of democracy They way he treated dissident Shugden Dorje within his own rank doesn't give me comfort
Considering that they already commit the crime of sedition to the state, their punishment to endure long drawn reeducation can be considered humane.

Once those wonderful people from other nations get their own countries in order then they can criticize China if they feel so, however. Guantanamo bay, kidnapping in other countries, torture, humiliation and death is not really following human rights and that is only the USA.
Most of Europe also turned a blind eye to "rendering" people to various countries for torture.
IT should also be noted that in the RIOTS in Tibet 18 perfectly innocent Chinese were killed simply because they were Chinese. To not step in and stop these demonstrations would have meant the government was incompetent.
As a final note, if you think supporting the Olympics will somehow legitimize China policy then simply stay away; that includes some very stupid athletes.

I am a Hong Kong Chinese. I fully understand Neville's feelings.
It looks like many mainland Chinese support the official view of the Chinese Government. Two reasons, firstly, those mainland Chinese who have expressed different views have been jailed; and secondly, thinking that there is no other Chinese view, these mainland Chinese mistakenly believe that foreign evil people are organizing to undermine Chinese (a favorite conspiracy theory encouraged by the Chinese Communist Party). Mainland Chinese should wake up: there is no entity called "Western media", there are only individual journalists in the west who report on events in Tibet; they may be wrong some time, but they report with freedom and, in most cases, professionally. Don't be fooled by the Chinese Communist Party! Be a free thinking Chinese. I suggest all mainland Chinese should listen to Dalai Lama's press meetings that are freely available in the internet, and to understand the Tibet situation from all angles.

In my opinion, the re-education means the gov is keeping one eye on the the monks and preventing them far away from being deluding by rantankerous Dalai Lama abroad. It's working well to let them realize the truths and the histories.
It's good for territoria lintegrity and the peaces of all chinese even the world especially before the comingby Olympics.

The reason that Han chinese move to tibet province is the same as European move to Australia, America, the way Han treat native tibetan is much better than European treating native australian or indian, so based on your logic, my suggestion to you is to package your stuffs and go back to Europe .....

Damned Dalai Lama , damned splittists. Do you remember what Communist Party have brought you and what you have achieved since revolution and reform? Can't you understand China can't be slpitted like before? Do you want to live in a miserable life like before- war, poverty, insult from other countries and nations? Now you have local leaders elected from Tibetans, what else do you want? Chinese government respect minorities-the policy regulates in autonomous regions, part of leaders must be local minorities. We are leading China together and all hosts of China. In this moment, we should focus on development, not your ridiculous splittism. All Chinese people should surpport our country to go through this hard time. China can not be slpitted by any means. Chinese citizens, it's time for us to stand out and show the world our determination towards unity. Let's tell the world China is not as weak as before. We shall go all out to fight with those who try to split China.
Vievie Hoo, Linyi, China
The Han Chinese have moved in and made the Tibetans second class citizens in their own land.
The ignorant, morally bankrupt rubbish I hear coming from some Chinese people makes me ashamed.

Religious freedom only works when the religion doesn't have anything to do with political ambition. For tibetan buddhism, they tend to mix religious power with political power and have Dalai Lama as both their God and King. This idealism is already out of the religious extent which means their religious freedom has to be decreased due to political reasons. I'm sure the Chinese government would not bother spending the money of re-education if they are just simple monks like those in western countries.

What is happening in Tibet is reminiscent of the George Orwellâs classic 1984. Remember the Ministry of Truth, thought police, hate week campaigns, newspeak such as ignorance is strength or freedom is slavery or war is peace, and so on. So now we are witnessing thought police at work in Tibet, hate week against the French establishments in China, newspeak that the Dalai Clique is splitist against the motherland or Chinese occupation of Tibet liberated the Tibetans from serfdom, the Big Brother in Beijing is watching over the Tibetan people because he âlovesâ them, and the list goes on. So those of you who have not read 1984 or have forgotten Orwellâs message, do yourself a favor and read or re-read it. With all that Chinese government (âthugs and goonsâ as someone aptly described them) is doing before the Olympics, I urge all men and women of goodwill to boycott the Olympics.

As a Chinese, I should say that I don't expect any effect from these bald homiletic re-education campaigns, but it is the only thing our goverment can do now.
Most people get tired of the official propagandism, which always tell us "if you love your nation, you should support CCP".
I love my nation, and I support the Olympics in Beijing and the goverment's reaction to Tibet riot , but it doesn't mean that I love the CCP

I think Chinese have done a lot to modernize Tibet in the past 50 years. They have turned it around from a backward, impoverished area into one that is forward-looking and prospering. I would like to congratulate China and the Chinese government for a job well done. I think the Western media should look at all the progress that has been made by the Chinese and praise them for what they have achieved. China has set a wonderful example for the rest of the Third World to admire and learn from.
