Zimbabwe’s opposition leader said today that he will take part in a presidential runoff and will soon return despite a violent crackdown on his supporters.
Morgan Tsvangirai said his supporters would feel “betrayed" if he did not face Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in the runoff.
“I am ready, the people are ready,” he said. “I intend to return as shortly as possible and intend to begin a victory tour.”
Speaking in South Africa he added he would only participate in the run-off if international observers and media had full access to ensure the poll is free and fair. The opposition has accused Mugabe and his ruling Zanu-PF party of trying to intimidate voters and rig the last ballot.
It was the first time the opposition leader has committed himself to taking part in the run-off which, he says, is not necessary because he won the election outright.
Opposition officials and independent human rights activist have accused Mugabe of orchestrating a campaign of violence against the opposition since the vote on March 29.

It was a no-brainer that he had to run; not participating would amount to surrendering to Mugabe. The next few days should be interesting. Will the authorities arrest him on arrival in Zimbabwe?

Mugabe did have the confidence of the international community but has totally betrayed his countrymen by corruptly stealing Government monies and ruining the economy using reparation as an excuse.South Africa, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique must declare against him. Tsvangirai must be supported.
