Nearly 900 students have been buried in a massive earthquake in southwest China, state media reported today.
Details of their plight were still coming through but reports said that the students were buried when their school building collapsed in Dujiangyan, near the epicentre of the quake in Sichuan province.
The confirmed death toll from the 7.8 magnitude quake - which rattled tower blocks from Beijing to Bangkok - was at least 107, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Buildings also collapsed in the town of Wenchuan. Communications to the town appeared to have been severed, with calls failing to connect to both fixed line and mobile telephones.
Premier Wen Jiabao left Beijing and tried to reach the epicentre after the tremor rocked the region at 0628 GMT at a depth of 18 miles. The decision to send such a senior leader was the first hint that officials feared a high casualty toll in a region with a large Tibetan population that has seen anti-Chinese unrest in recent weeks.
Four children died in a suburb of southwestern Chongqing city when the earthquake toppled two primary schools. More than 100 children were injured.
Troops have already been sent to help with disaster relief work in Wenchuan, a city of about 111,000 people in Sichuan. Tian Yixiang, who works for the emergency office of the People’s Liberation Army, said the soldiers would assist the local government there. Wenchuan is best-known as the home of the Wolong Nature Reserve, China's leading research and breeding base for the endangered giant panda. Calls to the base failed to connect.
The government in Aba prefecture of Sichuan province said buildings had collapsed and many were cracked. Mountain roads had been damaged.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Vietnam and Thailand, startling office workers in high-rise buildings. There were no reports of damage. In Beijing, office workers rushed in panic out of towers in the capital’s financial district.
One of China’s tallest buildings, the Jinmao Tower in Shanghai, as well as other skyscrapers were ordered to evacuate after the tremor and aftershocks.
A resident of Mianyang, in Sichuan, said: “The air-conditioning unit fell off the wall. Vases are all broken. The sick in hospital have been moved outside to open fields. There is no electricity and no mobile phone reception. People are afraid of aftershocks."
China’s worst earthquake in modern history was centred in the northern city of Tangshan and killed some 250,000 people on July 27, 1976.
That tremor lasted for 15 seconds and flattened 90 percent of buildings. It was the deadliest in the world of the 20th century.

It's a tragedy no less than that of Tangshan many years ago. This year China has suffered a lot, so as the Chinese people. I hope the hurt of the loss of their important someones can be cured with the lapse of the time. We can be challenged, but not be knocked down.

Ray in London: Mandarin uses the same word for students of any age, and it often carries over into Chinese residents' use of English. By British standards, these are secondary school age children.

M J McClave: Nanning is some distance from Sichuan. A report on China Central Television (CCTV) mentioned that the quake was felt strongly there, but did not mention any casualties.

When mao died, his successor started reforms that lead to china developing, and put china on the road to the superpower it is today. So maybe, china will become more powerful after this

"Students" ? Do you actually mean students, or school-children ? As they are in China, you could probably use the term 'scholars', though I admit the term would probably be inapplicable if this tragic event had occured in the UK.

Chinas worst earthquake in modern history was centred in the northern city of Tangshan and killed some 250,000 people on July 27, 1976. Mao Zedong died a few weeks later. Any ideas? What could the present quake presage?

At my school in Shunyi we only got the tremors, but it was strong enough to notice. That was my first time in a 'tremor'. I feel guilty now. Everyone saw the Earthquake as a way to get out of class. 900 Students got burried. Its not fair and not right. Condolences to their families and friends.
