A loss-making Japanese rail company has found the perfect mascot to bring back business - Tama the tortoiseshell cat.
All the nine-year-old cat does is sit by the entrance of Kishi station in a railway uniform cap and pose for photos for the tourists. Tama has done such a good job of raising revenue for the Kishikawa train line that she was recently promoted to “super-station-master”.
The Wakayama Electric Railway Co said: “She is the perfect station master. She never complains, even though passengers touch her all over. She has patience and charisma.”
Appointing a cat to turn around fortunes makes cultural sense in Japan, where cats are believed to bring in business. People are snatching up postcards, notebooks and badges decorated with Tama's picture. There is even a ¥1,365 (£6.65) book of photographs called Diary of Tama, the Station Master.
The Kishikawa line had been losing ¥500 million a year. Since Tama's appointment last year, passenger numbers have risen 10 per cent. Tama has been rewarded with a bonus - all in cat food. (AP)

Cool. They have a real live Maneki Neko (Mah-neh-kee Neh-koh) at the train station. Many stores in Japan have a ceramic Maneki Neko as a symbol to attract customers. Hope Tama lives a good long time to keep the rail company in the black. (But they better not overfeed her like many of us Americans.

I am looking forward to meeting Tama soon. That adorable feline works hard for the money so she's my kind of professional. She's a little on the tubby side (stress perhaps) so maybe a few hours at the gym might be in order for this fast lane corporate kitty?

In Japan, we call "Mike-neko" that's kind of cat.
(Mike means 3 colors hair = white, block and brown and neko means cat)
Tama is mike-neko.
Yes! she is lovely cat.

That's great!!!, I really love cats and I hope Tama still working for a long time so I can meet her.

Erm, if that's her in the photo, then technically she's not a tortoiseshell. she's a tortoiseshell and white, otherwise known as a calico. Damn, I'm picky.
