The death toll of a suspected Indonesian serial killer today rose to 11, as police dug up six more bodies from his back garden.

Verry Henyanksyah, 30, was arrested last week after confessing to murdering his lover and leaving the mutilated corpse in a suitcase in Jakarta, police spokesman Abu Bakar Nataprawira said.

Last week, four bodies were found behind Henyanksyah’s home in Jombang, a town in East Java province. Today, police and local villagers dug up six more corpses, including those of a woman and her three-year-old daughter, Nataprawira said.

Television footage showed hundreds of villagers gathering around the field as officials dug severely decomposed corpses from the ground. Police said the bodies showed signs of being hit.

Officers said that there was as yet no clear motive for the killings, which are believed to have occurred over a one-year period.
