At least 13 people were killed and scores injured in Indian-administered Kashmir yesterday when police fired into crowds of protesters in Srinagar, the summer capital.
Tens of thousands had defied a military curfew to join the funeral procession of Sheikh Abdul Aziz, the separatist leader who was shot dead by police on Monday as he led a huge pro-independence march. Similar protests were reported across Kashmir.
The unrest comes amid a sharp deterioration of relations in Kashmir between the state’s dominant Muslim population and its Hindus, who are a majority in every other Indian state.
Elsewhere in Srinagar, crowds overwhelmed armed police to break the house arrest of Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, the head of the Hurriyat Conference, an influential coalition of separatist parties at the forefront of the opposition against Indian rule. Mr Farooq then led an angry procession of thousands that made its way to the Jamia Masjid, Kashmir’s largest mosque, where Sheikh Aziz’s body was held.
Hundreds of mourners had wailed over the body through the night, chanting: “Freedom for Kashmir”. Mr Farooq told The Times of Sheikh Aziz’s death: “This was a targeted killing, an assassination. No water cannon were used to disperse the crowd, no rubber bullets. Blood was spilt by the authorities like water.”
He demanded that trade routes with Pakistan that have been closed since Partition in 1947 be opened, a move that would reduce Kashmir’s economic dependence on Indian markets.
Relations between the two nuclear powers, between whom Kashmir is divided, worsened when Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the Pakistani Foreign Minister, condemned excessive force by Indian security forces against Muslim protesters.
Mr Qureshi said that he had “learnt with great sorrow and grief” of the martyrdom of Sheikh Aziz. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs criticised the comments as unhelpful.
The burial of Sheikh Aziz, held in the Martyrs Graveyard in Srinagar, passed relatively peacefully. The security forces looked to minimise their presence – though mourners’ prayers battled with the drone of an Indian army helicopter.
Violence was reported across the Himalayan state. Three people were shot dead in the town of Bandipora, about 40 miles from Srinagar. Another demonstrator was killed by police in Kishtwar in the south of Kashmir. Two were killed in Jammu, the Hindu-dominated winter capital, according to a security forces.
The disturbances follow a row over a gift of land to a Hindu shrine by the state government in June. The order was rescinded, triggering protests by Hindus that have included a blockade of the only highway running to the Muslim-dominated Kashmir Valley.
Muhammad Yaseen Malik, the chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front said: “The use of brute force [by police] makes it clear that Indian democracy and its so-called secularism are eyewash for Kashmiris.” In Delhi, Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, called for fresh talks to be held after discussions between political parties last week failed to make progress.

World ignorance is deplorable about KASHMIR issue. India shouldn't have gone to UN, who recommended one of the most stupid solution that "no INDIANS can go and settle in KASHMIR, while muslims of Pakistan could!" What a brilliant suggestion probably inspired by jilted Britain.
Pradeep, New York, USA
Muslims in Kashmir valley had lighted candles and earthen lamps the day govt rescinded its order to gift the land to the Hindu shrine. None shed tears when police fired on Hindu protestors in Jammu. Your reporter should have mentioned this in his dispatch.
Ramesh Parida, Delhi, India
The Kashmiris should be given independence -- as Kosovo - South Ossetia - Abkhazia - are been given this gift in the recent times. I beleieve, if they (indians) wont be given inependence in 1947 by Britain, then How they would feel against Occupiers -- who in this case are Indins.

Shame on people who think they deserve freedom for themselves but deny it to others.

Shame on you Patel for thinking that a colonial power is always best for the minorities as well. It is typically the minorities who are oppressed & have lack of opportunities eg China, India, Russia, USA (indiginous people), Australia etc etc. Take your bias away and see the REAL issue here

Islam needs a Martin Luther in the worst way. How does any tolerant society try to cope with an intolerant one without becoming intolerant in the process?
Sam, Somerville, USA
It is quite clear that Muslims can't co-exist with non-Muslims in secular democracies. Whatever a govt does, still there are spins, blames and excuses.
It is happening in most places around world.
Symptoms are already there in UK, some European nations and more.
Kashmir is wake up call!
Krishna R. Kumar, Udupi, India
Any British born has no right to advise what India should do abt Kashmir bcoz UK left India and Pakistan as hard-core enemies. Their forefathers' pre-independence divide and rule policy have brought more sufferings than any other thing to the whole South Asia.
Vitty, Mumbai, India
It is surprising to read the views of the non-Kashmiri/non-Muslims here. What exactly do you folks know to say that the Kashmiri Muslim's rights are abused by the Indian government? Your this very attitude has bred terrorists in your own country. Wake up at least now!!!
Anand SHarma, Boston, USA
The Hindu demonstrators were protesting against temporary allotment of land to a temple and subsequent withdrawl by the Government while the Muslim demonstrators were separatists. Hence the difference in treatment of the two. Hope this makes it clear to those who still are in doubt.
Anand Sharma, Boston, USA
I have closely witnessed the violence in the Kashmir. This is shame on the so called largest democracy of the world where the demonstrators in the two regions of the state are treated differently showering water on the hindu demonstraters of jammu and bullets on those of kashmir.
Ghulam , Srinagar,
It is not about how many Muslims there are in the rest of India compared with Kashmir, it is the fact that the Muslims in Kashmir are treated differently. Their rights are ignored, promises made by central goverment broken, abuses are widespread, politics is a sham and even Pakistan uses them!
Tom, Nottingham, UK
At the core of the Kashmir problem remains the will of the people who reject accession of the state to India,Kashmir's identity and the spirit of "Azaadi"i.e. freedom. All manner of oppression by India has failed to subdue the spirit of Kashmir.A solution acceptable to them will have to be found.
Afzal A. Neseem, Lincoln Nebraska, U.S.A.
this is high time to address the plight of kashmiris, kashmiris dont want pakistan, neither they need india, kashmiris are fighting for their economy and for their rights. Seculirism preached by india is shame for whole world. India should lift its illegal ocupation of kashmir
M Yatoo, Leicester, London
why India does not allow Kashmir to get freedom because there are one dozen other separete movements in India.India never been a united country in history. It was always divided into princely states and small autonomous goverments.India is not a country of one nation.
ali afzal, london, uk
Inida must lift the occupation and give the Kashmiri's their independence.
Mick, London,
Sham on People who are of the opinion that they will be better off by seperating from India. After all even to-day thare are more Muslims in India tha Pakistan.
I pray all the times that Indian Ocuupied Kashmir always remain Within India.
Patel, Houslow, UK
