Pervez Musharraf’s fate remains uncertain today with rumours still circulating that he could go into exile in Saudi Arabia, the United States, Britain, the United Arab Emirates or Turkey.
The former President and military chief's preference is to stay in Pakistan and to move into a farmhouse he had been building on the outskirts of Islamabad, but that is considered too unsafe, according to officials close to him.
He is now understood to be moving out of Army House – his home since 1998 - and into a former guesthouse in the military cantonment in Rawalpindi, a garrison town outside Islamabad.
General Kayani, who took over as army chief last year, is moving out of the former guesthouse and into Army House.
However, Mr Musharraf will continue to enjoy military protection - a privilege not usually granted to former presidents - because of the threat from separatists and Islamic militants, who have already tried to kill him three times.
The Army also sent a veiled warning to Mr Musharraf’s political opponents yesterday when it laid on an honour guard as he left the presidency.
While many Pakistanis blame him for the country's economic and political woes, even some of his staunchest critics say he should be given credit for his achievements in office and his decision to leave peacefully.
“In time to come, when history is written by people who are less emotional and more impartial, he will be accorded a more decent place in our history,” said Najam Sethi, editor of the Daily Times.
“There is no doubt about certain things. The economy did well. He brought women in to the mainstream more than any other leader had done,” he said.
“And at a time when he could have got nasty, he could have been like a wounded bear… he decided to call it a day.”

As an American I lived in Pakistan under Bhutto, Sharif and alas Musharraf. I watched everything that I enjoy as an American, here in the US, improve in Pakistan under Musharraf. What a change!!
It is unfathomable to me that people are happy with Zadhari. Time will show the truth.
Delena, ChicoUSA,
What a fate of patriot. General Mosarraf loved his country did what ever he can for his country. His way might be wrong but his honesty and patriotism for Pakistan is no match with Corrupt Newaz and me 10% Jardari.
Let the general live silent for few years... people will bring him back

Regardless to what is being said and have been said about Gerneal ,President Musharraf, he should have never allowed Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan. I am hoping that General Kayani would not allow anyone to touch him as long as he resides in Pakistan. General Musharraf has been good for Pakistan

What: economic miracles turned into "economic woes"?
The US, UK and allies never understood Gen Mush and will not get a grip on Pakistani establishment. Here problem starts!
He is the familiar Pakistani backstabbing ruler!
Let us see. Gen Musharraf has many options including US with son!

I think West engineered getting rid of Musharraf. They got sick of him and did not need him anymore. This was big mistake. He was good ally of west against Taliban. Now NATO and West is going to lose in Afghanistan. Watch and see. These two jokers Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif are with Taliban.

We the people of Pakistan have very short memory as far as the rulers of this country concerned. Yes impartial and non emotional historia will judge him as an individula who have done lot good to this country alongwith destruction of the institutions. Perhaps 9th march 2007 will be referred as D day
