With a burst of flame and smoke, a Chinese rocket blasted off into orbit yesterday. But it was the state news agency that moved faster than the speed of light, publishing the transcript of an “in-space” conversation between the astronauts before they had even left Earth.
The Xinhua news agency posted an article on its website breathlessly describing the Shenzhou VII spacecraft in orbit and quoting exchanges between the crew, possibly during the most important part of the mission: China’s first spacewalk. The only problem was that the crew were still on terra firma.
The story had disappeared by the end of the day and its appearance was described as a technical error. The gaffe highlighted China’s readiness to resort to sleight of hand — if not outright fakery — to present a perfect public image, such as the little girl who lip-synched at the Olympics opening ceremony because the child who did the actual singing was not deemed pretty enough.
Back in real time, China yesterday really did launch the riskiest mission so far of its fledgeling space programme, sending three astronauts on a voyage whose highlight will be the space walk.
President Hu Jintao had some parting words of encouragement for the three airforce colonels at the desert launch centre who were about to embark on the country’s third manned space venture. He addressed the astronauts — or taikonauts, from the Mandarin for “space” — as they stood in their white suits behind a glass wall to protect them from contamination.
“This will be a major step forward for our country’s aerospace technology,” Mr Hu said. “You can certainly fulfil this glorious and sacred task. The Motherland and its people await your triumphant return.”
The space walk, essential if China is to fulfil its ambition of building a permanent space laboratory, is expected to take place today or tomorrow. It is likely to be carried out by the team leader, the 41-year-old Zhai Zhigang, on his first flight. Two astronauts will wear space suits for the walk but only one will leave the orbiter module to retrieve experiments placed outside.
But the Xinhua story, dated September 27, reported conversations that Mr Zhai and his colleagues had yet to hold. The dialogue and running commmentary went:
“First-level measurement arrangement!
“After this order, signal lights were all switched on. Various data show up on rows of screens, hundreds of technicians staring at the screens, without missing any slightest changes . . .
“One minute to go! . . .
“The firm voice of the controller broke the silence of the whole ship. Now, the target is captured 12 seconds ahead of the predicted time . . .

Believe it or not? It is all up to you. I believe & feel very proud of d Chinese space achievement.
Soon enough, d Chinese will be setting up their space station. I am sure of that & many more other space explorations - say a Chinese on the moon? Time flies and will tell.
No sour grapes please!
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Well, the video was sure interesting. I haven't seen that much fakery since my last Sci-Fi movie in 1970. Great shots of the rocket, where are the cameras in the space capsule of their 'illustrious brave men' ?
When you have a 'script' like that, you have a movie. This sadly, was a poorly made one
Mark , Spokane, Washington, USA!
This illustrates that the USA, as a free society, must maintain truth in journalism and that soicalism (communism) is nothing to aspire toward.
Pat Callahan, Somerville, USA
Taking lessons from Saddam Hussein on saying one thing to the world while actually being in a different situation with regards to weapons. You can't tell me that our intelligence services were so daft they couldn't spot the difference.
Farrukh, Woking,
What else can you expect based on previous actions?
Olympics opening ceremony anyone?
Geoff, Solihull,
China's progress is amazing.
shron, beijing,
"ensure perfection in the public image" - maybe Alistair Campbell has been giving them lessons.
Greg, Bristol, UK
Chinese, excellent!
CHEN, Chengdu,
Sounds that the singer of London 8 minutes on the olympics opening was not fake? Humorous!
Big deal! Every reporter prepares the script beforehand, or he/she will be fired for the slow news.
Kerin, Akron, U.S.A.
You're out of date ! Now its "Beijing- we have an issue.
These days the world doesn't have problems, it has issues.
Phil de Buquet, Newport,
What exactly are they doing that the USA and the USSR didn't do 40 years ago?
Battar, Kiryat Bialik, Israel
any it will be more or less the same thing in such a conversation, after translation overall. if you really want to check it, i think you should do it in chinese
wxy, paris, france
did they have a BORIS in the capsual?
FYI Boris was small lucky pendant/toy on a string attached to the console and would show on the cameras when the crew was in zero-G.
if no chinese boris, then it makes proof they went up more difficult.
also no live telemetry from inside the capsual on launch
simon, norwich, uk
didnt the Americans do the same in the 60's and got everyone
to belive they landed on the moon?
yeh right, sure they did, have'nt been back though?
tony castle, rennes, france
I truly hope for success and the safe return of these men. The sad thing I see in this is the lack of cooperation between people of the earth. The exploration of space by man could be a great future for us and we could get there faster, cheaper and get more done if we all worked together.
Bruce, Eureka, The Redwood Empire
Total waste of money, take a look outside Beijing children's hospital, stacks of families sleeping (or trying to) on the cold floor. They are probably too afraid to even dare say what they think about this 'old hat' space walk. Its not Chinese anyway, its RUSSIAN, like the technology and staff used.
Sam, scunthorpe, Uk
Ediner, it's easy, We've got 007, haven't we? though it's imaginary or fictional stuff!
Mark, london,
Are the Chinese spacemen sent to the outer space or not?
Why make such big fuss over the preprepared news? I feel shocked some people even believed J M's report!
shengqi, beijing,
Why not send your spacemen to space before the spacemen comment about it as if they are there? Maybe the Shenzhou VII space mission was all just filmed in a movie studio by Zhang Yimou anyway.
Marco, Bangkok, Thailand
300 Million Chinese are UNEMPLOYED.
5 Million are HOMELESS since the Sichuan Earthquake.
80% of rural Chinese can't afford BASIC medical care.
Violence in Tibet & Xinjiang. And poison milk is just the tip of China's quality control problems.
Yet the CCP spends BILLIONS on a space rocket
Ghang Rinpoche , Xining, China
The Chinese probably got the idea of the fake spacewalk from the USA's fake moon landing
ben trovato , cape town ,
If an ant got killed by a policeman in China, it woud be reported as violation of animal rights, inhuman and no repect to nature. Sadly newspaper seems to sell better by out of all proportions China bashing . It is time for cooperation rather than antagonising each other for a better world
William Gint, Glasgow, UK
As the Chinese probably have more US dollars than the US, I think they can afford to send rockets into space.
They'll probably be selling sticks of rock with "the moon" written right through it by next week and selling it as moon rocks.
leila , manchester, uk
And we hold communist countries to no standards because....
Emerson, Los Angeles, USA
i think the china goverment try to be stupid and make the western think china is not threat..
i'm a chinese, i know how the smartest poplen in china play game like this...(think if they want to do it properly, there will not have any problem like this for people to laugh)
jxscl, leeds,
could they possily release a report on tomorrow nights lottery numbers? I'm a bit skint at the moment
Jon, London,
I suggest to send some British to the space and check weather China's government lie.
Ediner, Edinburgh, Scotland
Do u know the byword that the grapes are sour anyway. Why not send your spaceman to the space to show the world u have a sweet grape.
camusjoy, Shanghai, China
shame on the chinese govt ! they are turning out to be a hoax, just like in the olympics. the govt tried to fool the world in the same manner they fool their own citizens.
jim, shanghai, china
Its not a surprise, if someone does reporting in sports, they will know the fact that journalists always actually prepare tow versions articles, thats how they can put the news on the paper at the fastest speed! they dont write down articles until they know the result, they just prepared earlier on!
Mark, london,
Fake news reports.
Fake child 'singer' in the Olympic's opening.
Deadly milk caused by attempts to fake protein levels.
Fake pollution reports. Fake DVD's. Fake software. Fake antiques. Fake designer labels....
Is anything NOT fake in the People's Republic of Fake... er China?
Ghang Rinpoche , Xining, China
*Tracey*
Same goes for the USA... Its all propaganda against the chinese ...just to stop them from becoming world power...Do you really believe the USA figures for how many soldiers have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan??? no its all lies these governments!!!
Stephanie, bedfordshire, UK
Richard: if you removed everything from your house which passed through China at some point during its production process, it would be very empty indeed. Most things really can be trusted.
Rogier, Maastricht, NL
Oh, no! Not more boasting. It's all a bit late. The Yanks and the Ruski's did all this aeons ago.
Colin, Carmarthen, United Kingdom
so what US faked entire moon landings
smith , london, UK
HAHAHAHA! Well, if China can produce everything from fake Olympic singers to a fake Rolex, why not a fake astronaut conversation?
Celia, Seattle, USA
I give full support to the Chinese and hope it is a successful mission to space. I am sure all Chinese, myself included, are very very proud of your achievements. Wishing you guys all the best with the lovely food on board and enjoy!! And I do hope my other comments appear, all 8 in total btw.
Jay, Sydney, Australia
An old Marxist trick to impress the people that their system of government is best, even though the Soviets have now proven otherwise.
B J Deller, Marbella, Spain
Fake fireworks, fake milk and now fake astronauts. Can we trust anything that comes out of China?
Richard, Podgorica, Montenegro
Presumably the technical error responsible for the articles showing the true ages of their gymnasts
Damian, New York, USA
is it just me, or did the pictures from inside the capsule seem remarkably stable during takeoff?
will, grimsby, uk
The most significant achievement was the USSR's and the USA's because when they put humans in space, they did it with the IT technology of 50 years ago. It's not really an "achievement" to do it today - any country could do it if they were willing to spend the vast sums of money necessary.
Nicholas, Singapore,
Lokk at all those in here laughing coming from countries that need the US to get into space.
Jammer, San Francisco, USA
Can this surprise anyone? It's state-run media, and it says only what the gov't wants it to say. There is no relation to truth. Had the rocket blown up, the Chinese people would never know. How many infants and children have died from tainted milk? Do you really believe the Chinese figures? Ha!
Tracey, Anaheim, USA
i guess the dialogue should be on their exercise for the mission, not the real one, the journalist shoud check that again to confirm it.
as a gov.'s project, this move is just a manner to boost china's science development.
wang, beijing, china
China is a super power and being a Pakistani I am proud of our friend achievements.
Zahid, Lahore, Pakistan
I'm not Chinese, but I'm disgusted at these mean and almost racist comments from Westerners. Don't you have anything nicer or smarter to say? If you think it's so easy to send men to space, why don't you try it yourself? None of you would make it.
Y. Uno, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Kinny - I suppose it depends on whether Xinhua reported the conversation as speculation or actual real news, doesn't it? I haven't seen the Xinhua article so I don't know for sure, but the way this article is written, it sounds like it was (going to be) reoprted as news...
Matthew Lancey, Sydney, Australia
Are you guys still sore about the little girl lip sync? Here's something for you, Pavarotti also lip synced at the Olympics too!
John, Manchester, UK
China's space effort is run by tens of thousands of smart engineers with solid backing from the politburo. If they run the space programme like they run their export economy, Russia, Europe and the US can only play catch up. They laugh best who laugh last. Correct?
Rakesh K. Simha, New Delhi, India
Congratulations on China's successful launch of the Shenzhou VII or Divine vessel VII or sacred vessel VII!
As a Chinese, I'd like to pray for the three astronauts or taikonauts aboard the spaceship. I wish they would return safely after a challenging spacewalk.
Chun-Quan Meng, Xi'an, China
I think its kind of exciting to hear of other countries exploring space like this. I don't care where they're from.
Anna, Rome, USA
What you guys can show to the world is only discrimination?
China can do much better beyond your imagination.
Jane Chau, Wuxi, China
I think it's not enough, China still has a long way to go.
Johnny, Dubai, UAE
Manned spaceflight??
Yawn....
Been there. Done that.
... and the Moon also.
Dave, Phoenix, AZ, USA
China's third manned spacecraft Shenzhou VII blasted off, carrying three astronauts to attempt the country's first-ever space walk.
go China!
mao tao, shanghai, peoples republic china
I think I speak for everyone when I say "lol".
Kazuki, Tokyo, Japan
Could the Chinese media not have been just role playing with what could be said between the astronauts in the event they go up? I mean, I am sure I recall some mainstream tabloids in the UK have acted out what leaders coversations may have gone like or may go like. Soo much China bashing.
Kinny, Cambridge, UK
Maybe we're being fooled all along. The Chinese probably have bases on Jupiter already.
Lungs, London, England
ha ha that has to be the funniest thing I have read on this website for a very long time, can these people get anything right? I mean come on, how are we to know they are even in space now?
Absolutly rediculous, like monty python film!! they probably made the space suits out of tin foil!!!!!!!!!!
nick bacon, london uk, uk
Why so surprised? Isn't it natural that a lot of hot air would be generated by such a powerful take off? You have to be blind not to see the huge smoke screen at the initial stage of taking off. I swear I saw David Copperfield appeared somewhere in the background!
Wing, Poole, UK
Who if anybody is aboard?
noeldain, paris,
the US must think that they are the only intelligent people going in space, just keep on borrowing money from China and they will surpass us in space
dan, florida, usa
This is one small step for a take away and one giant leap for a restauraunt for mankind. Message for the Space Station they could be taking orders soon!
Stephen Evans, Kalkara, Malta, G.C.
Can they go ahead and publish the re-entry and landing dialog?
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
" Beijing.... we have a problem".....
graeme green, Middleton, UK
So much for China taking over the world.
