For Sarah Palin, becoming John McCain’s running mate has certainly had its perks. There is the campaign jet, the national celebrity and, it emerged yesterday, the £90,000 wardrobe, hair-dos and make-up about which most hockey moms could only dream.
For anyone wondering if Mrs Palin’s trademark red jackets, the $2,500 (£1,530) Valentino outfit worn for her Republican convention acceptance speech, or even the $3,000 Louis Vuitton handbag that her six-year-old daughter, Piper, was holding on September 11, came from the wardrobe at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, they did not.
The array of couture was provided courtesy of the Republican National Committee’s bank account.
Mrs Palin, who has been extolling the virtues of Joe the Plumber in these times of economic crisis, has had tens of thousands of dollars lavished on her by the committee, including a shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue in St Louis, Missouri ($49,425), and Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis ($75,062).
After her surprise choice as Mr McCain’s running-mate at the end of August, Mrs Palin has been provided with an average of $37,500 a week for clothes, make-up, hair styling, accessories, and even baby kit for her six-month-old son Trig. Such a weekly outlay is more than the average annual salary for a plumber.
The Republicans spent $4,716 on hair and make-up during September, more even than the $400 haircuts that so embarrassed John Edwards, the former Democratic presidential candidate, this year. It is cheap in comparison, though, with the haircut that President Clinton got aboard Air Force One in 1993, which is reported to have cost thousands of dollars.
Before Mrs Palin’s arrival on the Republican ticket, no such expenditures appeared in the national committee’s financial disclosure records. Yet a review of its September reports by Politico, a political website, found a new category – “campaign accessories”. Payments of $789.72 were also made to Barneys New York, and $9,447.71 to Bloomingdale’s.
The McCain campaign initially refused to answer specific questions, including whether it was necessary to spend so much. Hours after the story was posted, however, Tracey Schmitt, a McCain spokeswoman, issued a statement. “With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it is remarkable that we are spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”
Mrs Palin’s hairstyle and wardrobe have been a prime topic in magazine pages and on satirical shows, but it has never been clear where her clothes have come from. One item that appears to predate the new collection is her Kazuo Kawasaki 704 spectacle frames, which cost $350.
There were also a few purchases at Pacifier, a baby store, and Steinlauf & Stoller, suggesting that $295 was spent to help Mrs Palin’s son Trig to join her on the campaign trail.
If the items had been bought by the McCain campaign itself, they would have violated campaign finance rules, which prohibit the use of funds for personal use. However the RNC is perfectly entitled to buy her as large – and costly – a wardrobe as she wants.

I'm courious, does Tracey Schmitt even know what the real issues are? Maybe once she finds out she could share it with, John McCain and Primadonna Palin.
Barbara, Wasilla, USA
Would someone please just wake up and see how she is exploiting her special needs child for a few votes. I am the sister of a downs syndrome brother and all my life I have hated people taking advantage of these special kids. It is a shame she takes advantage of her own child.
barbara, montgomery village, usa
As a mother of a special needs child, I can't help but lament the dollars wasted on a bag for a six year old when the money could have meant so much to any special needs class in any school in the USA. I guess welfare is okay for the Palin family.
andrea, bellingham, usa
Fine, she needs to look presidential (she certainly doesn't sound it). But a $3000 dollar handbag for a 6-year-old? Rest assured, many of us in America see through Palin. She is the window dressing on a crumbling house of failed policies. If she is the future of the Rep.'s, this Independent votes D!
Tyler, Gilbert AZ, USA
I think she looks great, especially after having so many kids.
Dr. A. J. Davies, Broxbourne, UK
who cares, she's now an international figure on camera so needs nice clohtes. Obama used tax payers dollars to fly his whole family to hawaii this year. There is always a differnt standard when it comes to Palin compared to Obama. the media is just too biased this time round.
Louise, Orlando,
How very different from our own Cherie Blair!!
Tom, Huddersfield, UK
You have to question the values & educational of Alaskans to have elected her. Alaskans are paying for the entire Palin family to travel to events that only the Governor should be traveling to. How many working class people take their kids to work and have the employer pick-up the cost? Zero
WGlennon, London, United Kingdom
who says it costs $150k? Michelle Obama manages to look incredible in a $200 dress,
shana, san francisco, United States
It is a fact of our society that looks mean a lot. Why stop at the cost of maintaining Palin's look? The entire cost of the campaign could probably fund an entire 3rd world country's supply of food for a year. This is not a criticism of the Republicans but a criticism of the shallow world we live in
Sharon, London,
So much for 'Joe the Plumber' - I suspect no normal plumber could afford to spend one tenth of that in one year let alone 10 weeks or so.
Mind you I am glad to see that the Republicans are spreading American hard paid taxes around and creating wealth for some very elite clothing companies. Go go.
Simon Ward, Riyadh, KSA
It's all beginning to unravel isn't it? They can fool Joe Six-Pack some of the time... But they can't fool him all of the time! Joe is wide awake now - and knows that those tax breaks for the excessively wealthy won't trickle down to him! They end up in Belize and in designer yatchts and outfits!!
Jimmy, Letchworth Garden City, UK
Are the Americans voting in a beauty contest or a presidential election, I realise it matters little, as the US is ruled by powerful forces that never have recourse to the elective process .
But then what country does.
Eddy, Bury St.Edmunds,
They knew they had to dress her up, because what comes out of her mouth leaves a lot to be desired. This high price for clothes is far from the Joe Six packs and Hockey Moms image she's trying to portray. That's sad that they thought they had to correct her image that much.
Elizabeth, Detroit, USA
37500$ per week is not a remotely justifiable amount of other people's money to spend on clothing. She could have been dressed to near perfection for a third or even less of that.
Spending 3000$ on a handbag for a six year old is just further proof that this was plain rampant spending.
Bart Vandendriessche, Lanaken,
Yes, because all hockey mom's buy their clothes from Louis Vuitton...
Farrukh, Woking,
There is a ludicrous expectation for women to look perfect on the campaign trail and the costs of doing such are far in excess of those incurred by men.
Male presidential candidates can look good in jeans and a shirt if they're in Scranton. No such luck for women. I'm surprised it didn't cost more.
John Swaine, Malta, Malta
Blame TV and the media for that. As well as the American people. Hollywood and our own bloated expectations of Image and what one should look like, talk like and eat. We have a double standard and expect our heroes and leaders to be perfect...at least how they look. Good looking helps.
