Thousands of pilgrims have flocked to a remote jungle in southeast Nepal after a 17-year-old boy whom some believe to be a reincarnation of the Buddha emerged after more than a year in the forest.
Ram Bahadur Bamjan appeared on Monday to preach in a temple in Ratanpur, southeast of Kathmandu. Dubbed “Buddha Boy” by the press, and dismissed as a charlatan by some, the teenager first garnered headlines in 2005 when tens of thousands of devotees travelled to see him as he sat crosslegged amid the roots of a tree for nearly ten months without, it was claimed, food or water.
This week the long-haired Bamjan, attired in a gleaming white cloth, appeared to be in good health when he spoke to his followers about fostering peace and ending discrimination.
He plans to give similar audiences for the next week or so. A police spokesman said: “The whole jungle area where he has appeared has turned into a festival and around 10,000 people came to see him on Monday.”
Many of those have described the experience as amazing and are convinced that he is the reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama, who was born in about 560BC and later became revered as the Buddha.
Several doubts have been raised, however, over the authenticity of Bamjan. During past appearances thousands of pounds were collected from devotees, leading to allegations that he was really a conman. Most damagingly, perhaps, a French journalist filmed Bamjan nibbling on fruit while supposedly midway through a fast; another correspondent found him asleep while he was supposed to be meditating.
In March last year supporters of Bamjan said that he planned to meditate for three years in an underground bunker – an idea he now appears to have thought better of.
There has not been any official statement from Buddhism’s authorities on Bamjan. Min Bahadur Shakya, of the Nagarjuna Institute of Exact Methods in Kathmandu, said: “Meditating without food does not prove that he is reincarnation of Buddha. There is much study needed to be done.”
Dr K. T. S. Sarao, head of Buddhist studies at the University of Delhi, said: “In this part of the world religion incites very strong feelings.
“Science is unable to explain all of the world . . . if you’re asking for my personal opinion, well I’m a rationalist sceptic.”
Path to Enlightenment
— Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born into a royal family in about 560BC in what is now Nepal
— Having learnt that death was an unavoidable fate he decided to live as a homeless holy man
— After adopting the Middle Way between luxury and ascetism, the Buddha, who was married and had a child, achieved Enlightenment while meditating beneath the Bodhi tree
— For the next 45 years he taught disciples to attain enlightenment
— The Mahabodhi Temple and tree are now a pilgrimage site

Most of you readers are forgetting the VOW of the Bhodisattva
Even if one has "Attained to enlightenment, this person promises to take on another body to speak the truth of the enlightened one UNtill all have heard these truths. This is the Ultimate act of compassion.
Marc, Bangna, Thailand
Look I don't know who he is.But that does not matter.
The thing is
"He is actually doing something supernatural."
"He is sincerely trying to learn the secrets of life."
"He is not running behind anything.Every thing is coming to him."
"He is enjoying what we just dare not even to try."
HE IS TRUE.
Suraj Prakash, kharagpur, INDIA
It does not matter whether he is Buddha or not !! what is of import is that he has been able to reach a stage where enlightened souls reach !! The fact that he is able to meditate (If really true !!) at such a young age is a point of amazement !!
Amit, Pune, India
Even if he's not, people will still follow him as he's following the steps of Lord Buddha and now a days there's more violence then what Lord Buddha believed in. Maybe that's the reason that he started to truly follow him, to spread the message of PEACE.. or maybe he is the reincarnation of Buddha!
Bella, Dubai, UAE
Realized souls have explained that just attaining Nirvana will not help the world and the living beings on it. Buddha, Christ and Ramakrishna after realizing ultimate Truth managed to come back to lead the world towards righteousness. Boy's message is what matters, is he an incarnation is secondary
Rajju , Manhattan Beach,
he can not be said to be the coming of Maitreya, future Buddha as that occurs only when ALL the original teachings have faded and dissapeared from our world system. as we are fortunate enough live in a time where the precious Dharma is still being taught, he can not be said to be Maitreya
Jon, Hull, England
Matthew from Edinburgh - I laughed out loud! On a serious note though: Lyone and Vince, in Mahayana Buddhism, although someone has reached enlightenment, they can still return led by the altruistic wish to help others. This is the way of the Bodhisattva. If his message is peaceful, then good on him!
Esther, Kigali, Rwanda
Vince is correct. According to the teachings of Siddhartha Buddha, he will never have a reincarnation: because once an enlightened being attains Nirvana there are no more rebirths. But so what? We will all become buddha beings eventually, maybe this boy is one. Maybe not. But peace,etc-all good
Lyone S Fein, Newark, USA
Buddha did not believe in a god so who actually does the re-incarnation business? Who do Buddhists pray to? Why the demons etc.? He obviously had a method for getting an inner peace, nirvana,, but to infer that this is some kind of heaven is baseless. Again, no god, so who made the 'heaven'?
William Garrett, Harrow,
You question his credibility based on him collecting money during sermons? Ever sat through a Sunday sermon in a Christian church? I accept your logical arguments, not your hypocritical.
Erik, London,
Can we all just remember that none of this actually means anything? He's not a reincarnation of anyone, he's just someone who is just trying to see how much he can get away with...
Matthew Lancey, Sydney, Australia
I understand the knowledge of Buddhism is important here. It never be reincarnation of Lord Buddha(presently known as Gauthama) But possibly be the birth of "Maithree Buddha". Because to become enlightened, a person should develop lot & lots of Decepline. This person may be practicing it.Never know.
Ruwan, London, UK
Times staff, can you send someone over there who speaks the lingo so we can get a transcript? "He spoke to his followers about fostering peace and ending discrimination" - and said what?
Julian Morrison, Reading, UK
"...impossible in the Buddhist concept for the historical Buddha to have a reincarnation"
Impossible? As a Buddha wouldn't he be free to do so? Or is Nirvana so total that he is even beyond freedom, choice and action?
In anycase modern buddhism is spiritualised atheism. The end is the same.
Greg Lorriman, Leatherhead, UK
sounds like mickey mouse fiction to me
Hamish, London,
Is that Yoko Ono?
Brendan Woodhouse, Nottingham, United Kingdom
He's probably just going through a phase
Matthew, Edinburgh, UK
As a definition of Buddhahood is the attainment of Nirvana and release from rebirth it is impossible in the Buddhist concept for the historical Buddha to have a reincarnation. Therefore Buddha Boy can not possibly be such a reincarnation.
Vince, Reading, England
