Indian police today discovered and defused explosives at Mumbai’s main railway station that appear to have been left behind by the Islamic militants who struck across the city last week.
The bomb squad defused the two 4kg (8lb) bombs, which were similar to others left by the militants, while searching through 150 bags at Chhatrapati Shivaji station today.
"This is part of the same consignment which the terrorists had brought on Wednesday night when they were attacking and running helter-skelter. Some of the material had been left behind," said K.P. Raghuvashi, the city's anti-terrorism chief.
He said that the situation was "under control". It was not immediately clear why the bombs had not been found before the station was re-opened last Thursday.
The discovery of the bombs came after Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, arrived in Delhi and urged India and Pakistan to co-operate in investigating last week's attacks.
Amid intensifying diplomatic efforts, US Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also flew into Islamabad to press Pakistani leaders not to let tensions with India detract from their campaign against Islamist militants on the Afghan border.
