CHINA responded with characteristic caution yesterday to the North Korean missile launches, issuing only a mild and veiled rebuke.

As North Korea’s only important ally, Beijing finds itself in a dilemma. Its statement was carefully calibrated to convey its irritation — if not downright anger — without alienating a neighbour that may already have developed nuclear weapons.

Liu Jianchao, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, said: “We are seriously concerned about the events. We hope the relevant sides will remain calm and exercise restraint, do more that is beneficial to peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and in North-East Asia, and refrain from actions that will increase tensions and complicate the situation.”

The missile launch is embarrassing for Beijing, coming just days after the Prime Minister Wen Jiabao added his voice to the chorus warning Kim Jong Il not to launch the missiles. Chinese analysts said international uproar over the tests would make it even more difficult for China to juggle its North Korea ties with its hopes for smooth relations with Washington and its partners.
