Taleban stages mass attack

The attacks, the most serious show of Taleban strength in two years, come just days after John Reid, the Defence Secretary, confirmed that 3,300 British paratroopers would be stationed in the volatile southern province.

The attacks, which started when Afghan police went searching for militants in Sangeen district, were so serious that coalition A10 ground attack planes where called in to try to subdue the fighting.

At one stage the deputy governor of the province, Haji Mullah Amir Muhammad Akhundzada, and his convoy of 100 Afghan police were surrounded by more than 200 rebels. The deputy governor managed to escape only after 200 reinforcements arrived and their convoy burst through Taleban lines.

The attack comes the day after a governor in the neighbouring province of Nimroz confirmed that an Iraqi and three Pakistani insurgents had been arrested.
