• Pakistani police put a firebrand Islamic leader under house arrest and detained about 150 others as protests against cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad continued.

  Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, the founder of the militant Lashkar-e-Taiba group fighting Indian rule in Kashmir, was detained in Lahore to stop him giving a sermon on the controversy after Friday prayers.

  About 70 people were held in Multan, 30 in Karachi, 24 in Faisalabad and about a dozen in Lahore in a crackdown on potential troublemakers.

  Denmark temporarily shut its embassy in Islamabad and Pakistan recalled its envoy from Copenhagen as the violent protests entered a fifth day.

  Bill Clinton, the former US President, speaking in Islamabad, said that printing the cartoons had been a mistake but added that violent protests by Muslims had wasted a chance to build bridges with the West.
