A British woman was raped while on holiday in Thailand, two weeks after the rape and murder of backpacker Katherine Horton.
The 29-year-old woman, thought to be from Liverpool, was allegedly attacked by a young local man after accepting a lift on his motorbike. Instead of taking her back to her hotel in Pattaya, the 19-year-old man drove her to a secluded spot where he raped her.
A spokesman for Pattaya police, Major Apimuk Amnartmankong, said a 19-year-old local man had been arrested in connection with the rape. The suspect, who is due to appear in court on Wednesday, faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Police said the alleged rape happened on Saturday night in Pattaya, a beach resort about 70 miles south east of Bangkok, which is known for its sex industry and high crime rate.
The victim was waiting for a taxi when a man pulled up on his motorcycle and offered her a ride, which she accepted. The woman told police that the man stopped the motorcycle on a dark road, dragged her into an area of bushes and raped her.
The latest attack comes only two weeks after 21-year-old Katherine Horton, from Cardiff, was raped and murdered in Koh Samui. Two Thai fishermen have admitted attacking Miss Horton and are expected to be sentenced on Wednesday. Thailand's Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, has called for Bualoi Posit, 23, and Wichai Somkhaoyai, 24, to be executed. Miss Horton’s mother Elizabeth says she believes her daughter’s killers should be jailed for life instead of executed.
Miss Horton was staying on the island of Koh Samui with university friend Ruth Adams. In the evening of New Year’s Day, she was attacked as she spoke to her mother on her mobile phone. Mrs Horton heard a scream before the line went dead. Her daughter’s battered body was found floating in Lamai Bay the following day by a jet-skier.
Miss Horton’s funeral is to take place in Cardiff tomorrow.
