MEMBERS of a peaceful Chinese spiritual movement say that more than 1,500 of its supporters have been detained in the run-up to the Olympic Games and that one of them, a popular folk singer, has died in custody.
The arrests have been carried out against Falun Gong, a group that practises traditional meditation and exercise. The Chinese government banned Falun Gong in 1999, calling it “an evil cult”.
The official media have not reported the arrests, but there has been lively discussion among music fans on Chinese websites over the fate of the singer Yu Zhou, 42. “F*** authority. Another beautiful soul has left the world,” commented one distraught fan.
Falun Gong representatives said Yu was arrested on January 26 while returning home from a concert in Beijing. His family were called to the Qinghe district emergency centre on February 6 to view his body, which was covered in a white sheet.
Yu’s relatives were told that he had died of diabetes or as the result of a hunger strike. They replied that he had never suffered from diabetes and refused official demands for an immediate cremation, the group said.
Yu won a following among young Chinese for his mellow folk ballads. His group, Xiao Juan and Residents from the Valley, released two successful CDs and appeared on the Phoenix television channel.
Yu was a graduate of Beijing University. He married Xu Na, 40, a poet and painter who was imprisoned between 2001 and 2006 for her association with Falun Gong. The group said she was also arrested on January 26 and remains in custody.
It was not possible to verify Falun Gong’s allegations. Officers at the Tongzhou district detention centre would not respond to telephone inquiries.
Friends and colleagues of Yu said they have lost contact with the parents of the couple, whose homes were said to be under police surveillance.
However, a member of Yu’s band, contacted by telephone, said in response to a question about his reported death: “It is not suitable to answer this question. As you know, if I answer it I will be in trouble.”
While global attention has focused on the uprising in Tibet, the renewed attack on Falun Gong shows that the state security apparatus is determined to crush any domestic opposition before the Beijing Games start in August.
“It is increasingly clear that much of the current wave of repression is occurring not in spite of the Olympics but actually because of the Olympics,” said Amnesty International, which has detailed numerous arrests and the harassment of Chinese civil rights activists.
Now operating from exile, Falun Gong said that at least 1,878 of its adherents had been arrested since January 1. The detainees included 156 people in Beijing. Of these, 26 were residents of the Chaoyang and Shunyi districts, which host Olympic venues.
Falun Gong was founded in 1992 by Li Hongzhi, a former government grain clerk who is said to have achieved enlightenment. At first it attracted little official attention. As it grew in numbers, however, the group clashed with the authorities and a ferocious crackdown was launched.
The US State Department estimates that at least 100,000 Falun Gong members have been imprisoned, locked up in psychiatric hospitals or sent to “reeducation” camps, where they are made to denounce Li.
The group itself says several thousand of its followers have died in prison as a result of torture and beatings.

The CCP proves once again it that doesn't care about human rights of Chinese citizens or due process of law. The persecution of falun gong believers is unacceptable under int'l & PRC law. Many of these practitioners are sent to re-education through labor prison camps by the police w/o a trial.

It's sad. The only news sources the Chinese people have in China are biased by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) With such a propaganda tool, a totalitarian government can spread all the lies and hate filled messages it wants to about Falun Gong, Tibet, democracy, the sudent massacre in 1989, etc...
Jerome Gagnon, Montreal, Canada
Also as Falun Gong is practiced on every continent in the World and by almost every race of people I dont think it counts as being racist. Li Hongzhi has never made any demarcation to colour caste or creed. Li Hongzhi also states that homosexuals are to be shown the same compassion as any other sentient being but practitioners cannot practice it. In this respect he is no different from any other upright religious or cultivation way in history.
Also Falun Gong was based in China, but due to obvious reasons relocated to the US. I wonder if any of the Falun Gong issues over the last 9 years has anything to do with the survey carried out by the CCP in 1998 which showed that Li Hongzhi and Falun Gong were more popular with the Chinese population than Jiang Zemin and his CCP dictatorship. Anyone for a despot?
Please note I am not anti Chinese, I love China. I am anti CCP two different things. China is civilisation that is over 5,000 years old and was once the envy of the entire world, the CCP was formed in 1927 by the Russians (that was the sneakiest foreign ideological invasion and conquest of a country in history) and has systematically lied and cheated the proud nation of China for its own gain.

Excuse me? Its been proved that the Falun Gong self-immolation incident was staged? No it hasnt.
The Chinese say one thing, the Falun Gong in New York say another. Perhaps you should have a chat with Time magazine if you think it proved:
"Time considered "implausible" that the act was set up by the Government, stating that Falun Gong had been caught off-guard by the act, and the leadership's damage control after the immolations proved to be inadequate."
Matt, Hereford, UK
It is suprising how many Chinese are spreading propaganda on english websites lately ... looks almost as if it were something organised...
Kamil, Krakov,
We can see message from China here support CCP's crackdown of Falun Gong. Just like some events in Chinese communities which support Beijing Olympic torch recently.
It is weird, because in China, if you have word "FA LUN" in your message, your message will be blocked, why those guys' message does not be blocked? The only conclusion is those guys are not normal Chinese people.

The Chinese communist regime's propaganda still runs rife online. The self immolation incident in Tiananmen Sq in 2001 has been exposed years ago as being staged by this regime itself. It's also what this regime used as its biggest propaganda tool within it's all encompassing propaganda campaign to try and demonize Falun Gong.
However, this shouldn't surprise anyone who knows some of the history of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) as it has launched such irrational and lethal campaigns regularly throughout its history of enforcing its one party rule in China behind the barrel of a gun - The Great Cultural Revolution, The Great Leap Forward..."3 anti" and "5 anti" movements...Tiananmen Sq massacre in 1989...and on it goes with the persecution of Falun Gong.
However, the CCP's lies are so big it makes it hard for people who don't know the real facts to distinguish between what is true or false. Why doesn't the CCP allow independent investigators and media the freedom & access to see?

Its been known for a long time now that the group of people who staged the suicide act in Tiananmen Square were not Falun Gong practitiioners and that the event was actually staged by the Chinese Communist Party to turn people's opinion against Falun Gong, this has been verified by several different media around the world. The CCP has been using everything in their power to make people believe their crackdown on a group of innocent people is justified. Whatever Mr. Yu Zhou's beliefs were he did not deserve to be killed for them, neither do any of the other thousands of other Falun Gong practitioners who have also lost their lives.
As a Medical Doctor I have been documenting over the past three years the horrible practice of forced organ harvesting taking place in China and we have confirmed that the main source of these organs come from Falun Gong practitioners! Freedom of belief is one of the most basic of human rights! This is not the way to treat any group of people.
Damon N, New York, New York
my father is practicing Fulungon from last year becaues of unbearable of sick of Insomnia. Now he won't kowdow in acestors rituals because it is said that practisers of Falungon is higher than dead and will frighten the dead ancestors to take part in the respect rituals. what a nonsense. I can't persuade him.
I was heard from a colleage. His wife's young sister believed in Falungon and throw all beloved singers' portraits. and one day she said Teacher Li will get her and then jumpt from upstairs herself and broken her logs. She wouldn't go to hospital according to the rules of Falungon and at last was sent forcely to hospital by her family members.
So I think Falungon maybe is a few good to health if only practise his physical practise. but it is very deadly if you learn its theory at same times.

We don't imprison Mormons in the US. I can't say that we treat everyone fairly, but the example of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints given to the Chinese public is ridiculous. Did you know that we had a Mormon presidential candidate in our recent Republican primary? He was the 3rd most popular candidate.
Also, the Falung Gong are racist? Well, I guess you should imprison or kill all the Tibetans to show them how racism is wrong.
Gage, Pittsburgh, PA, USA
The highest profile Falun Gong event in China was not mentioned in this report. It involved a numbers of followers who staged a suicide act by setting fire to themselves in Tiananmen Square, all at the same time. Several children aged around 12 were involved, ordered by their parents to take their own lives. I support the authority's outlawing of this backward cult.
William, Beijing, China
China take the same action on Fa Lun Gong cult as US to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). If you accuse China, you accuse US either.
TF Cheng, Hong Kong,
Falungong is 100pct cult that must be banned. In fact we chinese support the government'effort to crack down falungong which induced so many young Chinese to committ suicide.
Tian Qingyou, Tianjin, China
My most sincere condolences to Yu Zhou's wife Xu Na and to the rest of his family. This is very sad news and also very suspicious. That a man can go into prison healty, yet die while detained.....very sad. China would be far better banning violent islamic religion than harrasing peace loving people of China who Christianity or who are members of Falun Gong.
My prayers to the people of China. We (Westerners) may be far away, but our thoughts are with you.
Maria Anderson, Brisbane, Australia
Many cults claim persecution. Falung Gong is a racist homophobic sect with its HQ in USA ( surprise surprise) Maybe Michael Sheridan should also complain about teh peace loving Fundamentlist Mormons who are being persecuted in America for the religios belief of having sex with children
Yeech
