When the young dolphin was rescued from the Adriatic Sea, distressed and bruised, she was nurtured back to health by a dedicated trainer who took responsibility for her care.
Now the trainer is dead, the victim of a frenzied attack by her neighbour — and the dolphin, apparently, is dying of a broken heart.
The extraordinary story of love emerged yesterday as keepers at the Oltremare water park in Riccione appealed for international help to save the life of their dolphin.
Tamara Monti, 37, was stabbed to death at her flat in Riccione by Alessandro Doto, 35, who lived next door with his elderly parents.
He told police after his arrest that he had been driven mad by the incessant barking of Ms Monti’s two dogs — a basset hound and a mongrel — which she left in her flat all day while working at the dolphinarium.
Yesterday keepers at the water park said that they had lost not only “a marvellous trainer” but were also in danger of losing Mary G, the dolphin that Ms Monti had reared and cared for after it was found two years ago in the harbour at Ancona.
The dolphin is refusing her daily diet of milk and squid and has lost 50kg (110lb) since Ms Monti’s murder. Her weight has fallen to just 160kg (350lb) and she has failed to respond to medication for a gastric infection. Ms Monti’s fiancé, Robert Gojceta, has taken charge of the dolphin’s care but has been unable to revive her.
Leandro Stanzani, director of the water park, said that Ms Monti had become Mary G’s “substitute mother”.
“The relationship between a dolphin and its trainer is always special, but this time it was especially close” he said. “Tamara was constantly stroking Mary, who would nuzzle her cheek.” In an attempt to save the young dolphin from starvation, keepers have introduced an older dolphin called Pele into her aquarium, hoping that they will strike up a friendship and encourage her to eat. But their plan does not appear to be working. Police said Ms Monti, who was struck at least 20 times in the throat and face by her assailant as she was returning from the shops, had been planning to move because of “repeated altercations” with her neighbours over her dogs. Police said that Doto, who confessed to the killing, had been found still standing over the body “as if in a trance” with the bloodstained knife in his hand.
The murder was one of a series of killings arising from “neighbour rage” in Italy, including the murder last December of four people — including a two-year-old boy — by a couple who lived next door at Erba, near Lake Como, and complained of “constant noise at all hours”.
Police said that 850,000 cases a year in Italy involving arguments between neighbours in blocks of flats ended up in court. Helpers Dolphin Assisted Therapy is used to help children suffering from a disability Source: agencies

I had always heard that a broken heart can kill a person but I never knew it could kill animals as well. This is a sad story. It truly is heartbreaking.

I am so touched by this story. As an animal lover ( with a barking cocker spaniel) I am so moved and touched. What can we do for this dolphin? We need to help!! Please update us!!!

Hi
I read this story in The Metro in Dublin & was so touched by it I was unable to part with the paper. I have now cut out the story to keep. I am a Reiki healer & so are many of my friends, I will ask them to send Mary G healing. It's so sad we live in a world where human life is so dispensable. I have been thinking of Mary G & praying for her. Perhaps we should all join together across the world & pray for her. In the past I have always had an answer to my prayers & most recently when I prayed for my nephew who has a very serious heart problem. His condition improved with prayers from those I know.

Poor baby!!!
Has anyone been able to help you at all in this matter?. Has Mary G started to eat again?
I was just watching a story about a dolphin baby lost from it's mother in Texas. It was attacked by a shark and not expected to live. But with LOT'S of help, like the love and care this beautiful poor woman gave to Mary G, the baby lived and is now grown.
I wish I could be of some help.

Hi, i wrote before, and would like to know if anyone has an update on Mary. Thank you!!!!
Amyel, Granada, Spain
Does anyone have a child with marine mammal experience that could possibly interact with Mary G. under supervision? Perhaps the lightheartedness of a child could bring some happiness to this poor lost soul. Is Mary G. showing any interest in Pele? What is Pele's demeanor towards Mary G?
Stacey, Key Largo, FL

Its really sad but its also true. My opinion and experience from my life is that people and animals with broken heart need someone with big heart and with just a little pity for others and someone who can listen, like me.
Dejan, LJUBLJANA, Slovenia
As a people and animal lover and advocate I send my condolences to you, all of Tamara Monti's family and friends (including her beautiful animal kingdom).
If Mary G were mine to look after I would try: wearing clothing, cologne, anything really of Miss Monti's as already suggested. I would also wallow with her Basset Hound and AKA Mongrel, then approach Mary G. Even perhaps take her canines around Mary G.
I would speak to Mary G. as if she were the child of Miss Monti's. Telling her whatever you deem Miss Monti would say. Literally speak it to her..
If there is still too much grieving to overcome, contact a local Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner to help. JSJ is a beautiful healing therapy for humans and animal alike.
My prayers are with you all.

What an incredible story!!!! AND DOLPHINS CAN SMELL!!!! They are all great ideas, children, clothes, but above all, all the affection in the world and sweet words so that she know we all love her. And, hopefully, someday soon, scientists will believe animals have more feelings than they are willing to admit. After all, if the admit to this, what becomes of them? No more cruel research on animals?
Amyel, Granada, Spain
Make shure you look after them. How are you doing now?
CATHARINE DE MORGAN, london,
This story breaks my heart. I hope Mary G makes it. Its so sad to think of what this world is comming to.
Sarah, Tampa, FL
dolphins cant smell
poor thing :(
Margarita, Florida,
This story is enough to break anybody's heart. I wonder if the aquarium could try what farmers do when lambs lose their mothers - have one of the other keepers wear Tamara's wet suit - or maybe try wearing some of her clothes, or perfume so Mary G could smell her?
Christine Rudge, Deal, Kent UK
How sweet and what a sad and touching story.. just wish there was something i could do to help
Rebecca, UK, UK
its really toching
jenny, brighton,
Having experienced grief myself, I would advise her trainers to give Mary G a dose of 30c homeopathic Ignatia.
It won't do her any harm and may well help her to deal with her grief.
Margaret Morton, Workington, United Kingdom
It just shows that love is blind and very beatuitful
Barbie, Ca, us
I wish I could write to the aquarium or to Leandro Stanzani directly. Hope they would read this posting. I would suggest to have Mary G exposed regularly to young children, maybe even have children swimming and playing within a controlled envoironment, of course, to make sure the children will be able to do so in safe condition. I believe Mary G will feel that so many people care about her and will definitely understand that is important to continue her life in the way that Monti wants.
Geoffrey Lee, Cupertino, California, USA
That's very sad to hear. Just shows you dolphins are more intelligent that most people give them credit for.
R. Dows, louth, uk
Try putting a baby Dolphin in with her - this might just give her life a spark; perhaps appeal to her innate maternal instincts.
Carolyn Finks, san angelo, tx
A very tragic story
A> T . Martin, Warsaw, Warsaw
A tragedy of course, but also a reminder to us all that the highest virtues of love and affection are not something over which humanity has dominion. The capacity for tenderness and concern for others is a trait which is inherent in animals. Nothing could be more reprehensible than the way we humans selfishly torture, slaughter and exploit animals, as if they don't have feelings and do not suffer the nightmarish depths of physical pain. Perhaps when we observe the heartfulness of other creatures, such as is obvious in the case of this heartbroken dolphin, we might reconsider our thoughtless savage brutality against all animals.
