MADRID The Spanish Government was preparing last night to release an Eta prisoner on hunger strike, fearing that he is on the brink of death after 114 days without food.
If confirmed, the decision to free Iñaki de Juana Chaos will spark uproar among victims of the Basque separatist group.
More than 75,000 people rallied in Madrid last weekend to demand the continued imprisonment of the convicted killer. At a rival rally in Bilbao held by his supporters, several people were injured by police.
Cadena Ser radio reported that the Interior Ministry was in final consultations to allow de Juana to serve the last year of his sentence, for making terrorist threats, at home under police supervision.
He has already completed an 18-year sentence for leading a cell that killed 25 soldiers and police in the 1980s.
His supporters said yesterday that he would fall into a coma if his blood sugar dropped lower.

I'm astonished looking how easy is to give the opinion without knowing anything. Does anybody know what Al Qaeda is?
I recomend you all to watch the next video in which Mr. Gallaway explains what a terrorist is.

I wish u all what your friend wish to those spanish people that doesnt think like him.
torerosevillanaspaella, europeisdifferent,
So, when is the BBC and Times going to refer to the 1980s IRA as a "seperatist group"?
While were at it, shall we call the Iraqi insurgents "Freedom Fighters"?
Pete, Cov,
ETA is no better than the IRA or Al Qaeda. The end.
Starling, Lancaster,
Please try to understand that ETA = Terrorist group = Al Quaeda. Do you think that the people that bomb the Metro in London are a "religious group"? So please be serious.
Manuel, Madrid, España
what one can achieve with a simple hunger strike! being a killer or not.
Marc, Madrid, Spain
Hi:
You see, this terrorist will not die for his hunger strike as i tell you only two days ago.
Please Mr. Grant. don't speak in that manner. We the Spanish have suffered and will suffer (undoubtely) many many much. Many children Mr. Grant, children do you understand? have died for those killers. And they are only killers. And you the British have got many dark episodes in Ulster behaving like a third world, bananna republic. And those terrorist shooted in Gibraltar by your secrent agents? Please keep silence. You've hurt millions of spanish people.
Regards
Carlos Almarza, MADRID, ESPAÑA
It is not so easy, after self determination nasionalists will ask for other regions to joint them as Navarra

remenber that the juana is now in prision for giving opinion in GARA. just one excuse for not be free.
(sorry for my english)
itziar, bilbo, basque country
I think that it is the worst idea of this government. It is a terrible act, 25 people killed, 3000 years at the beginning, 20 years at the end. He is free, we are the prisioners.
Don Pelayo, Asturias, Spain
Miguel Angel you seem to forget the fact that the Spanish electorate voted this government into power in protest at the previous administration's mishandling of the Madrid bombings, with that simple act the Spanish people emboldened terrorists of all persuasions to continue their deadly campaigns.
john, kuala lumpur,
Can somebody remove Roy Grant's stupid comment. He does not know ETA are terrorists and if you think murderers should be set free, please free all remaining IRA prisoners and stop chasing so called muslim terrorists. I am a foreigner in Spain and Spain is certainly not a Banana Republic.
Marc, Madrid, Spain
Self determination under threats? Just because they are aiming at us with guns? We should deal with good people, not with killers. This is not understood by foreign people like Mr Grant. The Basque Coutry, or any other Spanish community is much more autonomous from central power than Northern Ireland or Scotland, and this kind of independence has been achieved through dialogue. What have British rulers done to give more autonomy to Scotland or Northern Ireland? Don't you think you should follow the Spanish procedure? Mr Grant, you should know us better before giving your opinion about such a complicated question: blackmailing is not the solution, perhaps it the best one in your bananna republic, but it shouldn't be in ours.
Yeyo, Murcia, Spain
You have to put things into perspective of the world we live in today. Tens of thousands of innocent Iraqs have been killed by UK and US forces in Iraq (unintentionally of course). The Spanish government is trying to move forward in the process of establshing peace with ETA. This is an unconventional way of doing it but if it eventually leads to a stop in terrorist activities in Spain maybe it is worth the price.
A. Sinclair, Copenhagen, Denmark
Once again a newspaper from outside Spain makes the incredible mistake calling ETA a Separatist Group. THEY ARE A BY UN RECOGNIZED TERRORIST ORGANISATION. But apparently the Brits see no link between the Democratic Separatist Group IRA. Fantastic guys!! Keep your spirits up in supporting terrorists and in the same time trashing Blair for his war on terrorism.
Marc, Madrid, Spain
Amazing to call ETA a separatist movement, where it is an UN recognized TERRORIST ORGANISATION. Well done English Press. This will create comments like the one from mister Roy Grant, with his stupid comment. Apparently he prefers to free any IRA prisoner and so called muslim-terrorist. Well thought, let's free the killers and imprison the good ones!!!
Marc, Madrid, Spain
A new victory of the terror organisation. Prime Minister Zapatero and his lads must feel very "proud" as they have just showed their cowardice once again and proved their hurrying wishes to "end the conflict" to be true, which, after their policies and thoughts, would not mean a defeat of terrorism in any case.
Jose Maria Montoya, Madrid, Spain
What a shame. Zapatero is the worst disgrace that have happened to Spain in many, many years.
Luis Carlos, Zaragoza, Spain
Luis Parra, Zaragoza, Spain
Hey Roy, nice comment!
Especially coming from a citizen of the country that let Bobby Sands die in prison, who still refuses to return North Ireland and Gibraltar to their rightful owners or where kids are allowed to kill each other in gang wars...
Jose Antonio, Madrid, Spain
Although hard to admit, a 3 year jail sentence for having written a couple of articles on a news paper seems appropiate. An 18 year effective sentence for having killed 25 persons, does not seem appropiate... but that is not his fault, but rather the politicians who voted in parliament for such a legal system that admits for people like that to get away with such light sentences. I am always courious that NO POLITICIAN IN THE RIGHT, CENTER OF LEFT HAS EVER BLAMED HIMSELF FOR VOTING SUCH LAWS. Wouldn't it be nice if those politicians went on to serve the remainder of the sentence that this terrorist rightly deserves.
Guillermo, Madrid,
All peace processes are painful but necessary. The peace process in Spain is no different to Sth Africa, Nth Ireland or East Timor to mention a few of the most recent peace processes. There will never be reconciliation and healing in a divided 'pueblo'. Think of the 'losers' (many members of my family) in the Spanish Civil War. Who was held accountable for their loses, displacenment and grief and they were the 'goodies'? Once again a pluralist historical memory will be the judge and not hysteria and bitterness. That's what democracy is all about,,,,,,,, And the worst Spanish Government!!! Its probably one of the most progressive in Europe if not the world.
Andere Orive, Soria, Spain
This dude is not ashamed. He has been found in the bed of the hospital having "intimate contacts" with his girlfriend in the last weeks twice. is this a real hunger strike?
A very serious situation is happening in Spain from the attacks of 11-M. The entire world needs to know it.
XimPag, Palma de Mallorca, Spain

XimPag, Palma de Mallorca, Spain
A good thing to do. The sooner the Spanish government give the Basque people their right to self determination the better. It seems as though the people of Spain are still, too often, behaving like a third world, bananna republic.
Roy Grant, London, England
I feel embarrassed to be Spanish with this kind of goverment, this beast killed 25 people and now he is free, less than one year per person....the socialist party and the president Zapatero are accesory in this issue
What a shame!!!
miguel angel, madrid, spain
An absolute disgrace from the worst Spanish government (by difference) in the democratic period. If this is democracy......
Jonty, Zaragoza, Spain
