Iñaki de Juana Chaos has long provoked volcanic feelings in Spain. The 51-year-old former head of Eta’s “Madrid cell” was one of the most violent and committed members of the armed Basque separatist group during the 1980s.
His attacks included machinegunning a car carrying three soldiers, killing a rear-admiral and planting a car bomb that ended the lives of 12 policemen. A US citizen also lost his life when he was caught in a bomb blast by de Juana’s cell.
Another member of the cell, who later repented, once described how de Juana would personally select the victims and pick which members would shoot them. Even then, he said, de Juana would sometimes appear on the scene in a white cap and sunglasses to rake the vehicle with machine-gun fire.
After he was caught in 1987, de Juana was sentenced to 3,000 years in jail for his role in 25 killings. But under sentencing guidelines then in force, he had to serve only 18 years and was due to be freed about two years ago. Other Eta prisoners have been released by previous governments, but none has quite managed to acquire the notoriety of de Juana.
In 1990 police foiled an escape plot by him worthy of a James Bond film. Collaborators were caught in the final stages of a plan to fly a helicopter painted with Red Cross colours into the high-security prison where he was being held.
His fellow conspirators had taken helicopter flying lessons and secured a high-speed dinghy for his escape.
Throughout the decade stories appeared in the Spanish press that further fuelled his notoriety. In 1997 authorities intercepted a letter in which he expressed his joy at seeing the televised funeral of two Seville politicians — a married couple — murdered by Eta. The following year he reportedly asked the director of the prison for champagne and prawns to celebrate the murder of another politician.
De Juana is also one of the few identifiable faces of Eta, listed as a terrorist group by the US and the EU. On the few occasions that they have appeared in videos, Eta leaders have worn sinister-looking masks and berets.
To Eta’s victims, who are organised into a powerful political force, de Juana is an especially hateful character. As one of the group’s former hardliners, he is also a potent symbol for jailed Eta members, who still wield considerable influence over the group and inspire new recruits.
Once he is free to walk the street in something over a year’s time, where will he go?
He has said that he wants to dedicate himself to writing, but he is unlikely to fade into obscurity in the Basque country. Far-right figures have threatened to kill him and many Basque towns will not want a notorious killer in their midst.

Some people should remember how ETA kidnapped two Popular Party militants to force the Popular party goverment to put ETA militants in prisons close to the Basque country. One (Miguel Angel Blanco, 29) was killed in July 1997, and arose an unprecedented anti-ETA protest movement in Spain. The second (Jose Ortega Lara) could be rescued by the police after more than one year kidnapping.
The goverment had the power to lawfully concede ETA's petitions, but did not give in.
Instead, Zapatero's goverment, set before the choice of rigurously apply the law to a serial killer, or appease the terrrorists, has chosen the line that both humiliates most the victims -and victims of ETA could be any of us-, and he thinks best suites his political plans of what he calls "peace".

Partido Popular who calls for the end of this government has set fee 10 eta prisoners betweet 1997 & 1999 for health issues.
e. g. Esteban Esteban Nieto who killed 17 police, detained in 1987 and condamed to more than 3.000 year, was sent home in 1999 and died a few months later .
Miguel Sarasqueta Zubiarrementeria left prison after a cerebral bleeding altough he had to serve a 90 year sentence.
... they dont want to solvethe bask problem, they only want to win the ellections and dont mind misleading the public ... 29 % in spain still believe eta was behind the madrid atocha bombings ....need to say more ?

ETA is not an "armed separatist group", it is a terrorist group that has so far killed 937 people.
David, Madrid, Spain
It is a shame that one of the most cruel terrorists has managed to make the government set him free by his hunger strike. He might die, Zapatero says so we must help him stay alive. But are we forgetting that it was only himself -nobody from ETA asked him to start a hunger strike- that generated this situation? What will happen then when other terrorists start to "blackmail" the government by new hunger strikes in the future? And what about the rest of the criminals that are now in prison, will they have the chance to go out as De Juana Chaos? Is this justice?
David, Madrid, Spain
First, it would be better if Times hasn´t publicity the fake photo of killer. This serial killer has been fucking & drinking with his girfriend last weekend, at the same time you said he was crying on hes death-bed... But it don´t seems care the director & journalist of The Times.
When you say: "far right figures have threatened to kill him", you really joke. Perhaps you talk about the last socialist government, that one of Felipe González, because the only killers in Spain are ETA terrorist (not your invented "armed Basque separatist group"), and -in the past- the terrorist group of the socialist named GAL, who killed 27 persons (whenever is not too much: ETA has killed a thousend innocent people, and this Anibal Leckter, 25 persons with his hands).
The revenge is for the terrorist of ETA or Al-Qaeda; our victims -like the british victims- are just loocking for justice, thats all. But it´s impossible with our prime minister Zapatero, the worst politician we had in all our history
José Donís Català, Madrid, Spain
Previous government installed a law (Anti Terrorist Act) which prevents murderers to get out early as de Juana, current government has let this go. As a Dutch immigrant I cannot understand that a killer is set free. Thather let IRA killers die when they had their hunger strike. Here the Government gave in with the excuse of being a humanitary act. He was about to die. De Juana left the hospital in Madrid yesterday and WALKED!!!! into a hospital in San Sebastian. Funny that he capable to walk? Also he has had his private moments with his girlfriend in the hospital. Does somebody who robbed a car have the same privileges? No, and I suppose they want it as well, via a hunger strike.

Just another example of the politically correct cowards who now lord it over their citizens in all the EU countries. Capital punishment? you must be joking , just think of all the European politicians and their lackeys who would have a good cry and be in need of counselling for the rest of their completely forgettable lives not to mention the silly court of justice in the Hague.

"Far right figures have threatened to kill him". Oh, have they? Who? When? How? First thing I've heard, and hardly representative of public opinion in Spain. Victims have distinguished themselves here by demanding justice, not revenge, and never taking revenge into their own hands. Hypocritical minister for the Interior Alfredo Rubalcaba would have us believe he has taken the decision to move De Juana out of humanitarian concerns, perhaps hoping we have forgotten his own past as member of the socialist government which operated a terrorist group to kill ETA members and sympathizers. What a wonderful minefield Spain is for the foreign correspondent. Mind you, you are marginally better than some of your colleagues who would appear to limit their professional activity to reading and mistranslating El Pais once a week.
Juan María , Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain
Capital punishment anyone?
Joe Average, Everytown, USA
What's the difference between General Rodriguez Galindo or Vera? They killed and tortured on behalf of the Spanish state and they were freed from prison early. No outrage then.
But now Spanish opinion are "outraged" 'cos de Juana is getting home detention. Double standards or what?
Until Spain acknowledges that the Basque nation have the right to exercise their democratic right of self-determination, this political conflict will never end.
The guy was a terrorist and served his sentence under Spanish law. He was punished for two newspaper articles which can be found with a simple Google search. The articles contain no threats or glorification. Indeed, this farce smacks of Spain delivering Turkey or Egypt-style justice to this man. I am looking forward to International Amnesty's report on this issue.
Rob, Glasgow/Barcelona, Scotland/Catalonia
Separatist group? ETA is in both the EU and US' lists of terrorirsts organisations. Time to recognize what ETA really is.
