POPE BENEDICT XVI plans to bring back the celebration of mass in Latin, overriding a rare show of protest from senior cardinals.
With a papal decree said to be imminent, Catholic publishers in Rome are preparing new editions of the Latin missal. They have sent proofs to Vatican authorities for approval, the Rome newspaper La Repubblica reported yesterday.
Vatican sources said Benedict, who is fluent in Latin, is considering publication of a papal “motu proprio” (literally, on his own initiative), which does not require the approval of church bodies. This would enable Benedict to ignore opposition from several cardinals.
The decree would officially declare the Latin, or Tridentine, mass an “extraordinary universal rite”, and the vernacular mass, with which most Catholics are familiar, an “ordinary universal rite”.
The late French archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was excommunicated for opposing changes in the church agreed by the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s, including the replacement of the Tridentine mass with updated liturgy in local languages. The pope’s proposal will be cheered by Lefebvre’s traditionalist followers, said to number about 1m. A special Vatican commission, appointed to examine the demands of traditionalists, met in December to help draft the decree.
Today celebration of the Tridentine rite is limited. Bishops can allow it, but only on the condition that the celebration is deemed a sign of “affection for the ancient tradition” and not a criticism of the reforms.
Benedict wrote in his memoirs, My Life: Memories 1927-1977, published when he was still a cardinal: “I was stunned by the ban on the ancient missal.”

The return of the Latin Mass goes beyond historical, liturgical regard. In rekindling the Nation Catholic we need to begin again to fortify the Catholic village with our own traditions. Cultures who do not value their traditions disappear from sight. This does not mean that we cannot bring our 20th century tradition of humanity with us to our restored villages which is what is feared. The Jews have maintained their religious traditions alongside their humanitarian traditions. Yet there is no doubt they that they survived. We must do the same and become what we once were only with a humanitarian grace born of enlightenment.

What was before Vatican 2, a review of the literature would suggest Vatican 1 (and before that, various Councils i.e., Trent, or what many comments herein refer to as the Latin Mass.
And what was before these? Would that not be the original, as HE intended... And how was that conducted? In the vernacular...which is what Vatican 2 restored. I invite you to check the facts/history for yourself.
Mt. 28:19: Go ye, and make disciples of all nations in my name...

if this is the will of God then let us all pray for it to happen. I am sure that the pope is only interested in the will of God. personally the news is wonderful.

I am a Catholic who has been faithful to tradition my entire life, and I really don't need to be brought back into the Vatican's fold as I have never left the true church. The Vatican II church is a new church with a new mass, new doctrines & new teachings. Inother words, it is a whole new religion. At least Luther and Cranmer left. This ploy of the V2 church is just another way to mislead and corral disenchanted Catholics back into"their fold." The V2 church has spewed nothing but error. What remains is a mere skeleton of the true church. Now they are throwing traditionalists a bone. The true Mass, the Unbloody Sacrifice of theCross, and the new mass, a re-enactment of the Last Supper, cannot co-exist. The mass that Benedict is reinstating is from 1962 and not the Mass of old. Is the pope Catholic? Hardly. Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing for the ones who were watching over thesheep were the ones to scattethem.

The beginning of the end of one of the great apostasy's in the 2000 yrs of Christendom is coming to a screeching halt and what is that? It's the rotting results of a church slowly dying of reactionary rot and impregnated with the stench of liberalism and modernity & the fads of the present age, it is the end result of freemasonry gone mad in the heart of the Catholic church and it is the result of one of the worst church councils since Christ walked the Earth, it was called the Second Vatican council. Now in 2007 and for the previous decade there has been an ever increasing trend at least amoung millions of Catholic youth for a return to an Orthodox, Catholic faith and that means the return of the 1700 yr old Latin (Tridentine Mass) and an end to the sacriledges like clown masses, dog masses, kiddie masses, halloween masses etc, etc, etc. etc etc. As soon as apostates like mahoney, tod brown in the U.S. and a mulitude of pedophile enablers have left the scene, then Orthodoxy returns/

I have a dream, too. That the Latin Tridentine Mass is returned to the Roman Catholic Tradition that it once was. I am now a Full-Fledged Catholic, before a former Orthodox and Conservative Jewish Woman. I am hoping that our Pope, our Papa, Pope Benedict XVI will prevail over the recent criticisms of this awful age of computer systems and the mentality of micro-lifestyles that throw away people and the Latin Tridentine Mass has been one of those throw a ways. May God prevail here, Dear Jesus, Dear Holy Spirit please we beseech thee, please bring back the Latin Tridentine Mass. I hope and pray for peace in our troubled world that I believe will be cemented beautifully back together once again when the Latin Tridentine Masses and Perpetual Adoration Chapels are restored to their former glories. And maybe, just maybe future Priests and future Nuns will want to come back to pray for us too.

Having been stationed in Europe during the Cold War and travelling extensively through countries having different languages, I appreciated the fact that I could participate in Mass in Latin no matter what the vernacular was in the country I happened to find myself on a Sunday. After all of the centuries when populations were comparitively immobile in comparison to modern mobility, I was puzzled why we were doing away with the one tradition of the Church that made us truely catholic no matter where we ventured.
My last Tretintine Mass was at Westrmisnter Cathedral where I happened on it when paying a visit on a Saturday afternoon a few years ago. I was overjoyed and pleased to realize that I still knew the Latin liturgey from my childhood days.

I wholeheartedly support the reinstatement of the Latin Tridentine Mass as an ordinary part of Catholic life. My very soul yearns for the beautiful ancient rite that makes me feel uniquely Catholic and the closeness I feel to Christ through the meditative ritual established eons ago to facilitate worship of the Almighty. I am hoping that the modern Mass will also be available for those who prefer it; but please, oh, please, let us have our old Mass back! It is assumed that there has been no interest in the traditional Mass, but this is not true; for, those of us who were raised in the pre-Vatican II Catholic faith remember the beauty of the Mass and many, many Catholics perfer it. It's just that no one ever asked us . . .

I feel that God has spoken to Pope Benedict XIV an has told him to bring his Church back to sacred place to which it belongs. So many abuses in the new Mass have come to light wounding her in so many ways. Let us all pray to our Lady for divine help an guidance in the return of tridentine mass which will bring us all closer Jesus an God the Father Amen (Deo Gra'tias)

The decree would officially declare the Latin, or Tridentine, mass an extraordinary universal rite, and the vernacular mass, with which most Catholics are familiar, an ordinary universal rite.
What does that mean? Will all masses be in latin or just the 'high masses'? Will vernacular mass stop altogether?
One has to wonder as to what the reason was to start celebrating the mass in local languages. Perhaps to reach more people, to bring more sheep into the fold for the Glory of the Kingdom of God, to praise him in the language we know best.
On the other hand, to what end the decision to celebrate the mass in Latin. To unite us all into 'One Holy & Catholic & Apostolic Church', to have a common language no matter which part of the world we come from.
I believe reverence comes from within. It is guided by ones understanding, education & belief. Language wont instill the fear of God in you if you dont want to believe.
To whatever end, God be with us all!
Lionel Pereira, Salmiya, Kuwait
I support the reinstatement of the Tridentine Mass.I find the Novus Ordo Mass unholy and fruitless.Look at the appalling amount of liturgical abuse it has produced.Just one example the number of sacrilegious communions that have resulted since its disasterious introduction.
Francis Hungerford- Morgan, Auckland, New Zealand
This is exciting news indeed, however is there any evidence that the reports are actually true? Fr. Reginald Foster, the Pope's chief Latinist recently poured very cold water on these media reports that have been gathering pace since October last year. I am in Rome at the moment. The most recent date for the publication of the motu proprio (5th April) has been and gone. The suspense is real!

Pope Benedict XVI is a Very Holy Pope. This will be a Miracle of Miracles if the Holy Tridentine Mass is brought back to the world, and many Saints, Vocations, Holy Souls will spring forth - "GOD" Will Bless the World!!!

I left the Church because the reforms weakened it and the loss of the Latin Mass made it little different from Protestant services.

Every new day brings newer blessings from God, the Giver of every Good ! Therefore, with each new day, I am more than happy to see developments in the Restoration of the Roman Mass ! The secular press have also reported this miracle and I can hardly wait to have the Holy Mass in the local parish (redesigned to offer the only acceptable Sacrifice to the Most Holy Trinity in acts of Reparation, Praise and Thanksgiving)! I pray , it will happen in my lifetime until the end of time. God be blessed & thanked for His mercy to deprived souls.
Maria D'Souza, Mumbai, India
For all the skeptics out there, I would urge you to pray for an increase in the faith. If you had an idea of how many suffering souls have been derived of the Holy Sacrifice of the True Mass, you would be whooping with joy at the latest development coming from the Chair of St. Peter, no less. I have seen my own parents dismayed at having to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the True Mass in places other than the church premises which abandoned it. Pls therefore refrain from discouraging anyone about being glad for these developments. This good news is as yet unavailable to people who do not have an internet connection, pls use your time usefully and spread the good news to such in your neighbourhood.
I thank God (like Simeon in the temple) that my eyes have seen the Times ONLINE article....Deo Gracias.

I have been praying for years that the church restores the latin mass, at least to what I see on EWTN. I also have been praying for more reverence during the mass, I hope this is a start.

The Papal initiative to over-ride all oppositions in restoring the Roman Rite of the Holy Mass of all times is truly an answer to the prayers that have stormed Heaven. The restoration of the Holy Sacrifice of the True Mass in all Roman Catholic churches will mean a massive return of society at large to human levels of lifestyles. Crime graphs will decline, obedience to the Ten Commandments and the Six Precepts of the Church will be in greater focus for all to see by example of those already faithful to the Roman Rite. God be praised and thanked for this development in our lifetime, indeed !
Maria D'Souza, Mumbai, India
The restoration of the Roman Rite of the Holy Mass to be honoured for all time, is truly a sign of Divine Intervention in answer to all the pleading prayers of great souls. The new generation will doubtless grasp the return to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and will know it against all odds, as being something not to mess around with. Many hearts must already be rejoicing at the development and continue to pray that the Holy Father is not delivered delivered upto his enemies and that he lead all the sheep back to the Good Shepherd. God has indeed turned His Face again on the prayers and answered them. Deo Gracias.

As with Our Lord's 40 days of fast in the desert, we've nearly completed 40 years of being denied the True Mass in our local parishes by most local priests who didn't have the strength of faith to continue offering the TRUE MASS after Vatican II. As a child, I watched the TRUE MASS being dismantled by our local parish priests under the guise of "obedience" to their bishops and I remember being most distressed by the removal of the tabernacle from the centre of the church, the turning around of the priest who should have been offering the unbloody SACRIFICE of our Lord on our behalf to God, and the changing of prayers which I was at the age of about 6 years, just learning to memorise and understand. Hopefully I'll be around long enough to see the restoration of all things in Christ, and to help my children learn and understand the TRUE CATHOLIC FAITH which the Saints have given their lives for. Pray the rosary for the Pope that he will restore the TRUE MASS IN ALL CATHOLIC PARISHES.

Wow! we're so so happy ...
We have to attend the Novus Ordo Mass but sometimes, on Sundays, we travel kilometres to attend the Latin one ... what a difference!
Believe me, in the Holy Mass today the priest is the centre of attraction in the Tridentine Mass our Lord is the centre of all things!

Another massive retrograde step by the Catholic Church. Congregations of Catholic Churches are now only half of what they were just a few years ago. Look around you. We used to have many more Sunday Masses than we do now, and every one was well attended, unlike now where the sparse congregations are made up of "Grey hairs" and "Bald heads". The Tridentine mass is a like mickey take of the Catholic Church of half a century ago. Fifty years ago, at the Second Vatican Council a very wise Pope dropped Latin and chanting at mass to bring the Catholic Church into the twentieth century. Now we are going backwards, reverting to nineteenth century dogma, just to mollify the rosy memories a few silly old farts who will be dead soon.
THINK AND THINK HARD.
Our children are the future of our church and they embrace the twenty first century, not the dusty mores of the "good old days".
Dinosaurs died out because they couldn't adapt.
Don't make our Churches the modern day Dinosaurs.

First of all, the return of the Latin Tridentine Mass is long overdue! Thank God it is coming! Secondly, the references to the Lefebvre's being schismatic here is ALL WRONG! Or, that the Traditionalists, as they are called, are the Schismatics -THAT'S ALL WRONG! The Great Schism which is referred to in prophecy refers to the Catholic Church as it is today under the NOVUS ORDO MASS, post-VATICAN 2!Schism means to break away from the True Church. IF YOU ATTEND A NOVUS ORDO MASS, Y-O-U ARE SCHISMATIC! You are not practicing the TRUE FAITH, which makes you a breakaway from the True Church. The Blessed Virgin Mary countless times appears all over the world & beginning in Fatima warns of the Great Schism wherein the Church will be in "eclipse" with no leader (or Pope) and Rome will be the seat of the "Anti-christ". She felt the need under Divine Direction to appear in 1917 to warn of this, not later. The last few Popes we've had were like having none at all--empty chair--Sedevacant!

When I was 17, and knew everything, I thought the Latin Mass was terrible; however, now that I am 62 and know nothing, Praise Our Gracious and Merciful Lord for our Beloved Pope Benedict XIV, who has restored it. Went right to the Internet tonight to order a Latin/English Missal, and absolutely cannot wait to attend my First Latin Mass in 45 years. Glory to God!

I have recently joined Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Latin Mass Community in Littleton, Co. because I have gotten so tired of all the distractions at the Masses since Vatican ll. I am 76 yrs. old and have come to realize the Eucarist is what is most important to me. I find myself back to praying more at Mass as I was used to, before Vatican ll. There is plenty chance to socialize after Mass. The Latin Music is beautiful and so well preasented. Now I leave the church feeling like I have really been to Mass. Sincerely, Magdalen Mauldin

The Tridentine mass allows for sanctity in our prayers during the Mass. When Vatican too much took it away, all sorts of abuses rang into the Mass. In some places the Mass was hardly recognizable as a Catholic Mass. The liberal factions in our Church will howl like hyenas because people will return to the practice of sacred and solemn way of hearing the Mass. I could not be more ecstatic at this news. Maybe, just maybe, the liberal clergy and their followers will stop the nonsense of dancing on the altar and Lord knows how many other abuses and sacriliges are going on in some of the parishes throughout the world. We needed this to happen. I believe Gods Hand is in this, and the Holy Spirit is guiding our dear Pope. We should all bless our Pope and support all his efforts.
Roy Banes, Wichita, KS.
Along with the New Mass came new rites of ordination in 1969, rites which fail to specify the priestly and episcopal graces they are supposed to effect and which therefore come within the ambit of Pope Leo XIII's "Apostolicae Curae" of 1896 which had declared such rites null and void. Therefore if a post-1969 priest celebrates the Traditional Latin Mass under the proposed "Indult" it would be as good as one celebrated by a Reformist Minister.
John Menezes, Mumbai, India
I wonder if Jesus had his back turned to the 12 apostles at the Last Supper..after all this is where it all started. I think the real problem and the crux of the issue is whether people pray and love with their hearts. To see the judgementalism, exclusivism and criticism by those who push the Latin mass as the true and only way, including putting down all aspects of Vatican II, is not of the Lord. Soon to be saint John Paul II never did so, but was a true Shepherd, to all of his flock..he prayed with Charismatics, the youth, moved with compassion he kissed an armless man Tony Melendez after he played a song on the (God forbid) guitar with his feet, prayed with all others as well. When will th Catholics grow out of their fear and realize that "in my Father's house are many mansions". The myopic views and criticisms lend nothing to the Body of Christ in our church. Paul said you can move mountains, but without love you are like a clanging gong!
Tom Doyle, Plattsmouth, NE
I am overwhelmed that the Tridentine Mass will be returned. It is the mass of all ttimes and we have Saints in the Catholic church who have been true to the tradtional mass. I would like to follow the true mass of all the saints. The Catholic has been to holdfast to what has been handed down to every Catholic and must feel a personal rite when hey come to him with all the authorities of the centuries. this ancient traditional mass has been handed from Christ to the apostles. "ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH' . Latin being the most sacred and universal language of the church and oneness can be found in the Tridentine mass. For they came from God through Christ and through the church. For many generations have prayed in this rite and have found in them steadiness in joy and consoltion in sorrow. For there is also found to be many graces received through this mass
Doris D'souza, Orlem Malad Bombay, India
I am so ecstatic the Latin Rite is coming back. I was born in 1951 and grew up in the beautiful old churches with the choirs and mystery. I could cry everytime I attend mass now. There is no holiness in the modern mass. People don't pray before mass, they use the time to socialize.
I really believe most of the problems in the world were caused by Vatican II. It took the sacredness away from Catholics.
Linda Meyer, Ringgold, USA/GA
The ancient Latin Tridentine mass as we all know it is
" The mass of all times", and we have Saints in the Catholic church that were true followers of the Traditional Latin mass. I am overwhelmed that it is coming back as I then have the opportunity to follow this mass without any hindrances form the Bishops that oppose it in my hometown.
The Tridentine Mass has True meaning in it. I don't see any reason why this mass should be opposed as this Mass has been handed down by Christ to his Apostles as being
"ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC" this shows oneness & is the Universal language of the Church.
The Catholic tradition has been to hold fast to what has been handed down. Every Catholic must feel a personal love for those sacred rites when they come to him with all authorities of the centuries. For they come to them from GOD through Christ and through the Church.
Doris D'souza, Orlem Malad Bombay, India
Don't count your chickens before they hatch. It seems we have been waiting for this for a very long time. I believe He will have great trouble implementing this..I for one can't wait!! Please Pray that it will come soon.

I am so glad that the Latin Rite mass is returning. This mass has the true essence of the Catholic tradition. I did not have the opportunity until 4 yrs ago when I was introduced to it. By going to this mass my faith has increased tremendously. All that I hear from the priests is the meaning of faith and religion that we follow, and the priest are so explicit. They have exceptional knowledge on the faith & are so intelligent & preach what Jesus & Mary whould have loved the flock to know.
I am 36 yrs old , it feels like I have found what I was looking for, and sadly which is not present in the in the Novo Ordus.

As a child I always felt how could you not be healed with words like "Sanibitur anima mea"? I shall be healed just doesn't evoke the same awe.
And how could you not see the majesty of God in "Dominus Deus Sabaoth."
However, on the opposite side of the coin, my husband said he never understood the mass or what it represented until it was said in English, and he did become a daily communicant. So perhaps both options should be available to that all can worship in spirit and in truth.

am a Catholic priest ordained well after the Second Vatican Council in 1988. Several years ago, after teaching myself Latin and learning the rubrics, I started celebrating the Tridentine Mass in private. Having now celebrated the Novus Ordo Missae and the Tridentine Mass, I am convinced that the Tridentine Mass is the best expression of our Catholic Faith. Why are many bishops and liturgists against it? Well, I guess it is very hard to acknowledge that the post Vatican II reforms have been a failure. Especially since they have spent the past 45 years in the land of "The Emperor's New Clothes," telling everyone that things are just great and wonderful.
Father Serafino, san antonio,
It seems a bit strange although not surprising that the most adamant comment against restoration of the Latin Mass came from a priest. We need not only the Mass back but some holy clergy as well. It is noteworthy that most of the respondents are from the Americas. Deo Gratias for Pope Benedict XVI.
Lance Patrick Mashburn, Columbus, GA
Thank God Pope Benedict has the courage to do the right thing. After all, it was practically "overnight" that priests started saying Mass facing the people rather than facing the Altar of God; when we received the Eucharist by hand; women stopped covering their heads in the presence of the Eucharist; started "holding" hands at peace time (which in most parishes has turned into a Social Minutes or Two), etc. I remember when no one got a seat at Mass if they did not arrive early. I also remember when everyone genuflected before they got into their seat and when they left their seats. Do people even know what a genuflection is??? I remember when there were lines for Confession every week. I remember when the organ was the only musical instrument in the Catholic Church and the music played was angelic and lovely. I remember when people bowed each time they said Jesus' name. Yes, the Latin Mass was beautiful and every Catholic was stunned when it "ended". Bring it back!!!

Whether you call it the latin mass or tridentine mass it still wasn't easy to find one near where you live and not to many churches were willing to add one to their schedule. Maybe this will change. I'd like to live long enough to have one said near my house. Hopefully in my parish.

Amen for my Pope! I am from Arkansas and I have to travel two and a half hours from home to attend a Tridentine Mass in Mt. Home. There, the Priests wear Cassacks; women wear veils; and the music is sacred. The celebrant priest faces the altar, and the Corpus Cristi looks like the image on the Shroud of Turin. The reverence shown in this Mass is moving. I leave feeling that I have truly worshipped my Lord.
psut, alpena, Arkansas
Praise be Jesus Christ..........this is long over due.my only fear is, will bishops and priests follow this or will they still "do their own thing"? We are tired of "church-hopping" and now have to attend Mass at a Benedictine Abbey if we want to attend something sacred, not full of "whatever we feel like. we do"
Liza, Salem, USA
My husband and I disagree on the Latin Mass.....I think when we lost the Latin Mass the slippery slope appeared. We ended up with every kind of music imaginable, dancing, and whatever else the Liturgy Committee would deep "interesting." I welcome it back and we will see the Mystery of the Mass return. Our grandchildren attended a regular Mass in a beautiful old Church, and although it was not in Latin, they were in awe of how different it was....and they are only 9 and 6. They knew something different was going on just because it looked like a Church and people acted as though it was a Church....the Latin Mass will do the same....Mystery and Awe.....

Yessssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been waiting forever for this. I'm 68 yrs old I only hope I live long enough to see it actually happen. Everything takes so long from start to finish in the Catholic Religion.

The actual issue is the Univeraslism of the Mass. The Orthodox Greek and Russian Liturgies are both in the language of the people (and always have been in the vernacular) but the way it was been ordered has not been change for a millenium.
A "Roman" Catholic going to a "Latin" Mass . Use your head to figure this one out.
The problem is the way that the Mass is Ordered the altar and priest facing the people (instead of God), the use of Eucharistic minister(s), those are issues being addressed it's not a comparison of the two Rites .
W Mobius, Fresno/CA, USA
I was born in the '50s and was exposed to the Tridentine Masses. But I am happy to say that I did not miss it too much. It was solemn and highly ceremonial. But I find nothing wrong with the Novus Ordo Masses. In fact, I find Jesus Christ to be just as Real and Present with the beautiful guitar music accompaniment.
I could relate, understand, and appreciate better
the Mass in the vernacular with contemporary hymns. It is less repetitive and I participate fully in it. So let those who love the Tridentine Mass have theirs and those who love the Novo Ordus Masses have theirs also. Let's not criticize each other. I am sorry for those who were deprived of the Tridentine Masses and were hurt by it. But if we both reverenced the two Rites then that's what would most please our Lord Jesus Christ. Charity starts with one another. We are Catholic Christians, so there is room for everyone. We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord, and where there is Unity, there is Love.
Maria Yiu, Vancouver, Canada
I've patiently and prayerfully waited since the late 1960s for the return of the Tridentine Mass which united the entire world. I have never stopped saying the essential elements of the Mass in Latin, refusing to be robbed of my Tradition. With great joy and thanksgiving I anticipate the return of this marvelous Mass where Christ, our Savior, is praised respectfully. May our Holy Father be blessed abundantly for his courage and may all those who come to know (or rekindle) their joy in the Tridentine Mass be graced.
John Di Nitto, Concord, New Hampshire/USA
Hopefully there will be valid priests to pray the True Mass. In fact the True Mass (i.e. the Traditional Latin Mass) has never been officially abrogated because it cannot be. Pope Saint Pius V's QUO PRIMUM officially made it the Catholic Mass forever. The Novus Ordo "mass" is not truly Catholic but protestant and in most cases invalid. That has been proven by many competent Catholic authors. If one does some honest research on this, he or she will discover the truth about where the Catholic Church really is today--and where she is not.
Jason, Louisiana, USA
The pope made an intelligent decision to bring back catholicism as a 'universal' religion. You can go anywhere in the world and know what part of the mass they are saying. It also treat the host in a more sacred way where the priest is praising GOd with the people. It is the way it really should be done. NOw I have to tell you I only attended latin mass 4x and felt that it is a more sacred way to celebrate the mass. Think about this-the greatest of all saint attended mass this way. What stuns me is how anyone can even oppose to the pope especially priests. I suppose it is the intimidation of saying latin. They should be frightened to oppose the one who was elected by GOD himself in this kinds of decision. These people lacks obedience and faith which is what makes most priests weak. They cannot seem to remember that Popes always makes the right decision . Fortunately there are young priests in seminaries who can hopefully say the latin mass and be more obedient to the pope.

When I went to Fatima in 1992, there were Masses in many languages. Whenever I think back to that Pilgrimage, I think of how all the diverse pilgrims could have been more united by the Sacred Liturgy of The Latin Mass.

.........and, if people start to say the rosary, they might put pressure on their bishops to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart as she asked in Fatime. And if that happens, we might have world peace and then, where would all the power hungry demagogues -in both the governemnt and in our church- go? The Tridentine Mass' beautiy was not singularily in its Latinness, but in it's spirituality which came through because it is still the greatest sacrifice. The Novus Ordo is a great community prayer for those who are into groupie things. I hate the circus at every mass when people jump around, hugging, kissing and socializing then try to return to the Mass. ANd, how about the fact that so many priests have changed the words of the consecration to ".....gave the bread to his friends " instead of "disciples"? These words are not synonymous. AT least in LAtin, this craziness is not an option.

Thank God for Pope Benedict XVI. Hopefully this will combat the moral relativism that has been encroaching upon the parishes in America.
I pray that Pope Benedict XVI will assess the situation here in America, because too many parishes have paganism (actual paganism- no kidding! Polytheism! And incorporate such practices like reiki, buddhist chant, etc.) There are people raised in the Catholic Church that have deviated from the Church's Universal Truth, and instead, they have turned toward paganism, wicca, witchcraft, polytheism, etc... Because they are accepting of all religious "paths" -ahem- they seem to think everyone should feel the same way.... so much so that they have brought their pagan activities into the parishes in the US on huge levels.)
Please, God, help Pope Benedict XVI put an end to moral relativism in the US, and to stamp out the paganism that is infultrating the parishes & convents here!

I am delighted. I've been holding my breath after attending the first New Mass. We might be able to repaid the harm done. Hope to attend every day.
frances marie, NYC,
Thanks be to God- Hope it will be the same latin mass as pre Vatican 2 also to restore the old catechism, and the old form of the 7 sacrements.

I Pray to God That we go back to the Latin Rite Masses,
We need to have God respected again. I have been praying for this. I hope the Pope sees this thru. God Bless.

It won't work. After the novelty wears off people will long for any language they could praise God intelliegently. Many years ago ( I am 84) I was very fluent in Latin and loved the language. ( I still do: I somtimes say part of my breviary in Latin.)
But today Latin is a d e a d language and will never resurrect. 'Omnia mutantur et nos mutamur in illis. Sic transit gloria mundi. O tempora o mores, o stulti professores!
What a waste to have all those many Latin missalls printed. Today I couldn't say a Mass in Latin especially with my back to the people! Jesus didn't do that.
Fr.P.K. Sharp, OFM, Toronto,
Praise and thank God for Pope Benedict who is for the return of the Latin Mass. Lets bring back the altar rails and Comminion on the tonge and let us kneel before our God in praise and thanksgiving.Lets also bring back Perputual Adoration in every parish worldwide. Its time to get back to being Catholic and proud of it.

Finally IN MY LIFETIME I return to what gave me such joy as a teenager. My son, who never has been able to know the Tridentine Mass because of where he lived at any given time, has spoken with such tenderness about being able to attend the same Mass that his Mother did in her youth. May God be honored and pleased with what we now what we take on in anticipation of the spiritual blessing we will receive as we respond, "Et cum spiritu tuo"..."and with your spirit"...which the Novus Ordo has changed to "And also with you" (not the same concept, folks!) Oh, what a comfort and peace for this sixty year old gal.

I never grew up as a Catholic. But my only hope is that with the return of the Latin Mass, that kneeling during the Consecration, will also return. Beacuse here in Edmonton, many parishs, do not kneel. I look so forward to, the return of Tradition.
DJ, Edmonton, Alberta
I have prayed for this to happen for so many years,
I thank God for our new Holy Father, for his health and protection...people do not understand what this means...
part of it will be in English but the most Sacred part of the Holy Mass will be in the Church language, Latin...
the Greeks have it in their Church service, the Jewish people have it in their Friday/Saturday Temple service...
yet we are the true Church of Jesus Christ and we have become so secular...everyone should read Jeremia and many other in both the Old and the New Testament about the sacrateness of the House of the Lord, reverence...etc
I am getting ready to go to Adoration of His Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament...every Tuesday morning I do this tomorrow am/Tuesday I am going to thank Him for this miracle...now we need to do much more...unite everyone and help so many Cafeteria Catholics that follow any vicionary instead of giving more devotion to Eucharist and the Rosary...daily Mass & the Sacraments..

Deo Gratius-I will believe it when I see it!!!I do hope it will be the same latin Mass as before Vatican 2 and not the new order of the mass translated into latin. This will be a start then they can restore the old catechism so people can learn the real Catholic Faith. Also the seven sacraments should return to the original form as before Vatican 2. Pray daily for Pope Bennedict.

I am overjoyed at the news of the "return" of the Latin Mass.
I, for one, plus many of my friends, will attend this rite of the Mass, just as soon as we can find a parish close to us.
As it is, in order to attend Sunday Mass in Latin, with all the reverence which I miss so much, I have to travel 16 miles to Toronto (Canada).
To find a Mass on Sunday, where there are NO ghastly guitars, and the music which always accompanies them, is truly a feat!
God bless Pope Benedict!!

I definitely see the highly spiritual value of the Tridentine Mass to be celebrated in Latin. I celebrated it not only 15 straight years after my ordination, but before retiring I offered such Mass for over 6 years monthly for the Harrisburg Diocesan Community. Of course I do foresee some norms for its celebration but it should not be a sin or irregularity for a priest to offer it without a bshop's permission.

The article states, "The popes proposal will be cheered by Lefebvres traditionalist followers, said to number about 1m."
Well, I'm not a follower of Lefebvre's. I'm not a schismatic. But, I am among many Catholics who want to see the Latin Tridentine Mass freely available.
It is outrageous that this beautiful Mass was outlawed in the first place. And, since the plan is to have both the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine Masses offered, why are these Cardinals so upset about it? Are they afraid that Catholics will start focusing on DIVINITY instead of on "community" during Mass? Oh, dear! Next thing you know, more people will pray the Rosary and will start believing in the Real Presence again. Can't have THAT, now can we? And, =gasp!=, churches may start putting back the statues and return the Tabernacle to its rightful place on the Alter!! That would really stir up the "spirit of Vatican II" crowd. And, it's about time. Thank you, Pope Benedict XVI, for doing the right thing!
Phil Trevathan, Franklin, TN
Hooray for His Holiness Benedict XVI! I am amazed that there is any opposition to this at all, especially among those cardinals who remember the Mass as it was in Latin. For decades now, I and countless others have endured Mass in the vernacular which has permitted constant abuses by well-intentioned celebrants and homilists who wish to edit or rephrase the prayers of the Mass, and even the Gospel reading itself, to suit their own tastes. It's as though the post-Vatican II Mass is all about us, about how we feel and what we want. The focus is no longer on God, it's on us. We have been forced to listen to and sing along with uninspired song after song, often celebrating our own voices rather than the glory of the Creator. The silence and reverence of the Tridentine Mass has been replaced by a constant chattiness and murmuring both before and after the Mass, and a sense of the Real Presence has been almost completely lost. I absolutely yearn to see the restoration of the Latin Mass.
N. Sullivan, Edison,
the resurrection of the Traditional Latin Mass will be 'the seed" which will germinate and sprout . . . and grow and spread a more resounding spiritual rootedness and connection with the religious experience of "the communion of saints" - the church through the centuries . . . when the roots of that tree were severed (and they were) the tree of life that is the spiritual animation of the church on earth began to wither and fade . . . Pople John Paul II restored our traditional spirituality . . . Pope Benedict will restore the life-spring connection . . . of course, "for those who choose to follow it" . . . and many spiritually thirsty souls will choose to do just that!

Faithfulness to the word of God will be increased. I notice the joy with which Pope Benedict XVI says the Pater Noster during his Wednesday audiences. Everyone who knows the Our Father knows what he is saying.

Pro Multis - I am excited by the correct order and phrases being said at every mass. I have had it with novel innovations. Yet I do hope that microphones for the priests are allowed. No kidding! It is difficult to follow the missal if you are sitting far back. I also hope that some new future pope does not issue his own motu proprio to end the Latin mass. Otherwise I too am very excited by the possibility traditional holy mass returning close to my home. The closest Latin mass is over an hour away. Pax.
Tom Larsen, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA
I am happy for the return of a more available Latin Mass. More than this I wish for the wording of the consecration to be returned to before Vatican II. The wording should be exactly as Christ said, when he said do this in memory of Me. Christ did not mean anything other than what he said. Also I wish more than anything for congregations to be kneeling at the Consecration. For the life of me I do not know why the Canadian Bishops insist that we stand during this most Holy time of the Mass. How can one call total attention to children and press them to devotion and respect to Christ if they are not allowed to kneel. It seems to me this is another tactic being employed to cause people forget or even fall in with many who already believe that Christ is really not present in the Holy Ucharist, instead this is symbolic only. God help us!!!
Pat Curzon, Calgary, AB
For far too long the faithful have been subjected to a new Mass that is man-centered as opposed to God-centered, punctuated by a forced sociality and gimmickry, lack of reverence and silly music. From the foregoing, Deliver Us O Lord.

As a Roman Catholic seminarian, I am very much in favor of the liberalization of the 1962 Roman Missal. I believe the 2 Roman Rites could co-exist. I am also in favor of a revised Novus Ordo, where the Mass would be in Latin and would be said facing the same direction as the people. If this alleged Moto Proprio only accomplishes the freedom of a priest to celebrate the Tridentine Mass in private, this will be a futile effort in regards to bringing the SSPX back into full communion with Rome, for their view is that the Mass needs to be made available at a priest's discretion(not a local bishop) and to be able to say the Mass in public at his discretion. So bring on the Moto Proprio with a universal indult and a revision of the Novus Ordo!
C. Sons, Columbus, Ohio
I agree, it's not the language of the Mass. It's the liturgy itself; and the current Mass is not the same liturgy as the pre-conciliar Mass. Hopefully the Motu Proprio will include the permission for the vernacular celebration of the Ancient Mass (1965 Missal).
Louis Pizzuti, Syracuse, NY,
Like Lefebvre's one million traditionalist followers, I welcome the good news of Pope Benedict's plans to bring back the Tridentine rite. The introduction of too many extraneous and profane influences into the Catholic Church and the revision of the liturgy after Vatican II has made worship in church today less a spiritual God-centred experience and more akin to a man-centred, feelgood social occasion in the pub. The sentimentalization of much sacred music today, plus the strident electric guitars that often accompany modern liturgical music do grate on the nerves and detract from the intense concentration required to partake in the experience of the divine mystery during worship. The Church must reclaim its heritage and restore the Gregorian rite to its former glory. Or, it needs a Prince of Music like Palestrina and one, like him, deserving of the epithet 'the ocean into which all streams have flowed'. Alleluia.
SD GOH, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
I continue to reel at the irrelevance of such a motu proprio. I don't think the language of the Mass is really the issue of the day. It seems to me the incredibility of those who preside at the Mass is what keeps most people away from the Lord's table.
T. Pivinski, Asbury Park, USA
We have been waiting already for months for the Motu Proprio. The aricle contains errors. Archbishop LeFebvre was not excommunicated for his views of Vatican II, but for ordaining bishops without Vatican approval. The excommunication was never formalised by JP II. As noted already, the (new) Mass in Latin was was never forbidden. The Holy Father has concluded - as many of us (who travel miles every week to attend the old rite) concluded - that the liturgical changes of the 70s failed utterly to achieve their goal, robbed Catholics of their centuries old heritage and in their practical application drove countless numbers away in their by their banality and sheer ugliness of form. The form of Mass before and after the reforms is very different and no amount of dressing up the new rite, even in Latin, can equal the atmosphere and devotion of the old rite. It goes far beyond a question of language. Rifts that need healing depend for starters on this restoration. I for one long for the day.
Jeremy Boot, Nottingham, UK
Of course, in Orthodoxy, the Gregorian Mass (of which the Tridentine Mass is a form), is still used with none of the discord that seems to stem from the issue among our Catholic friends.
Michael Astley, Manchester, United Kingdom
I was brought up as a Catholic but gave up going to Mass some thirty years ago. Now if I go into church I haven't a clue what is going on: when to stand, when to kneel or when to sit. And that's in England: forget trying to take part in a Mass in France, Germany or anywhere else where it is not in English. If they restore the Latin, tridentine Mass of my childhood, I might just be persuaded to go back, occassionally anyway. Isn't having uniquely, ancient rituals central to the appeal of Catholicism?
Adrian, Sevenoaks,
Please - can we clear up this point once and for all? The 'Latin Mass' never 'went out': what 'went out' was the Tridentine rite. The new rite, approved by Pope Paul VI, was still in latin - but in the liturgical renewal of that time provision was made for the vernacular language to be used for pastoral reasons. It was this provision - used carte blanche and without any insight into the growing globalisation which saw more and more people leaving their native lands and so in need of a universal rather than a vernacualr language - that led to the, more or less absolute, abandonment of latin. One has always been able to find the Mass in latin in some places, for example Westminster Cathedral.
A J McCabe, Doncaster,
Pope John Paul II allowed the use of the ancient Mass according to the 1962 revision many years ago,for those who chose to use it,but most bishops have effectively banned it,being determined to impose the novus ordo on everyone. One arguement put forward is that the young especially would not be able to accept a foreigh and dead language, and yet we see the phenomenon of thousands of young people converting to Islam and happily learning Arabic in order to worship in their liturgical language.
In the old days, wherever in the world you attended Mass you were at home.
