“Panties or thong?” is not the kind of question usually fielded by government spin-doctors. But Zsuzsa Demcsak, a former underwear model and the new spokeswoman for Hungary’s Socialist-led coalition government, is perhaps used to more intimate inquiries than her counterparts. She told Velvet magazine that she preferred thongs.
The internet is awash with pictures of Ms Demcsak, a striking brunette, in various stages of undress in her former incarnation. Political pundits predict that the 28-year-old mother of two, who previously worked as a television reporter, is unlikely to last long in her new position.
Not because of her racy past, about which Hungarians take a relaxed view, but because of her blog. For a communications professional Ms Demcsak is surprisingly tactless about what she reveals in print.
Under the heading “My Nursery Calvary”, Ms Demcsak lamented at length about trying to find a suitable nursery for her toddler son in Budapest’s district XIII, whose staff, equipment and potential playmates would meet her exacting standards. “Beluka”, who only had one set of clothes, did not. Nor did little “Laura”, apparently regularly beaten by her parents, or “Adamka”, who was taken in by his drunken mother even when he had chickenpox.
The staff, she said, were “soulless”.
The blog provoked national outrage. Hungary’s childcare system is a wonder to behold, especially for anyone who has struggled to find a nursery in Britain. The state-subsidised nurseries and kindergartens, which cost just a few pounds a month, are run by much-loved nenis (aunties), who are devoted to their young charges.
One mother replied that she was sorry she was unable to afford more clothes for her son. Magdolna Karacsonyi, a local government official, said that the nurseries were governed by strict regulations covering hygiene and food and also provided clothes.
Another blog entry recorded Ms Demcsak’s delight at attending the Budapest Opera Ball, where tickets start at £183 — almost a month’s pay for the nursery nenis.
For the hordes of outraged readers adding their comments, the thoughts of Ms Demcsak, the daughter of a former diplomat, typify the arrogance of the new rich elite — who are often rooted in the former Communist ruling classes. Ms Demcsak’s boss, Ferenc Gyurcsany, the Prime Minister, is an ex-Communist youth leader turned capitalist multimillionaire and one of the richest men in Hungary.
Ms Demcsak’s defenders say she is a talented professional who is being penalised for being female, attractive and successful, and that her critics are motivated by envy and spite. Her position has been weakened by articles in the conservative daily Magyar Nemzet, alleging links between her husband, Jozsef Kiss, a businessman, and underworld gangs.
She denies the claims and says she will take legal action. Government officials say the articles are part of a smear campaign and are standing by her.

an already unpopular governement, was not able to find a better candidate as spokesperson.. sad..
a spokesperson is really one of the main 'faces' of the governement. but whereas for a 'face' we tend to look for a looker, in this case it should not have bveen the only criterion.. perhaps some degree of respectability would have been a welcome quality..
hard to find anyone in the Hungarian elite, governement or opposition who does not have a tainted resume in some way

Demcsák Zsuzsa is beauty woman but only beauty yet goverment of the political idea, because, goverment is ethical, political, social and highest region. ok?

Yessss!
Dear Ágnes, let us start "government-opposition" debate in this forum too.
Please notice, that not many of the stories in Hungary can make it to the Times. It is a scandal and it has nothing to do with opposition.
"This woman who (a) was married (b) had children (c) had a career in television (d) has a good body (which she was not ashamed to show), still was not good enough for the Opposition." My Goodness! There's something more needed for being a government spokeswoman!

You can read in the article:
"The state-subsidised nurseries and kindergartens, which cost just a few pounds a month, are run by much-loved nenis (aunties), who are devoted to their young charges. "
Just an additional information:
The aunties are not just love children but they are well educated professionals with diploma. Working in the kindergarten is a profession.
Generally, I can agree with Marta.
Gabor, Budapest,
The problem is that in the current climate it does not matter who the government will choose. There will always be some sort of a problem with any selected individual. This woman who (a) was married (b) had children (c) had a career in television (d) has a good body (which she was not ashamed to show), still was not good enough for the Opposition. Can you imagine anybody who would fit the Opposition party's expectations? Yes, somebody from their own closed circle with no past or present. Please, take note that the same thing happens all over the world, including in England. Hence I do not understand what all the fuss is about?
Szabó Agnes, Eger,
The socialist-liberal coalition in Hungary is famous about its terrible communication. And this one is just another mistake. But telling the truth the rather right wing opposition has excellent ability of being populist, and their politics can be summarised: "deny everything what the government does or ever will be doing" even if it harms their own country.
Gabor, Budapest, Hungary
Some English people don't know that there is a long-time dirty political war between the Hungarian governing coalition (Socialist and Liberal Parties) and the Conservative Party (Fidesz).
The story is just another part of this war and another sign of the deep diversification of the Hungarian people.
Meanwhile the current government try to start a lot of reform the same time which are very hard to see for those people who are against the coalition.
Zoltan, Budapest, Hungary
'Hungarys childcare system is a wonder to behold, especially for anyone who has struggled to find a nursery in Britain. The state-subsidised nurseries and kindergartens, which cost just a few pounds a month, are run by much-loved nenis (aunties), who are devoted to their young charges.'
Bad reporting, totally subjective and typical of a silly article all round. Why can't we have more interesting, relevant stories about Hungary and other central European countries instead of this pathetic, sensationalist fluff piece?
Szentpetery Kris, Bradford, UK
The main problem is, people say things about Hungary, communism, and these things, without knowing it at all. (ie. Tessa, Swansea)
These people were communist, because they are older then 35-40y. We still had communism in 1989, that means everyone who worked in the political section in Hungary before `89 was communist. So if someone was 20 then, now he is 38. Should he be dead? I think these are too strong words.
Istvan, Reading, UK
I'd like to tell some add-in to this story to those British people, whose are'nt know well Hungary. As Mr. LeBor said: "The state-subsidised nurseries and kindergartens, which cost just a few pounds a month". Thats true, but our average salary is just a few pound, as well, if we compare the British salary. (The Hungarian average gets 240 pounds per month if we not count the high 50% taxes).
It's a wrong fashion to identify the Hungarian left wing as an ex-communist. I think there's no one in Hungary near the political power, whose are not infected some ex-communist background suppose we the Hungarian left or right parties. I think also, that we have not say real communist ideology inside this political circle for 30 years. These men and women were worked to undermine the "real communist" ideology inside or outside of the One party in the late communist era. They are made your own business, divided the collective properties each other.
Sanya, Budapest, Hungary
Unfortunately it's neither the last and nor the worst act of Comrade Gyurcsány's government but maybe gives a clue to a British reader what moral standards the Hungarian socialist and liberal coalition have. Nevertheless this article is a pleasent surprise after Mr. le Bor rather apologetic last interview wit the Hungarian PM and one could only hope that he prefers this factual attitude which is a minimal requirement from a good journalist...
John Just, Budapest, Hungary
As far as I know millions read Times so at least those people will have some idea about our life in Hungary -- with the powerful assistance of the West (not the first occasion in the history of Hungary).
Dr.Kocsis György, Budapest, Hungary
Thanks Times, for investigating and revealing this story to the British and world public. It had made an additional pressure on the Hungarian government and most probably it had contributed to the resignation. It's a shame that post-communists try to wrap dirty things into an attractive package. They are not European by this practice, they are not eligible to become politicians in the EU. I have lived in Hungary for a while, and the post-communists' everyday practice is disgusting
Rob, Slough,
This is indeed the case of a government bureaucrat who lost her common sense possibly due to her husband's money and lifestyle that an average Hungarian can only dream of. But it is also a unfortunate distraction from the fact that Hungary's Communist - Liberal government is all too busy wrecking the country's middle class while their friends are getting richer by the day.
Jozsef S., Budapest,
Zsuzsa Demcsak is a most successful, attractive ex-model. I think no problem about her playboy photos. She is a wonderful mom, their children love her so, and people cannot same.. she failed about her blog - kindergarten, opera etc. but politicians have the biggest money everywhere. So she can change the kindergarten... She refuses the spokesperson work.
Excuse me!
Vadas Piri, Gyor, Hungary
As far as I know millions read Times so at least those people will have some idea about our life In Hungary -- with the powerful assistance of the West (not at first occasion in the history of Hungary).
Yours sincerely,
Dr.George Kocsis, Budapest, Hungary
The only good Hungarian ex Communists are the dead ones!!
Gyurcsany is a lying champagne socialist, so are his acolytes who have
betrayed Hungary!! He should be charged with treason with his party!!!
With his alleged governance Hungary got to the bottom of the EU.
We do not need enemy with this kind of representation!
Tessa, Swansea, Glam
Marta Turi, I think she's been chosen because she is liked by almost everyone- okay, she was liked by almost everyone BEFORE. I mean people would understand what the government says if they heard it from the mouth of 'that kind young lady' who was thought to be one of them. I guess that was the main reason. Would it happen in another country in the EU? Surely, if one of the countries governments would like to communicate more clearly and more simply -as the Hungarian government tries to. To make itself understand. Is it a problem? I don't think so. Or it shouldn't be.
Jekatyerina, -, -
This article was written in demagogic style of fidesz!
Do you remember who was the ambassador of Czech Republic in Vienna? Have you ever seen the film made from Hrabal's novel "Postrizny ceskoslovensky spisovatel"?
Barabas, Budapest, Hungary
The question should be put "how come that a woman of 28 - without any previous experience in governmental affairs and international relations - can be appointed as Spokesperson of the Hungarian Government?" Would it happen in another Member State of the European Union?
Marta Turi, Budapest,
This is a nice story about a pretty lady who could n`t make her career in the political sphere but as a youth Hungarian i suggest to rather talk about the more important things during these days in Hungary such as making the medical service wreck and the people whom tied themself up in knots thanks for the post communist-liberal Government!
Peter H-D, Vienna, Austria
This woman is a bad joke. A talented one, but still just a bad joke.
Anyway, I doubt she will pass the national security profile check, giver her husband's business relations with mobsters.
But if she passes, that will be a prominent indication of political dependance at the national security services.
I think she should just say "no thanks" and leave the limelight in grace.
Kata Marton, Budapest, Hungary
Dear Demcsak, why did it take so long to withdraw from the Government position? Thank God to the vocal opposition to the ruling party, these arrogant ex-communists and their privilaged offspring learned at least one lesson that will teach them that they cannot have everithing they want in present day Hungary.
g.b.kovacsics, Milton FL, USA
You have a truly biased view of things. While Ms. Demcsak is no literary giant, and frankly who cares if she was a "lingerie model". But bringing up the "arrogance of the new rich" very conveniently tied to "Ferenc Gyurcsany the Prime Minister is an ex-Communist youth leader" was rather heavy handed. Just remember after WW II who were the new leaders in occupied Germany? Former Nazis (at least most of them) who played minor (?) roles during the Hitler regime. Oh, by the way Viktor Orban, who you seem to admire, was also the member of the same orgabization as Mr. Gyurcsany KISZ. (Communist Youth Federation) not to mention Mr. Orban Sr. who was the PARTY SECRETARY (not a minor position) at the XIII th. District of Budapest. Your tieing Ms. Demcsak to your lopsided views is a joke and not becoming of a publication such as yours.
Peter, Massapequa, NY, USA
As a Hungarian citizen, I can tell that Mrs Demcsák lives in a different world than others, and she really can't understand the collective indignation caused by her words.
After receiving dozens of comments to blogpost, she erased the post which was the worst step she could make.
She is not just arrogant, and snob, but clearly incapable of fulfilling the requirements of a spokeswoman. She'd better resign!
Peter, Nyíregyháza ,
Have you not noticed the Communism did not have any morale. They lied, cheated and stole goods from the people and government. The current Hungarian government, who is mostly made up from the former regime and their followers, at one time Communist party members. Thus if they elect such of lady shall we call her to be the speaker well it only reflects the real value of the current govenment and not the Hungarian people.
Bela, budapest , Hungary
Can you imagine a woman like this in the British political life??? I don't think so...But nowdays in Hungary with a prime minister like Ferenc Liar Gyurcsany she is the perfect match...
Katinka Szakacs, West Palm Beach, USA
