A devout Dutchman has spent two years and a million euros rebuilding Noah’s Ark after a dream that the Netherlands was suddenly submerged under water.
Johan Huibers, 48, a believer in the literal truth of the Bible, made his replica three storeys high and filled it with life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles and zebras – all two-by-two.
At 230ft (70m) long it is around half the length of the biblical vessel described in Genesis. But Johan’s Ark is drawing crowds to his home town of Schagen, 27 miles (45km) north of Amsterdam, from where he plans to sail it around the Dutch canal system to teach children about the Bible.
“I had a dream that Holland will become flooded. The next day, I found a book about Noah’s Ark in the bookshop, and since then, my dream has been to build the ark,” he said. “The design is by my wife, Bianca. She didn’t really want me to do this at all, but she said ‘If you’re going to anyway, it should look like this’.”
Noah is said to have kept seven pairs of most domesticated animals and one breeding pair of all other creatures – as well as his wife, three sons and three daughters-in-law – on his boat for almost a year while the world was flooded.
The only live creatures on Johan’s Ark are a collection of farmyard animals which form a petting zoo for children. He has also installed a 50-seat theatre showing film clips. While the biblical boat was built from “gopher wood”, the Dutch version is made from a mixture of American cedar and Norwegian pine over a steel hull.
As a firm believer in the Genesis story, Mr Huibers does not believe that the entire world will be destroyed by a second flood, despite global warming. God placed the rainbow in the sky as a guarantee against that.
Al Gore, the US Democrat Vice-President turned environmentalist, recently said, however, that the Netherlands was particularly at risk from rising sea levels. Lois Poppema, an American tourist and one of the first to visit, said: “I don’t think the man who made this expected that global warming would become such an issue and that having the ark would be meaningful in the middle of Holland.” Despite her design input, Mrs Huibers was not terribly impressed.
“She doesn’t really like it,” Mr Huibers admitted. “She always says, ‘Why don’t you go dig wells in Ethiopia?’ But she understands this is my dream.”
And God said unto Noah . . .
Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.
A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

God isn't going to flood the entire world again. The flood is referred to as the judgment of water, what comes next is the judgment fire which I believe is a runnaway greenhouse effect. Want to see how?

Many people assume that the bible is not true, but actually they don´t have any proof that it is so. They just say so but have no proof telling so. But those who believe have proof that Jesus answers prayers... An intresseting thing is that the bible (thinking of the Genesis chapter) is x years old. The people on that age had probably NOT any knowledge of how to design boats that would bear a certain amont of cargo in storms without the boat tipping. The boat must be of a certain width so that woould not happen and also the boat can´t be to high also - just as it is described in the bible. So - did Noah get its info from the master arcitect itself (God who really can construct things) or did he make it up himself nearly 5-6000 years ago? I think Noah did make a very good "guessing" how he would have design it elseway so the boat would not perish when it was full-loaded. Boats must be built certain ways so they dont tip if you didn´t know that and i think they missed that knowledge then

Ps 33:8-12 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was [done]; he commanded, and it stood fast. The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Blessed [is] the nation whose God [is] the LORD; [and] the people [whom] he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

"... wood isn't strong enough and they fall to bits. .."
I am interested: is this also on silent waters?
Beyond this, I think God protects his Own plan.

Priceless
>God placed the rainbow in the sky as a guarantee against that.<
He's not a very science'y guy then.
>I guess it is rather pointless to criticise a myth but his answer to the question as to how Noah gathered polar bears, kangaroos, Galapagos tortoises, tigers, lions, landcrabs etc would be of some interest.

Not to mention, there are over 25,000 different kinds of beetle.

For those that do not believe in the bible, ask yourself why the dinosaurs all died out at once, and ask yourself why there is an army lying on the bottom of the east arm of the red sea, recently confirmed (Moses story of crossing the red sea). The Ark was strong enough to be made from gopher wood, even if pine is too weak for that size.
The Bible is true. Many people simply refuse to believe the evidence put before them, as this makes them question their own reasons for rejecting God.
Fraser Burling, Auckland, New Zealand
It's a good job Johan Huibers didn't build an Ark of the size and with the materials described in the Bible. There's a good reason you never see wooden boats of this size - wood isn't strong enough and they fall to bits.
It's an entertaining myth, but it is just that - a myth.

Genetically speaking, rescuing a pair of each different creature on earth cannot prevent the extinction of any individual species(there are moral and biological issues) . Also to make a ship big enough to take a pair of different living creatures on earth and ensure that they all survive would be an impossible task. Apart from the Ark, many more holes and inconsistence can be found from stories contained in the Bible. Some religious people justify the stories by explaining that they should not be taken literally because they are just metaphors. Should the very existence of God be treated in the same category?

I believe God had a purpose in this ark as well. You don't go to that length without something guiding you!

He would, obviously, have collected the animals with God's help.

William Garrett, Harrow,
Very impresive but it does not look very sea worthy. Let's hope that we never have to find out.
F.Bonmati, New Jersey, United States
Why didn't he build a full-size ark? It's even more pointless now, since he can't even claim it looks like Noah's ark, since it's the wrong size.
starling, Lancaster,
Probably one of the most convincing arguments I have heard to date for reclassification of cannabis in Dutch legislation...

Sounds interesting. An artwork of love and devotion!
Perhaps at least the children will come to enjoy the lesson behind it - a symbol of preserving the life on the planet even through the storms or threat of catastrophic global warming.
We need to educate and be educated to act for the improvement of the planet and not just placidly sit in on more seminars on what we should be doing.
