The publicity surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann reached unprecedented levels today with posters being put up across Europe and news emerging that a film of her will be played at the FA Cup Final tomorrow.
As visits to Findmadeleine.com overwhelmed the newly-created website, National Express said that it will put up posters of the abducted four-year-old in bus and coach stations in 27 countries served by the Eurolines coach service network, from Ireland to the Baltic states, and from Sweden down to Morocco.
The sporting world continued to throw its weight behind efforts to track Madeleine. The Football Association said that a video would be shown to fans on the big screens at Wembley Stadium during the match between Manchester United and Chelsea, probably before kick-off and again at half-time.
The film - which has the soundtrack of the Simple Minds hit Don’t You Forget About Me - was earlier screened at the Uefa Cup final between Sevilla and Espanyol in Glasgow on Wednesday.
At the first Test match against the West Indies at Lord’s, Andrew Strauss, the England cricket captain, and his team were wearing yellow ribbons in support of the efforts to find her.
The sporting world has rallied around attempts to find Madeleine, who was abducted from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz more than two weeks ago.
John Terry, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham have all made televised appeals for help and players from Everton, Madeleine’s favourite team, wore T-shirts showing pictures of the youngster before their last game of the season.
The company which runs the Findmadeleine site, Infohost, said it had been unable to cope with demand twice today – page impressions on the homepage have topped 50 million, ten million of them within the last 24 hours, with almost 20,000 messages of support posted, many from the US, Australia, and New Zealand - and are displayed across 374 pages.
The website is now in talks with Microsoft and other partners to increase the site's bandwidth.
Calum MacRae, a director of Infohost who knows Gerry McCann's sister, Philomena, said that his company was passing on all information relevant to Madeleine's whereabouts on to the police.
“It seems that a lot of people don’t like phoning CrimeStoppers so we’re hoping the site may be a way of getting someone to talk.”
“We’re overwhelmed by the attention the site’s getting. Usually it would take one of our sites a month to get 10 million hits, so this is completely unprecedented.”
