It is an ordinary picture of a family enjoying a holiday abroad together. A father sits next to his two daughters on the edge of a swimming pool, the children wearing hats to protect them from the sun.
But for Kate and Gerry McCann it is the last picture they have of their daughter Madeleine, who was snatched from her bed less than eight hours later.
The picture was taken by Madeleine’s mother Kate, 38, on her own camera in the holiday resort of Praia da Luz, Portugal, where they were staying.
It shows Madeleine’s father smiling, wearing sunglasses and looking straight at the camera proudly sitting with his two young daughters by his side.
Next to him in an orange top is his two-year-old daughter Amelie who is a twin with brother Sean.
Beside her is her big sister Madeleine, who was then three but looking forward to her fourth birthday at the end of the family holiday.
Madeleine is shown smiling, wearing a pink smock top, white shorts and a sun hat.
The picture was taken at 2.29pm on May 3 - Mrs McCann’s camera clock is one hour out so the display reads 1.29pm.
Later that evening, before 10pm, Madeleine disappeared.
She had been sleeping in the family’s holiday apartment next to the twins, when she was snatched.
Mr and Mrs McCann were just yards away at the time having dinner and her disappearance has been publicised around the world, but despite an extraordinary campaign to make her image known across Europe there has been no news of her whereabouts for three weeks.
Mr and Mrs McCann, backed by an army of friends and family, remain convinced that Madeleine is alive, 22 days after she disappeared, but they have revealed that they are growing increasingly frustrated with the failure of Portuguese police to find their daughter.

I am an English lady living in Perth Western Australia.I too pray that Madeleines parents will have her safely with them before the end of the year.
Whoever has that little girl please return her to her parents just leave her in a safe place,do not harm her, she is a small child.
To all the other lost children please return them home.
I will pray every day that Jesus keeps his loving arms around these children.I will continue to look at every child in the hope it may be Maddie Mccann.
gillian scates, Perth , Western Australia
If i was kate/gerry McCan i would have said to the world . "give us a lie detector test, we'll show the world our inocence" !
louisa, dewsbury,
It's all disgusting.
These people left their three children unattended. I would expect something like that from uneducated heavily drinking people but not from two doctors who both knew how dangerous it could be for the kids. It's true, if it would be a single mother from council estate noone would be bothered to donate so much money and to make so much fuss of it and her children would be taken away by social services.
Also I think that they spent too much time to attract media attention and collect all this money rather than to find their child. They did not spend a penny in order to find madeleine but now they want to spend it to pay for solocitors!
I believe that they both are involved in some way in her disappearance or death. I pray for that little girl and want her to be alive. But if she is dead and her parents are guilty i want them to die in prison. Their twins should be taken away by social services anyway because they are not normal people and can not be trusted.
Natalie, London,
I just doesn't make sense that they left their children unattended whilst they consumed many bottles of wine. A child could choke to death in minutes and what about baby sitters?, didn't the hotel have baby minders? The couple's actions after the event seemed unusually organized and manipulative. The family and supporters sem to have made a propaganda campaign against the Potugese system and police investigation.
Pat, Lancashire, UK
What a lovely beautiful little girl, and she is smiling and looking happy with her parents and family right up to that tragic night of her disappearance.
I would find it extremely hard to believe that the parents could conduct such a scam towatds the world's population, having harmed their daughter, and equally hard to believe anyone could harm such an angel as Madeline if indeed she has been harmed at all!
I think I would like to continue with the belief that some wanton couple without child, have abducted poor Maddie, but I am growing restless that after all of the media reports she has still not been found. Could anyone conceal anyone let alone a small child, for so long, when all eyes would be on everyone who moved anywhere with any child resembling Maddie.
I don't know what happened to this girl but I am sure it was sinister, and unhealthy for a girl of this age.
Geoff, Market Harborough, Leicestershire
Dear God Almighty in heaven, please i pray that you protect madeline and return her safely to her parents. lord i pray that no harm will be done to her, please give the parents of madeline the comfort and grace in this difficult time, and may all their thoughts and faith be upon you oh lord , Amen.

I believe that new laws on people who kidnap children should be passed that would ensure the safety and awareness of our communities.-too many people are released that should be held indefinitely for their crimes.
Also, I think I would be getting out the bloodhounds literally to help search for this little girl. Animals are used all over the country to help with trailing people. As a christian mother I am praying daily for Maddy and all the children of the world.May God be with you on your search.
Melissa Merida, Cambridge City, Indiana/USA
I pray for the safe return of Madeline. Please God keep her safe - Pls return her to her parents arms.
Leivy, Algonquin, ILL
Child abduction is a sad and grievious matter to all victimized by the crime. This case is even more saddened because it could have been prevented if the parents had not neglected thier child. Perhaps this is why it NEEDS so much attention. So other parents won't be stricken with the same grief. I hope the child returns safely to her home, as all children should. To be loved and cared for.
Lori, South Jordan, UT, USA
I will put my trust in God and Maddie in the palm of his hand and I know he will keep her safe and unharmed. My prayers are for her parents also. I pray they keep the faith and doubt not. God will bring Maddie back to them. I believe, I believe.
Jeanette Davis, Homer , AK/USA
It's unfortunately true that there are many more children missing in the world besides Madeleine -- but how could anyone in their right mind be upset about the fact that this little girl's case is getting a lot of attention? I understand how some people may feel that it's "unfair" for a select few to make headlines while other missing children seem to have been forgotten. But even if only one missing child is brought home because of the media's desire to cover the story and get higher ratings (and let's face it, that's all the media is really concerned about), isn't that better than no children being brought home to safety at all? God bless you, Madeleine, wherever you are, and I pray that your loved ones are given comfort and strength as they struggle to find you.
Natalie, Denver, Colorado, USA
It's a true tragedy when any child goes missing and I do feel for the parents, but why on earth would you leave your children-that young- alone while you had dinner? Also, is there any info as to why she was the only sibling taken?
Sadly, these days parents must be extra cautious and keep their children near. You just can't leave young children unsupervised, period.
Out of all the missing children cases why has this one drawn so much attention? It's sad and almost unfair that all abducted children don't receive such press.
Crystal, USA,
I wish and pray that she is found alive and is reunited with her family. I just don't understand how stupid her parents could be to leave their children in a room alone and at that sleeping. That was just ridiculous of them to think that just because they are a few yards from their hotel makes it okay to leave their children alone. You just made it easier for the preditor to attack his pray. It seems that that man was following their every move.I just don't understand the parents. WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING!!!!! They can't get mad at authorities, they need to get mad at their stupid decision.
CUS, New York, New York
To the McCanns:let's hope that there is still some goodness left in the abductor. GOD puts it in every human being. I pray for the safe return of the little girl. Your child is my child. My child is your child.I have no other words but dont lose faith. She is still your daughter by the grace of GOD.
malebo, johannesburg, south africa
I'm not a religious person but...I really hope God exists because I've been praying a lot for Maddie to return safe to her family. It is a nighmare, the worst for any parent. It has become an obsession to me because every time I can I read the newspaper, watch TV or search on the web for news about Madeleine and I feel frustrated when I see nothing new, it is a very desperate searching. I read ,yesterday that in Spain for example this case hasn't had big headlines, you know Spain is next to Portugal so... well she could be anywhere if she is alive and I really hope she is.
Ampy, Stgo., Chile
Don't you think though with all the publicity going around that it hinders the chance of her being found alive. Maybe the abducter will think that she is too much of a risk and just get rid of her. Maybe that is a why the Portuguese police dont give out to much info.
Being British we like to hear what is going on and as soon as possible but to be honest I don't think it's a good thing. I think the Portuguese police have the right attitude. All be it though, they should still take help from other countries, the other countries would have to do it by their rules anyway so everything would be kept private...
I really do hope she is found alive and safe being a mother of seven kids myself...
Denise, Dundee, Scotland
I would approach well known profilers like the FBI'S John Douglas who has worked on many such cases. Psychics I would also bring in but as the McCann's are both RC's they may not want to do that. As I said in my previous post, I'd be very sceptical of trusting that the police are doing the right thing as regards this investigation. I pray her abductors will release her. She is a small child who cannot identify you. Leave her in a safe place. Wishing the McCanns and their family all the best in their terrible situation. I will do all I can for you from Australia. Please don't trust that any police know what they're doing however. Corruption is rife everywhere. God Bless You, sweet Madeleine. I am like many people and sick with worry and fear over this case. I log on constantly trying to find out news which I've never, ever done with anything in my life. Please consider using mindhunters like John Douglas. Everything is worth a shot.
Jo, Sydney, Australia
I did n't even know there was an International missing children's day.
I so hope Madeleine is found soon. A day in the life of a child is a long time.
But we must do more for all the other missing children. Once lost a childhood cannot be regained.
jane, oxford, uk
I am utterly amazed that this one case has taken up so much media attention. Thousands of children and teenagers go missing every year. This particular child is no more important than any other child that goes missing. I feel more sympathy for all the parents who have not had the benefit of the support and well wishing offered to these parents. Sadly the media do not show this level of interest in other missing children.
Shelley, London, UK
Please think about all the other children in the world other than Maddy who die of hunger, poverty and war!!
shirl, london,
There are a hanfull of people out there that know of Madelines fate - it woud only take one of those people to anonimously tip off the police. This would end the unimaginable suffering of the family and of Madeline herself. Reaching that person will mean that this media campaign must continue and I take my hat off to the McCann's for having the strength to see it through. I would never stop looking untill the day I die if it were my child. If you are that person that knows something, please do the right thing.
Rebecca, watford, UK
As a family of 5 we pray every night for Madeleine's safe return. Prayer is important, and so is all of us doing our part, wherever we live in the world. We live in Colorado, and I check every child that passes me. We must all do that until Madeleine is found.
Noni Stocker, Vail, USA
The situation is very very sad, to say the least. The pain of parents is understandable. The more time is passing, the more difficult it is for Kate and Gerry McCann to bear this event in their minds. However, there is hope!
The voice of one crying in the wilderness, who will listen to it? Kate and Gerry McCann, the parents of the girl, must start praying for the person(s) who abducted their daughter Madeleine. They must remove all the anger, if possible, and accept the situation with meekness, as given from above. This is a great effort and it needs much work, but it may perfectly work. Try to love your enemies and God will act. They have no choice, but to start thinking and acting in God's way, instead of pointlessly going to church. There will be results!
Alex, Aberystwyth, UK
I look for news everyday on Madeline it breaks my heart that she has not been found yet. I can not believe the Portugese police have no leads whatsoever on her. How can someone break into a hotel room and just take a child with no survelance cameras and no witnesses. Where exactly are they looking for her? In their police cars at the station? Have they even questioned the employees of the hotel or surrounding areas? I pray for the safe return of Madeline but every day that goes by her chances are less of being returned safely. My prayers go out to her family and to her. I only hope she is strong and is aware that her family will continue searching for her until she is found.
Shannon Butterfield, Farmington Hills, United States/Michigan
Stewart - sadly, Madeleine is not the only child to have gone missing recently, nor will she be the last. Perhaps the publicity surrounding this case will focus attention on lost and/or abused children generally (the Times also mentioned a Portuguese boy who'd been abducted some years before and ended up being abused on the internet, one of thousands) - but then one might have hoped people would be outraged enough to seek action to alleviate suffering in Darfur, Zimbabwe, Iraq, etc as well. Maybe this one story will make people realise they do actually care about others. Hell, maybe we'll start stringing up dictators and paedophiles. Your comment merely seems spiteful, however. The reasons for the "obsession" with Medeleine are obvious.

Dear Kate & Gerry,
*Everybodys baby*
Your daughter Madeleine is truly an angel, i believe in my heart that she will come back to your family soon. Do not give up hope, continue pray privately and publicly, keep her candle burning. I'm a Catholic myself and have burnt many holy candles in the alter of the blessed virgin for her safe return. Its so dampens my spirit everytime i turn on the TV hoping for good news only to hear the search is still on! Oh how you must feel! I want to personally thank your extended family; uncles, aunts, grandparents for the support they've given you and may God continue to propel this search for Madeleine.
*Any person(s) responsible for Madeleine's dissapearance PLS PLS nobody deserves to suffer like this, her family need her and she needs them too. All they did was take a family holiday to be together and enjoy eacthother - BRING her back to her family*
Madeleine is truly an angel. Kate and Gerry - God bless you and your family. In prayers.
Monica, Aberdeen,
we as a family pray every day for someone somewhere to find this little girl , it is imperative that the media continue to keep the case high profile, everyone everywhere should think ..... could it be my neighbour look for her
keith wright , sutton coldfield, birmingham
Every time these things happens detail of the investigation are not shown until it is over . Funny thing, that the ******* -I have no words to define that being- should know how close the police are just by looking at the papers.
I pray for her every day -in anger, in frustration, in hope.I also pray for Yeremy Vargas. He waa 8 and disappeared from the entrance of his house more than tow months ago. He wasn't so cute as Madeleine, tha news were on the papers for a couple of weeks and than he was forgotten. His parents didn't have the means or the ability to raise sucha a huge support. Let's hope Madeleine's story helps raise awareness on the huge tragedy of missing children.
Elena, Santander/Cantabria, Spain
I just can't understand why the Portuguese Police have declined the help of the British Police. The Brits have had some of the best sniffer dogs in the world on standby since it happened. Dogs that can pick up the slightest scent for up to 28 days after.
Come on, in such a case like this surely when the hand is held out it should be taken. Maybe one of the reasons is if they do take the help they would look at it like defeat but it's not. This is such a high profile case and I suppose they dont want to look like they can't handle it but they have come to a near stand still. These dogs and police from other countries may be able to find clues that were over looked. I suppose it's a bit like doing a jigsaw, you look and look but can't find the piece, get a friend to look and the fresh eyes find it immediately.
So please if anyone from the Portuguese Police are reading this... take the hand, dont cut it off.
Thank you
Denise, Dundee, Scotland
Nothing i have ever heard of in the news has affected me as much as this. Obviously im enraged at whoever has done this to such an innocent little girl but im also angry at the police in portugal. I think they dont have a braincell between them and their incompetence has given madeleines abductor(s) every chance to remain undetected. I dont think the portugese police could run a bath nevermind an investigation of this sort. Yes it is their country..but that is a British child who has been stolen..portugese should step aside and let real professionals take over.
I just truely hope she is found and I think with the correct methods this is still completely possible
Paul S, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Hi!
I agree with Jo and Marcella! I also belive that Madeleine will be found and that it is very important that media write abut it.
And I also agree with Tara, it makes you feel desperate, I also check the news several times a day.
But we can´t give up now, it wouldn´t be right to Madeleine, her family or any other child who has been taken from their family!
I pray for the family and hope that Madeleine will come home soon!!
Lots of love
Ann, Örebro, Sweden
I think the McCann's should put together a reward poster with Madeleine's picture, the amount of the reward and an email address and telephone number, and a fax number - all in large type so they would show up in a reproduced picture printed in a newspaper.
They should go to one of the newpaper websites listing all newspapers and create a complete e-mail list of all newspapers in all countries. With volunteers this could be done in a day or so. Next, they should send out their reward poster every two weeks, hopefully with some incremental reward amount increases so newspapers can justify running it. Several languages would also be helpful - such as Eng, French, Portugeese, Chinese, Arabic, and email addresses for these languages..
I pray she is found soon and think someone somewhere has information..
Emma H., Ottawa, CAN
How about a sting operation, with a seething "perv" by offering double the reward amount to purchase Madeleine?
No one would want to keep her with that much money on offer, even if they were skittish about trying to get the reward money. It couldn't hurt and would spread the word to the undergreound crime scene.
Emma H., Ottawa, CAN
Please, all concerned people, download the banner from Maddie's website and add it to all of your emails. Little things like this can help in keeping this case in the spotlight until she is found. It breaks my heart seeing her happy pictures and knowing the hell that Maddie and her family are now going through, and to know that it could just have easily been my little girl taken is terrifying.
Roland, Perth, Australia
To Ingrid from Manchester: If you intend to castigate someone for their incorrect use of grammar and/or bad spelling, you should really take more care to proof-read your own post first. "It really makes you LOOSE even more ground"?
Sharon, Clonfert,
Does this add anything to the investigation? No! Are there hundreds, if not thousands, of children going missing every year? Yes! I'm afraid that I walk out of the room when this item comes onto the news and tend to skip it in the paper. When there is something new to report I'm quite happy to hear about, but this blanket coverage of nothing has turned me off the whole issue.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
Is this the only child to have gone missing in the last month? What is the reason for this paper's obsession with this one ?
Stewart, Piacenza, Italy
Dear Sir;
You seem to try and portray an mature angle to all this Madelaine McCann saga. But, it seems, THE TIMES, not content with the predicament she is already going through, you also intended to get people to FinE her?? (See your comment Pasted below).
I know you have downsized your paper over the years in order to compete with the traditional low-class English papers, but I don't think you should be downsizing your grammar, spelling Editor costs. It really makes you loose even more ground!
"Bring Madeleine Home (official website)

Ingrid, Manchester, UK..elele
I agree, Marcella.I think the public have to keep the interest in this case going and assist the McCanns in any way they can. I am donating a small amount from my pay to them to help them continue their vigil and search. I pray that you are right that she will be found. Whatever happens it has made me determined to fight for all children of abduction now. Even if the media does drop the story, I'll continue whatever I can do from Australia.
Jo, Sydney, Australia
I beleive Madeleine WILL be found but it would be mainly thanks to the efforts of the media and general public who I hope will not let Madeleine disappear from the spotlight as so many other missing children have in the past.
Marcella, Liverpool, England
Can the police do a composite sketch or computer drawing showing what Madeleine might look like with different hair color, short hair or boy's clothing? Just in case her appearance has been altered.
This case has me feeling desperate, I check the news every day and probably will until we know what happened.
Tara, Honolulu, USA
This is the most widely publicized case probably in history, and certainly has the largest reward in history, it just may be too late in Portugal.
But I would caution the parents never to give up hope and to continue to look. It's going to be very hard to secret that little girl, and it's going to be very hard to keep that secret either publicly or privately.
We have to find Madeleine and they have to take Private police from UK or United States!! As soos as possibly!
Eva, Thessaloniki, Greece
I am so disturbed by this case. I am so far away, but feel ever so awful for the family of this angel. God be with the family and the young girl.

meron, ottawa, canada
The manner of the Portugese investigation, compared to what we are used to seeing in Britain when such a terrible thing happens, seems truly shocking. No appeals for sightings, no mention of suspect vehicles, no clue of who was even on the street at the time of the abduction. To what end is secrecy necessary for such matters? One can understand why names of suspects are not given or details of arrests/interviews etc, but to not give details of general witness statements, which could trigger memories, is appalling. Could it be that given they rarely have to deal with such cases, their law has never been tested adequately in this regard? Will this case lead to an eventual enquiry into the role of their secrecy laws in hindering investigation and outcome? In the meantime, dear Madeleine is still missing and the McCanns remain desperate for news or any sense of impetus. Can't the UK Government do anything to galvanise or influence the investigation on behalf of the McCanns?
Helen Walker, Brentford, Middx
this is every parents worse nightmare!!!!
Dear God please please bring little beautiful Madeleine back home safe and sound into the arms of her parents Kate and Gerry Mccan!!!
This has haunted me since the day after it happened, i found out on when i switched on the news and have never felt such a sea of overwhelming emotions, sometimes sheer grief , sometimes anger at the perpertrators to snatch such an innocent child from a loving family and sometimes utter helplessness but for the past weeks i have also learnt to hope and hope that little Madeleine returns safely to her parents .. i know i am not alone and Kate and Gerry you are not alone, your baby has become the baby of thousands and thousands of people who's hearts and lives your precious little angel has touched both in the uk and worldwide...with this hope she WILL return safely into your arms .. have faith and keep praying for i do along with the nation.. god bless you all.... xxxxxx
Kaneez, Warrington,
Dear Kate and Gerry,
My daughter also is the parent of a 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old twins (boy and girl), and I can so deeply relate to your loss. Though I'm not usually religious, I pray every day for the return of Madeleine. I would do anything to help in your search, including opening my home to your family or detectives. Please let me know if there is anything I can do here in the States or actually anywhere to expedite Madeleine's return.
Truly yours,
