The parents of Madeleine McCann left behind their two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie, yesterday and travelled to Rome to ask the Pope to pray for the return of their daughter.
As Kate and Gerry McCann left Portugal for the first time together since their eldest child disappeared 27 days ago, it emerged that the police had issued an incorrect description about the height of her possible abductor.
The mistake has led to many people in Praia da Luz assuming that the abductor is most likely to be a foreigner because the description is taller than the average Portuguese man.
A family source said: “The police have made a mistake. The description given was of a man who is 5ft 10in but they have somehow managed to get it wrong. The description given [by the witnesses] was 5ft 7in.
“It seems the description was lost in translation. What has happened is that the police have given a description of quite a tall man when they should have been talking about someone who is relatively short. It is a big mistake and it is not good enough.”
The correct description appears in the Portuguese language appeal but most residents and holidaymakers in Praia da Luz are English and the media have followed the description in the English translation. Concerns have also been raised about police treatment of Madeleine’s favourite toy, a pink Cuddle Cat, which her mother, a locum GP, has kept with her ever since the little girl disappeared and carried with her on the plane to Italy. It is feared that the toy may have carried potentially useful DNA evidence that was not gathered in the early stages.
The McCanns believe that today’s general audience with Pope Benedict XVI could have a “huge bearing” on whether their daughter is returned.
The couple will have a few moments to talk to the Pope. Mrs McCann will give him a photograph of Madeleine and ask him to pray for her return.
Mr McCann said: “It is a huge privilege and means so much to us not only spiritually but because it could have such a massive impact on the chances of finding Madeleine.
“It’s difficult to have something bigger than this. It could have a huge bearing on whether we can get Madeleine back.”
Mr McCann admitted that he and his wife felt nervous but were determined to remain positive because the meeting could “make such a difference”.
Many of the thousands of people who will attend the general audience in St Peter’s Square are expected to wear the yellow and green ribbons that have become the symbol of the international campaign to find Madeleine. Mr and Mrs McCann will sit in the front row, known as the prima fila, which is normally reserved for visiting heads of state or other dignitaries. They will be among just 25 people introduced to the Pope and he is expected to mention Madeleine “prominently” in his prayers.
The couple, both 38, flew to Rome in a private jet lent by Sir Philip Green, the billionaire owner of Bhs and Topshop.
While the couple are in Rome their twins are being looked after by Mr McCann’s sister, Trish Campbell, and her husband, Sandy. Mrs McCann said: “Leaving them is really hard, I have never left them before. From a selfish point of view we would have liked to have had them here as a comfort. But I am sure it is not the best thing for them. This trip is about Madeleine.”

As they say in "Shawshank Redemption" once you surrender hope, you give up living. There IS still hope for Madeleine McCann, and her parents, and with hope comes action and alertness. Without it we stop looking; stop caring. We'd all love to see how the media can do something good for a change, wouldn't we, and I have every faith we'll find this girl.

The bottom line is that the child's blood/DNA was found in the trunk of the rented car. The police could not possibly have planted it there because where would they have gotten it? Yes they are under pressure to solve this but the body is missing.
The only other possibility is tthrough a bizarre coincidence, the McCanns rented the same car as the killer or the person who disposed of the body. It is a very small place...probably not too many rental cars. OR the killer, paying close attention to the McCanns, planted evidence in the car in order to frame them.
If the child was accidently killed by the parents, they still could have called police or an ambulance and reported it. There is obviously no history of child abuse, so what would be the problem? An accident is an accident.

Does anyone think these two have Munchausen's by proxy? Something not quite right about audiences and European tours.

Psychics? You must be joking, those frauds simply exploit people's grief to promote their own nonsense, and are worse than useless. And as for 'feeling' she is still alive, more nonsense, you have no way of knowing and your 'feelings' about it are totally irrelevant.
And then of course, prayer. Does 'God' really need to be asked? Will prayer change its mind and have it thinking 'hmm, yes, I'll let them find Madeleine now that they've asked the pope to pray for her'. It might make them (and the assorted grief-junkies out there) feel better, but it will have no practical effect on the outcome. The only things that will have any result one way or the other are the police investigations or someone getting lucky and spotting the kidnapped girl somewhere.
I can't fault the parents on this, they are doing all they can to keep their daughter's plight in the public eye, as any parent would.

I admire the courage of Madeline's parents. I have also been praying for her & I hope she is found soon. What is EUROPOL (European Police Agency) doing if anything? or other organisations in Europe?

I thought a reporter from the Sunday Mirror had the case sussed. What need is there for Divine (or Psychic)Intervention when the British Press (if you count The Mirror in that definition) are onto things.
eric campbell, harrogate, uk
A friend of mine, who is a psychic, gave me valuable information regarding MADELEINE's hidden place .I rang CRIMESTOPPERS to pass the information and their answer was that they did not take any details coming from PSYCHICS and hung up on me!
MONICA, ESSEX,
I would also like to encourage the McCanns to talk to and visit other religious leaders from all faiths to ensure the message is clear that abducting children is morally, ethically and religiously wrong. It is only through the help and watchfullness of all peoples from all countries, not just those with a strong Roman Catholic belief, that this little girl will be returned to her parents. I hope and pray that those involved in this awful case have the strength and resources to investigate all sightings and all avenues to facilitate the return of Madeleine, safely, to her parents and young brother and sister.
Good luck and my thoughts are with you, Madeleine.
Stephen, Amstelveen,
I hope the McCans dont read any of the insensitive and heartless emails. last night I spoke to a friend who suppied nannies to Mark Warner apparently the guests could not ask a nanny to babysit ,the night creche was the only option. Trying to settle 3 under 3 aged children then wake them later is not ideal and many parents on previous holidays have done exactly the same as the McCanns reassured by the security of the resort and the nannies would walk around checking for any sounds from the children. The love the Portugese and Spanish show for children is in such contrast to the UK that this could also be a factor in lowering their guard. Forgive them, their consequences now are quite horrific enough without self righteous cruelty.

Harnad, the McCanns are Roman Catholics. It's quite natural they should desire an audience with the highest representative of their faith for guidance and for media attention for Madeleine. I wouldn't begrudge them any Hollywood deal or private jet with what they're going through. Steve, it's easy to focus on the Catholic Priests who have been paedophiles and not on the genuine many devout Catholics. I think the McCann's have been tremendously strong with their faith. I agree with Traci, that they should involve a reputable psychic who has experience in this sort of case and profilers if they haven't already. I hope that the audience with the Pope gives them more strenth to continue the battle to bring Madeleine home.
Jo, Sydney, Australia
Am I the only one who sees the irony in them going to visit the man previously in charge of covering up the Catholic church's paedophiles?
Mark Smith, London, UK
i don''t no if this is gonna help madeleine back home because now i read about that the police give a wrong description of a suspect what are they doing outhere in portugal don't they want to find that little girl because evrything they do is wrong i begin to think that she isn't alive anymore because all of the publicity around it if it's true and he took her on a boat then think again what wood you do he can never go outside whit madeleine because evrybody nows her i hope that i got it wrong because there's nothing in the world that i won't then madeleine's being found i am a mother of a four year old girl this is the wurst nightmare that can happen to a parent

Just to wish the McCann's all the best.

I admire the courage of Madeline's parents in their search for their beautiful daughter. I have been praying also & I hope she is found soon. What are organisations like EUROPOL (European police organisation) doing in the meantime? Have the spanish police conducted any kind of search?
Kevin Gunning, Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Hope she's found safe and well.. However the cynic in me wonders about use of private jets, audience with the pope etc.. I wonder if they've already signed a hollywood deal...
Hamad , Thornton Heath, England
I find it ironic that the chances are their daughter has been kidnapped by a paedophile, and yet they're going to the Catholic church for guidance. The same Catholic church who covered up evidence of systematic child abuse by their own priests for years.
Steve Lee, Gillingham, England
Are there psychics involved at all? I don't know how the McCanns feel about this option - I'm not a particularly religious person myself, but I have such a strong feeling that Madeleine is still alive. If it were my daughter I'd want to try every possible option... and open my mind to all possibilities. I wish the family all my hopes, feelings and humanity and wish so much that their daughter comes home safely and life for all the family returns to normal as soon as possible. For all the sick people in the world let there remain many more who are good.
Traci Rochester, Bristol, England
I believe this is a good move when times are hard we should always turn to prayer. I have been praying for their family and I am waiting for further news on Madeleine.
