STRASBOURG An EU-wide ban on cat and dog fur imports will be enforced by the end of next year after a European Parliament vote.
Overwhelming backing for the move comes after eight years of campaigning by celebrity supporters including Heather Mills and the rock star Rick Wakeman.
The ban is predicted to save the lives of up to two million cats and dogs in China, a prime source for pelts that are usually stripped from the animals live. Video footage of the killing was a key part of the crusade by Ms Mills.
The Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson said that he was travelling to Beijing to ask the authorities to end the trade now that markets in 27 European countries are about to be closed off.
He said: “There are still many shoppers in the UK and the rest of Europe blissfully unaware that the items they buy are actually made from the skins of cats and dogs.”

The sooner this trade is stopped the better. Whether or not you agree with using products from animals is irrelevant since it is the way in which the Chinese mistreat and slaughter these animals which is the funamental problem. Their lack of concern for animal welfare is just the tip of the iceberg for this cruel nation. If you look at how they treat their animals, it tells you everything you need to know about their human rights record - they should never have been given the Olympics. They simply don't deserve a pat on the back from the rest of the World.

I am absolutely horrified by this brutal trade, it is high time the EU actually did something about it. Thanks to Heather Millsand Rick Wakeman who worked tirelessly to keep this cruelty in the public eye.
I hope that the ban is fully implemented and nothing slips through the net.

This goes hand in hand with Tesco opening in Bejing selling live turtles and toads. I have told Tesco I won't shop there again and I hope others will follow suit. The chinese seem to have no concern for animal welfare and I certainly won't visit there. I wish I could avoid buying Chinese goods but it's almost impossible.

China stop and think now, you are not only torturing and killing these highly intelligent and beautiful creatures but alianating yourselves and undermining any respect that we have for you. I for one wont be attending your Olympics or stepping foot in your country until you address this.

This is excellent news. Now perhaps there is a way forward to stop China from farming tigers, bears and other animals.

The most effective way to stop this trade is to educate the public not to buy the products. It is much easier than to ask the Chinese not to satisfy a market demand.

What is it that makes cats and dogs different than sheep or cows? We import hides from all kinds of animals, snake skins are also very often stripped from the animal whilst it is still alive.
I love dogs (dog person) but see no reason why we should ban the import of their hide. It seems like such a hypocrisy, the only difference between dog hides and leather is that dogs are cuddly and cows are not. People should be made aware of what they are buying and not buy it if they dont agree with wearing a dog. I certainly wouldnt wear it myself.
I don't want to see any ban at all, because animal skins are very useful. However, if they are going to ban it, then ban all! Surely a snake has the same fundamental rights as a cat?
In my opinion, this is just another case of politicians caving in to pressure from uninformed people that are clearly not intelligent to look past the cuddly-VS-not cuddly argument.

I saw this on the news last night and it was horrifically upsetting, even the notion that I've inadvertedly partook in supporting something so vile makes my skin crawl. It cannot happen soon enough. Bring it on.
Yasmin Selena, London, England
I can only hope that ALL civilised nations ban the importation of these furs, no matter where they are sourced.
