Greece was bracing itself for 45C (113F) temperatures today as a record-breaking heatwave was set to peak after causing hundreds of deaths in southern and central Europe.
Five hundred Hungarians have already died in the highest ever temperatures recorded in the country, while dozens of forest fires have destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres in the region's second heavwave of the summer.
The top temperatures today were expected in central and southern Greece, including Athens, which has already suffered its hottest June in a century. Three deaths were recorded in Corfu yesterday as the elderly struggled to cope with the heat. The Foreign Office is warning holiday-makers attempting to escape the rain in the UK to take extra precautions.
The Greek Government warned people to restrict their movements and stay at home wherever possible. Further forest fires and electricity cuts are predicted. More than a thousand additional fighfighters have been dispatched to fires in northern Greece, while 24-hour fire patrols were carried out across the country.
“The firefighters are really overstretched. It’s an open secret that the majority of the fires are started by property developers, but it’s very difficult to prove,” said John Carr, Athens correspondent of The Times. “There will be luxury villas springing up in then exact places where the fires have struck in the next year or two.”
Tourists in Italy are also being urged to beware of wildfires that have killed four along the Adriatic coast.
Up to a thousand people were forced into the sea, carrying babies and all their possessions, by flames that were encroaching onto the beach in the Perschici region of Puglia.
Two people were burned alive in their car and two others were suffocated by the smoke on a nearby beach. The army has been called in to help evacuate four thousand people from the coast as the fire spread.
“In Rome the heat is terrible, the Romans are staying inside during the day, but the tourists are still out,” said Sarah Delaney, a Times reporter in Rome. “Everybody has a bottle of water, everybody has a hat and there are hundreds of people gathered around the fountains and sneaking a foot into the water.”
In Hungary, the authorities are counting the cost of temperatures that hit 41.9C (107.4F) in the southern city of Kiskunhalas – the highest ever recorded in the country.
Ferenc Falus, the chief medical officer, said in the last week the heat in central Hungary “contributed to the early death of 230 people, which nationally means about 500 deaths”.
Most of the deaths were attributed to heatstroke, cardiovascular problems and other illnesses aggravated by high temperatures.
Bulgaria also reached its highest ever temperature this week and neighbouring Romania has reported at least 12 deaths. Romanian authorities said the heat has resulted in 19,000 people being admitted to hospital, most often with respiratory problems.
The heatwave is due to peak this week and then begin to ebb away, although there is very little rain forecast for much of southern Europe.

Come and enjoy our "Dry heat" in Scottsdale Arizona. This year a goodly number of days 42C to 46C. This weak in our monsoon season it'll only be 36/37C.
I was in un-airconditioned Europe in June/July 2005/6 with your high humility, it's the humility that brings you low, it was awful.
Just think of us in the winter, when you're cold and damp or knee deep to a tall Indian in snow.

Please don't let your standards slip... Since when is Hungary a Balkan state?
Joe, Philadelphia, United States
We seem to be realy isolated as an Island currently devastated by flooding amongst our European counterparts and Neighbours where deadly heatwaves are rampaging and killing hundreds, literally. I never knew the situation was this crucial, it's unbelievable. The climate has changed irreversibly, and whether it can be argued that it is purely due to our abuse of the planet or other, more religious reasons, we can be certain that something on a global scale is happening. R.I.P. to all the victims.
Nawaaz Ramjanee, Basildon, Essex, England
Thank goodness for Peter Vine. Hungary is not only not in the Balkans, it's not in Eastern Europe. It's in Central Europe. But just as all Asian countries tend to get lumped together so do all countries who happen to be east of Vienna.
sophia buckingham, king's lynn, england
Many of Greece's worst fires started in mountainous regions, totally unsuitable for development. So much for the belief that they get started by greedy developers. Their are likely caused by nationalist extremists from Albania, Turkey (Grey Wolves) or FYROM. They are acts of terrorism aiming to cause long term damage to Greece's economy. Wake up and smell the coffee boiling over people!

The trouble is that the Planet is treated by most, not all, humans like a rental car, i.e. many do not care how they drive it or look after it because they will simply take it back at end of rental and never see it again. Well they treat the Planet on the basis that they will not be around when the S hits the fan and thus they think "why bother with looking after the planet" . THAT is the attitude that we need to get over and it will take a politician and people all combined to save the planet because otherwise the good work of many will be undone by the few (Countries or People). Personally I think that we will get the to very edge of catastrophe before enough people come onboard the "save the planet" campaign and that will make it very hard.

40º plus is extremely hot but we in Britain can get temperatures in the 30s so when are we going to get our share of that heat?
Philip, Manchester, England
Hungary is not in the Balkans.

Don't drive.... simple. No emission, no pollution. But no one wants to listen...it seems we (they) are quite happy to fry their own children. How sad.

The sun is not on a hot cycle, K. Please stop making things up.
Mike, Boston, Massachusetts
Scientific fact the sun is on a hot cycle. There is even warming on mars and I don't think my car caused that. The earth has always cycled up and down in temperatures and I think this carbon footprint crap is just that... A bunch of crap... Money motivated mongels and scientists trying to scare and blame the poor people of this earth. Well the warming is real and it is only going to get hotter. The bible says this is going to happen. It was written two thousand years ago. Thats the fact of the matter. When you see these signs begin to happen, lift up your head because your redemption draweth nigh. If you haven't excepted Christ Jesus as your savior you may want to consider doing so....

Nico Hines should go back to school for geography lessons! Hungary is not a Balkan state, it is in Central Europe.
Juli Davis, Maidenhead,
hi
what i think about th heatwave, it's not dangerous yet. It will be pretty soon. Sooner than lots of us think... Sad, but that what we made to earth. you made your bed, you sleep in it... The disturbing thing is the people, who's comfort is more important, than anything else. Selfish... Stupid behaviour... No, i don't want walk, going by public transport, i want drive... that's the problem... mental problem. Nobody really realises, its not one Chimney, exhaust pipe, or whatever causing th glasshouse effect, but all. everyone of us is responsible for it... for us
