Asian masseuses working on French Riviera beaches face a police crack-down after becoming popular among holidaymakers but a headache for their Gallic counterparts.
The action follows claims from the French Council of Masseurs and Physiotherapists that the mainly Chinese newcomers are illegal, unhygienic and even dangerous. Teams of Chinese women first appeared on exclusive, private beaches in Cannes, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins last month, offering camphor oil massages for about €20 (£13). The local newspaper, Nice Matin, said that most beachgoers found the idea “very good”.
Michel Durand, head of the local branch of the French Council of Masseurs and Physiotherapists, demanded police intervention to stop what he described as unauthorised massages.
He said: “You can only practise massage in France if you have a state diploma and are registered with the local prefecture. That is not the case with the Asian masseuses.” He added that the maximum sentence for “illegally practising medicine” was two years in prison and a €30,000 fine.
Mr Durand said that the new masseuses had “obviously received some form of training, but not much. I have watched them and they massage in quite a violent way. I had to intervene to stop one because she was hammering the customer’s cervical bones.”
Police have begun chasing the masseuses away from the seafront after complaints from physiotherapists. Three were arrested in Cannes and detained for a day before being released.

get a life - the content of your face moisturiser and your shampoo bottle is probably causing more harm. I am disappointed that France has not embraced alternative therepy with a little more enthusiasm or is it the same old story - they cannot stand a little competition.
I have practiced Indian Head Massage and Body Massage in the UK before coming here and would like to set up here - not allowed to use the word massage - the 'Kine' will not allow it - and no one semms to be able to tell me if my IHHT/VTCT qualification is even recognised.
PS - there is a distinct divide between someone who wants or needs massage treatment for health reasons and someone who just wants a massage to feel a good and lift their spirits a little.

It's not a matter of foreign worker: â...(they) obviously received some form of training, but not much...".
If they hurt you while practising ?
a state diploma is required to be sure that your practice is safe, at least according to the French standard.
"the dress does not make the monk" (sorry for the google translation) as we said.
Manu, Paris,
I guess that's globalization, riviera beaches becoming more and more like Phuket, and Phuket like the Riviera.
For Sarah MILTON, french economy is not doing badly at all, as you may like to think, the unemployment rate has never been so low for 25 years (and is constantly decreasing), anyway, come and work in France.

I would agree with Mr Durand. My husband and I were in Cannes for a week in June and were plagued by hawkers of everysort. I watched those Asian women giving head, body and foot massages and wondered what if any training they had. I was surprised that people did not question the content of the oils they were using.

Dangerous. For a moment I thought I was reading the humor column.

Another example of France not tolerating foreign workers. And they wonder why their enconomy is doing so badly?
I love France and would live there if someone would give me a decent job!!
