A firm of private detectives that hired psychics to help the hunt for Madeleine McCann is being investigated by police for allegedly breaking Portuguese laws on criminal cases.
The company, Strongwood, claims that it is being funded by donations from more than 100,000 people to carry out inquiries into the disappearance of Madeleine from her bed in the resort of Praia da Luz 114 days ago.
However, Portuguese detectives have contacted officers in the Netherlands complaining that the company has broken laws that mean that only police can investigate criminal cases.
Strongwood, which is registered with the Dutch Ministry of Justice as a private investigation company, said that it had received donations totalling more than ¤a team of<NO>three private detectives, an expert in children with a “special disorders” and a person with “special abilities” to Praia da Luz at end of last month.
A report of its findings concluded that Madeleine could have died before 7pm on the night that she went missing. Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have insisted that she was alive at 9pm. The company also claimed that the child was killed in her apartment before being taken to a beach in a white van where her body was dumped.
Nico van den Dries, chief executive of Strongwood, said that the company had been sharing information with Portuguese detectives and had not been told it was an offence to investigate criminal cases.
“We were asked to look at the case because some clairvoyants from America and the Netherlands were giving evidence to the Portuguese police and they were not following them up,” he said. “We are just doing it for the \ the expenses. We have been co-operating with the Portuguese and they have not said it is against the law.”
Inspector Olegário Sousa, of the Polícia Judiciária, said: “The investigation in Portugal only can be done by police forces. As the collection of funds was done in a foreign country, only the police in Netherlands can pursue what is clearly a fraud. No private detectives had worked with us or with our British colleagues.”
Willem Melius, from the Politie Zaanstreek-Waterland in the Netherlands, said: “In \ Netherlands the investigation of crimes is for justice and police but in case of missing persons it is different (but only inside the country). As soon as they discover it to be a crime they should alert the police. If Strongwood appears not to obey the rules the Justice Department will take steps.” Dutch police are already investigating a letter and map sent to an Amsterdam-based newspaper, De Telegraaf, which claimed to identify the location of Madeleine’s grave in the Algarve. Portuguese police searched the site but found no trace of Madeleine.
Madeleine’s father yesterday attacked police leaks that have fuelled “preposterous” speculation about what happened to his daughter. Mr McCann said he was disappointed that so much information had made its way into the public domain.

There is something very very odd about this whole case.
Maddie´s parents stay for months in Portugal, but at the moment the police name them as suspects they run back to England. How can that be ? Suspects aren´t allowed to suddenly leave the country. The whole thing stinks. Her parents lied about how long they left their kids alone. They put up a Website where MILLIONS are donated, and the millions went where ? Kids, unfortunately, go missing all the time and nobody has yet had this sort of coverage. Behind the scenes there is something more than corruption. If Kate and Gerry love their kids SO much, how could they have left their twins out of their sight for months? As a mother I´m trusting my gut feeling.

there seems to be a lot of offense from people in Portugal thinking this is a bad reflection on their country. This should not turn political. I little girl is missing, maybe dead, and this is the saddest thing. She needs finding and people get frustrated when nothing happens, and are quick to blame the nearest when things go wrong. Everybody want to know what happened, and the truth; I think the main problem is the Portugese Police do not say what is happening in the way the British do, and there is a lot of bad lies reported in one paper which causes great upset; this gives the bad feeling between countries.
We are 2 seperate nations who do things differently so this is difficult to accept, but I am sure everybody wants to find Madeleine, and we pray alive, but even if not at least her family can have closure; it is the not knowing that makes this even worse and I am sure you will all join me in praying the hunt is over very soon.

Ian, like in all European countrys (yours included), no body besides police forces can investigate a crime of missing people. Yes...a crime.

I have read in lots of newspapers, that the hired car that belonged to Madeleines parents and the car keys had blood specks on them. This is of course not fact but speculation. I also read that Robert Murat went to the car hire firm in a rush and state of panic to get the hired car for the Mccanns earlier before Robert Murat was a suspect. Maybe Mr Murat was in a hurry because he needed the car before giving the hired car to the Mccanns. I just can not see that Kate and Gerry would murder their child and go back to resume their dinner party as if nothing had happened. Some body has to be involved with this callous act.

I think that offending the Portuguese people and police is just wrong and arrogant. Now, why the lab results are not ready yet? I lived for some time in the U.K. and I just do not believe there is a cover up by the British authorities and press. Here in Portugal they say that this is the case and that Gordon Brown's press assessor being simultaneously the press assessor for the McCann sugests it. I just do not believe in that. But I begin to need reassurance: I am needing that the lab results are given to the Portuguese police so that the investigation can continue. Note that the public feeling that the McCann have criminal guilt in the case is stronger and stronger in Portugal.
Fernando, Lisboa, Portugal
If everyone is so interested in closing this case isn't it time to pressure the Birmingham Lab to disclose the results obtained with the forensics evidence. It's a very ironic thing to have most of UK condemning the Portugal led investigation when it is more apparent the inneficiency of their own labs. Regarding Mr James from Illinois, I thank you for that wise advice you gave to people like you: stay clear of Portugal! That's good because we don't have and really don't need paranoid people coming over.
Luis, Lisboa, Portugal
It's wonderful that in Portugal, it is not automatically assumed by the police that the parents are at fault for whatever happened to their child. In America, the parents are blamed first, and all investigation is aimed toward proving them guilty. If it turns out that someone else caused the child to be missing, no apologies are ever issued to the parents, and no recompense given them for the thousands of dollars they had to spend in legal costs.

I agree, money is obviously involved with it. Lotsof things are going on. Instead of assuming things, why dont they just go out and fin her instead of sat in a room doing nothing other than plannin what cold of happened to her or where she is now.
If it wasn' for all the faffing around an police messing around n not doing their job properly, maybe she could be safe and sound.
there has been many reprts of seeing her. NOT ONE of them has been followed up correctly or any footage has not been asked for of the chid and parents acting suspicious. the polce just sit there n let t blow over. now if it was their child that had gone missing(a memer of the police force) they wud be searching every meter2 of tis earth to find their child. My thought basically is. get off their lazy arse and do some work instead of sat aroundwith a cup of coffee ad drawing board with a few note pands making it look like your doing something.

James, we are really sorry you don't come and visit us here in Portugal. Illinois people are the ones who give us the bread to feed, Portugal won't survive without you!
Teresa G., Lisbon, Portugal
Why has the disappearance of a child taken second place to the system of finding her? Surely, every door was knocked in the neighbourhood and everyone questioned as to their movements, all airports and terminals passports checked and all paths and waterways scoured? Police dogs trackers what ever it takes! This investigation is continuing to the letter of the law, but what about the spirit - and if Portuguese rights are a little damaged, better that than lose another child in similar fashion! I hope the McCanns find their little girl, and that Madeline is returned to them safe and sound.
All my prayers

Why donât you ask the Birminghamâs Laboratory (witch took the material for analyses) for the delay: âWhy after this time we donât have an answerer?â
If that happen with a Portuguese institution I can imaged what you can say and write about the Portuguese behaviour.
I listened at the news, that it might be a politic pressing for that case. There is a chance that this can be true?
I hope that the true can come out.
I hope that Madeleine is alive!
Lúcia Figueiredo, Lisbon, Portugal
Whilst in Praia da Luz there were posters everywhere urging people to search for her, that means observe, inspect and physically look, and check again. It means the locals put up the posters in hairdressers, shops and cafes and were active in searching on their hands and knees, some as old as 80.
Are these people and those who went to the resort being a hinderance or a help as I saw precious little of police searching the reclaimed building sites, fenced off and unoccupied flats. I did see them leaning over the counter in the early hours of the morning talking to a hotel porter and receptionist.
It is a sad business when the elderly search for a child they never knew, never saw and who do so out of their own funds to find Madeleine who may still be trapped in some vacant villa that a maid or service worker left open near to the playpark.
Only time will tell if Madeleine simply walked out to the park and got lost in a warren of flats that all look like hers.
Paula , On location, UK
Someone high up knows something. There has already been curruption identified, in its police force over another missing childs case...Remember? No-one can fumble things up this badly in a case. I think Madeleine is alive yet they dont want the investigation to get any closer to them. Money involved ??? ln my mind this is likely.
Kylie, munich,
It so frustrating, so much speculation..I can't help but feel that there must be MORE they could do to find the monsters who carried out such an atrocity. PLEASE DO JUSTICE
Helena, Madrid, Spain
Is time the lab give the results to Portuguese police.
peolpe in UK no want know the true. In Portugal everybody knows the results not comes because it is´nt convenient for a lot of peolpe envolve in the crime.
Tiago, Porto, Portugal
Thank goodness the Portuguese police are able to recognise this for the mumbo jumbo it is. Let's try and remember what they have said when the truth does eventually come out and we will all be able to recognise them for the frauds they are. But of course, they will have a good reason why they are wrong.
Craig, kingsbridge, devon
Thank you James for not coming. By the way, Portugal as one of the lowest crime rates in Europe... but as we all know the police as nothing to do with that.
Joao M, Lisbon, Portugal
In exactly what part of your anatomy does Euro-Justice and the Madeleine investigation excite admiration?
Don't you think the Madeleine investigation exemplifies the finest justice in the whole wide world?
Tommy, Honaker, VA
No doubt the bungling Portuguese Police have a lot of incompetence to cover up. It is no wonder that they would not want a skilled team of private eyes snooping. Mark Portugal off my vacation destination list until they recruit a competent police force.
James Zeeb, Greenville, USA/Illinois
Whether or not we accept the concept of psychic investigations, it does seem somewhat "odd" that a Police Authority would take time out from their somewhat questionable investigative techniques to make an Issue over the involvement of non-police investigators participating in this sorry situation! Better if the Portuguese Police concentrated their efforts on the task that bemoan others. If indeed it is the law that only Police can investigate crime in Portugal, perhaps EU law and the Rights to operate within the (EU) Internal Market need to be enforced in Portugal?
