Thousands of Greeks fled towering walls of flame yesterday as strong winds fanned fires that have devastated the country and killed 63 people in four days.
Helicopters winched people out of blazing hamlets while the country’s worst fires in decades showed no sign of abating. Dozens raged unchecked. The Government yesterday announced a €200 million (£135 million) package to provide immediate disaster relief to affected areas.
A serious fire still blazed around the town of Krestena, which on Sunday barely escaped being burnt to the ground. About 3,000 people from nearby villages were gathered in Krestena awaiting evacuation. At Olympia, the grass on the banks of the excavated stadium was charred and the neighbouring Mount of Kronion was a blackened heap. A water-bomber helicopter managed to save the museum.
Officials admitted that an antifire system had been in place around the perimeter of Olympia since the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens but that it had failed out of sheer neglect.
Vyron Polydoras, the Public Order Minister, said that the Greek antiterrorism squad had been mobilised as he had “strong indications” that many, if not most, of the fires had been deliberately started. A 77-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly starting a fire inadvertently while lighting an outdoor stove. Seven people have been charged with arson so far.
Theories about who the alleged arsonists are ranged from terrorists to property developers. Some believe that developers are trying to clear land along a projected motorway in the Western Peloponnese to depress land prices and make a profit when the projected road is built and adjacent property prices go up. The line of the worst fires seems to follow the route.
Commentators said that the fire disaster ought to wake up leading political parties to the need for urgent environmental protection laws.

If, indeed, the elections still go ahead on the 16th September...
John, Thessaloniki,
It is no wonder that this disaster happened in Greece in 2007.
In a country that public administration is severely corrupted and appointments in critical posts are made based on links with politicians, in a counrty where there are numerous illegal waste areas where fires can easily start it is no wonder that this tremendous disaster has happened.
Our officials are now in Brussels and ask for extra help after they wasted in previous years all money that was intended for environmental protection. EU officials should not give any single Euro without applying the most strict controls. At the same time they should impose heavy fines for violations that have happened in environmental protection.
No matter on how fires started lack of organisation and incompetence of officials involved led to the biggest disaster in the Greek modern history.
Takis Papadakis, Athens, Greece
I am one the Greeks who have lost loved ones during this disaster. I wonder how our Inteligence Agency could have missed critical information on such an organised "terrorist" attack. Either they had some idea about it and did nothing or the are tottaly ignorant and therefore not capable for governing the Country. I have one more question; if the fire is an act of terrorism, why the people arrested or accused for it are a 77 yearold lady, an 11 year old boy and other unfortunate citizens?
MARIA PAPADOPOULOY, ZACHARO / ILIA, GREECE
The disaster caute in Greece these days is unbelievable. the unfortunate is that even now noone is taking the responsibility .
We are unable to organise and protect our own country and it is sad to say but it is also true. It is also rediculous to claim that political parties set these fires on , because i beleive that no Greek would never do domething like that to it's own country.
We have to find these people and be really harsh on them . We have to take finally serious and strong measures to prevent from happening this again. We need strong men in the politics , none of the present politics worth the respect of Greeks .I hope people we be alert and won't forget ever what happent.
Giota, Athens, Greece
terrorism has become the excuse of the incompetent. I feel sorry for my country
kostas zervas, corfu,
It's a bit late for environmental protection laws now. Imagine how much C02 these fires will have created!
Tom Whittwell, London, England
There have always been summer forrest fires in Greece. There has never been, however, such mass destruction and death. If it is true, as the Government is trying to claim, that there is an "organised threat" against Greece, surely for such a threat to be so successful, then the Government is totally non-existant and unable to protect the country and the citizens. Prevention is the obvious answer, but as always in Greece, there has to be something tragic happen before they realise that they should have spent money on prevention by building up the fire brigade, instead of breaking it down, as they have done. Politics is a dirty game and unfortunately we are always the innocent victims. Let's hope on 16th September the people will take the opportunity to express their anger and outrage by voting for change.
