Portugal’s police lack expertise in investigating child abduction cases and the theory that Madeleine McCann was taken by an abductor should not be ruled out, the nation’s most senior law officer said yesterday.
Fernando José Pinto Monteiro, the Attorney General, added that he could not guarantee that officers were acting within the bounds of the law.
In an interview with a Portuguese newspaper, Mr Monteiro said: “I think phone tapping in Portugal is done too much. I myself have many doubts that my phones are not being tapped.” Kate and Gerry McCann believe that their phone calls have been listened to, as questions put to them in police interviews appeared to be based on information gleaned from conversations with their friends.
Asked whether, as Portugal’s most senior legal officer, he could assure the public that police were not acting “freewheel”, Mr Monteiro admitted: “No, I can’t guarantee that.”
He said that because fewer children were abducted in Portugal than in England the nation’s police had less expertise in dealing with cases of children disappearing. “We don’t have great experience in this type of crime,” he said. “All I know is that no lead should be abandoned.”

Just an observation on Nicks missing American children, 86% are found and the majority are taken by family members after marital problems, this is not to say a significant number are unacounted for God bless them

There is only one place that blame should be assigned and that is with whoever abducted this child. Anything else merely makes excuses for a criminal act and diverts attention away from a kidnapper and a lost child.
As far as leaving a child unattended? Let the parent who has never turned his or her back for even just a moment... in a food market or in a parking lot or a park... let them throw the first stone so that we may all see what perfection looks like in mortal human flesh.
Michael, Phenix City, AL, US
Please stop blaming the police and start blaming the parents who left their children unnattended. It is highly unlikely that there would have been a crime if the children had been protected.

Today in our newspaper here in Sweden we could read that DNA was found at a mans house that was arrested in the beginning but releasted when there was no evidence...
How can there be DNA there now?
Howcome the didnt look after it before?
This is a sad/tragedic story, and I hope that the parents never ever leave there kids alone again..

Jacqui of Barcelona, that is a little bit far-fetched!! What an imagination!!
Cecilia, Porto, Portugal
All I know is that everyone is speculating about this and that, but a beautiful little girl is missing...
Why do people tend to strongly believe they know exactly what they are talking about?
I suppose one should respect the portuguese police investigations, instead of being so damn xenophobic about THE PORTUGUESE police...They surely know what they are doing...We all know that there are plenty of crimes that took place in Britain and remain unsolved...Come on, stop all that foolish gossiping!!!
Everyone could be a suspect, so let's sit down quietly and wait...

Perhaps if the police knew for sure when Madeleine was last seen, it could be that the "window of opportunity" makes abduction more or less possible.
diddy, germany,
Is anyone actually looking at the Portuguese police as possible suspects ?
Jacqui S, Barcelona, Spain
Has it crossed anyone's mind that maybe the portuguese police are taking all sort of precautions to avoid sending somebody to prison for a very long time and finding out afterwards he/she is perfectly innocent ?. Police in the UK have an appalling record of "solving" high profile cases that way...
a. cambra, birmingham,
If the criminals have a point system for the best places to commit crime; then Portugal must be near the top.
A Walton, Leicester, England
Unbeleivable. So much has been said and like the Prtugal Police (as good as they are) everyone who has commented has lost focus! The biggest victim in all of this is Madeline. She has been robbed of her freedom, her security, her family, her hapiness and her life!
Lets all pray for her safety and instead of everyone involved in the case talking to the media about this and that, lets see a concerted effort to communicate with the abductor(s). Somebody knows what has happened to this young girl and they need to come forward. Someone knows something that will help immensley in aiding this investigatio and they need to come forward.
Stop judging the actions of the vulnerable (the McCanns) and concentrate on finding this little girl - this is a responsibility incumbent on all members of society.
Personally i think our Gvt could be doing a lot more like offering the services of our Police and other special units in order to sift through the evidence and move forward.

He was being interviewed about the prohibition to publicize the results of telephone tapping imposed by the new Penal Process Code (issued in September). He admitted that telephone tapping was too much used but he also said that there was no illegal tapping. It is always done under the supervision of a judge. The problem is that sometimes there are leaks to the press and the contents of those telephone communications become public, even when the people involved are Ministers or highly positioned people, understandably they donât like it.
When asked about the Mac Cann case the General Attorney responded that all fronts where under scrutiny, he never did say that the abduction thesis was on again. In fact it was never discarded. The criminal investigation has to follow every possible hypothesis â that theory of the innocent until proven guilty doesnât apply here, itâs exactly the opposite: everyone is suspect and the smallest evidence must be considered as a potential clue.
L.M, Lisboa,
One cannot say that paedophilia is more predominant in some countries than others. I would surmise that some countries do less about investigating it or sweep it under the carpet. I see reports that some poor families across the world actually sell their children - so much for respecting the family. Paedophilia is a sneaking epidemic.
E J Murray, Kerry, Ireland
Iâve read so many stupid things here, like if the police did check who used the rented car, or if the police did question the people, or if the police examined the neighbourhood, etc etcâ¦
Come on, do you think the Portuguese police are dumb?!!! Just to quiet some souls (fortunately those are mostly the journalists), to be a member of the PJ you have to be highly qualified intellectually, academically and they are submitted to a very strenuous and continuous training.
Do us some justice.
L.M, Lisboa,
So much time has been lost and maybe they will never find Maddie but the police are not giving up on the search and are still questioning everyone.
I hope one of the questions asked of everyone at the hotel is:
" Did you see anyone taking an unusual interest in Madeleine such as watching her or even talking to her?" The abductor would have been around and staring at her and her family alot.
The fact that she was abducted out of her bed indicates pre-meditation --- this was not a random snatching while she was outside playing.

just watched a tv prgramme about Elizabeth Smart who was found after 9 months - dont give up hope
PS she was taken from her bed from her own house can happen anywhere

Paedophilia, in the UK sense of the term, is indeed a lot more common in the UK than in Southern Europe.
It is not just that they are different than us, it is because the concept of family really still exists over there - unlike over here.
Alfred, Ryde, Isle of Wight
Alfonso there is no more paedophilia in Britain than anywhere else. Just we acknowledge it and try to stop it rather than sweep it under the carpet like some cultures. Perhaps Portugal??
Your comment reminds me of Iran presidents recent commets that there are no homesexuals in his country.
Backward way of thinking!
Keith, London,
Madeleine was obviously not kidnapped in the conventional sense, and in view of the apparent incompetence of the Portuguese police, they can't really say that paedophilia is more prevalent here than in Portugal. Would you report such a thing to them on the basis of their performance in this case? Paedophilia is very rare, has not increased (only our awareness has) and is not connected to anything like family breakdown. Nor does it vary from society to society, although levels of reporting do.
The Portuguese police seem to have overlooked basic things like sealing the site, making police officers wear protective clothing and put out cigarettes, checking rubbish bins (these are huge, communal and emptied every night) - no attempt was made to check them all or to prevent their being emptied that night after Madeleine disappeared, nor to search the disposal site where the contents were taken.
As a result we will probably never know what happened that night.
alexandria, Sheffield,
I agree,Barbara, It is sad to think that this child, in such a dangerous situation, has not had the very best in help......is this why in so many places ( number of children gone missing is phenominal) children cannot be found.... ?
We are still living in the dark ages..... Madeleine I hope the light goes on for you, maybe you will be the start for others who are the vulnerable of the world.
Heaven help us and keep us from the work of predators..
doreen , on, canada
As for the previous statement that "Paedophilia and kidnap is far more prevalent in Britain because of the breakdown of the family."
really! that why most of it is committed statistically by married men perhaps it more reflects the society we live in where you can get more for some types of robbery than you can for rape . We need to re access our values as a society. I supposed religious society such as America has more than 1 million missing kids
Nick, Crawley,

At last. May be now they will get back to looking for who did take Madeline.
