Turkish helicopter gunships and F16 fighter jets reportedly bombed Kurdish targets inside Iraq today, as Nato defence ministers discussed the cross-border crisis at a summit the Netherlands.
Ankara's troop build-up along the Iraqi border continued with unnamed military sources confirming to Reuters and local news agencies that a series of air strikes had been launched since Sunday.
Kurdish forces were also massing along the border this evening aiming to repel any potential invasion.
The developments came after Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Prime Minister, gave warning that he could authorise an invasion "at any time", if Iraqi promises to clamp down on Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) rebels came to nothing.
In a response to growing pressure by Turkey, the US and Britain, the Iraqi President yesterday ordered the closure of PKK offices throughout his country.
The current crisis was dramatically heightened with a PKK rebel ambush near the border killed 12 soldiers over the weekend.
Eight Turkish troops have been missing since the attack and Roj TV, a pro-Kurdish television station, aired footage seeming to show the men being held hostage in front of a PKK flag.
A senior Kurdish commander said troops were being mobilised in northern Iraq claiming that the 12,000-strong Kurdish Peshmerga military force was ready for action if the need arose, though he strongly urged a peaceful solution to the crisis.
"Some of them are here in new positions and strategic locations," General Amin Gavarki told The Times, while stressing that the move was purely preparatory in case Turkey decided to launch a major incursion into Iraqi territory.
"We will protect ourselves, we will defend ourselves. As our President [Barzani] says we do not attack anyone and we do not let anyone attack us. We are ready and we will fight until the last breath," he said.
Turkish fighter jets bombed and destroyed several PKK mountain positions in Sirnak, Hakkari, Siirt and Van provinces bordering Iraq and Iran, Anatolia, the semi-official Turkish news agency reported.
Sources said 34 rebels of the outlawed PKK had been killed in the sorties. All Turkish troops involved in the operations returned safely to Turkey.

Ruben, I am a Turkish citizen and belong to another minority group. I can assure you and anyone else that Turkey does not treat any ethnic group differently. If some of the Kurds have some difficulties in their lives, so does other Turks too. There are so many different ethnic groups live in Turkey. This has always been like that. I think some of the Kurds are misatkenly taking those difficulties personal. Turkey is still a developing country, has a lot of issues to work on to improve the quility of life. But we have to do it all together. In America everybody is coming from another country and live in peace. Why can't we live in peace too. There is no way Turkey will give a bit of land to anybody. If you want to live in peace, lets advance our country all together. If you don't want to leave in peace, just get the fuck out of the country. There is Kurdistand now, you can just move there if you are not happy. But I prefer you stay in peace, not support PKK, support your country Turkey

Can you imagine? This is a "terrorist organization" with offices, TV (Roj Tv) and connections with foreign media!
This is PKK! For years Turkey has been shouting out to the world about its pain due to the terror caused by PKK and no one responded. It took us to "display" our armed forces and suddenly the world started taking us seriously. Did the world need another war, really? They are killing our soldiers..
Please remember Israel bombed Lebanon for kidnapping two soldiers. Look what PKK has been doing to us.
Attacking and killing our soldiers mean attacking the Turkish nation, the Turkish State. We are a NATO member, where is NATO?
Lies, nothing but lies..Solidarity, goodwill where are you?
Can you hear the screams of families of the kidnapped soldiers?
CEREN, ISTANBUL, TURKEY
if one believes in fascism , terrorism and war , one definitely should support pkk . kurdish , turkish , armenian .. or whatever , everybody has same rights in this country and all are citizens.
altug, istanbul, turkey
Any country who is threathen by terrorist has the right to defend aginst,
under the international law.
Turkey has the ultimita right since it is right by their border,
US came 10.000 km, to do it,Israel do it,French do it,
why not Turkey,40.000 been killed is not that enough reason,
international comunity must support this and help Turkey to clean it's borders othervise it will come to theirs.
Thank you

How many more mother's will have to cry, how many more children have to be left without a father, how many more wives will be widowed before a radical action is taken? I saw footages of a Turkish soldier that got killed in Hakkari, who was originally from Adiyaman - East Turkey. His mum was singing mournful songs after her "baby" in Kurdish. He is one of the many Kurdish minority within the Turkish army. Why? Why kill your own kind...Why kill anybody. Turks, Kurds, Armenians, Caucasians, Greeks, Jewish...we have all lived peacefully for centuries...What's happened now? Have we lost our touch with our humane feelings. Let the historians deal with history and get on with our lives. I'm Turkish, my husband's Kurdish. Our families have respect for each others cultures and our children are brought up to respect all humans regardless of their ethnicity. What would Mustafa Kemal Ataturk have thought if he was to see the country he helped save from the monarchy of Ottoman Emp being torn apart?

Kurds want their own country within Turkey that will never happen, the PKK is a terrorist organisation and as such has no rights and definetly no legitimate reason for what they are doing. The Turkish flag is red for a reason for all the matrys that have given their lives for our great country and we will all give our last drop of blood to defend it.If the PKK continue they will all be exterminated.
Turkey has a right to defend itself as do all nations.
Ediz, London, United Kingdom
The one who claim to be a Kurd, claiming Kurds enjoy every
right in Turkey, must be jocking. Let alone the Kurds in Northern Kurdistan, even in the case of Southern Kurdistan,
the biased Turkish press and hateful Turkish establishment refrains from accepting the consepts: Kurds and Kurdistan.
Surley Kurds continue their struggle until their identity is
formaly recognized.
"terrorism" is a bad tasted coinage to cover the state terror
against Kurdish people in Turkey, since the inseption of the new republic.
USA, Britaian, EU and Kurdish authority in Kurdistan Region
in Iraq must impose a peaceful resolution on war monger state of Turkey.
Hemin, Stockholm, Sweden
Firstly, Ruben, I would concentrate on getting your own house in order first. Secondly, 6,000 or so members of the PKK to not represent the ambitions of 25 million or so Kurds in Turkey, so enough of this alleged ill treatment of minorities. Turks of Kurdish origin in Turkey openly hold senior positions in the Turkish government. In addition, many Kurds run some of Turkeys biggest businesses. "Turkey for Turks" is an ideological umbrella for anyone who is willing to respect the laws of Turkey - all nationalities welcome!
Ahme Hussein, London, England
we as Kurds in Turkey have all rights as Turish citizens .
Tose rebels dont know what they are doing . I am so sorry
what happing in these days .
Misbah Ergen, Antalya Turkey,
Ruben, who are you to accuse anybody of racism? Look where you live?
Kurt, London, England
Kurdish people will get what they deserve(!). Turkey has lots of etnic origin but non of them want a country. We will not let anybody get non of our earth. Did not the USA attack Iraq after 11 september? Then why shall we stop while we're under terrorism. Turkey has peace inside except some of the kurdish people at the east side of turkey. They are being flattered by the USA , that's for sure.. I got lots of kurdish friend cursing PKK..! We're ready for everything to defend our country. I trustfully may leave university if we are needed. All my friends may , too. Do not forget it..!
Alpaslan BEK, izmir, TURKEY
yes the usa it about time they kept out of others affairs
mario pellicci, dunoon argyll, scotland
Give the Kurds the rights they deserve and stop the faschist treatment of the minorities, perhaps then Turkey will have peace within and with its neighboors. Otherwise PKK has the legitimacy for fighting for basic rights for its people. Enough with "Turkey is for turks" ideology, its racist.
