Many sightings of Madeleine McCann have been reported in Morocco by holidaymakers after an appeal by private investigators searching for the missing girl and the release of a description of her alleged abductor.
The investigators are reported to be particularly interested in three calls that gave details of a girl matching Madeleine’s description with a middle-class Moroccan woman aged about 60.
Gerry McCann has said for the first time that he is convinced that a friend saw the abductor taking his daughter from their holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3. A sketch of a man allegedly seen walking away from the Ocean Club resort was released by the private investigators last week. Mr McCann wrote on his internet blog at the weekend: “We believe this child was Madeleine . . . Someone else may be aware of a man matching this description who has behaved suspiciously at any time since the beginning of May.”
The friend who claims to have seen the abductor has said that she is still haunted by the image of him striding away from the ground-floor apartment where the McCanns were staying, carrying a girl. Jane Tanner, 36, from Exeter, has insisted that she told Portuguese police immediately of the sighting. Carlos Anjos, president of the Judicial Police Inspector’s Union, dismissed the picture as a “cartoon”.
Mr McCann said the family had hired Metoda 3, an agency in Barcelona, to help in the search for his daughter. A source close to the investigators said they had received 275 calls with information on the anonymous help-line - 0034-902 300213 - in the first three days after it was set up. Many of the calls related to Morocco.
Senior police sources in Morocco have said that many young girls in the north of the country, closest to Europe, have blonde hair and features similar to those of Madeleine. They have insisted that it would be unlikely that a strange girl speaking a foreign language would be seen in public without the police being tipped off.
Meanwhile, Mr McCann and his wife Kate, both 39, have been told that they will have to wait nearly a year to discover why they had been made official suspects in the case. The couple, from Rothley, Leicestershire, had hoped to be given the details of the police case against them on November 14, when new Portuguese laws mean that Robert Murat, who had also been a suspect in the case, can ask for the evidence against him.
But it was reported yesterday that police have applied to the investigating judge to have the deadline extended because they are waiting for evidence, including test results by the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham. Judge Pedro Daniel dos Anjos Frias has been asked to give the case “special complexity” status, which means that the suspects will not learn what they are accused of until May.

Why have no solid leads come up? Are these people who did this really that good? I wish they would find her, I pray for her every day, that she will be found. If there is a God please, please bring her home dead or alive, but preferably alive.
jobear, Lethridge, Canada
I think the drawing is specific enough as it is unlikely that two men wearing that particular combination of clothing and hairstyle were at the resort that night. I think the McCanns should have their detectives locate every male who matched the description, in the entire local area, for about 30 miles around. Someone is sure to know someone who resembles that look. Then they can narrow that group to those who would take a child - possibly only one or two suspects. If the kidnapper was a local, I would think he could be found. They should post the drawing in advertisements offering a large reward for information leading to a conviction, and wait for tips.
I hope she is found.
Emma H., Ottawa,
Why can't these callers stick with her until police arrive? Provide a license number? An address?
Emma H., Ottawa,
Francisco, What you said about the Prophet Muhammad is a fabrication made up in your own mind. Your comments are very disturbing showing total lack of any knowledge of the Muslim Religion. Get your facts straight before making anymore idiotic comments.
Vicki, America

This guy from Spain called Francisco, must be either from another planet or seriuosly disturbed in his mind. Grow up will you? The days of Franco are long gone. Or are you just worried that some Moroccans are better looking then you little spanish banzo? remember the Maures don't suprised if you have a moroccan blood.. if you wish.
BOUCHAIB. BEROUCHE, London, United Kingdom
Are we to believe that the witness providing this description decided that it was strategically right to wait until October before providing it? This image, if genuine, should surely have been circulated months ago.
Giles, Battle,
Any Western visitor to Morocco knows it is usual for Moroccans to aproach Westerners with offers to buy their wives or daughters. Ok, you may say it is the muslim tradition, and that Muhammad condoned this practice, he himself having married little girls of very short age. Still it is very disturbing.
Francisco, Madrid, Spain
The way people criticise the Mc Cann's is crazy to me. I can't understand that. Nobody knows if they are guilty, and trying everything possible to find Madeleine is quite normal.
nicole, obernai, france
Linda in Glasgow is right... this is not a description, it is a cartoon... an artist's impression that is not corroborated with height, weight etc. Let's all pray this travesty comes to as clean an end as is possible and as quickly as possible.
nesersert, Kent, Kent
It will be close to impossible for a young european girl to be kidnapped in Morocco without the knowldge of the local authorities.Moroccan security system is build on information.,The shoe shiner, the taxi driver, the parking attendants and almost everybody that is on the street will inform the police if anything is wrong.Maddie never set foot and is not in Morocco.the investigation team is slow and not very effective.
i live in Morocco and can say without hesitation.the little girl is not in this country.
A.essadiq, Rabat, Morocco
Perhaps the picture is grasping at straws, but the parents are desperate...
The McCanns have used their position and influence in the investigation concerning their missing daughter, but they have also been catalysts for changes in the way these cases are investigated, which will benefit the parents of other children who are abducted.
I wish them the best and pray for the recovery of their beautiful daughter.
Connie, USA,
Well I for one will still go to Portugal and so will thousands of others. If we let things like this put us off (and much much worse) most of the world would be out of bounds!
As for these 'sightings', look at how many false alarms there have been so far. It would be wonderful to find her but not holding my breath.
Chrissy, Halifax, England
Why not put Jane Tanner under hypnothis, perhaps she will recall more details concerning the person she saw.
Barbara, Toronto, Canada
In the unlikely event that anyone from The Times reads these comments... please give us a real story telling us:
1. Why did the British government send these parents a spin doctor straight away? Is there any precedent for this?
2. Why do so many parts of the British press report the McCann's spin so unquestioningly?
3. Why is this child treated so differently from every other missing child by the British media?
4. Why is a cartoon of a faceless man considered to be a story by large sections of the British press.
The answers to these questions are the real story.
joe, brussels, belgium
When I read the comments which are so condemning of Mr and Mrs McCann, I feel ashamed to be a member of the human race.....deal with your own issues please and stop projecting...Jil

How many children are abducted and do not get one shred of publicity. How many children do not even get more than a small blurb in the middle of a newspaper. I fell terrible that she was taken and i feel soo sorry for her parents, for her, but thousands of children are missing a year and unfortunately this case takes up the media attention that could be focued on other children .... even here in the U.S. where they may be able to feature other children... we already know about Madeline what about all the others who remain out there and no one is actively "looking" as hard for them.... what a shame.......
Kris, Mineral, Virginia
I don't understand that the forensic tests can take that long. It seems almost as if there were people interfering to delay the results.

I do not know if the parents are involved or not, but the recent picture of the supposed abductor is most strange. Originally, we had a man carrying a bundle that may have been a child. NOW, six months after the event we have a detailed, clothed description of a man carrying a girl, with legs dangling free in Maddies exact pyjamas! I hope she is found alive soon, but my gut feeling tells me......someone in the Tapas 9, knows something...whatever that may be.
S. Lutz, Würzburg,
With all the publicity surrounding this case, isn't it strange that only now people are coming forward? This is just grasping at straws. And just as a matter of interest, how can the McCanns afford NOT to go to work, who is paying their household bills? If they are both at home full time, why push their little ones back in day-care? I would have thought that losing one tot would make it unthinkable for them to be parted from their children. Let us hope that at the conclusion (and hopefully there WILL be one), that millions of people don't end up with red faces. This case, as in the children's book, is getting "curiouser and curiouser."
Sally, Vancouver, Canada
Whoever thinks that a kidnapper will parade a stolen child in broad daylight is either stupid or cunning.
Other than that, the "sketch" looks like another 20 million men.
Is this what they need the money for?
No kidding?
Instead of trying to spin everybody's head off, why don't they answer the police questions!!!
On the other hand, if they think the police are so stupid, what do they need the hot shot lawyers for?
Please... Enough is Enough!!!
Mariana Faithful, Athens,
Many years ago in Morocco I was approached on two occasions by men wanting to buy my blond haired, blue eyed, daughter. It certainly made me feel uncomfortable. If you haven't been there - don't comment.
Kay Rainsley, Coventry, England
I think the McCanns are doing their absolute best to find Madeleine and the public has gotten out of control with their comments. Despite the fact that there ARE blondes in Morrocco, they are still RARE, and it's no wonder that as soon as something that looks like Madeleine comes along they jump to find out more. You would too if that was your missing child! And certainly, if you had murdered or kidnapped your own child, you would not drag out this publicity stunt for six months.
No, I think this is another savage obsession of the publics' to butt into people's personal lives and find the worst in them.
Ashley, Brussels, Belgium
Having lived in Spain foe 20 years, I would say that "Metodo 3" are probably the best in the business.
Just a comment, the "anonymous" number published is the equivalent of a UK 0870 number. If you contract a 902 xxx xxx number (and I haved done so in the past), one of the billing options is to get a detailled by-number list of all calls to your number.
If Metodo 3 are as bright as their reputation, they will be very quick to follow up the origin of those calls!
David Croft, Harlow, Essex
To Nancy from Glasgow.
I was in Egypt with my blond-hair and blue-eyes children and nobody came asking to buy them. What a nonsense! Egyptians have a lot of children. Do you really think they want any more children? This is just ignorance.
And for Andrew Milner from Yokohama. I didnt know Praia da Luz but now I think it is a nice place for my next holidays.
Yolanda, Madrid,
As well as the Vandals contributing to the fair complexion of some Moroccans, there must also be many descendants European slaves in Morocco.
Moroccan slave traders raised the coasts of Europe from Spain to Iceland taking slaves back to the slave markets of Morocco, Tunisia and Libya, by some estimates numbering as many as a million, including the entire population of one Irish town, Baltimore.
Jack, Southampton,
Private investigators would urge local Moroccans for clues to reach their prey, but i dont think that the local inhabitant could easily differentiate between various species of kids.I think that reports are exaggerated a bit and a thorough investitation should be carried away from cameras and media to reach to the abducted child; however, things should be taken seriously and noticeable without giving a damn chance to unpredictable moves.
This story takes us back to old ages when tools were so limited and confined ; yet the professional sense solved more complicated issues.Do We Really Running Short Of Such professionalism!! if so God HELP MADIE!!
Tayseer Abu Qurs, Kuwait, Kuwait
This drawing is a joke! Half of South Europe's male population would fit into it. I believe it is just one more trick of the McCanns and their friends to obstruct justice.
Ana , stockholm, sweden
So they are going to threaten Moroccans who have blond features? People must know that Morocco is a country of contrast, a mix of ethnicity's which makes Moroccans "Moroccans". Africans, Berbers, Arabs, Phoenicians, Vandals...
Yes, even Vandals. Some Moroccan looks exactly like a northern European that you'll mistake him for an English or German.
So please Europe, just because you see a blond child doesn't mean that it's Madeleine. Just don't go knocking every families who has a blond child.
Madghis, Ottawa, Canada
Unless someone who claims to have seen Maddie can give concrete evidence, its going to be just another wild goose chase again in Morocco!
Furthermore it no longer matters whether the Portuguese police no longer consider the McCanns suspects, in the eyes of the public whether they are guilty or not, they will always be suspects until it is proven eitherwise!!!!
Vena, South Africa, KZN
I thought that at the time of Madeleine's disappearance the man in the alleyway was carrying a bundle that could have been a child. Now it seems that it was clearly a child possibly wearing the same pyjamas as Madeleine. So much confusion - bottom line, what happened to a beautiful little girl who should have been protected and safe in her own bed?
G.Williams, Colwyn Bay, United Kingdom
The moroccans as with all arabs are not particularly partial to pedophilia .In fact, in their majority they have great respect and love for their children and the odd child molester would be soon dealt with. If a moroccan couple were to resort to such a crime they would surely opt for a child from their part of the World.
It is entirely wrong to move the investigation sideways like this.
Michael Armstrong, London, England
I think before anyone expresses an opinion it would be wise to put themselves in the shoes of the McCann family. What would I have done if it was my child? People can very easily lift their opinion on matters when they are not directly involved. It would indeed be a great day if their daughter can be found.
Elizabeth, Norfolk
Elizabeth , Norfolk,
Wonder how many Moroccan children are going to have their lives disrupted because the average Brit 'on holiday' is incapable of understanding that many Arab children in Morocco have blond hair and 'European' features?
gulfbridge, Dubai,
This is what i don't understand. If i thought that i had seen maddie i would walk up to the person and just have a look at her eye. i mean......... really, how difficult could that be. Now people surmise that they have seen her and then just let whoever it is just walk on by with her and disappear. We are surrounded by cell phones etc, and yet people cannot keep sight of this so called maddie until the cops arrive. This just does not make sense to me.
JOY MULLER, CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
yeah well Andrew, no doubt the portuguese will be very glad to see the back of this media circus and indeed all the english tourists who invade their country during the summer months. Back to Madaleine, I do hope they find a new lead, it is terrible to think that parents could be involved.
Sophie, London,
Why on earth would a potential abductor have Madeleine stretched out in his arms??!
Most of us know when lifting our own sleeping children that the chance of them waking is going to be pretty high, especially if you are outside and being carried by a stranger.
This image does not make logical sense surely? Ok the child may have been drugged by the abductor but still why walk with the child stretched out for all to see?? Surely you would carry them with face on your shoulder to hide their face and also to stop them making a fuss if they awoke, why not cover her pyjamas to be less obvious??
I can't believe this scenario and am sorry because I would really like to think that the PJ and press have got it wrong.
Melissa, Derbyshire, UK
Not interested in this news only because thousands of children go missing all over the world.
Who cares for them?
Joe, Melbourne,
Let's see... European holiday. How about Portugal? Are you out of your mind?
Portugal; say good-bye to your international tourist trade for the foreseeable future. If that's not a solid reason for a major police procedure overhaul I don't know what is.
Andrew Milner, Yokohama , Japan
Good grief. Can't these people call police and stick nearby , keeping the little girl in sight, until police arrive?
Emma H., Ottawa,
Bring Maddie home. The parents are not to blame, ok they made a mistake and now they are paying for it. Now the most important thing is to reunite maddie with her mummy and daddy and brother and sister. good luck and i hope she is found soon
claudine, Gloucester, UK
Given the European links in lineage in Morocco there are hundreds of thousands of blonde girls age around 3 or 4 there.
The relentless press does nothing to help find this missing child. If anything it hinders everything .
And public keep hyping off opinions as if they are facts when they are not.
M McGregor, Tunbridge Wells, UK
A year before thenMc Cann learn what they accused of ? Is it a joke ? I can't believe that. This system is not human !
nicole, obernai, france
Seems like anything to take the spot light off. When I saw the drawing I thought it could be Tom Cruise or for that matter anyone else in that type of description. The PJ will find Madeleine and what happened to her.
LS Wagner, Nuremberg, Germany
I think that this whole thing is absolutely disgusting. The way this family has been treated is awful. There are lots of families who think they are in a safe haven when they are on holiday and would never dream anything like this would happen to them. You only have to look at the young girl that someone tried to abduct from her own bath-tub. How insensative can people be to criticise this couple who obviously adore their children. My heart goes out to them. I also believe that Maddy is out there somewhere. I remember quite a few years ago a member of my sister-in-laws family were in Egypt and were approached by a few of the locals asking them to sell their children because of the colour of their hair. This is not just a new thing that is going on. These children as far as i am concerned are stolen to order. Good luck to the McCanns and I hopr they fined that liitle beauty soon. I truly believe they will.
Nancy, glasgow, scotland
Morroco ...again!
That was NOT a description of an abductor....this was a cartoon!!!
