WARSAW The new Defence Minister of Poland said that the country should take another look at whether allowing the United States to base part of a missile defence system in the country would serve its interests.
The remarks by Bogdan Klich, which were published in a newspaper interview, underlined the shift in thinking on the issue under Poland’s new government, which took power on Friday. Donald Tusk, the new Prime Minister, and his pro-business government, have vowed to take a firmer stand in its relations with the US. Under Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the former Prime Minister, Warsaw began negotiations with Washington on its request to place ten interceptor missiles in the country, frequently expressing strong support for the plan as a way to strengthen the transatlantic alliance.
But in an interview with Dziennik Mr Klich said that Poland must reconsider the costs and benefits of the proposal. Russian officials have given warning that the plan could lead to a new arms race. (AP)

To all the idiots claiming Russian occupation until the fall of the Wall - learn how to read - UNION of SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLICS. Do you see "Russia" anywhere in those words? So quit insinuating that you were oppressed by them. The USSR comprised of 15 republics and who was running that union from 1921 to1953 - a Georgian named Joseph Jugashvilli (Stalin), and each republic had its reps in the Politburo. So get it through your thick sculls - you were under SOVIET influence. And that's why Putin and Russians are so tired of all the former soviets blaming the NEW Russia for all their woes; accusing it of trying invade or posing a threat to their independence.

it was not America that occupied Poland for allmost fifty years it was Russia and it was not americans who murderd thousends of polish offisers and its intelligens it was russians. It`s not israely people blowing themself in london and madrit ,it is not Israel firing rockets at iran.Writting that israel is a threat to europe it`s ridiculous. I am don`t support the war in Iraq but i bielive in democrasy and freedom of speech and both Russia and Iran don`t have them!!!

Putin is responding to the arms race that never ceased by the USA and NATO. NATO was create to stop communism and is still continuosly expanding the outdated alliance closer and closer to Russia's borders. Yes, Russia is a serious threat when attacked and has no more intensions of invading anybody than does Poland itself, Czech Republic, San Marino, Iceland, Seychelles, or Papua New Guinea.
It's quite magnanomous of US stating it stands for world peace. It does so only when it benefits the United States government strategically - it does not care about the local population. Heck they don't even care about their own.

I've had a look on Google Earth, and the only way a missile going from Iran to the USA would pass over Poland (assuming it travels in a straight line, taking the shortest possible route according to Google Earth's algorithms) is if the missile was fired from the west side of Iran and aimed at the east coast of the USA. Again assuming that any missiles fired from Iran to the USA are going in the shortest straight line possible, I would say that anti missile defences would be more useful in Canada, or even the USA itself, although then any missiles aimed at targets in the north wouldn't be intercepted. Even better than Canada, on the other hand, would be Russia, which is directly between Iran and the USA. Although American missile defences in Russia itself may not go down too well...
Leech, England,
Even if it is targeted towards Russia, so what? You must be living on another world if you do not believe that Russia is still a threat. They are bitter about the break of the Soviet Union and the power they once held. They do not shy from using their oil reserves to regain that power. It is in Poland's interest to have this shield. It is defensive in nature and the only thing Russia should fear is that they will not be able to nuke Poland. Where is the problem? Polish American from Chicago

This is a No-Brainer. Putin is going to start an arms race regarless of the missile shield or not.

Poland is right this time, the new American missiles are actually aimed against Russia and not Iran, Iran is juts an excuse for the Americans to put the missiles in Poland.
There is no threat now, tomorrow, or ever, from Iran, but there is a real and imminent threat, and that threat comes from Israel which has atomic weapons and they are ready to strike any country in Europe.
Yes, Israel is a threat to the world peace. If the U.S wants to protect Europe and Russia too from nuclear attacks, the U.S must put their anti-missile shield in Albania, or in Kosova , facing Israel where the real threat to the security of Europe comes. from.
.
Iran has no quarrels with Russia or with Europe, it has only with Israel because Israel is armed with atomic weapons which are aimed against Iran and the Iranian people,.
