Amid the razzmatazz of an Americanstyle election rally yesterday, President Putin accused the West of plotting a campaign of dirty tricks to destabilise Russia.
He told thousands of flag-waving supporters that opponents of United Russia, his party, were in the pay of foreign governments determined to weaken and divide the country at parliamentary elections on December 2.
The President, apparently fearful of the “colour” revolutions that swept away the regimes in Georgia and Ukraine after rigged elections, said that Russia faced a conspiracy to trigger similar mass demonstrations.
“Regrettably, there are those inside the country who count on support of foreign funds and governments and not their own people,” he said. “They have learnt from Western experts and have received some training in neighbouring republics. And now they are going to stage provocations here.”
He dismissed the opposition as “jackals” who “slink through foreign embassies” for assistance. He claimed that other parties were filled with people who had brought Russia to ruin in the “oligarchic” 1990s.
Opinion polls predict that United Russia will get two thirds of the vote and only the Communist Party among opponents is certain to gain the 7 per cent support needed to win seats.
United Russia has turned the election into a referendum on Mr Putin’s popularity, however, amid continued speculation that the Kremlin is searching for ways to allow him a third term as President. Mr Putin has insisted that he will respect the Constitution, which limits a president to two consecutive terms.
Sergei Mironov, who as Speaker of the Senate is the third-most senior politician in Russia, said yesterday that Mr Putin could sidestep the constitutional ban by resigning before his second term expires. A caretaker president would serve until presidential elections in March, when Mr Putin would be free to stand again.
Mr Putin is genuinely popular with many Russians for achieving stability and presiding over eight years of economic growth. Opposition parties complain that the Putin juggernaut is aided by blanket coverage on state-controlled television that makes it impossible for them to win support.
Grigori Yavlinsky, leader of the liberal Yabloko party, which is not expected to win seats, said that the elections would lead to “a semi-dictatorial state that aspires to become a system in which Putin becomes president for life”.
An opposition parliamentary candidate was shot and seriously wounded yesterday as he entered his house in the southern region of Dagestan. Farid Babayev heads the Yabloko party’s regional list.

The latest public polls conducted by the Yury Levada Analytical Center show that Vladimir Putinâs personal approval rating is shared by 80% of the population and his rating fell slightly below 70% only once throughout his entire term in office. His supporters are convinced that the President has successfully and with due dignity handled all of the thorny issues faced by the country, which has won him their trust. This viewpoint is shared by 31% of the respondents, while 30% of those polled believe that his "vote of overriding confidence" is underpinned by expectations about the successful settlement of problems and, last but not least, 35% claim that Russians trust Putin since they simply see no other viable option. The figures speak for themselves.

I suppose Russia is on the right way. And we, the population of this country see and feel it. I live in Chekhov, Moscow Region and I don't think that here in Moscow or St. Pet. we have fat idiots. We all work and try to make our life happier. I remember the horrors our coutry faced in the end of 80s-90s.
I remember all those terror attacks and instability. Now our country has found its own way of development with the help of our President. I'm proud of V.V. Putin!
And concerning other rigions I can say that if people don't work to work nobody make them do it!!! Everything is in our own hands!
Julia, Chekhov, Russia
JB, I have no doubt that you know your country well. But have you forgotten about 8 years of stunning economic growth that has changed the lives for millions of ordinary Russians, including older people who get increased pensions and pensions given in time? In terms of the opposition, there's that wonderful Mr Kasyanov who suggested that oil prices should be at a reasonable $25 per barrell because obviously he's in love with the so called liberal ideals and wishes everyone but Russia to benefit from its natural resources! What President Putin has done for Russia so far and his plans for the future betterment of the country are obviously dreaded by Russia's enemies who crave for cheap oil and would like to divide and conquor the population. So for looking at it from the point of millions of Russians, they would benefit hugely to have such a president like Mr Putin who would lead the country like he has so far.
MF, Surrey,
The only real qualification needed for any Russian leader is the ability to rattle your sabre and puff out your chest every now and then in order to make Russia look more important than they actually are.
The cold war is over, the Russians lost. End of Story. Get back in line and carry on doing as you are told and we will keep buying your oil and gas to line the pockets of your elite.
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
I'm going to stand in the next Russian election.
My policy is simple.
Bicycles and dancing.
We should dance, dance, dance!
When we have danced, rested and prepared, we may, as a democratic right, choose to ride bicycles to another place in which to dance.
Thankyou.

Putin's Putinism is not pure gold. But to change that system, including Putin, against the crazy systems in the USA under Bush and his criminal Think-tanks, would bring Russia down to hell. Neo-liberalists under spell of Chicago Boys brought Russia to the edge of bankruptcy, all wealth being stolen by Oligarchs. Putin may correct this self-destructing error.
Watching Russian elections from this side, Putin is still better than the US governed opponents of former times... What the hell was so good in Ukraine in Orange?
Delavy, Berlin, Germany
Oleg, you probably don't know what is going on in Russia. Putin haven't brought anything good to this country. Don't say about prosperity looking at the part of the population - some fat idiots living in Moscow and St. Pete but go beyond Moscow Circle Road and look at starving older population or young people who can't find a decent job in the regions of Russia - e.g. Siberia. When I studied and lived in the UK I thought a bit the same way as you do but after return I understand that the country is on the wrong way. Putin and his friends just do a show and we are all spectators in this disgusting theater unfortunately.
JB, Siberia,
Three words: Putin is right. Russia doesn't want to have another "colour revolution" sponsored by the West, the same way no Western country wants a "colour revolution" sponsored by Russia. Thinking otherwise leads to double standards. Please look at Georgia, it's on the brink of dictatorship with police beating up demonstrators and shutting down opposition TV stations. Look at Ukraine, the country is in chaos, its president is busy re-writing history, but totally ignoring the present problems with potential muslim uprising in Crimea and another economy crisis around the corner.
As well Russia needs to get rid of the possibility of the repeat of Yeltsin years. People don't want thier savings wiped out again and they don't want to be on the verge of starvation. They want prosperity and Puting has delivered it. I hope that one day US population will be taken through the same ordeal, may be than USA will learn to work with Russia and not against it.
Oleg, Toronto, Canada
No. He's turned out as some of us expected.
Frank Williams, Prague,
