She has dated Sir Mick Jagger and partied with Eric Clapton. She has been wooed by Kevin Costner and dazzled Donald Trump. Now Carla Bruni, the sultry singer and model, has a new boyfriend – the French President.
The couple chose the unlikely setting of a Mickey Mouse parade at Disneyland Paris to make public their romance, two months after Nicolas Sarkozy was left by his wife, Cécilia.
There was no official word from the presidency, but the nod was given to gushing media reports of the President’s new “fairytale romance”. Their visit to Disneyland with friends was described as a private outing, but a gaggle of photographers were conveniently on hand to record it.
Mr Sarkozy appeared in public without his wedding ring for the first time yesterday. He was thought likely to take Ms Bruni, who is 4in taller than him, on an official trip to Rome on Thursday. Some, however, wondered whether Mr Sarkozy, 52, might have met his match with Ms Bruni, 39, a successful singer-composer. She was described by Libération and Le Parisien newspapers as a famous “man-eater”.
While “Super-Sarko” basked in glory for bagging a desirable celebrity, the opposition Socialists accused the President of orchestrating a soap opera to regild his image. “This looks like one more episode in the ‘Adventures of Principality of the Elysée’,” said the Socialist Party.
Colombe Pringle, editor of Point de Vue, a celebrity magazine that is publishing a cover story along with Paris Match, said that Mr Sarkozy and Ms Bruni had made themselves available to photographers. “They wanted people to know,” she said. “Otherwise, why would they have gone to Disney to look at the Mickey Mouse parade?”
Mr Sarkozy had been expected to move quickly after he announced the end of his bumpy marriage on October 18. When she left him temporarily in 2005, Mr Sarkozy was enjoying a public liaison with a journalist within weeks. Andrée Sarkozy, his mother, predicted ten days ago that he would soon have a new companion but warned him not to marry again. “I have had enough of brides,” she said.
Rumours had linked Mr Sarkozy with several celebrities, but not with Ms Bruni, a leftish Left Bank type who supported Ségolène Royal, the Socialist, in the spring presidential elections. This time it is unlikely that the former Mrs Sarkozy, 50, née Ciganer, will return as she did last year. She is spending much of her time in London, where one of her adult daughters lives, and has signed up Louis, her 11-year-old son with the President, at the French Lycée in South Kensington.
France was struck by the resemblance between Ms Bruni and the former première dame.Like Ms Ciganer, Ms Bruni is from a wealthy artistic family, but Ms Bruni has had a stellar career of her own. She was brought up in France after her father, a Turin industrialist, left Italy to escape the danger from Red Brigade terrorists in the 1970s. This year when she released her English-language album, No Promises, she spoke of her wild youth as a supermodel in the late 1980s and her reputation as the girlfriend of Sir Mick when he was married to Jerry Hall.
“I’d be proud to be known as that. It’s not like I had an affair with General Pinochet or Mussolini,” she said.
Last autumn she said that she did not change for men. “I never felt power or fame was important when you’re in love. When you have a relationship with someone, they become only a man. If they are talented, of course it’s better but, still, a man is only a man.”
Three months ago she was still talking of her life with Raphael Enthoven, a relationship that began with scandal in 2000. She was intimately close to his father, Jean-Paul, when she fell for the son, who was married to Justine Lévy, daughter of the Left Bank thinker Bernard-Henri Lévy.
Mr Sarkozy’s very public romance prompted anger from traditionalists who see it as a further slide into Americanised politics. However, the love story was the perfect counter to a stream of bad news, culminating in a disastrous visit to Paris last week by Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader.

The mother of President Sarkozy told the press publically some three weeks ago that she hoped her son "Would enjoy himself, but not marry again". His sexual life is his own, nothing to do with the public. Why keep his relations secret, opposite sex relationships are healthy and normal. I am sure that it will only make him more effective as a leader as his body and mind needs sexual satisfaction. Well done Mr President of France! However I would add. Sexual disease is rampant in the world. Many relationships raise the risk factor considerably, particularily herpes viruses numbers 16 abd 18.

Fully agree with Jon Jon from Tokyo. The best comment. Well done!

I wonder if sales of her CD has risen in France.....
Daisy, Toronto,
If I was french I would be wondering if the man charged with running the country had his mind on the job. How he finds the time to keep this lady, who obviously has a short attention span, interested is beyond me.
Alex, London,
If that's a man-eater, how do I sign up as an entree?
Mitch, Boston, USA
As I can see from the article, Zarky is a chap who doesn't thinks seriously on 'self-improvement'.
This woman is not only 1 inch shorter the previous one. . .
She also has eleven years less of 'maturity' !!
oh. .zarky, zarky..
U'd think setting Urself higher goals !!
luis, BsAs, Arg
Perhaps there is something other than mere attraction that roused her interest...ehmm, maybe....power and fame ? Or is it far-fetched. Who knows....Carla, Carla, what were you doing still single and so beautiful at your age ? You found your man, at last, Sarkò... Sarkò who ? The French president ? Aaahhh, all right, got it.
Bob, Rome, Italy
Imagine Bill Clinton in that position.... Or Carla in the position of meeting Bill Clinton 10 years ago...

Oh what fun
He is a bloke, she is a good looking woman.A bit of "nookie" is allowed .He is human after all.And in power which makes men attractive to females.
Is it really newsworthy.bet he is laughing at analBbrits falling fo this great bit of PR stunt.

makes him a darn sight more interesting than Blair and from a different planet to Brown. best of luck Sarky, wish I was in your pygamas.
Jim Hatch, Acapulco, Mexico
You poor, embittered lot! Come on, give the guy a break. If not the French President, Sarkozy would have zero chance with a woman like her, but seeing as he's reached those lofty heights it makes women look at him in a different way. He's no longer a big nosed, rather dull looking fella, but instead he's the President of France! Power, money, influence - An intoxicating combination. I am sure that they both know the pitfalls of these relationships and maybe they are in it for the right reasons instead. Either way, they're having fun and (apparently) not hurting anyone so let them be. In the end, I'd rather have a President like him than that shabby old sack of a PM we've got lumbered with. Apparently his position in government somehow hasn't translated into him managing to lure some sultry 40 year old into a relationship with him, and he's ended up with the runner up Miss Frump 2007 instead.
Matthew, Epping,
I can't believe that journalists are fool enough to get trapped in this stupid PR trick. Just as the 5 day long Gaddafi visit had become a major embarrassment for the french president caught at his own game (the Lybian colonel is much better at dazzling naive journalists with female bodyguards, bedouin tent, etc.), Sarkozy pulls out the most obvious PR trick ever: appear in Disneyland (of all places, this is a political statement indeed) with a celebrity at his side. The fact that all the journalists employed by Sarkozy's best buddies who own the French press felt obliged to use front and back pages to this non news is no surprise, but why, oh why does the Time need to lower itself and report this PR stunt with such ridiculous gullibility?
Jon Jon, Tokyo,
Using French Presidency to pick up chicks - thatâs a first timer. Something tells me it will not be the only one with this character.

..."There's a name for people like her!" (Tony,Chicago,USA).
Yes, and its 'Attractive'...unlike some of the horrors you must have to put up with in the 'fattest' city in the USA.
mike, Rennes, France
Fair play to them, I'm sure they're both getting something from the relationship and she's nearly Naughty Forty, mmmm.

"These rich and powerful men who fall for women young enough to be their daughters are such fools that they cannot even see they are being used."
Sarkozy is not old enough to be Carla Bruni's father unless he became a father in his early teens!
Gemma, Paris, Paris
Just as long as Sarkozy stops her from singing, that's fine.
Louis, Paris, France
She's beautiful and can do what she likes because of this. Grace Kelly was never criticised (and lord knows she had a past!) so why should Carla? Good luck to her.
Ambrosia Sakkadas, Nicosia, Cyprus
some men find smart intelligent women fun to be with by the way she is nearly 40 and sexy
charles, melbourne, australia
These rich and powerful men who fall for women young enough to be their daughters are such fools that they cannot even see they are being used. Do they really believe these young women are attracted to them? Carla Bruni's record speaks for itself. She'll hook up with a man (usually older because they have more power and money), and when she's done with him and got out of him what she wants, moves onto the next sucker. These men may think they are the envy of other men because they are able to parade around displaying their latest "arm candy", but in fact they make themselves look pathetic. As for the women - is the the modern form of "high class" prostitution? Ironic they were first seen together at a Mickey Mouse parade!!!!!!
