Police investigating a fire in which a baby was tossed from a third floor window to save its life say that they are investigating reports of arson.
Two small girls who survived the blaze have claimed that they saw a German-speaking man set fire to paper and place it in a pram on the ground floor of the apartment block in Ludwigshafen, Germany, at about 4.30pm on Sunday.
The claims were reported in German newspapers this morning.
“We are investigating this but so far any claims about the cause are just speculation,” a police spokesman said.
All the occupants of the building were reported to be Turkish immigrants, raising fears that an arson attack could have had a racist motive. The Turkish foreign ministry has called for a full investigation.
This morning firefighters were waiting for the heat to subside enough for them to enter the smoking ruins, in which at least three adults and five children are so far reported to have died, after the flames destroyed the wooden staircase.
A ninth victim is said to have died after she tried to jump from a window. One of the victims was pregnant.
A press photographer captured dramatic images of a baby being hurled from the window by its father and tumbling to the ground, where it was safely caught by a policeman.
The child survived, but it is not known what happened to its parents. Prospects of escaping from the third floor appeared slim.
Sabah, a Turkish news agency, reported that the apartment block belonged to Zeki Karakaplan and that 52 people were living in the building.
"Fifty-year-old Medine Kaplan, her daughters-in-law Hülya Kaplan and Döne Kaplan, and their children Kenan, Kamil, Karanfil, İlyas and Dilara Kaplan died," reported Sabah's English language site.
"Belma Özkaplı died when she panicked and jumped out of the window. It has been stated that the inhabitants of the ground floor survived the fire."

The world is too busy watching a contest between four megalomaniacs that come wearing Red or Blue but have near-indistinguishable political differences.
The above poster is correct, this should be receiving much larger press coverage. The media is a mess but the real sadness is that it only reflects what the public want to know.

Celim - I absolutely agree with your sentiments, but I have been following this story since the beginning and right now it is only a possibility that this was racially motivated.
The girls are saying it was arson, but no-one can be sure at the moment that the arson was racially motivated. If it turns out to be true, then hopefully the German government will take appropriate action.
However, we have become so focused on racial and religious issues that we lose sight of the fact that these people died, adults, children, family and friends. Before we start to point the fingers and raise issues - lets take a moment to mourn for these people.
Making it top news isn't going to bring them back and unfortunately until there is more information, it would be irresponsible for the press to indicate otherwise.
Autumn, London,
This is war! Where is the outrage and condemnation from White Christian Europeans over this senseless loss of life. The silence is deafening, therefore, I presume Europeans agree with what happended.
Sam, Glasgow,
There doesn't seem to be any clear evidence of racism - these notions really shouldn't be promoted unless there is serious evidence.

May God condemn that evil hearted person who had the heart to do it.When I saw the 4 month old baby hurling down the window of the 3rd floor-my heart stopped beating.I pray to God that He heals the hearts of all evil hearted persons all over the world-wherever they are.German authorities definetely must judge right once and forever and find out who conducted this beasty crime.May God ease the pain of the families who lost their dear ones.
Anita, Mitrovica, Kosova
I condemn the attack on innocent people by the evil minded people.Turkish authorities should definetly intervene with the investigation. As this is not the first time i dont think it will be the last.It seems german authorities doesnt want to ditch the bottom of this.

I agree with Jason, saying that they saw a "German speaking man" in Germany is not helpful, I'm not saying it is ok, but we should just wait and let the German Police do their work, believe me they know what they are doing and will pursue the problem until the last consequences.
To Celim: I don't see your residence on Germany so if you only speak about what ou know of the country by the news, you don't have any clear sense of information, as in every place there are problems but it's like I say that all american kids have mental problems because they go into killing-mode at schools. You can't judge if you don't live in the country, and don't know the culture or society, arson is not a local problem is more global and it changes depending on where you are standing

Not a word of sympathy for the victims since they were not white, just defensive speculation! Of course there has never been any racism in Europe, it is all pure invention.

The individual under suspicion was described as a German speaker in Germany....do these immigrant Turks not speak German then and if not, why?
Says it all really, the whole crime is just assumed to be racist, nothing to do with mental illness or even a Turk who speaks German. Perhaps he was white you might say, but why assume racism as it would not be assumed the other way round? It just seems as long as one Turk or any minority in Europe perceives racism it exists such is political correctness, even when there is no evidence for it, which brings me to Celim: how despicable to accuse without proof. You only seem want to whip up hatred for Germans who are an easy target due to their history.
Jason, Leeds, UK
Up to this moment nobody knows the cause of the fire. The German police is absolutely trustworthy. They will detect all details. We don't need the help of Turkish officers.
Rolf-Peter Lacher, Gammertingen, Germany
This is horrific. If it is arson, then I really hope the perpatrator is found and given the harshest sentance possible.
I also hope Mr Zeki Karakaplan is also given the harshest possible sentance for having 52 people living in his building with only a wooden staircase and no fire escapes,
Oz, Rome,
Such terrible news and this is going to be one of those most heart wrenching photos of the year that people will remember for many years to come. Seeing that poor family throw their baby to safety, and poor baby - just hope the parents have survived otherwise what life will this baby have if in fact he has to face such racist opposition and actions from anti Turkish groups!
Jay Pullan, Cornwall, UK
Today in Germany a Turkish family was burned to death. News networks around the world do not even talk about it. I am appalled. After Jews are Muslims next? How come no one talks about it? Why is it that it is always top news when "some more important" lives are lost. This is bigotry and the news media should pursue this event until the cause is clear. The girls are saying there was an arson. How come is it that there were more arson events around Germany against immigrants the next day? What are you guys waiting for to report this event as your top news? More arsons?
