Moscow Vladimir Putin's chosen heir set out a very different vision yesterday for the future of Russia under his presidency.
Dmitri Medvedev said that he regarded freedom as the most important principle of good government. He pledged reforms to protect private property, strengthen the independence of the judiciary and roll back state interference in Russia's economy.
Despite serving under his mentor since 1999, Mr Medvedev described his plans in strikingly liberal terms that were in stark contrast to Mr Putin's authoritarian approach.
“Our policy should be based on what I consider to be the most important principle for any modern state that seeks high standards in life, obvious though this principle is: freedom is better than lack of freedom,” Mr Medvedev, who is the Deputy Prime Minister, told a business forum in Krasnoyarsk.
Mr Medvedev, 42, is certain to win the presidential election on March 2, but he lacks an independent power base and is reliant on Mr Putin for support.

Let's give this guy a chance and quit the Putin disinformation that's been going on. Lord knows, I wish we had had a President that would have eliminated our Trillions of dollars debt and resurrected our ailing industries.
Medvedev, if he does what he says he wants to do, will further advance the cause of democracy in Russia. Putin was right, Russia needed control (from Mafia, Oligarchs, etc) and a foundation to begin its journey to free market and Russian style democracy. The West should understand that Russia will never enjoy the style of democracy that western nations have because of it ethnic diversity.
Imagine the U.S. if all Native American tribes were still in tact and in large numbers. Already, the Lakotah Nation has declared all treaties null and void and will seek separation from the U.S.A. Haven't heard about that one? It's happening thanks to the U.S. stance on KOSOVO. What a mistake that is going to be.
