KOSOVO was braced for a showdown with its former Serbian masters in Belgrade this weekend after Hashim Thaci, prime minister of the breakaway province, announced yesterday that it would declare independence “in the coming hours”.
Sources within the Serbian government gave warning that they would begin implementing an “action plan” against Kosovo as soon as it seceded.
Serbia is expected to impose an economic blockade on Kosovo, whose population is overwhelmingly ethnic Albanian, and to take diplomatic action against countries, including Britain, that recognise the new state of 2m people. There were fears in Pristina, the Kosovan capital, that Serbia might even pull the plug on electricity and water supplies.
Last week President Vladi-mir Putin of Russia, a close ally of Serbia, condemned the breakaway as “illegal, ill-conceived and immoral”.
Thaci, 39, warned against a hostile response from Belgrade. “Anything they do will come back to them like a boomerang,” he said.
In the cafes of Pristina, however, the talk was of independence parties rather than sanctions. A huge firework display was planned and the city’s main street was lined with posters thanking Britain and America for their support.
Thousands of people were expected to gather in Pristina for an open-air concert and a local bakery was providing a 1½ton Kosovo-shaped cake, complete with peace doves that would fly out when it was cut.
For many the celebrations will be tinged with sadness as they remember relatives killed or missing since a Serbian crackdown on ethnic Albanian rebels triggered an all-out war in 1998. In Racak, south of Pristina, the deaths of 45 civilians at the hands of Serbian paramilitaries in 1999 convinced the West to intervene.
Afet Billali, 34, a former commander in the Kosovo Liberation Army, said: “I will think of my brother and friends who died. But I’ll turn this sadness into pride at their sacrifice for the sake of Kosovo’s freedom.”
In Mitrovica, celebrations will be confined to the south of the river. To the north are Koso-var Serbs who have said they will set up a parallel parliament. For them Kosovo will always be part of Serbia.
The independence declaration will begin the transfer of responsibility for law and order from the United Nations mission to a new European Union mission. Up to 600 members of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards are on standby to fly to Kosovo as part of the Nato Response Force if violence flares.

Who's Hugo Slavia?!
Rich, London,
Why are some people comparing the situation to Catalonia, Luton, the Basque Country, Luton etc to denounce Kosova's independence? They conveniently don't mention that government-backed paramilitaries have not been ravaging those regions and raping the women, executing the men, burning towns and villages. When that sort of atrocity starts happening in those area, on a scale comparable to what happened in Kosovo, then maybe we can liken the situation. Otherwise it's a red herring

The world is a jungle...If you believe in demcracy, accept the jungle rule first...
That is why Iran and North Korea desparately want nuclear weapons. Had Sadam had Mass Destruction Weapons, he would not be dead now.

I am look forward to other mayor minorities like greeks on albania, kurds, hungarians, bosnian serbs, albanians of Fyrom and others..
Although the movement is just another more destabilizing movement in Balkans which now favours the dreams of a greater Albania and their nationalism against their neighbors.
The fact is that dark clouds are now upon balkans once more.
Christos Germ, Athens, Greece
While taking into account the just aspirations of Kosovo,
I believe this is a badly managed,risk-heralding operation which might destabilize Balkans (and other Countries)Moreover this is another missed opportunity for Europe to speak with one voice.
Luigi, San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy
Michael Rogers, you should read a bit more about history, Kosova was never a Serbian land. This is the time when West done the right thing. Thanks US, UK and Europe. God Bless Kosova -- Happy Independece Day ---. All Albanians around the world, thanks for your support. Well deserved Kosova..
Burim, Gjakova, Kosova
well done kosovo... serbia doesn't deserve you.
ktom, hamburg,
It is betrayal made to Serbia from USA, France and UK. The similar betrayal as made on Czechoslovakia in 1938 from UK and France.
Tomas Kraun, London, England
Serbia does something wrong with the Kosovo-people, that causes, that they cannot live happy inside the Serbian State. Welshmen can live happy within the U.K.. So it can also be possible for Kosovo-people to live happy in Serbia. When the Serbians go on with their wrongdoing against the Kosovo-people, the Kosovo-people will take their right in their own hands.
Arnold Kramer, Ulestraten, Holland
Congratulation Albanians! You finaly got your country and freedom, you will pay it later during generation ahead. I gues there is no more needs for increasing of your population and ratio, now you are 90% and you have a chance to show to world how you will trerat these 10%. I hope it will better then you experienced.
Now you have a new project. You will go to take half Macedonia then your soul - Albania. Yest you will take all these because you have now big brathers behind. As I said, your generation will pay for that more then you paid in former Yugoslavia, then in Serbia. Belive me you will missed your former enemies
zlatko, Toronto, Canada
I'm congratulating to all Kosovons.Independence is the best principle for a country. But in Turkey, regime is changin unfortunately, religious regime is coming.I'm a Turkish and I'm againts to religious regime. We want to make continue to Ataturk's revolutions.Secularism again secularism!
duygu, Istanbul, Turkey
Fantastic News! If most UN and EU states support an independent Kosovo, then surely they will support the people of Tamil Eelam as well.
In fact now is the perfect time for everyone seeking an independent state to secure their own homeland. Go for it! Thanks for leading the way, Kosovo.
No More Double Standards UN & EU! No More.............
Cortina, Shrewsbury, UK
Bravo,Bravo, Bravo for the West!
Well done, now I suppose your countries will follow this great example of giving their territory, Catalonia, Basque land, N. Ireland, Corsica, Greenland, than on the east Kurdistan, Akhzasia, Transdniestria, Gaugazia..................???
Shameful day where Serbia is treated as a colonial possession in Africa and its has to knee down and beg the West not to take any other part of its country. God I feel sick from your justice.
Walter, Pristina, Kosovo, Serbia
Today is a day when Yugoslavia finale is going to dye! Thank you God! Kosovo, the whole world is with you!
Slaven, Zagreb, Croatia
I look forward to the Scots, Basques, Corsicans, Kurds, Hungarians in Slovakia, Bosnian Serbs and all the rest declaring their independence from the states in which they currently find themselves. All of this sets a very dangerous precedent in international law. Europe in particular will look back on today with considerable regret. And Serbia is entitled to take retaliatory action. A cessation of electricity, water and telecommunications would seem to be a logical first step.....
Vladimir, London, England
It is betrayal on Serbia provided by UK, France and USA. The similar one to betrayal on Czechoslovakia provided by UK and France in 1938.
Tomas Kraun, London, England
Perhaps we should follow by example and offer independance to Northern Ireland, and why not bradford whilst we're at it!
Richard Carlton-Walker, London,
Shameful day where long waited Albanian separatism is awarded from the hand of those who claim to be " the biggest democracies" and "protectors of international law and human rights". The new world imperialist are imposing their will to whom ever and where ever they want. Its seems that the smartest thing Albanians done in their history was to cross over mountains and to run away in 50's from their dear communist regime and leader Enver Hodxa. and abnormal natality, the highest in the whole world, so they can spread in Kosovo and when they reach present day number; they can say: "Right, you see we are majority in this Serbian province, and now we want to separate it". if thsoe so called "Great powers" or new more cool name an International community are so concerned about human rights, what"s than with Kurds in Turkey and sou rounding states????? There are 20 million of Kurds, there are subject of torture, of braking their basic human rights, and etc etc.
Just one observer, Pristina, Serbia
This independence sets a dangerous precident. If we allow migration to change a countries boundaries we will be opening a pandoras box. Kosovo was always part of Serbia. How can anybody now refuse the idea of an independant state of Luton?!, just because migration has changed its ethnic population?
Adrian, aldershot, England
Considering the misery that the Serbs have caused in the whole region they should not be surprised by this - they are getting no more than they deserve.
Chris, Ashford, Middlesex, UK
well done kosovo. looking forward for similar declarations from New Mexico, Arizona and Texas and President Bush's backing of same.
Brent, sydney, oz
How can yet another statelet in the Balkans be viable? I just hope that this one can live without indefinite western aid or the proceeds of arms, drugs and people trafficking. But I'm not hopeful: what has Kosova actually got? The sad thing is that Yugoslavia when it existed had real influence and was the embodiment of a multi-national ideal. If Milosevic and his cronies hadn't ruined it, it would now be in the EU and the wealthiest state in eastern Europe by a mile
Richard, Bexhill, UK
Let's not forget the terror brought on to the Albanian civilians in Kosovo by the Serbs. The West had every reason to intervene, quite rightly so, and the Serbs have no right to preach on "legal" and "moral" principles.
In any case, I wonder how many of the Serbs who claim Kosova to be the "cradle" of Serbia have actually even bothered to visit the region?
Masa, London, UK
Kosovans are finally celebrating the mos important event in their history. Their historic dream will become true today. Forover!
Happy Independence Day!
Majlinda, Pristina, Kosovo
Serbs can came in Kosovo that is not a problem but will they live to tell about that - serbia lost all wars and now they lost Kosovo god they are losers
Florim, skopje, macedonia
Kosovo is heart of Serbia and it will always be.
jelena, banja luka,
Good bless Kosova and its citizens. They were killed, raped, prosecuted and god knows what else from Serbian forces, and I truly think that they deserve this Independence and I wish them all the best.
Steve, London,
I sincerely hope that this historic moment will lead the nation to a well deserved, prosperous future.
Masa, London, UK
("I hope that the government of the Kosovo calls home from Western Europe all the drug dealers, violators, muderers and godfathers of organized crime. They will need the help of these people to establish the new state." ) Ha , ha ! In your dreams! You'll see what Kosovo is ,more of them will come to you...
petruci, Pejes, Visantia
The International community is going to regret this move by Kosovo. This is the spiritual heartland of the Christian Serbs which has been systematically taken over by Muslim Albanians.
It should be a province of Serbia and not an independent country. It would end up another basket case with UN troops keeping the peace for ever.
The west will realize its folly very soon for supporting an illegal breakaway of a sovereign country.
Faqi, London, UK
It is not about "Kossovars" and their presumed future. Search in the Internet for Camp Bondsteel and you'll understand what's the fuss about.
R Theodore, Kuwait,
Never, I repaet never, will Serbs forget Kosovo. We will be back, sooner or later...
Filip, New York, USA
I think it is a digrace Kosova declaration of independents what next, why dont they go and live in Albania their natrual hinderland.I think Serbia are being bullied by the west. If we go along them lines the N of England will be looking to be part of asia parts of London will want to become Polish. The dogs in the street know that Kosova is Serbian. I hope one day it will return to its rightfull owner.
Michael Campbell , londonderry, n ireland
Does this mean that all the people from Kosova will go home now by this I mean the Albanian ones if so I suppose some good will come from this.
Michael Campbell , londonderry, n ireland
I hope that the government of the Kosovo calls home from Western Europe all the drug dealers, violators, muderers and godfathers of organized crime. They will need the help of these people to establish the new state.
Rolf-Peter, Gammertingen, Germany
It is only right that Kosovo should be independent after
what occurred. Serbia should not cause any more suffering by
cutting off supplies. Hashim Thaci, the new Prime Minister
of Kosovo seems impressive and has pledged equal rights
for all ethnic divisions in Kosovo.
God bless Kosovo and may the nation become an example
of democracy at its best, to which the rest of the European Union might aspire, especially with regard to the prevention of the trafficking of women and children and giving priority to the
worst off in society.
Joan Moira Peters, Whangarei (UK citizen , temporarily abroad)
Bosnia is next, followed by Chechnya, the Basque .
Have a great future being isolated by your most powerful neighbhour!!!

Happy Independence Day, whereever you Albanaians are!!!
Thank you USA, Thank you UK, Thank you Europe...
Fatmire, Prishtina, Kosova
Happy Independence Day KOSOVO!!!!!!
Yes it's true Pete that Toronto might have larger population than KOSOVO, but Toronto hasn't experienced or better suffer any racist persecution and massive killings like the albanians in Kosovo have.
Again Best wishes to Kosova and Happy Independence day!!!!!
Eda, Toronto, Canada
Happy Independence Day KOSOVO!!!!!
Eda, Toronto, Canada
The right move, for lasting peace and prosperity in Balkans.
Gazmend Ceno, New York, USA
Good Luck Kosovo, I hope it is a peaceful revolution and no blood shed occurs. But stay strong and do not back down if you believe in independence for yourself. God/Allah Bless You.
Adam, El Paso, Texas
God bless israel usa france and england for their help
lulzim hoxha, new jersey, usa
I know this is a terribly naive thing to say, but I live in a city with a population larger than Kosovo. It wouldn't give me any great joy for Toronto, or the GTA, the Greater Toronto Area, to separate from the rest of Ontario, or Canada, for that matter. Sometime simply on an economic basis working as part of larger group just makes sense.
Hope you guys know what you're doing.
Pete Dixon, Toronto, ON, Canada
Justice is being done, thanks to the men who gave their lives for this day, and thanks to all allies like USA, UK, France etc.
So people of Kosovo, Albania and all freedom lovers celebrate this great day, which marks the beginning of a brand new era.
May God bless Kosovo and all nations who fight in the right.
(GEZUAR PAVARESINE KOSOVE) means>>> Happy indipendence day Kosovo
shkelqim osmani, Shkoder, albania
I am so happy to be alive today and celebtrate the biggest event of my generation. Our hearts go out to those families who lost everything pursuing this dream. But, we are also grateful to so many international individuals who helped us through the worst of times. Among the strongest supporters of this cause were Britan, US, France Germany, which helped create this extraordinary historical moment. We will never forget that. We also have sympathy for those non-Albanians in Kosovo who, for no fault of their own, may feel estranged to this process. We assure them that kosovo is their home and they will always get the respect they deserve.
Thank you everybody.
Viktor Krasniqi, Prishtine, Kosovo
And the United Nations now follows the path of the League of Nations as an irrelevant body. I fear for the world...
rick, toronto, canada
Good luck to Kosovo in their independant future. Here's hoping England follows their example.
Adam, Lincs, England
This cannot be right and it sets a dangerous precedent for other regions and countries. We might not like Serbia, but we should only operate within the law.
Michael Rogers, Manchester, UK
Oh no...Here we go again :(
SimonF, Newcastle,
Great day for well deserved Independence. Bless them all tomorro and the best of luck and happiness and prosperous future 2 all in Kosova.
